"My daughter told me 'Mom, this is kind of a big deal. The guy just underneath you, he spends $2 million a year to get these kinds of results.'"<br /><br />In contrast, Hardison said she spends about $300 a month on supplements. The rest of her <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blue-zone-lifestyle-healthy-habits-live-longer-cheap-2023-9">longevity routine costs little or nothing </a>to follow, and there's good science to suggest her habits have helped keep her young and healthy.<br /><br />"My philosophy is, find what you love, find something that works for you that you could do long-term over your life, and be moderate," she said.<br /><br /><h2><strong>Her diet includes big salads, chocolate, and homemade bread</strong></h2>The foundation of a healthy life is a reliable routine, plenty of homemade bread, and a little treat every day, according to Hardison.<br /><br />Hardison said she's been a health-conscious eater since she was a teen, watching fad diets come and go. She swears by a moderate approach using principles of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-intuitive-eating-does-it-work-2020-1">intuitive eating</a> while also being mindful of nutrition.<br /><br />"I'll listen to my body. I will only eat what I love. I savor what I eat," she said.<br /><br />These days, she wakes up around 6 a.m. While one of the biggest longevity trends, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/intermittent-fasting-benefits-and-risks-for-longevity-weight-loss-cancer-2024-4">intermittent fasting</a>, involves waiting to eat until a certain time of day, Hardison isn't about that life, and starts her day with a big slice of toast and a glass of chocolate milk.<br /><br />The bread for her toast is always homemade and whole wheat since she isn't a fan of processed foods.<br /><br />  <div type="image" title="A batch of homemade chocolate-chip cookies" height="1414" width="2119" msid="111265319" hostid="261"></div>"We don't eat out a lot just because I think my food's better and I think it's healthier. Later in the day, she enjoys another slice of bread.<br /><br />For dessert, she has a piece of chocolate or a homemade cookie. When the weather allows, she does her cardio in the pool instead. I think it's important to find what you love enough that you look forward to it," she said.<br /><br /><h2><strong>Don't <em>try</em> to live forever</strong></h2>Unlike many longevity gurus or biohacking enthusiasts, Hardison said she isn't interested in being forever young.<br /><br />"Growing old is amazing and it's wonderful," she said. "You can only get how sweet it is to have had the experience of life, the good, the bad, the hard things, you only get that by doing it."<br /><br />Her parents lived into their 90s but, over time, experienced cognitive decline that severely affected their ability to enjoy the things they used to.<br /><br />"I do not want to go through what they went through," Hardison said. said. "People that maybe are my kid's generation, they're like, 'Well, don't you want to live to 130? No, I don't."<br /><br />Instead, she's focusing on finding a balance of habits that keep her healthy and able to bask in the life and relationships she's built over the years.<br /><br />"I'm not trying to stave off old age. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Julie Clark Gibson is beating <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/bryan-johnson-before-and-after-anti-aging-longevity-supplements-2023-8">Bryan Johnson</a> in the Rejuvenation Olympics by spending far less.</li><li>The woman told Fortune she mainly spends money on gym and supplement costs.</li></ul><p>Maybe it doesn't take millions of dollars, over 100 daily supplements, and a team of 30 doctors to combat the aging process.</p><p>Millionaire Bryan Johnson has made a name for himself with his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/tech-executive-shared-two-million-daily-routine-age-reverse-2023-7">rigorous health routines</a> in his quest to have the biological health of someone 18 — which even at one point included <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/millionaire-bryan-johnson-swapped-blood-with-teenage-son-young-blood-2023-5">receiving blood transfusions</a> from his 17-year-old son. But, at least one gauge of biological aging suggests that a simpler approach might be better.</p><p>Julie Gibson Clark, a woman who <a target="_blank" href="https://fortune.com/well/2023/11/04/longevity-women-biohackers-diet-exercise-bryan-johnson/">told Fortune</a> her biggest anti-aging expenses total out to around $108 a month, appears to be beating Johnson in the <a target="_blank" href="https://rejuvenationolympics.com/">Rejuvenation Olympics</a>. The online leaderboard was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.vox.com/money/23798848/deaging-longevity-billionaires-rejuvenation-olympics">launched</a> by Johnson earlier this year and ranks thousands of participants on the pace of their biological aging using DNA tests over the course of six months or more.