The country is an important market for the South Korean automobile giant, given that it is the 2nd largest OEM (original equipment manufacturer) in the passenger vehicle space in India. However, the market is already preparing for muted listing day gains, with the company's GMP dropping to Rs 59 today. The retail AUM, which comprises of equity, hybrid and solution oriented schemes, also touched an all-time high of Rs 40,44,098 crore, up from Rs 39,27,594 crore in August 2024. Inflows in SIP (Systematic Investment Plans) remained resilient, and witnessed an all-time high, with the number of new SIPs registered in September registered at 66,38,857. The <keyword id="20876064" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="SIP-AUM" source="keywords">SIP AUM</keyword> was also at its highest ever, at Rs 13,81,703.94 crores for September. This stood at Rs 13,38,944.73 crores for August 2024 The number of SIP accounts were also at their highest ever at 9,87,44,171, along with SIP contribution, which recorded an all-time high of Rs 24,508.73 crores last month. The MF industry also reached the milestone of having 5,01,22,609 unique investors in September.

The term broadly refers to loans made to companies and consumers by nonbank lenders. Historically, fund managers have sold "alternative assets" like private debt to institutional investors at a high cost, generating returns of around 10% in recent years — more than they would have seen from investing in the stock or bond markets.Now, as those institutions slow allocations to private credit, the biggest players in the space want to target a new class of investors. According to the Journal, firms like State Street, Apollo Global Management, and BlackRock are working to roll out private credit ETFs to regular investors. The challenge, though, is building a highly liquid ETF out of illiquid private loans. That hurdle is also what will likely draw the eye of regulators as they ensure the ETFs are appropriate for retail investors. But if these ETFs get approved, they will enable regular investors to tap into a booming market, one that BlackRock expects will more than double to $3.5 trillion by 2028. The race to launch private credit ETFs has heated up in recent months.In May, Capital Group and KKR teamed up to start offering funds investing in both public and private assets—including in private credit—starting next year.Last month, State Street proposed a private debt ETF to the Securities and Exchange Commission. The ETF would blend public debt with private debt on mortgage, corporate, and consumer loans purchased from Apollo Global Management. Shares jumped almost 7.5% in premarket trading, in addition to a near-30% increase since the start of the year. Walmart posted a 4.7% increase in net sales in the quarter to $167.8 billion and a similar jump in total revenues to $169.3 billion on <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://corporate.walmart.com/news/2024/08/15/walmart-releases-q2-fy25-earnings">Thursday</a>. Those totals include revenues from both Walmart US and its international operations as well as Sam's Club, its warehouse chain.However, comparable sales have been growing at a slower pace. They rose by 4.2% excluding fuel year-on-year for Walmart US in the quarter to July 31. In the same period last year, comparable sales were up 6.4%.The decline was due to a slowdown in the growth of the average ticket, which grew just 0.6% in the quarter year-on-year.Operating income jumped $500 million to $6.6 billion year-on-year.But Walmart US still posted a jump in comparable sales versus the two previous quarters — to the end of April and the end of January — when year-over-year comparable sales were 3.8% and 4.0% respectively.At Walmart US, there had been a growth in the number of upper-income customers as well as a 17% increase in e-commerce sales, it said."Although Walmart's overall growth has slowed a little since last quarter, today's numbers show it still has enough fuel in the tank to give the business a very nice lift," Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData, wrote in a note.Jefferies analysts said in a note that Walmart's results were "strong." It beat analysts' consensus for comparable sales at Walmart US and Sam's Club, as well as for gross margin and operating income."In the context of a food sector in which inflation is moderating and where the gains from shopper switching are weakening, this is a solid performance which is testament to Walmart's superior execution," Saunders wrote. "More broadly, the good results will come as a relief to the wider retail sector as poor trading at Walmart would be a bad omen for the rest of the industry."

