The election dates are out and poll bugle has been sounded. The <keyword id="40807" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Election-Commission">Election Commission</keyword> announced poll schedule for five states and elections in Uttar Pradesh will be held across seven phases. All the parties such as <keyword id="6354265" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="samajwadi-party">Samajwadi Party</keyword>, Bahujan <keyword id="164879" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samaj-Party">Samaj Party</keyword>, the Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress have been holding massive rallies to woo voters. 
 As the poll dates were announced, several experts projected heavy victory for the BJP in UP. The poll conducted by India Today from October to December has projected that the BJP will win assembly elections in crucial states, banking on Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>'s demonetisation. 
 
Demonetisation was announced in mid of the survey period. 
 
According to the survey, BJP's vote share increased from 31% in October to 33% in December. In terms of seats, it highlights that 206-216 seats for the party in the 403-member UP assembly. 
 
It also highlighted that Samajwadi Party is likely to emerge as the second largest party with a vote share of 26%. 
 
Bahujan Samaj Party is neck-and-neck with SP in terms of vote share, and is projected to win 79-85 seats. This shows that despite repeated reminders of Mayawati asking Muslim voters to shun SP, it has had little impact as the community remains loyal to the SP even as party remains a divided house. 
 
According to the report, Congress continues to struggle in the state as party is projected to win barely 5-9 seats with only 6%vote share in the state. 
 
The other parties in the state - Rashtriya Lok Dal, Apna Dal, the Left and others - might win 7-11 seats.

Even Poonam Sinha, Samajwadi Party (SP)’s Bollywood candidate, is trailing far behind her contender, BJP’s Rajnath Singh in Lucknow. BJP contestants largely beat exit poll predictions Contesting the Lok Sabha Election from Amethi, a Congress stronghold, Irani seems to be leading over the incumbent Rahul Gandhi by a margin of 10,000 votes according to data from the Election Commission in contrast to the exit poll that predicted a Gandhi victory. During the 2014 election, Gandhi did manage to beat out Irani but she dented his vote share by at least 12%. BJP’s ‘dream girl’ candidate, Hema Malini, flipped from trailing during the initial vote count to commanding a strong lead of 62.2%. Her primary contender, Kunwar Narendra Singh from the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) was left in the dust with 33.3% vote share. Jaya Prada, on the other hand, looks unlikely to bring a victory home for the BJP as she trails behind Samajwadi Party (SP)’s Azam Khan in Rampur with a difference larger than 100,000 votes between them.

India’s ongoing elections is a battle for dominance inside the Parliament. The incumbent government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is seen as the strongest outfit, even after five years in power. The party is projecting Prime Minister Narendra Modi as an invincible candidate with solutions for the millions of problems that plague India’s economy and society, much like Thanos. On the other hand, unlike the two-party structure in the US, there is a motley crew of political parties with equally big egos but very diverse ideologies, and varying degrees of charisma. However, individual prospects of success, if they were to take on Modi by themselves, can be called uncertain at best. Therefore, there is a clamour for a grand anti-Modi coalition-- in India they call it ‘<keyword id="2838249" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahagathbandhan">Mahagathbandhan</keyword>’-- much like the Avengers. What is missing is the equivalent of a S.H.I.E.L.D that can put together an optimal team. Yet, efforts towards forming a coalition are constantly underway. Some analysis [hyperlink] suggest that it will remain a strong possibility even after the elections. In academic terms, the phenomenon is called ‘index of opposition unity’. In all the Parliamentary elections since 2002, 45% of the seats have been won due to low ‘index of opposition unity’, according to data analysed by veteran psephologists Prannoy Roy and Dorab Sopariwala in their recent book ‘The Verdict’. In other words, the winning party converted low votes into a seat because the rival parties were fragmented. However, it is easier said than done for parties to forge friendships given their troubled past with each other. Most parties have been part of different alliances, led either by BJP or the Congress, at some point or the other. The ideologies have been far more malleable than their egos. The contenders