</p><p>Clark currently ranks second in the Rejuvenation Olympics, which estimates the 55-year-old woman ages about 0.665 of a year for every full year going forward. Meanwhile, 46-year-old Johnson is ranked sixth on the list and ages about 0.72 of a year.</p><p>Johnson directed Insider to a <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/bryan_johnson/status/1721578475759239658?s=20">post on X</a> regarding Fortune's story.</p><p>"It's a victory that in a <a target="_blank" class="css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1cvl2hr r-1loqt21 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0" href="https://twitter.com/FortuneMagazine">@FortuneMagazine </a>profile, speed of aging is now a topic of status, intrigue, slight, drama and competition," Johnson wrote. "Exactly why I started the Rejuvenation Olympics. Every day, every single one of us plays the game DON'T DIE; looking both ways before crossing the street, changing the smoke alarm battery. The future is becoming masters at not dying."</p><p>Clark did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment on the current health rankings ahead of publication.</p><p>Clark told Fortune she spends $27 per month on a gym membership and pays $79 per month for a NOVOS subscription that gives her access to supplements. The woman told the publication she is "health conscious," but is able to make it work on a salary of less than $100,000.</p><p>Like Johnson, her health routine includes fasting and working out, Clark told Fortune. The 55-year-old said she wakes up everyday between 4:45 a.m. and 5 a.m., but fasts for about 16 hours, eating her first meal of the day around 10 or 11 a.m. She spends time on cardio and strength training, meditates, and eats about 16 ounces of vegetables every day.</p><p>In the past, Johnson has detailed his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/bryan-johnson-anti-aging-blueprint-daily-routine-habits-2023-9#:~:text=Bryan%20Johnson%20calls%20himself%20the,sleep%2C%20exercise%2C%20and%20diet.">anti-aging regimen,</a> which he has said costs him about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/tech-executive-shared-two-million-daily-routine-age-reverse-2023-7">$2 million per year</a>. He's said he follows over 200 protocols from his "Blueprint." The routine includes <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bryan-johnson-biotech-ceo-anti-aging-mush-diet-project-blueprint-2023-9">eating a strict diet</a>, involving a blend of vegetables and lentils, as well as consuming 111 supplements daily. The millionaire also said he eats all of his meals before 11 a.m. each day.</p><p>Johnson has also said he's used more eccentric methods, such as performing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/bryan-johnson-longevity-braintree-anti-aging-penis-erectile-dysfunction-2023-8">shockwave therapy</a> on his penis or using red light therapy and ultrasounds, to try and reverse his biological age.</p><p>Ultimately, Clark told Fortune that healthy habits have to be something that can be easily folded into your daily life.</p><p>"This stuff has to just kind of be like brushing your teeth," Clark said.</p><p>Anti-aging trends have become increasingly popular in recent years. Heading into <keyword id="1581035" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tokyo-2020">Tokyo 2020</keyword>, they were ready to do it again. But then the Olympic games were postponed. For over a year, the best team in the world had no one to play.</p><p><strong>Maggie Steffens</strong>: I almost think of it as a grieving period. We had been thinking of this one thing, and it had been taken away from us.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: That's team captain and two-time gold medalist Maggie Steffens. This year, she's helped keep the team together and in shape.</p><p><strong>Adam Krikorian</strong>: Below the water is going to be very physical, a lot of grabbing, kicking, punching that you don't necessarily see.</p><p><strong>Maggie</strong>: You have to be able to do all this in the weight room, jump in the pool, swim up and down, wrestle with somebody, not have any ground, and shoot a ball past the best goalie in the world.</p><p><strong>Adam</strong>: Cover some ground and move forward.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: We spent a week with the Olympic water polo team to see how it's training to defend gold.</p><p><strong>Maggie</strong>: We train six days a week, and we train each day for about six and a half to seven hours. And Sundays are our one off day.</p><p>We get up anywhere probably between 5:30 and 6. I think the secret to water polo is legs, deadlifts, back squats, RDLs, lunges. We're constantly throwing the ball, catching the ball, swimming, pulling. So we really need to develop our shoulders. We want to get strong. We want to be able to endure the physical demands you need for water polo.