Reliance Jio has announced that the WiFi calling service will be rolled out pan-India between January 7 and January 16 and with this, it becomes the second telecom player to roll out VoWiFi services in the country. Commenting at the launch of VoWiFi calling services, Akash Ambani, Director, Jio, said, “At Jio, we are constantly innovating to enhance customer experience or solve their problems. At this juncture, when an average Jio consumer uses over 900 minutes of voice calls every month, and at a growing base of consumers, the launch of Jio Wi-Fi Calling will further enhance every Jio consumer’s voice-calling experience, which is already a benchmark for the industry with India’s-first all VoLTE network.” Jio VoWiFi is currently supported on over 150 smartphones. VoWiFi or Wi-Fi calling is a service where users can make or receive calls and SMS over a WiFi network. When you are connected to a Wi-Fi network and place a call from an eligible device, the call quality is boosted automatically. While Airtel’s VoWiFi service is officially supported only on the company’s Xstream Fiber broadband service, we were able to use it on non-Airtel Wi-Fi connections as well. So, what gives? <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/telecom/telecom-news/vodafone-idea-plans-to-get-back-in-the-game-with-4x-rise-in-capex-to-2-billion/articleshow/88308573.cms?from=mdr">Reportedly</a>, the promoters of the company are aiming to increase the annual capital expenditure by four-fold to $2 billion (approx. ₹15,200 crore). Clearly, the market caught a whiff of it. It’s not the first time that reports have claimed Vodafone Idea will infuse equity, but this time, it’s coming straight from the horse’s mouth – the report adds that these comments were made by the company’s senior management at an internal investors’ call this week. The increase in capex could help the telco catch up to its rivals Airtel and Reliance Jio in terms of technology and other aspects. Business Insider has reached out to Vodafone Idea for comments. For instance, Vodafone Idea did not launch Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) for several months after Airtel and Reliance Jio announced support across the country. Vodafone Idea currently spends an estimated $500 million (approx. ₹3,800 crore) in capex, while its rivals Airtel and Reliance Jio spend $3 billion (approx. ₹22,800 crore) each. At the end of September, 2021, Vodafone Idea had ₹250 crore in cash and cash equivalents, while its debt stood at ₹1.94 lakh crore. A four-fold boost is only possible if either the promoters, or private equity firms are ready to plough in equity into the third largest telecom company in India. While mobile subscribers have been the ones who have benefited so far thanks to rock-bottom data prices and free calls, things are starting to look dire for over 450 million users of Vodafone Idea, BSNL and MTNL. On one hand, Vodafone Idea is fighting for its survival after the Supreme Court directed it to pay its AGR dues worth ₹53,000 crore. Added to that, the merged entity has not been spending on its network, leaving its customers frustrated. Those who continue to use the services are also wondering if the crisis might affect their connections. On the other hand, state-run BSNL and MTNL are facing an acute crunch of staff after more than 90,000 employees opted for the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/almost-94000-bsnl-and-mtnl-employees-apply-for-vrs-amidst-union-protest/articleshow/72234229.cms">voluntary retirement scheme</a> (VRS) offered by the Modi government.