 There are 12 regional and local parties from 10 states that have come together for now. Leading the coalition from the front is the Bahujan Samajwadi Party and Samajwadi party in Uttar Pradesh. The political landscape changed in the western parts of Uttar Pradesh when <keyword id="6388951" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rashtriya-Lok-Dal">Rashtriya Lok Dal</keyword> joined hands [hyperlink] with Samajwadi Party-Bahujan Samaj Party to gear up against the rise of BJP in Uttar Pradesh. The RLD is a former ally of the <keyword id="190679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-National-Congress">Indian National Congress</keyword>, the only other national outfit after BJP. Congress itself is not part of this alliance, at least not yet. The Congress itself has stitched together a different clique comprising of other regional satraps like the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) from Tamil Nadu, the <keyword id="54794" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nationalist-Congress-Party">Nationalist Congress Party</keyword> (NCP) in Maharashtra, and the <keyword id="123786" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rashtriya-Janata-Dal">Rashtriya Janata Dal</keyword> (RJD) in Bihar, among others. While some of the communist outfits are in the Congress clique, the biggest of all the red parties, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), CPI(M) as it’s popularly known, is still largely fighting on its own in different parts of the country. As it stands, CPI(M) cannot form a government on its own, it has to offer its support to one coalition or the other. The party’s state unit in Punjab has already offered its support to the Mahagathbandhan in Uttar Pradesh. The fight between Modi’s challengers is to decide who shall lead the pack and who shall become the Prime Minister. So while the different packs are non-committal to a common cause right now, a post-poll consensus is still very likely after some of the egos are cut to size by the election results. But Modi is not Thanos However much the BJP would like Modi to be all-powerful and invincible like Thanos, he isn’t. Even in the thumping victory of 2014, the BJP and allies, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had just 31% of the country’s votes. The parties backing Modi, too, have mostly been fair-weather friends at best. The Janata Dal (United) led by <keyword id="6358190" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nitish-Kumar">Nitish Kumar</keyword> in Bihar has been in and out of the NDA at will in the past. Bickering is a constant feature between the BJP and the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, an alliance that has survived 25 years with breaks in between. While the two parties are fighting together this election, the Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray recently called Modi ‘a thief’ just days before sealing the deal with the BJP. Realpolitik, the German word for politics that is more practical than ideological, comes alive every five years, around the Lok Sabha election, in India. As in The Avengers Endgame, the challengers will have to sacrifice ego and embrace realpolitik to stay relevant.

The BJP crossed the halfway mark in Rajasthan with its candidates leading in over 100 seats while the Congress was ahead in 77, according to Election Commission trends available on Sunday for the assembly polls in Rajasthan. The Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP) is leading on five seats while the CPI (M) and BSP on two each. The Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) were leading on one seat each. Independent candidates are leading in nine constituencies. Chief Minister <keyword id="49103" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ashok-gehlot" source="Orion">Ashok Gehlot</keyword>, ministers Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, Tikaram Jully, Shakuntala Rawat, Brijendra Ola, Vishvendra Singh, Mahendra Jeet Singh Malvia are among the Congress candidates who are leading whereas parliamentary affairs minister Shanti Dhariwal and assembly speaker CP Joshi are trailing. Congress candidate Sachin Pilot is leading on Tonk seat with a margin of 943 votes while BJP leader and former chief minister <keyword id="6361795" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vasundhara-raje" source="Orion">Vasundhara Raje</keyword> is leading in Jhalrapatan assembly seat with 7,025 votes. BJP rebels Yoonus Khan (Deedwana), Chandrabhan Singh Aakya (Chittorgarh), Ravindra Singh Bhati (Sheo) are among the nine independent candidates who are leading in initial trends. As the trends poured in, BJP candidate from Kota north Prahlad Gunjal said that the BJP is going to form the government. "Rajasthan has given the mandate and the picture will become clear in sometime," he said. When asked who will be the CM, he said, "This will be decided by the party high command. We have big leaders like Vasundhara Raje and we need not bring from outside." Gunjal is contesting against parliamentary affairs minister Shanti Dhariwal. Elated over the initial trends, Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said people have voted to oust Congress from the government. "People have failed the guarantees of Congress. They have voted to throw corrupt Congress out," Shekhawat told reporters here. He said that the BJP will be forming the state government with a huge mandate. Polling in 199 out of 200 assembly constituencies was held on November 25. The election in Sriganganagar's Karanpur seat was postponed due to the death of Congress candidate Gurmeet Singh Koonar. Counting of votes polled in the November 25 assembly elections in Rajasthan got underway at 8 am amid tight security arrangements. A total of 36 counting centres have been set up 199 of the state's 200 assembly constituencies which went to poll. Election to the Sriganganagar's Karanpur seat was postponed due to the death of Congress candidate Gurmeet Singh Koonar. As many as 1,862 candidates are in the fray for 199 seats. While 30 election districts have one counting centre, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Nagaur have two centres each. "All District Election Officers, Police Commissioners and Superintendents of Police have been instructed to strictly follow the security protocol at the counting centre," CEO Gupta said. He said that three-tier security arrangements have been ensured at the counting venue and only those with authorised passes would be able to enter. "Separate counting halls have been made for each assembly seat at the counting centre, where as per the instructions of the Commission, tables have been arranged for counting of postal ballots and EVMs," he said. Incumbent Congress and its rival Congress conducted intense poll campaign and are both hopeful of forming a government. While most of pollsters predicted an edge for the BJP, three exit polls in their upper limit forecast a Congress win in the desert state.