</p><p>This is where the magic happens. We spent hours here to get ready for Tokyo.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: In the morning, the women swim laps and do drill work.</p><p><strong>Maggie</strong>: Water polo is a lot of cardio. We're always, always, always working.</p><p><strong>Adam</strong>: Two more laps before we partner up.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: During practice, the team focuses on fundamentals like the egg beater.</p><p><strong>Maggie</strong>: Or treading water. This is our standing, the base foundation of our sport. It allows us to stay above water and play this game.</p><p><strong>Adam</strong>: The emphasis this week is on defense. So you'll see a lot of defensive drills today.</p><p>They're going to release back to that same spot. As they're releasing, I'm trying to get up in the lane.</p><p>Now we're in maybe my favorite portion of practice, which is passing. If you can't pass, you can't play.</p><p><strong>Maggie</strong>: We're passing in pairs, which makes it a lot harder because every time you pass, you gotta be able to rejuvenate your body, receive the ball and keep doing it. This is our base position for holding a water polo ball. She can use her core, her legs and her shoulders to execute a pass a shot.</p><p><strong>Adam</strong>: Being able to pass the ball accurately and being able to elevate yourself out of the water takes a tremendous amount of leg strength. And one of the things that we do in order to improve that leg strength is use these weighted belts. So these are probably about 9 pounds. After they're clipped on, they end up doing anywhere from 20 to 30, sometimes 40 minutes of passing drills.</p><p>Right after you pass, you've got to get back to those strokes and then be ready to receive the next ball.</p><p><strong>Maggie</strong>: We swim head up so you can see the ball, see the players, see the game, and she's ready to execute her next play. This is what we call our dribbling. So we put the ball in front of our face and we use our elbows and our strokes to almost create a channel for the ball to float. You're using every single muscle in your body. You can even see the concentration and focus in her face.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: At another station, the players are strapped into bands.</p><p><strong>Maggie</strong>: That band is attached to the wall, and they're going to be pulling the band as far as they can using all of their strength and actually going against the people on the other side. So it's also kind of a fun competition to see who's stronger.</p><p>So if you just practice shooting and you feel great, that's not really preparing yourself for a high intensity moment in a game. So we incorporate conditioning drills, like using the bands to get ourselves tired, to practice while we're tired and then go and shoot and try to be intelligent, smart, and execute. You have to be able to get past that breaking point. Mentally, you have to be able to visualize yourself and say, okay, I can do this no matter how tired I am, no matter how my body feels. No matter my doubt.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: Next, athletes have time to rest. Maggie heads to treatment for a shoulder injury.</p><p><strong>Larnie Boquiren</strong>: Common injuries that we see for water polo players is a lot of shoulders, a lot of hips, necks, fingers, low back. Like any overhead athlete, repetitive movement in their shooting and with swimming plays a great toll on their body.</p><p><strong>Adam</strong>: We always begin afternoon practice with a team meeting.</p><p><strong>Maggie</strong>: In the afternoons, we tend to do a lot more gameplay, some sort of scrimmage. They'll be playing for about 45 minutes. It's pretty nonstop, super physical, lots of up and down. And it's going to be a battle.</p><p><strong>Adam</strong>: Get up on your legs quickly. [whistle blowing]</p><p><strong>Adam</strong>: 2-0.</p><p><strong>Adam</strong>: Look. Make sure there's eye contact before you pass it.</p><p><strong>Adam</strong>: 7-5. Go.</p><p><strong>Maggie</strong>: You can see it getting a bit heated, very competitive. So underwater, the ref doesn't see, but somebody might have a hold of my suit. I mean you can see scratches, which is part of the game.</p><p><strong>Maddie Musselman</strong>: I think that competition is really a huge part of our sport. Being able to play all these different styles and the different teams that are going to be playing at the Olympics.</p><p><strong>Adam</strong>: We would typically play anywhere from 40 to 45 games in the calendar year leading up to an Olympic Games.</p><p><strong>Narrator</strong>: But with <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> banned and competitions canceled ...