A recent analysis by CRISIL Ratings, which examined 58 gold jewellery retailers representing a third of the <keyword id="21165181" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="organised-sector" source="keywords">organised sector</keyword>'s revenues, indicates that the sector will benefit from improved <keyword id="19900859" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="working-capital" source="keywords">working capital</keyword> management. Although many retailers plan significant store expansions--estimated at 12-14% of existing stores--lower gold prices will reduce inventory costs, providing working capital relief. The organised jewellery sector, which accounts for just over a third of the overall market, is poised for a stronger financial performance compared to its unorganised counterpart. The steep reduction in <keyword id="20069572" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="import-duty" source="keywords">import duty</keyword> has come at a crucial time for the industry, as retailers prepare for the festive and marriage seasons. He added, "However, the inventory losses on the existing stock due to the price cuts will be partially mitigated by the reduced spends on marketing and discounts, as demand revives. All said <keyword id="19957745" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="profitability" source="keywords">profitability</keyword> will see a marginal dip on-year to 7.1-7.2%." Despite the pressure on profitability, retailers' cash flows will improve due to higher revenues, enabling them to pursue expansion plans. Store expansions, expected to increase by 12-14%, will require higher inventory levels. However, the lower input costs resulting from reduced gold prices will balance out the additional working capital requirements. Gaurav Arora, Associate Director at CRISIL Ratings, added, "Gold jewellery retailers will maintain comfortable financial metrics this fiscal, with total outside liabilities to tangible net worth (TOL/TNW) and interest coverage ratios remaining around 1.0 and 9 times, respectively. These will be moderately better than our earlier expectations, keeping credit profiles stable." As the festive season approaches, gold prices remain around 17% higher than last year's average, which is expected to sustain demand and further drive revenues in the second half of the fiscal year. However, potential volatility in gold prices, changes in government regulations, and shifts in consumer sentiment will need to be closely monitored. The combination of reduced prices, increased demand, and improved working capital management is expected to keep the financial outlook for gold jewellery retailers positive, despite the slight dip in profitability. The reduced duty has caused retail gold prices to fall by Rs 4,500-5,000 per 10 grams, leading to increased demand for gold jewellery. The growth projection, 500-600 basis points higher than earlier estimates of 17-19%, is fuelled by higher volumes as more consumers are enticed by the lower prices.

Indian companies across multiple sectors have reported disappointing results in the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, notes a new JM Financials report. Consequently, their poor performance has triggered stock price corrections for affected companies. The brunt of this weaker than expected earnings was largely borne by consumer centric sectors like FMCG (fast moving consumer goods), retail, and auto, which slacked largely due to dampened urban demand. For instance, India's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki, reported a 5% YoY decline in its total domestic passenger vehicle wholesales, largely on the back of pent-up inventory. Similarly, Honda reported a staggering 23% YoY dip in its total sales during October 2024. A recent report by Bernstein noted that around 48% of the companies listed on the NSE100 index missed their earnings estimate for Q2FY25, the highest since March 2020. Most companies have mentioned deteriorated domestic demand, urban slowing, macroeconomic risk, and margin pressures as the main reasons behind the dip. "The quarter's earnings have made investors nervous," noted the JM Financials report. The challenging environment stems from multiple factors: softening consumer demand, rising input costs, and companies' limited ability to increase prices. Moreover, this is not limited to just one quarter. Companies have been reporting weak, single-digit earnings growth for the last six consecutive quarters. Data from India Data Hub also suggests that corporate profits of listed companies plunged by as much as 3.4% during the quarter ended September 30, 2024. This is in stark contrast to the year-ago period, where they had shot up by over 40% The oil and gas sector had a difficult quarter, with refiners hit by weak margins and city gas distributors struggling with higher input costs. Financial institutions showed mixed results. While government-owned banks reported strong numbers, microfinance institutions and some private lenders faced massive difficulties with their unsecured loans. Most notable amongst this was the case of IndusInd Bank, which saw its net profits dip by 40% amidst burgeoning provisions, which climbed 87% to Rs 1,820 crore in Q2, as against Rs 974 crore reported in the year-ago period. <h2>Markets head southwards</h2>The selling trend by FPIs has dragged down the major Indian indices, the Nifty 50 and Sensex, both of which have dropped by around 8% since the beginning of this selling spree in October. According to National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) data, FPIs offloaded equities worth a significant Rs 19,994 crore in just the first five trading sessions of November last week. The impact is clearly visible on Indian stock markets. Data suggests that while every sector in October closed the month in red, auto, oil and gas, and consumer durables were the most badly hit, each declining by as much as 10% during the month. Another indicator underlining the inherent weakness of the market was that the month saw only 242 stocks hit their 52-week high, significantly below the usual monthly average of 310.

