Ronanki Kurmanath, <keyword id="20028379" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Meteorological-Department" source="keywords">Meteorological Department</keyword>, <keyword id="19896313" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh" source="keywords">Andhra Pradesh</keyword> Disaster Management Authority said, "A depression in the southwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclonic storm which is moving in a northwest direction at a speed of 10 km/h. It is located 440 km from Chennai, 460 km from Puducherry, and 530 km from Nellore." "The storm is expected to make landfall near the coast between Puducherry and Nellore by tomorrow morning. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in several places in the South Coast and Rayalaseema, with extremely heavy rainfall likely in some areas. Along the coast, wind speeds of 40-60 km/h are expected," said Kurmanath. The official further said that fishermen are advised not to venture out to sea and that the public should remain alert and take necessary precautions. Earlier, the India Meteorological Department said that the depression laid centre as of 5:30 pm on Tuesday over the southwest Bay of Bengal, about 490 kilometres from the east-southeast of Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The IMD further stated that the depression was likely to move north-westwards and cross the Onam coast close to Duqm during the early hours of October 16. "The depression over the west-central Arabian Sea off the Oman coast moved northwestwards with a speed of 23 kmph during the past 6 hours and lay centred at 1730 hours IST of October 15, 2024, over the same region near latitude 18.3°N and longitude 58.8°E, about 180 km southeast of Duqm (Oman), 260 km south of Masirah (Oman) and 520 km east-northeast of Salalah (Oman). It is likely to move nearly north-westwards and cross the Oman coast close to Duqm (Oman) during the early hours of October 16," the IMD stated. This development comes following the commencement of northeast monsoon rainfall activity over southeast peninsular India. Cyclonic Storm in Bay of Bengal to make landfall on Oct 17, heavy rains likely in South Coast, Rayalaseema

The 34-year-old Sreevani, who holds the tribal welfare portfolio in Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy-led Cabinet, was greeted by the chief minister, her ministerial colleagues and leaders of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP). This is the first child for Sreevani, one of the youngest deputy CMs in the country, and her husband Sathrucharla Parikshith Raju. When YSRCP came to power in 2019, Jagan Mohan Reddy picked Sreevani as one of the five deputies. She is the youngest minister in Jagan cabinet. The tribal leader represents Kurupam (ST) constituency in Vizianagaram district for a second consecutive term. IMD predicts severe heatwave conditions over East, South Peninsular India for next five days

A cyclone alert has been sounded in south coastal districts of <keyword id="37102" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="andhra-pradesh" source="Orion">Andhra Pradesh</keyword>, officials said on Thursday. The Indian Meteorological Department (<keyword id="6366970" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="imd" source="Orion">IMD</keyword>) has issued the cyclone Alert for north <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, <keyword id="6354306" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="puducherry" source="Orion">Puducherry</keyword> and south Andhra Pradesh coasts. This followed the deep depression over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal intensifying into a cyclonic storm. The storm has been named 'Mandous' pronounced 'Man-Dous', the IMD said. Under the impact of the cyclone, heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places are likely over the next three days in Prakasam, SRSP Nellore and Tirupati district in South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and in Chittoor, Annamayya and YSR Kadapa districts in Rayalaseema. Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority said that alert messages have been sent to over a million subscribers through common alert protocol. Authorities have been directed to regularly monitor the progress of the cyclonic storm. Five teams of <keyword id="119446" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-disaster-response-force" source="Orion">National Disaster Response Force</keyword> (NDRF) and four teams of State Disaster Response force (SDRF) were ready for rescue and relief operations. According to IMD, the cyclonic storm lay centered at 0530 hours about 530 km east-southeast of Karaikal and about 620 km southeast of Chennai. "It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coast between Puducherry and Sriharikota with a maximum sustained wind speed of 65-75 kmph gusting to 85 kmph around mid night of December 9," said IMD bulletin. Alert in south coastal Andhra for cyclone 'Mandous'

With deep depression over Bay of Bengal likely to intensify into a cyclone by Wednesday evening, the Met department has forecast heavy to very heavy rains over the next three days in parts of south coastal Andhra Pradesh. According to the <keyword id="6355166" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India-Meteorological-Department" source="Orion">India Meteorological Department</keyword> (IMD), the depression over Southeast and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a deep depression and lay centred at 05.30 hours about 770 km east-southeast of Karaikal and about 830 km southeast of Chennai. The deep depression is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify further gradually into a cyclonic Storm around evening of December 7 and reach Southwest Bay of Bengal off north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts by ADecember 8 morning. It will continue to move west-northwestwards towards north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts during subsequent 48 hours, the IMD said in a bulletin. Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places are very likely over coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal and adjoining areas off south coastal Andhra Pradesh on December 8. Heavy rain forecast for Andhra due to cyclone in Bay of Bengal