</p><p><strong>Adam</strong>: This year, we've played zero. We haven't played a game in a year and a half.</p><p><strong>Maggie</strong>: You can never really replace a game. During a game, you are juggling so many thoughts in your mind. You're thinking about the other team. You're thinking about maybe the shot you just missed. It moves so quick. A scrimmage is the closest thing we can get to it.</p><p><strong>Stephania Haralabidis</strong>: It's a really hard thing because we have to be super physical with each other. And we're friends, we're teammates, we're a family, but when we're in the water, we're playing against each other. It's super physical and that's how it's supposed to be for us to win.</p><p><strong>Maggie</strong>: I think the challenges that come with being a water polo player at this level is just the demand -- the demand on your body. But hopefully soon we'll all be on the same side. So we won't be facing each other as teammates, but we'll be a team facing another country, another opponent. And then I'm going to know exactly what Paige Hauschild wants. Rachel Fattal knows me. She knows my weaknesses and can kind of supplement me there. She knows my strengths and exactly where I want the ball.</p><p><strong>Adam</strong>: The consecutive wins certainly put a target on our back. Anytime you have success, the target gets a little bigger, and then you add the three letters USA, and that'll do it. But we wouldn't want it any other way. That brings the best out of us as well.</p><p><strong>Maggie</strong>: I think if COVID has taught us one thing is that we don't know what's going to happen. Hopefully I'm healthy enough and still a good enough player to continue playing this sport. But for now, I'm focused on Tokyo. Hopefully do well at the Olympics and hopefully bring home the gold from the Olympics.</p><p><strong>Producer</strong>: Which teams are you most worried about?</p><p><strong>Maddie</strong>: I'm not worried about anyone.</p>

<p>Tokyo's <keyword id="6358021" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="budget">budget</keyword> is already dubiously small compared to historical precedent or rival Istanbul's bid, which neared $20 billion, even if the Japanese plan<span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> to reuse </span><a href="http://gizmodo.com/tokyos-clever-plan-to-retrofit-1964-olympic-stadia-for-1277311713">1964 Olympic stadiums as a way to keep costs down</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The real reason to suspect</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> Tokyo's Olympic budget, however, is because Olympic Games always go over budget. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">According to data collected by Professor Bent Flyvbjerg of Oxford's Saïd Business School, every Olympic Game since 1960 that has reliable data on final costs (16 games) has overrun its original budget.</span></p>
<p>Professor Flyvbjerg found that there was an average cost overrun of 179 percent in real terms. That's a pretty absurd figure. In fact, given how frequently Olympic costs inflate during construction, it has become expected - which is a weird situation, when you think about it.</p>
<p>As Professor Flyvbjerg and Allison Stewart write in a working paper:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">A budget is typically established as the maximum - or, alternatively, the expected - value to be spent on a project. However, in the Games the budget is more like a fictitious minimum that is consistently overspent. Further, even more than in other megaprojects, each budget is established with a legal requirement for the host city and country government to guarantee that they will cover the cost overruns of the Games. These data suggest that this guarantee is akin to writing a blank cheque for a purchase, with the certainty that the cost will be more than what has been quoted.</p>
<p>As Professor Flyvbjerg's research notes, the fact that 11 host cities apparently never even bothered to uncover or publish their overruns is also worrying.</p>
<p>Of course, recent events don't look too good for Tokyo either. London's 2012 Summer Olympic Games overran by 101% in real terms, according to Professor Flyvbjerg. The next games, the 2014 Winter Olympic Games being held in Sochi, Russia, is on track to be the most expensive games ever, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sochi-olympics-cost-russia-51-billion-2013-2">with an estimated $51 billion in costs</a> - quite a bit more than the original $12 billion bid. The cost for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio has been creeping up, a prominent factor in this<a href="http://www.newyorker.com/talk/financial/2013/07/08/130708ta_talk_surowiecki"> summer's violent Brazilian protests</a>.</p>
