Keeping in mind Indian government’s ‘<keyword id="6354869" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="make-in-India">Make in India</keyword>’ initiative, <keyword id="3148562" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Optiemus-Infracom-Limited">Optiemus Infracom Limited</keyword> and <keyword id="3148447" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wistron-Corporation">Wistron Corporation</keyword> have announced a joint venture agreement to set up manufacturing facilities for telecom products in India. While Optiemus Infracom Limited is a leading Indian telecom enterprise, Wistron Corporation is a Global Fortune 500 company and Taiwan’s leading <keyword id="1945116" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Original-design-manufacturer">original design manufacturer</keyword> (ODM). The announcement was done in the presence of Mr Amitabh Kant, IAS Secretary - DIPP, Government of India. 
 
As per information, a strategic investment worth approximately US$ 200million would be done in world-class infrastructure, technologies and processes over the next five years. This would be done to cater to the growing Indian and global demands of telecom products like smart phones, tablets and smart devices. 
 
The joint venture also aims to create over 15,000 employment opportunities in India in the next 5 years and provide a complete end to end solution to global and Indian brands encompassing world-class manufacturing infrastructure, distribution, retail and after sales.

By 2017, India is expected to overtake USA to be the second largest smartphone market globally, as per research firm IDC. The market is expected to continue to grow in double-digits over the next few years as more and more people switch to smartphones and gradually upgrade to 4G-enabled phones.

Optiemus and Wistron join hands to invest $200mn to set up telecom manufacturing facilities in India

<keyword id="127875" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vineet-Taneja">Vineet Taneja</keyword>, <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> India head for mobile phones and digital imaging, has resigned, according to industry sources. This marks the departure of one of the top two Indian executives at the South Korean firm in India. The other high level Indian executive in the company is <keyword id="210829" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ravinder-Zutshi">Ravinder Zutshi</keyword> who is the deputy managing director of Samsung India. 
 
Talks about Taneja’s exit were doing the rounds over the past two months. However, he has not made up his mind regarding the next job, as per sources. 
 
Although Taneja could not be immediately reached for comments on his quitting, a Samsung India spokesperson said, "Samsung does not comment on rumour or speculation." 
 While Samsung has maintained its market share in the mobile phone business, the Indian arm has been facing pressure lately for losing some momentum. For instance, sales of its <keyword id="1896085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Galaxy-S5">Galaxy S5</keyword> and <keyword id="1593765" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Galaxy-S4">Galaxy S4</keyword> models have been below the company's expectations. 
 
This was one of the reasons behind Taneja's exit, according to a senior trade partner of Samsung India. "There's huge pressure on Vineet to continue with 30-40% growth rate despite the market growth rate slowing down," the trade partner said. 
 
Taneja was also unhappy with the changes in the management of Samsung India, which saw him report to SK Kim, managing director (sales). Earlier, he directly reported to BD Park, managing director of Samsung India. 
 
According to CyberMedia Research, Samsung led the Indian smartphone market with 38.9% share in the January-March quarter, followed by Micromax at 19.1%, Karbonn at 6.9%, Lava at 6.1% and Nokia at 5.3%. 
 
Taneja had earlier left Bharti Airtel where he worked as the operations director for South India and Sri Lanka. He is a graduate from IIT Roorkee and did his MBA from IIM Calcutta.

The <keyword id="3315394" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="demonetisation">demonetisation</keyword> of currency has made the entire nation undergo a cash crunch and this has affected the market in a very bad way. Along with many markets, smartphone market is also facing the problems regarding sales. Inventories are piled up with devices and people don’t have enough new banknotes for purchase and this may force the mobile handset makers to alter production schedules and defer new launches. 
 
According to reports, the situation has turned worse since the demonetisation announcement on November 8 and it may also affect shipment numbers for mobile makers in October-December quarter. 
 
"Dealers have been sitting idle, some shops are also closed, because consumers are not coming to buy phones and sellers are not accepting old currency notes.There's an inventory pile-up happening and this dry spell will continue till November 25, till the time cash is easily accessible to consumers," Ravinder Zutshi, mobile council head at Consumer Electronics and Appliances Manufacturers Association (CEAMA) told ET. 
 
According to a report by ET, smartphone sales are down by about 70-80% from pre-demonetisation days and this have led to a serious pile up in inventories as smartphones are generally bought with cash. 
 
"There are no customers. Our existing stock isn't selling, so where is the question of ordering more stock," Rajesh Chauhan, owner of a small brick-and mortar shop, told ET. 
 
Consumers have put large appliances and smaller electronic items such as phones lower down on their priority lists after the government banned use of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes from last Wednesday. 
 Handset makers such as <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword>, <keyword id="6355189" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="lava">Lava</keyword> and <keyword id="1188106" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gionee">Gionee</keyword>, television and white goods makers are all watching the situation closely , amid the inventory pile-up, but are yet to take a call on modifying their production schedules. 
 
The inventory pile-up for TV and white goods industry is still insignificant as of now since the industry anyway adjusts its production after Diwali when sales as a routine take a dip, added industry insiders.

Demonetisation is delaying new smartphone launches. Here’s how

As compared to last year, the sales of smartphones increased, by both value and volume, this festive season. The sales went up on huge demand for smartphones in Rs 20,000-category. The smartphone sales increased by minimum 40%. 
 
The upbeat sales has set a trend for the quarter ending December, which typically makes up for nearly a fourth to a fifth of annual revenue for the industry. This is a relief after a tepid first half this year. 
 “Compared to last year's <keyword id="188" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Diwali">Diwali</keyword>, we saw an increase of 40 per cent in actual sales by volume, as per consumer activations, for <keyword id="71696" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax">Micromax</keyword> smartphones, and if we include Yu, sales were up 60 per cent,” <keyword id="400990" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Micromax-Informatics">Micromax Informatics</keyword> chief marketing officer Subhajit Sen told ET. 
 People with knowledge in this sector said that <keyword id="10591" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword>’s mobile phone sales saw an increment of about 40%by value and consumer electronic’s sales had a risen sale of about 30%. <keyword id="6366627" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Intex">Intex</keyword> and <keyword id="145729" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karbonn">Karbonn</keyword> also had an higher sales by 14 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively, while players such as <keyword id="6367990" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panasonic">Panasonic</keyword>, <keyword id="874458" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Xiaomi">Xiaomi</keyword> and LeEco, which have comparatively smaller bases, saw their sales more than double this Diwali against last year. 
 
The rise seen in sales during this season is said to be because of pent-up consumer demand coupled with a number of model launches by top tier as well as new entrant Chinese brands. Enabling 4G phones to allow Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and higher purchasing power due to good monsoon this year, acted as key catalysts. 
 
"This resulted in a 125 per cent growth in smartphone sales during Diwali compared to FY15-16,” Ravinder Zutshi, chairman of the mobile and communications council at CEAMA, the consumer electronics manufacturing association, told ET. 
 
There was an increase seen in the sales of phones in the range the Rs 8,000-20,000 and increased number of people entered the Rs 10,000-12,000,Rs 17,000-18,000 and the Rs 15,000 price points. 
 
"So, consumers in the sub-Rs 10,000 price segments ended up spending more and moving to one of these price bands, thus expanding share of the mid-segment. This was not the case last year,” a chief executive at one of the leading retail chains in India told ET. 
 
The strong demand during the festive season this year brings some relief to an industry which has seen smartphone sales losing pace in the first half of the year as fewer consumers switched from featurephones to smartphones, forcing analysts to lower their smartphone sales expectations in 2016 by as much as 17 per cent.