After many crests and troughs, the year of 2023’s cumulative monsoon rainfall has been deficient by 8% with muted activity in August. Unlike last year, India’s reservoir levels are low too, threatening the next cropping season as well. This year’s monsoon started on a dry note, with 10% deficiency in June, a slight rebound which saw 5% above normal in July. But August did not bring any cheer to a monsoon which also saw sharp inconsistencies in spatial distribution as well. Short spurts of heavy rainfall have caused flooding in some parts of the country which damaged crops while deficient rainfall in other parts has affected the sowing activity, says a report by CareEdge. A dry spell ahead Major agricultural regions like eastern Gangetic plains which ranges from eastern UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Southern West Bengal; and Southern Karnataka, Madhya Maharashtra, Rayalaseema in Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala continue to witness a significant deficit in the cumulative rainfall. Certain western regions like Saurashtra and Kutch, Western Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh continue to witness surplus rain. As the monsoon ends in August, little will change for Indian monsoon. “In the coming days, IMD expects subdued rainfall in the large part of the country with the exception of Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh that will receive surplus rainfall,” says a report by Bank of Baroda. Moreover, weak to moderate El Nino conditions are expected to lead to a prolonged dry spell The pulse of inflation While the rice sowing has picked up for rice after an initial deficit, pulses, certain cereals, jute and cotton continue to be deficient. Pulses, oil seeds and coarse grains are the most rain dependent crops in India. “Acreage of pulses has declined by 8.3% led by lower sowing of Arhar or <keyword id="71865" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tur-dal" source="Orion">tur dal</keyword> (-5.1%) and urad (-13.8%) compared with last year. The erratic progress of the southwest monsoon has resulted in a spike in the prices of the domestic food basket, which has a weightage of about 40% in the CPI inflation basket. “A drop in yield due to irregular monsoon and a lower acreage can lead to a demand-supply mismatch, further increasing inflationary pressures in the food basket. It said the low-pressure area formed this morning and is likely to turn into a depression in the next 24 hours. A low-pressure area is the first stage of any cyclone but it is not necessary that every low-pressure area intensifies into a cyclone. Under the influence of this low-pressure area and the resultant cyclonic circulation, light-to-moderate rainfall is likely at most places with heavy (6.5-12 cm) falls at isolated places over Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands on Friday and Saturday. From Saturday, rainfall will also lash Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, interior Karnataka and Marathwada. Kannababu</keyword>. As the Bay of Bengal sea is expected to be rough under the influence of the depression, Kannababu advised fishermen not to venture into the sea. Andhra braces for cyclone Nivar, dispatches SDRF and NDRF teams to Nellore

Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh), Jan 16 (IANS) A resident medical officer received the first Coronavirus vaccine in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool district on Saturday. "Kurnool government general hospital RMO Hemanalini received the first vaccine in the district. Vaccine officer and staff nurse Sarala Kumar administered the shot," said an official statement. Kurnool district has planned to vaccinate 100 health workers a day for four days a week in the first phase at 27 vaccination centres. The first phase of the vaccination drive kicked off on Saturday in the Rayalaseema district, where every centre has a district officer as special vaccination officer. "Please do not have any suspicions. If there are any side effects, we have readied everything to give the necessary treatment. Take the vaccine boldly," said Kurnool district collector Veerapandian. The district received 40,500 shots of the vaccine, which will be administered to 2,700 people on the first day. According to the Central and state government orders, 35,470 health workers will be administered with vaccination at 147 centres for four days a week in the first phase. Only those eligible people who have registered themselves and received the text message will be given the shot. Veerapandian said minors and pregnant women are not eligible for vaccination. In the second phase, the collector said that 47,037 people belonging to four frontline departments will be administered the vaccine shot at 199 vaccination centres. In the third phase, 5.57 lakh common people above 50 years of age and also people below 50 with comorbidities will be vaccinated in Kurnool district. --IANS sth/rs