Rajasthan assembly polls: BJP surges ahead of Congress to take lead

The high-voltage election campaigns, which saw political leaders trying to score brownie points against each other, finally came to an end, the voting was done and we are now waiting for the results with bated breath. Of course, all of us are familiar with the lotus symbol and the hand – the first represents the Bharatiya Janata Party (<keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword>) and the second is the symbol of the Indian National <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword>. While the lotus signifies knowledge (as lotus is associated with Saraswati, the goddess of learning), the hand has raised too many slogans such as Congress ka hath, aam aadmi ke sath. 
 
On the other hand, there are loads of political parties out there with funny names and humorous symbols, but not too many of us know much about them. So let us have a look at them this time around and enjoy politics the funny side up. 
 Last year, the Aam Aadmi Party was allotted the broom as its symbol and according to the party, “it suits the purpose for which they have entered politics – cleaning the filth, which has permeated into the government and the legislature.” Party leader <keyword id="6354681" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Manish-Sisodia">Manish Sisodia</keyword> said, “There were 10 options that we had given, including a candle, a water tap and a gas cylinder, among others. But the broom was always our first choice.” 
 
Since then, broom has been the ubiquitous prop at every party rally or demonstration, and has given rise to slogans like lagegi jhaadu udegi dhool, na rahega panja na rahega phool, jhaadu chalao beiman bhagao and maaro mohariya taan ke, jhaadu ke nishaan pe. However, the real ‘áam’ party is Tamil Nadu-based Pattali Makkal Katchi, whose election symbol is mango. 
 
In Bihar, Rashtriya Janata Dal, a party led by one of the most humorous politicians, Lalu Prasad, has the lantern as its symbol, depicting the pitiable power situation in the rural areas. On the other hand, Mizoram People’s Conference has a more progressive symbol – it has opted for the electric bulb. 
 
Shibu Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s symbol is bow-and-arrow while in neighbouring Bihar, the arrow (without the bow) is the symbol of JD (U). We do fervently hope that these parties do not intend to take us back into history when these weapons were very much in use. Interestingly, comb is the symbol of Babulal Marandi’s Jharkhand Vikas Morcha. One wonders what this symbol signifies, but it might end up alienating bald voters as comb is an object of envy for them. 
 
But things are even more incongruous at times. For instance, all political parties try to project themselves as pro-poor, but the Lok Janshakti Party is happy to have a bungalow as the party’s symbol. In the South, DMK’s symbol is the Sun. Perhaps that is the reason why its chief M Karunanidhi is always seen with the sunglasses on! 
 Some other interesting election symbols include batsman (Gondwana Mukti Sena), spectacles (Indian National Lok Dal), inkpot and pen (J&amp;K People’s Democratic Party), drum (United Democratic Party), conch (Biju Janata Dal) and hand pump (<keyword id="6388951" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rashtriya-Lok-Dal">Rashtriya Lok Dal</keyword>). However, the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal has the ultimate symbol – it is a chair, the primary objective for which all parties have been formed and for which they fight elections.

The party also promised to break all their promises and nominated a professional clown as its candidate.
