This is, of course, huge news for the underserved market of the Denchbench. (I assume that's the name of the Judi Dench stan-dom) who haven't yet found the right reason to experiment with an AI voice chatbot.For the rest of us, the logic behind Meta's celebrity collaboration is a little more perplexing.Around this time last year, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-ai-chatbots-assistants-tom-brady-mr-beast-kendall-jenner-2023-9">Meta introduced a different round of celebrity AI assistants</a> as part of Messenger. These chatbots had the faces of celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Mr. Beast, Tom Brady, Snoop Dogg, and more. Strangely, these chatbots used the likenesses of the celebrities, but not their real names. For example, I chatted with "Billie," the character portrayed with an image of Kendall Jenner, whose chat persona was of a helpful sister-like friend.For the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-paying-celebrity-faces-of-ai-chatbots-as-much-as-5-million-2023-10">celebrity-faced AI assistants, Meta reportedly paid as much as $5 million</a> over two years — for six hours of work sitting in a studio. The deal didn't seem to work out too well for Meta. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-scraps-kendall-jenner-tom-brady-celebrity-ai-chatbots-2024-8">chatbots were discontinued</a> by August, less than a year after their launch.So why is Meta using the celebrity AI playbook again if it apparently crashed and burned last time?<h2 id="b5b28601-135c-4d5b-9c10-917b127344b6">Celebrities might help AI be less threatening</h2>Maybe last year's chatbots weren't a failure by some metrics. Sure, people didn't seem interested in sticking around talking to fake Tom Brady, but maybe the goal was to get enough people to try using an AI chatbot just one time — and the celebrity gimmick worked for that.Or maybe Meta just has a really strange relationship with the concept of celebrity: It's not a brand like Doritos that uses celebrities in Super Bowl ads or a fashion house where an actress is the face of a perfume. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/instagram">Instagram</a> has been so embedded in the concept of fame and celebrity for the last decade that it's impossible to imagine Meta and famous people existing without each other (whereas I can imagine Doritos getting along just fine).When Meta's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/threads-app">Threads</a> launched in the summer of 2023, a real tension appeared: Big, A-list celebrities — the kind who hadn't used Twitter in years — suddenly flocked to the new platform, bringing big follower counts with them. But most of those celebrities went silent after a day or two, perhaps realizing that a text-based medium wasn't really their jam. A few months later, Meta rolled out a program to give cash bonuses to reality stars in exchange for posting on Threads.When <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-tortured-poets-department-album-reviews-critics-reviews-2024-4">Taylor Swift released her latest album</a>, she did post to Threads, where Mark Zuckerberg enthusiastically posted to welcome her. There was even a custom sparkle effect made for users when they typed her album name. But after Meta rolled out the welcome mat for the star, she never posted again on Threads.And recently, when Swift made her announcement supporting Kamala Harris, she did it only on Instagram — not even a cross-post to the platform's text-native cousin (for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/taylor-swift-kamala-harris-instagram-twitter-elon-musk-2024-9">good reasons, as my colleague Peter Kafka explains</a>).There have been other flops in the celebrity-Meta-ad world. In 2019, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://mashable.com/article/facebook-portal-tv-ad-jennifer-lopez-kim-kardashian-west">Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez</a>, two celebrities whose endorsements usually aren't cheap, starred in three TV spots to promote the Facebook Portal. The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/katienotopoulos/facebook-portal-rip-amazon">Portal was discontinued</a> in late 2022.<h2 id="f684fc34-9ed2-45f0-89eb-636509c56634">How celebrities can help Meta</h2>So, Meta relying on celebrity voices for its AI products feels a little odd to me. Meta's products are usually really good at selling themselves because people love to use them. Celebrities even use them — without getting paid!But reuniting the cast of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/whatsapp-modern-family-tv-ad-us-growth-2024-7">"Modern Family" for a WhatsApp ad</a> suggests Meta might be using celebs to reach normies who might not typically be using AI or <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/what-is-whatsapp-guide">WhatsApp</a>. And with these latest AI assistant voices, Meta is not going with the hottest Gen Z influencers; it's using Judi Dench, after all.I mean, at least Meta didn't "accidentally" <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-scarlett-johansson-sam-altman-chatgpt-disaster-why-2024-5">hire a soundalike of a well-known celebrity to be the voice for an AI companion</a> like, uh, some other AI competitors. Could be worse!Perhaps it's just that AI is still a little scary and impersonal, and Meta execs think putting a celebrity face — or voice — to it will help make it feel more accessible. Oddly, the ability of AI to impersonate celebrities is one of the things I think many people fear about the technology. But, ah well.My final guess as to Meta's play here is that these decisions come from somewhere deep inside the company, perhaps a decision based on an executive's instinct about what will pop, mixed with some data from the marketing team. I'm sure many meetings were held!I still hold on to my personal pet theory: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://ai.meta.com/people/396469589677838/yann-lecun/">Yann LeCun</a> is a frothing fan of "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" franchise and demanded the Dame.