The cyclone is very likely to move west northwestwards and cross Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram around Puducherry during Wednesday midnight and early hours on Thursday as a very severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph. Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) shared the information on Wednesday based on 11.30 a.m. report of <keyword id="10161038" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-cyclone-warning-division">the Cyclone Warning Division</keyword> of the India Meteorology Department (IMD). As per the latest report, the cyclone moved west-northwestwards with a speed of 11 kmph during past six hours and lay centred at 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday over <keyword id="10310481" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="southwest-bay">southwest Bay</keyword> of Bengal about 240 km east-southeast of Cuddalore, about 250 km east southeast of Puducherry and 300 km south southeast of Chennai. "It is very likely to intensify further into a very severe cyclonic storm during next six hours," the IMD release said around 11.30 a.m. Fairly widespread rainfall and thunderstorm activity is very likely over coastal and north interior Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema during Wednesday and Thursday, and southeast Telangana during Thursday. Extremely isolated heavy rainfall activity is also very likely over coastal and north interior Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Wednesday. Tidal wave of about 1-1.5m height above the astronomical tide is very likely to inundate the low-lying areas of north coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry near the place of landfall. Damage expected over Nagapattinam, Myladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal and Puducherry. Potential threat from flying objects. The cyclone will lead to disruption of railways, overhead powerlines and signalling systems. There are expectations of widespread damage to standing crops, plantations and orchards. "Small boats, country crafts may get detached from moorings. Visibility may be severely affected," warns IMD, suggesting "total suspension of fishing operations and mobilise evacuation from coastal areas." It was advised to move coastal hutment dwellers to safer places. The IMD advised people in affected areas to remain in safe places and indoors, warning that movement in motor boats and small ships is unsafe. In view of the current Covid-19 scenario, the MHA said that the NDRF teams are equipped with appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). "NDRF is working in close coordination with district and local administrations. Awareness programmes are being conducted for all citizens in the form of information about cyclones, 'Dos and Don'ts' and information about Covid-19 in affected areas and prevention measures." According to a Met Department official, the depression, situated about 15 km west by northwest of Andhra's Kakinada and 200 km east by southeast of Telangana's Khammam further moved west by northwestwards at a speed of 32 km per hour in the past six hours. Around 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, it lay centred over north interior Karnataka and adjoining areas of Maharashtra and Telangana, about 80 km northwest of Karnataka's Gulbarga and 160 km east of Maharashtra's Solapur. "It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and gradually weaken into a well-marked low pressure area during the next 12 hours. Thereafter, it is very likely to continue to move west-northwestwards and emerge into east central Arabian Sea, off Maharashtra coast around Friday morning," said the Met official. The Met Department has also held out a possibility of the depression further intensifying over east central and adjoining northeast Arabian Sea, off Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts with a gradual west by northwestward movement. The depression, which arose in the Bay of Bengal, first hit Andhra Pradesh and then moved to Telangana to wreak havoc in Hyderabad and surrounding areas. Coastal Andhra Pradesh could see isolated thunderstorms over next 5 days

NEW DELHI: <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> and <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> are engaged in intense negotiations to hammer out an understanding over the creation of <keyword id="68884" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Telangana">Telangana</keyword>. 
 BJP has assured the government that it would not waver from its commitment to the creation of Telangana but is insisting on a specific pledge of financial support for Seemandhra region as the condition for supporting the <keyword id="37102" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword> Reorganization Bill, expected to be introduced in Parliament on Wednesday. The Union home ministry on Sunday sent a recommendation to President Pranab Mukherjee for introduction of the Telangana bill in Parliament. 
 
Sources said BJP is demanding a commitment for extending financial assistance worth Rs 17,000 odd crore to Seemandhra region through the Consolidated Fund of India to meet the revenue gap it will be saddled with, based on projections for the previous and current fiscal years, because of the transfer of resource-rich Hyderabad to Telangana as the capital of the proposed state. 
 
The party also wants the government to ask the Finance Commission to find ways of helping Seemandhra region with adequate funds on a long-term basis as a compensation for Hyderabad which generated Rs 24,000 crore in revenue. 
 
It also wants specific commitments in the coming fiscal year for projects that the two sides feel should be created in Seemandhra region for its development. 
 Congress sources confirmed that there have been several rounds of talks between party representatives including Union ministers from Andhra Pradesh and BJP <keyword id="19496" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="leader">leader</keyword> and former party president M Venkaiah Naidu. 
 
When contacted, Naidu confirmed that he had been talking to Congress representatives and that he had made it plain that BJP will support the AP Reorganization Bill if the government commits itself to take measures for the development of Seemandhra region. 
 
"BJP in principle favours the creation of Telangana. That has been our consistent stand. But at the same time, we want to ensure that the interests of Seemandhra region are also safeguarded. There is no conflict of interest between the people of the two regions. They are all Indians and they are all Telugus,” Naidu said. 
 
He claimed that while the Centre and the Congress agreed about the need to take special steps in Seemandhra region, they were reluctant to back up their statements of intent with commitments of financial support. "They are not ready to make a commitment for the provision of assistance to Seemandhra through the Consolidated Fund of India to help it bridge the revenue gap. They want to leave the matter to the Finance Commission which is not acceptable to us,” Naidu said. 
 
Naidu also demanded commitment of support for projects the two sides have agreed on like upgrade of existing airports at Vizag, Vijaywada and Tirupati to international standards, creation of an industrial corridor between Vizag and Chennai along the lines of the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor and setting up of branches of central institutions located in Hyderabad such as DRDO, IIM and others. 
 
"I told them empty gestures of hand will not do. Put money on the table,” the BJP leader said. 
 Both sides said that while sticking points remained, they were in agreement on provisions of <keyword id="250148" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="The-Bill">the bill</keyword> such as declaring Rayalaseema region as backward and providing special incentives including tax holidays and exemption from central exercise for industry, creation of reservoirs in Seemandhra as part of the Polavaram project on Godavari, swift completion of six irrigation projects -- four in Rayalaseema and two in Telangana -- linked to Krishna river and a provision in the bill that education and employment opportunities in Hyderabad will remain open to people from both regions until Seemandhra gets its own capital. 
 
Naidu has also demanded creation of power plants of 4,000 mega watts capacity in the Telangana region. 
 
On the inclusion of Anantapur and Kurnool districts from Rayalaseema in Telangana, BJP is learnt to have said that it can be considered if the two regions agree.