Following the <keyword id="19936553" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="budget" source="keywords">budget</keyword> announcement by finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman that the government has slashed basic customs duties on gold and silver from 15 per cent to 6 per cent, gold prices crashed by Rs 3,350 to Rs 72,300 per 10 grams in the national capital on Tuesday. The precious metal prices continued the downtrend and plunged by Rs 650 on Wednesday. The yellow metal rates saw another steep fall on Thursday, nosediving by Rs 1,000 to settle at Rs 70,650 per 10 grams, as per the All India Sarafa Association. After the duty cut, the yellow metal has declined Rs 5,000 per 10 grams or 7.1% in the past three sessions, since July 23 when it had fallen Rs 3,350 to end at Rs 72,300 per kg. Also, gold of 99.5% purity declined by Rs 1,000 to Rs 70,300 per 10 grams on Thursday. It had also lost ground by Rs 5,000 per 10 grams in the previous three sessions. On Thursday, silver rates also lost ground by Rs 3,500 per kg to Rs 84,000 per kg. In the past three sessions, the rates of the bright metal fell sharply by Rs 7,000 or 8.3% to Rs 84,000 per kg from Rs 91,000 per kg. Traders also said that a sharp correction in gold prices have revived the demand for jewellery among consumers as they flocked to jewellery outlets to take advantage of lower prices. "The reduction in basic custom duties have spurted the demand for jewellery in the domestic markets. Further, this will act as a sales booster for jewellers before the festive seasons, encouraging fresh buying by the consumers due to lower prices," PC Jeweller's Managing Director Balram Garg. Low gold prices will help domestic jewellers, particularly the organised ones, Garg said. According to MP Ahammed, Chairman, Malabar Group, the reduction has been a long-standing demand of traders in the gold sector, as it is expected to curb the rampant issue of gold smuggling, which poses a substantial threat to the Indian economy. "With the new rates, the duty on one kilogram of gold drops from Rs 9.82 lakh to Rs 3.93 lakh, making smuggling less attractive and more manageable. "This move will help dismantle the mafia chain involved in smuggling, leading to growth in the organised jewellery sector and increasing government revenue through GST and income tax," Ahammed said. Meanwhile, in futures trade on the <keyword id="20316358" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="multi-commodity-exchange" source="keywords">Multi Commodity Exchange</keyword> (MCX), gold futures have partially recovered on Friday, after three days of slump. The most traded August contract jumped Rs 288 to Rs 67,750 per 10 grams on the MCX. It had settled at Rs 67,462 per 10 grams in the previous session on Thursday. However, silver contracts for September delivery continued its downward trend by declining Rs 241 to Rs 81,090 per kg. It had closed at Rs 81,331 per kg in the previous session on Thursday. Experts anticipate stability in bullion prices once there is clarity on several economic and political factors such as interest rate cut by the <keyword id="19901377" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-federal-reserve" source="keywords">US Federal Reserve</keyword>. "Stability in gold prices is expected once there is clarity on several economic and political factors including, potential interest rate cuts in the US and India, and the outcome of the US Presidential elections will provide a clear direction for gold prices," Trivedi said.