for</a>.The two countries have also long participated in joint military exercises and <a target="_blank" class="" <ul class="summary-list"><li>US stocks were on a roll following Donald Trump's victory in last week's election.</li><li>Markets are banking on lower taxes and fewer restrictions on businesses.</li></ul>The week since the US elections was better for stocks than anyone other than Donald Trump's biggest supporters could have expected.Many parts of the market <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sectorspdrs.com/sectortracker">caught fire</a> ever since Republicans significantly outpaced polls on November 5. The consensus view among strategists is that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-invest-trump-win-election-stock-market-outlook-strategy-2024-11">US stocks are set up for success during Trump's next term</a>, as they believe his policies will benefit corporations and the economy.Sébastien Page, an investment chief and head of global multi-asset at T. Rowe Price, is mostly on board with this upbeat sentiment. He told Business Insider last week that the post-election relief rally checks out, as markets finally have more clarity about policy in the next four years."The reduction in the uncertainty that we had going into the election — that's good for stocks," Page said in an interview, as are the possibilities of deregulation and corporate tax cuts.Even more vital for stocks is the economic growth backdrop. Widely followed indicators like GDP growth and the unemployment rate <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/economy-outlook-tariffs-trump-trade-war-slowdown-jpmorgan-david-kelly-2024-10">suggest that the US is already on solid ground</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/consumer-confidence">consumer sentiment is rebounding strongly</a> from perplexingly low levels.While there have been signs of softness in the labor market, including <a target="_blank" href="https://data.bls.gov/timeseries/ces0000000001?output_view=net_1mth">lackluster job additions in four of the last five months</a>, Page expects the economic expansion to roll on — at least for now."The probability of recession is rarely zero, but my view is, it's unlikely for the next 12 months," Page said.<h2 id="d6647ee1-0cb2-4d09-9bed-457944a6aa59">3 key risks to watch heading into 2025</h2>Although Page is optimistic about the path forward for stocks and the economy, he thinks investors shouldn't ignore three risks that could cause a market reversal.Chief among Page's concerns is that valuations are historically high and leave little room for error on the earnings front.The S&amp;P 500's 35.6% rise in the last 12 months and 67% gain since its bear-market low in October 2022 has pushed the index's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio to over 22x. That's the <a target="_blank" href="https://yardeni.com/charts/stock-market-p-e-ratios/">one of the richest marks in the last two decades</a>, and it suggests this supportive backdrop is no secret.<div type="image" title="S&amp;P 500 val 11-12-24" height="1120" width="1990" msid="115253245" hostid="261" sizebytes="168202"></div>And even if growth stays robust, stocks may have already pulled forward future gains."If you had to summarize my view, I'm positive on the economy, but I think it's mainly priced in," Page said.If earnings continue to defy expectations, as they have again in the third quarter, stocks could keep climbing. Profits increased about 7.1% in Q3, which is much higher than <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-invest-q3-earnings-season-recession-risk-investing-strategy-2024-10">the 4.6% that analysts were calling for</a>. That's an underrated reason why stocks have done so well lately.But otherwise, it's quite possible that the S&amp;P 500 could give back much of its recent gains."There's a lot priced in," Page said. "The earnings expectations for next year are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-invest-q3-earnings-season-recession-risk-investing-strategy-2024-10">about 15% growth</a>. We're tracking at around 9% growth this year."Page added: "Earnings coming up is good, but high expectations can lead to disappointment."Stocks often perform well in expansions, the investment chief said, though there are exceptions.In 2022, the S&amp;P 500 had its worst year since the financial crisis, <a target="_blank" href="https://pages.stern.nyu.edu/~adamodar/New_Home_Page/datafile/spearn.htm">even as earnings ticked up</a>. Stocks were plagued by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inflation-cpi-price-growth-june-2022-7">multi-decade high inflation</a>, interest rate hikes, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gdp-q2-economic-growth-recession-inflation-hiring-us-recovery-progress-2022-7">two quarters of negative GDP</a>, and geopolitical flare-ups like Russia's invasion of Ukraine.Most of those concerns have since been neutralized, though new ones could pop up whenever."There's always tail risks, and next year it could be geopolitics — maybe another oil shock," Page said. "But I don't personally see a repeat of '22, unless something major happens to maybe commodity markets, or a major disappointment in earnings — something unexpected in terms of some of those flagship companies that are dominating the market."The last major concern Page cited is one that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-outlook-trump-president-economy-tariffs-trade-war-kelly-2024-11">many market observers have warned about lately</a>: a global trade war defined by steep tariffs, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/election-trump-harris-economy-inflation-stock-market-volatility-risk-orlik-2024-10">which could hurt growth and spark inflation</a>."The market might be underestimating the potential impact of trade wars that could be disruptive," Page said. "Maybe the market is thinking, 'This is a problem for another day,' and we'll see. But the president has more power over trade policy than fiscal, and all those expectations [are] for lower taxes, so maybe the market's underestimating this a little bit."Trump <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/economy/trump-favors-huge-new-tariffs-how-do-they-work">has hinted</a> that he'll put 60% tariffs on Chinese imports and up to 20% tariffs on other foreign goods, though even some of his outspoken critics have said that he might be bluffing. That's Page's hunch as well."It's not necessarily what is actually going to happen," Page said. "With this administration, there's a tendency to use tariffs as part of a strategy to bring manufacturing into the country, as a negotiation tool."If Trump actually implements such tariffs, pundits like Anthony Scaramucci have said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-crash-risk-outlook-trump-deportation-tariff-anthony-scaramucci-2024-11">there'd be a major market meltdown</a>. Page had no such call, but even if there was a modest pullback, the investment chief wouldn't necessarily complain."We like to buy when markets sell off," Page said.