<p>The odds are against it being any different for Tokyo, and you have to wonder if it'll be worth it. Kazumasa Oguro, an associate professor of economics at Hosei University, told Fortune <a href="http://finance.fortune.cnn.com/2013/09/12/tokyo-olympics/">this week that he expected</a> the positive economic impact of the games to be around 3 trillion yen ($30 billion) between 2013 to 2020. "Tiny," according to Oguro.</p>
<p>However the games aren't all about financial value. Look at the city of Barcelona, which hosted the Summer Games in 1992 - widely held up as one of the best games ever. Not only did the <keyword id="6360967" type="SPORT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Olympics">Olympics</keyword> rejuvenate the city, many <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-the-olympic-games-changed-barcelona-forever-2012-7">suspect they helped make Spain one of the dominant sporting nations of recent years</a>. According to Professor Flyvbjerg's research, the Barcelona games came in at 417% over budget, but few people seem to remember that now.</p>

Why Tokyo's Olympic Costs Will Almost Certainly Overrun The $5 Billion Budget

There is some evidence they might improve your health as you age.<br /><br />But the problem arises when individuals begin to substitute natural vitamin and mineral sources with these multivitamins instead of just using them to supplement their nutritional needs. Think of it like this, they are merely a potential sidekick, not a superhero, in your quest for well-being.<br /><br />The study has found no link between multivitamins and living longer. People who take multivitamins often have healthier lifestyles overall – they eat better, exercise more, and tend to have a lower body mass index (BMI). On the other hand, there was a slightly higher death rate among multivitamin users in the initial years, possibly because people with underlying health concerns were more likely to take them. This makes it difficult to isolate the true effect of the multivitamins themselves.<br /><br />Meanwhile, excessive doses or interactions with medications can be harmful. For example, beta-carotene supplements increase lung cancer risk in smokers, and vitamin K can mess with blood thinners. There is another glaring problem of the lack of regulation. Unlike prescription drugs, multivitamins aren't rigorously regulated. Insider Today: Delta's bougie new lounge

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Bryan Johnson, a biotech founder, aims to have the body of an 18-year-old, Bloomberg reported.</li><li>He and a team of experts started a program called Project Blueprint to unlock the key to aging.</li></ul><p>Bryan Johnson is 45 years old but, according to a new report, his test results show he has the heart of a 37-year-old and the lungs of a young adult.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bryan-johnson-os-fund-science-startups-2018-8">Johnson</a> is a biotech entrepreneur who hopes to game nature's course of aging and have the organs and health of an 18-year-old by going through an intense data-driven experimental program he's called <a href="https://blueprint.bryanjohnson.co/#brain-health" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Project Blueprint</a>.</p><p>According to a recent <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2023-01-25/anti-aging-techniques-taken-to-extreme-by-bryan-johnson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bloomberg profile of the CEO</a>, Johnson could spend up to $2 million on his body this year and there are early glimpses that show he may be on track to unlocking the secret to age reversal.</p><p>Test results from doctors suggest that Johnson has the heart of a 37-year-old, the skin of a 28-year-old, and the lung capacity of an 18-year-old, Bloomberg's Ashlee Vance reported.</p><p>The program is led by Oliver Zolman, a 29-year-old physician who calls himself the "rejuvenation doctor," and is supported by a team of more than 30 health experts, according to the report.</p><p>While it's still in its experimental stage and is constantly being tweaked, the health program consists of an intense daily regimen of carefully curated supplements, meals, exercise, and a slew of bodily tests.</p><p>Johnson's 5 a.m.-mornings for example start with two dozen medicines and supplements for all kinds of purported health benefits: lycopene; turmeric, zinc, metformin to prevent bowel polyps, and a small dose of lithium for brain health, Johnson told Bloomberg.</p><p>Although there is some evidence that lithium can treat mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder, there is scant evidence that it can rejuvenate cells or preserve memory. There is also the risk of lithium toxicity when taken in high dosages.</p><p>His meals, a mix of solid and soft foods, are vegan and restricted to 1,977 calories a day. He exercises daily, with three high-intensity workouts a week, and goes through blood tests, MRIs, and colonoscopies each month, Bloomberg reported.