The fast-food chain said there are "serious compliance risks" at 169 of its Indian restaurants that are operated by one of its franchise partners, Connaught Plaza Restaurants (CPRL), <a href="https://qz.com/1167198/mcdonalds-cant-vouch-for-the-quality-of-40-of-its-restaurants-in-india/">Quartz India reports.</a>McDonald's India has been locked in a bitter battle with CPRL for years. Four months ago, the company terminated its franchise agreement with CPRL."Since the termination of the franchise agreement, McDonald's India has not been able to verify if the unauthorized McDonald's restaurants operated by CPRL in north and east India are complying with applicable McDonald's standards, including those pertaining to supplies, operations and safety standards, and quality required for McDonald's products," a spokesman for McDonald's India told Quartz. The warning from McDonald's comes several days after dozens of CPRL's restaurants were shut down due to a disagreement with a supplier. Overall, this year’s awards recognizes 528 restaurants. Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews for restaurants around the world, gathered over a 12-month period.

From Domino’s to Hong’s Kitchen – India's Jubilant Foodworks enters the Chinese fast food segment with its own budget brand

(Photo Source: .stuartfreedman.com) <ul><li><keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>’s income tax department is reportedly going to examine the books of all the restaurants and hotels that do not disclose additional income through the service charge they bill to customers </li><li>Service charge imposed by eateries on consumers and not shared with staff will be liable for income tax. </li><li>Most of the restaurants do not even ask consumers whether they want to pay service charge or share the fact that it is optional. </li></ul>Many restaurants and hotels in India have been earning an additional income on behalf of their serving staff through the optional ‘service charge’ category billed to customers. Now, India’s income tax authorities want to make sure that establishments that don’t disclose that extra income are penalised. The Central Board of Direct Taxes has instructed its officers to investigate the books of all the restaurants that are collecting a service charge from customers. The restaurants will have to pay heavy taxes for under reporting or non reporting of service charge receipts <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/business/banking-and-finance/i-t-prepares-to-check-if-hotels-are-handing-over-service-charge-to-their-staff-5460269/">Indian Express </a>reported. In case the restaurant is imposing a service charge they will have to fully disclose the receipt in their books as a part of their turnover. The CBDT will levy a heavy income tax in case such entities fail to show the additional income. The decision came after India’s Ministry of Consumer Affairs found that some hotels and restaurants were misusing the service charge to fill their pockets. They were neither sharing the income meant as gratuity for their staff nor were they disclosing it in their books accurately. In fact, many restaurants have decided a rate to paid by customers without even taking their consent in advance, The Indian Express reported. Last year, service charge has been made optional for customers and restaurants are required to inform their patrons of the same.

McDonald's India is training 10,000 managers and frontline crew digitally for a strong comeback

New Delhi, Feb 3 () The Competition Commission has approved proposed combination between Yum Restaurants and Devyani International Limited, the Corporate Affairs Ministry said on Monday.
 The deal involves "acquisition of certain equity shareholding and sale of certain KFC restaurants", the ministry said in a release.
 Yum Restaurants is a part of the US-based Yum! Brands Inc. and runs restaurants under three brands -- KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell -- in India. Devyani International is one of the franchisees of Yum Restaurants and runs KFC and Pizza Hut and Pizza Hut Delivery restaurants in certain territories of India.
 According to a CCI notice, Yum Restaurants is transferring the business of "running, maintaining and operating 61 KFC restaurants located in the states of Karnataka, Telangana and Andha Pradesh (except Hyderabad)" to Devyani International.
 The book value of the assets of the business undertaking comprising of 61 KFC restaurants is less than Rs 350 crore, the notice said. SRS

The National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) launched the ‘logout’ movement last week claiming that the business practices of aggregators are unethical. A leading foodtech aggregator Zomato’s CEO Deepinder Goyal took to Twitter to address the issue, saying this is a “wake up call” for them to make things better with their restaurant partners, and asked them to stop the logout campaign.

 At the root of the problem lies the company’s hit offering – <keyword id="4299597" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato-Gold">Zomato Gold</keyword>, which offers consumers avail of 1+1 on food and 2+2 on drinks. Zomato also launched the infinity dining feature, where users for a fixed cost can order everything off the menu. However, Goyal himself admitted that “bargain hunters have also joined Zomato Gold and they are hurting some segments of the restaurant industry very badly.” He also promised to modify Zomato Gold which will result in a win-win situation. But he also asked restaurateurs to do their part. He wrote, “I would also want to urge the restaurant industry to proactively look at ways to reduce operating costs, so that eating out becomes more affordable for consumers - our only objective here is to drive the growth of the restaurant industry.” His statement led to multiple restaurant owners ridicule him for not understanding the costs involved in running a restaurant. Most restaurant owners pointed out that it’s the massive discounts offered by food aggregators that is hurting the consumers. Noted restaurateur Riyaaz Amlani mocked the entrepreneur and wrote, “Visionary idea as usual! Maybe we can fire restaurant workers? Or put a gun on our landlord heads to reduce rent? Or buy inferior ingredients so that we can reduce costs, and offer lower prices to accommodate your vision. Why didn’t I think of this before?”

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal responds to the ‘logout’ movement – restaurant owners mock him on Twitter

New Delhi, Jan 28 () Burger King India Ltd, quick service restaurant chain, has received markets regulator Sebi's go ahead to float its initial public offering (IPO).
 The company, which had filed its draft IPO papers with the markets watchdog in November, obtained its final observations on January 24 latest update with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) showed.
 The regulator's observations are necessary for any company to launch public issues such as initial public offer, follow-on public offer and rights issue.
 Going by the draft papers, Burger King's offer comprises fresh issue of equity shares aggregating up to Rs 400 crore and an offer for sale of up to 6 crore equity shares by QSR Asia, the promoter.
 Net proceeds from the fresh issue are proposed to be utilised for funding roll out of new company-owned Burger King Restaurants and general corporate purposes.
 The initial share-sale is being managed by Kotak Mahindra Capital Company, CLSA India Pvt Ltd, Edelweiss Financial Services and JM Financial. The company's shares are proposed to be listed on the BSE and the NSE.
 As of June 30, 2019, the company had 202 restaurants including seven sub-franchised Burger King Restaurants across 16 states and union territories and 47 cities across India, as per the DRHP.
 The company is one of the fastest growing international QSR chains in India during the first five years of operations based on number of restaurants. SP SHW