Improved vehicle supply and strategic planning in the two-wheeler segment have led to rising customer bookings and better market sentiment. In the passenger vehicle segment, new model launches and favorable monsoon forecasts are expected to stimulate customer interest. Challenges remain, with election uncertainty affecting market sentiment and financial constraints posing growth hurdles. Extreme temperatures and overcapacity in the commercial vehicle segment could further slow growth. Indian auto retail sector records 27% YoY growth in April: FADA

Revenue was down 3% at the Louis Vuitton owner, and for the first time since the pandemic, sales in the company's fashion and leather goods sector, its largest, fell. Its other sectors — watches and jewelry, wine and spirits, and perfume and cosmetics — missed analysts' estimates, and the company's stock dropped.Salvatore Ferragamo, which also reported earnings this week, had an even steeper sales decline.Word on the Street is that things may <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/lvmh-stock-price-earnings-lucury-sales-china-economy-demand-stimulus-2024-10">get worse for the sector before they get better</a>."We see a challenging backdrop for luxury consumption and expect a difficult six months ahead," Goldman Sachs analysts wrote in a note following LVMH's earnings call.Over the next week, Kering, the owner of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gucci-sales-profit-reputation-falling-luxury-kering-michele-china-2024-5">Gucci</a> and Balenciaga, and Hermès will announce their earnings. Richemont, Moncler, and Burberry will follow.In some ways, the poor showing may have been inevitable."This is largely cyclical, and right now we're kind of in the trough or valley, so there is a fair amount of weathering that needs to take place on an industry-wide basis," Sky Canaves, a principal analyst at EMARKETER, a sister company of Business Insider, said.Luxury has had its ups and downs before and was riding a particularly — and perhaps artificially — high high fueled by a pandemic bump in spending. Consumers had savings and stimulus checks and nowhere to go, so they spent extra cash on bags, wallets, and the like.While economic uncertainty has affected countries worldwide in recent years, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-luxury-slump-stimulus-measures-lvmh-revenue-earnings-2024-10">a property crisis and high youth unemployment rates in China</a>, one of the world's biggest luxury markets, have hit the region particularly hard. LVMH sales in Asia, excluding Japan, fell 16% year-over-year for the quarter."Consumer confidence in mainland China today is back in line with the all-time low reached during COVID," LVMH's chief financial officer, Jean-Jacques Guiony, told analysts during its earnings call.He added that it's too early to tell if the country's stimulus package or the recent national holiday would boost sales.While personal luxury sales in China grew by more than 37% each year from 2019 through 2021, that annual growth is not expected to hit more than 4.2% through 2028, according to EMARKETER data.<h2 id="a8668278-865b-4731-8ca2-2e215ef67ebd">How brands can bounce back</h2>Still, the contraction in luxury spending may not have had to be as sharp as it was, regardless of the macroeconomic conditions. There are levers that brands can pull to hamper their losses — or add to them."The big question is whether it is only a weakness in consumer confidence that is responsible for the slowdown in spending or whether there are some more structural issues," Adam Cochrane, a retail and luxury equity analyst at Deutsche Bank, told BI over email.Pricing, for example, is well within companies' control, and some have been too liberal with increases. Houses like Louis Vuitton and Chanel have more than doubled the prices of their signature bags — the Never Full and Classic Flap, respectively — over the past decade, and the brands have accelerated price hikes since 2020, turning off customers, according to data from Sotheby's.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hermes-became-ultimate-status-symbol-2024-2">Hermès</a>, meanwhile, has raised prices more moderately.More conservative increases appeal to customers, who may be turned off from buying a product that they could have bought five years ago at a significantly lower price, Canaves said.LVMH, for its part, defended its price hikes. "Do you really think that if we had not increased prices the way we have done, we would be doing double-digit [growth] today? I really don't think so," Guiony said.Birkin-maker Hermès, which has consistently outperformed its luxury rivals this year, has also been smart about expanding product offerings slowly and intentionally. It has largely relied on an affluent consumer base rather than the aspirational customers that helped fuel growth at Louis Vuitton or Gucci. Those <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lvmh-says-the-aspirational-customer-is-suffering-2023-7">aspirational customers</a> are the first to go when the economy gets choppy.There are some other bright spots.Sales in LVMH's jewelry and watch business only fell 4%, and the "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/critics-roasted-lvmh-spending-big-tiffany-bet-is-paying-off-2024-7">Tiffany rebrand</a> is being well received," Deutsche Bank's Cochrane wrote in his note. That may mean that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/lvmh-stock-price-earnings-lucury-sales-china-economy-demand-stimulus-2024-10">Richemont, the owner of Cartier,</a> will have "less negative" results, he said.Brunello Cucinelli, the Italian house best known for its cashmere, reported increased revenue in the third quarter, including in China.Moving forward, brands that innovate more may fare better.EMARKETER's Canaves pointed to the collaborations and moves toward streetwear that helped some brands emerge from the last luxury slump. This time around, she said, labels may turn to experiences, like hospitality and services, to appeal to consumers.Louis Vuitton sells everything "from chocolates to bespoke jewelry," HSBC's Erwan Rambourg wrote in a note earlier this month. Earlier this year, LVMH made headlines when it purchased the Paris restaurant Chez L'Ami Louis.Of course, any expansion into new categories should not take attention from handbags and clothing, the revenue drivers of luxury brands."Time is ripe for brands to start taking those creative risks and laying the groundwork for when the consumer does come back and seek out the opportunities," Canaves said.