</p><p>"What I do may sound extreme, but I'm trying to prove that self-harm and decay are not inevitable," Johnson told the outlet.</p><p>His efforts in 2021 have amounted to what Johnson claims to be a world record epigenetic age reversal of 5.1 years.</p><p>Doctors say he has the gum inflammation of a 17-year-old, and a device that tracks Johnson's rate of nighttime erections is like that of a teenager's, Bloomberg reported.</p><p>"Epigenetic age is like an experimental measure," Zolman told Insider. "It's kind of an easy way of doing all the direct measurements across all the organs."</p><p>Zolman said that each organ has various "markers" that can be looked at to determine how Johnson's organs compare to that of a 37 or 17-year-old.</p><p>For example, a marker for gums can be gum recession which increases with age, he said, and you can compare Johnson's to the average 18-year-old.<br /><br />Zolman qualified that this is not evidence to say that Johnson reduced his age in every organ by five years. He added that there needs to be more long-term data that shows consistent "reduction" of the markers.</p><p>Johnson hopes to encourage others to follow his data- and medical-driven program by turning his relentless pursuit of youthfulness into a competition.</p><p>Recently, he started a website called <a href="https://rejuvenationolympics.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rejuvenation Olympics</a>, which displays an "epigenetic leaderboard," ranking the 1,750 people in the world who are fighting against Father Time.</p><p>Johnson currently stands in first place.</p><p><em><strong>Editors note, Wednesday, February 1, 2023:</strong> This story has been updated to include additional information about epigenetic age and to clarify the supplements and medicines taken by Johnson.</em></p>

Some businesses will likely need to run shorter operating hours, and services might take longer (or cost a premium). Say goodbye to two-day shipping and apologies, but the gym is closing early for the foreseeable future.</p><p>I don't bring this up as a bad thing. God knows I could wait a few more days to get the stuff I purchased on Amazon. But it's a scenario worth considering. </p><p>Take <a style="text-decoration: underline;" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/4-day-workweek-evidence-prevent-burnout-productivity-ai-well-being-2023-4">the four-day workweek</a>, which has gained considerable momentum over the past few years. For it to work, we'd probably need people to take their extra day off throughout the week instead of just on Fridays or Mondays. </p><p>And lest we forget the overachievers willing to stick to the 9-to-5. He used reigning Defensive Player of the Year Gobert in the middle and played lineups featuring players like the 6-foot-7 Jaylen Brown and 6-foot-8 Harrison Barnes at center to spread the floor. The U.S. often struggled on the boards and had no rim protection as a result. Mitchell, strangely, was less involved in the final quarter, while Kemba Walker, perhaps the face of the team, struggled with an off-shooting night. Walker had a chance to cut France's lead to three with 42 seconds remaining, but missed two of three free throws, essentially ending the U.S. bid.</p><p>Now, however, Team USA doesn't simply get to go home. They are now entered into the third-place bracket, set to face Serbia, a team who many thought could beat the U.S. before they lost a stunning upset to Argentina. The U.S. not only gets a tough Serbia team, with no chance at winning gold, but they must also compete in the "losers'" bracket. Team USA hit with stunning loss in the FIBA World Cup that comes with a worse fate

With the&#xa0;2015 World Championships right around the corner, Bolt's times were so off this summer that even he had to admit that&#xa0;something was up. After running a 20.29-second 200 meters in New York in June - a time that didn't even crack the top-20 in the world in 2015 - Bolt sounded lost.</p><p>"I really don't know what happened today," <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2015/jun/13/usain-bolt-200m-new-york-icahn-adidas-grand-prix">he told the Guardian</a>. "We've just go to go back to the drawing board and figure it out."</p><p>"This season is not going so smoothly,"&#xa0;he&#xa0;added. "I'm trying to figure out what's going on. I need to get on top of things. With this pace, it looks like trouble."</p><p><div><iframe width="620" height="349" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/JNH67Qy5yRI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div></p><p class="embed-spacer">Two weeks later he <a href="http://olympictalk.nbcsports.com/2015/06/25/usain-bolt-jamaican-championships/">pulled out of the Jamaican Championships</a> and announced <a href="http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/athletics/33336268">he wouldn't be competing in two Diamond League events with a pelvic&#xa0;injury</a>, his second significant injury in four months.