A sixth-grade social science textbook that I read described India as a piece of fabric, with countless threads coloured in a myriad of majestic shades, woven together. This metaphor holds exceptionally well when put into the context of our <keyword id="22706215" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="handloom-industry" source="keywords">handloom industry</keyword>. India has a rich history of handlooms and weaving cultures. The culture of handlooms is so intricately woven into Indian culture, that there are whole towns dedicated to the same: <keyword id="248532" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chanderi" source="Orion">Chanderi</keyword> in Madhya Pradesh to Pochampally in Telangana and a dozen more! Unfortunately, the handloom industry in India is dying. The struggle is multi-faceted, ranging from a declining workforce to fierce competition from <keyword id="20496028" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="power-looms" source="keywords">power looms</keyword>. Hence, five years ago, August 7 was proclaimed <keyword id="22677698" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Handloom-Day" source="keywords">National Handloom Day</keyword> in response to this crisis and to heighten public awareness. This date holds special historical significance, commemorating the initiation of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905—a pivotal act of defiance against British colonial rule. <h2>When did this industry come into existence?</h2>According to archaeological findings, the origins of handloom in the Indian subcontinent may be traced back to the Indus Valley Civilization. The Mughal Empire was known to support and patronise <keyword id="20258864" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="weavers" source="keywords">weavers</keyword>. The support from the royal patrons resulted in the invention of new textiles such as ‘Mulmul’ and ‘Banarasi Brocade’ among others. This era witnessed a heightened worldwide demand for Indian textiles. In the 17th century, India produced 25% of the world’s textiles, with Bengal accounting for more than 50% of textiles and 80% of silks imported by the Dutch from Asia. <h2>What led to the decline of the <keyword id="19934660" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-handloom" source="keywords">Indian handloom</keyword>?</h2>The East India Company's entry fuelled the industry's initial decline, which started in the 1830s. The weavers were obliged to sell only to the British, and that too at exceedingly cheap prices, virtually putting them out of business. On the other hand, Indian cloth was taxed excessively to promote machine-made British clothing. The Industrial Revolution in Britain strengthened their indigenous textile industry, giving rise to new markets for cheaper textiles. In India, the collapse of the Mughal aristocracies meant no access to royal patronage. As a result, textiles like Khadi and muslin had little demand in the market. Circling back to the present, the industry is facing both similar and new challenges. Fabrics made on power looms are cheaper and faster to produce, in comparison to handloom fabrics. The industry is largely unorganised, and the wages are shockingly low. 67% of <keyword id="22706216" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="handloom-workers" source="keywords">handloom workers</keyword> are earning less than the minimum wage every month. Faced with economic challenges, the older artisans are thus forced to encourage the newer generation to choose an alternative career path. This migration of the workforce from a traditional sector is evident from the fall in the number of weavers less than 35 years of age- from 26.13 lakh in 2009-10 to 16.07 lakh in 2019-20. The majority of weavers do not have access to banking facilities, let alone institutional credit. The Handloom Census 2019-20 mentions that the industry employs about 35,22,512 workers across the country, with women forming 77.29% of the workforce. India is the second largest exporter of handloom products in the world, with exports valued at $ 353.9 million in 2017- 18, as per EXIM bank's working papers. The major handloom export centres are Karur, Panipat, Varanasi and Kannur where handloom products like bed linen, table linen, toilet linen, floor coverings, and embroidered textile materials and curtains etc. are produced for export markets.