&#xa0;His lone&#xa0;encouraging result came less&#xa0;a month before the World Championships, when he ran a 9.87-second 100 meters on a rain-soaked track in&#xa0;London.</p><p>In the weeks before the&#xa0;World Championships - to be held&#xa0;in the same Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing where a 22-year-old Bolt exploded onto the scene seven years earlier&#xa0;-&#xa0;Bolt found himself in the unlikely role of the underdog. American Justin Gatlin had 2015's fastest times in both the 100m and 200m, and hadn't lost a race in two years.</p><p>The narrative seemed ready-made: Gatlin (<a href="http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/athletics/34020876">the villain</a>) would beat an injured, out-of-form Bolt at the World Championships, setting up a rematch at the Olympics 12 months from now. If everyone stuck to the script,&#xa0;a rejuvenated Bolt would avenge his loss in Rio, restore order to the track universe, and maybe even walk into the sunset, retiring&#xa0;as the world's greatest sprinter at age 30.</p><p>It would have been a great story, but it&#xa0;was never going to happen. Its observation deck sits at<span> 1,821 feet, and is <a href=" http://www.businessinsider.com/dubais-burj-khalifa-observation-deck-2014-10#ixzz3i8mB0LGC">the highest observation deck in the world,</a> giving the building its <span>fourth Guinness World Record, along with the world's tallest building, tallest man-made structure, and highest restaurant.</span></span></span></p><h3><strong>7. It's also building the biggest airport in the world</strong></h3><p>Dubai's <span>Al Maktoum International Airport is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dubais-new-airport-will-be-biggest-in-the-world-2014-9#ixzz3i8ngXu7z">undergoing a massive $32 billion expansion</a> that will make it the world's largest airport, at a whopping <span>54 square miles. Billed as the "8th Wonder of the World," it is the world's largest man-made island, cost $12.3 billion to build, and is made of 3.3 billion cubic feet of sand. </p><p>Even more outrageous is The World, an archipelago of islands that literally forms a map of the world, allowing the insanely rich to "buy a country." </p><h3><strong>9. It has more than 1,200 stores, a 22-screen movie theater with 2,800 seats, a copy of London's famous Regent Street, a giant aquarium, as well as an Olympic-sized ice skating rink. It is also one of<span> </span>the world's most-visited shopping destinations<span>, <a href="http://www.thedubaimall.com/en/visit/">having attracted a record</a><span><a href="http://www.thedubaimall.com/en/visit/"> 80 million visitors in 2014</a>. </span></span> </p><h3><strong>10. But it's building an even bigger mall</strong></h3><p>Why have the world's biggest mall when you can have the world's two biggest malls? Since there's no competition quite like competing with oneself, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/worlds-largest-mall-opening-in-dubai-2014-7">Dubai announced last year</a> that it is building a huge temperature-controlled "city" of a shopping complex, said to house eight million-square-feet of retail space once completed. Called the "Mall of The World," the <span>entire project will be 48 million square feet in size, and include approximately 100 hotels, a theme park, and medical tourism facilities.</span></p><h3><strong>11. But it obviously doesn't end there, as they've created a veritable winter wonderland complete with live penguins, tobogganing, and ice sculptures.</p><h3><strong>12. It's also planning to build more insane developments underwater</strong></h3><p>Maybe winning above-sea level superlatives was becoming too easy, but Dubai has its sights set on developing what's under water. While it already has <a href="The Underwater Suites at Atlantis, The Palm in Dubai offers luxurious underwater accommodations with large windows that feature up-close views of marine life. To access the underwater suites, guests enter the ground floor, located above water and descend three floors. The rooms come with one aquarium wall for viewing. Its horse races feature multi-million dollar prizes</span></strong></h3><p>Nothing in Dubai is half baked, and thus the Dubai World Cup, the world's richest horse race, attracts racers the world over to compete for the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/afp-prince-bishop-wins-dubai-world-cup-2015-3">grand prize of almost $10 million</a> - and the day's nine races total a prize money of $30 million. </p><h3><strong>14. There's an $817 scoop of ice cream</strong></h3><p>Scoopi Cafe in Dubai has an ice cream called "Black Diamond," which is made with Italian truffles, Iranian saffron, and 23 carats of edible gold. Oh, and it comes in a Swarovski cocktail glass made with a diamond-filled stem, which you get to keep.
