Gartner thinks Global shipments of devices, including PCs, tablets and mobile phones, are expected to grow 3.9% to 2.5 billion units this year, states a PTI report. 
 
According to the American IT Research &amp; Consulting firm, the number of devices shipped worldwide is expected to surge to 2.5 billion in this year and further to 2.57 billion in 2016 as compared to 2.37 billion in 2014. 
 The <keyword id="745857" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gartner-study">Gartner study</keyword> also predicts a rise in tablet market. It cites that the tablet sales across the globe will register 8% growth; to reach 233 million units in 2015 as against 214 million units in 2014. 
 A PTI report quoted <keyword id="672489" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ranjit-Atwal">Ranjit Atwal</keyword>, Gartner research director, saying: "The collapse of the tablet market in 2014 was alarming. In the last two years, global sales of tablets were growing in double-digits.” 
 
In 2015, the mobile phone segment is expected to surge by 3.7% in order to reach 1.9 billion this year from 1.83 billion last year. 
 
"The smartphone market is becoming polarised between the high- and low-end market price points. On one hand, the premium phone with an average selling price at $447 in 2014 saw growth dominated by iOS, and on the other end of the spectrum you have Android and other open OS phones' growth area in the basic phone segment, where the average phone costs $100," said Gartner Research Director Annette Zimmermann. 
 The research firm also estimated that the <keyword id="28355" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PC-market">PC market</keyword> (desktops and notebooks) will grow about 1% in 2015.

What used to be a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/complete-visual-history-of-cell-phones-2011-5#1996-15">'90s-style cellphone</a> with a small screen and keypad is now a sleek device with glass that bends in half. And the refresh seems to be taking the smartphone world by storm.<div type="image" title="A 1990s Motorola flip phone next to a Galaxy foldable phone." height="1080" width="1440" msid="98707111" hostid="261" sizebytes="69354"></div>The foldable-phone category is the fastest-growing on the market, according to data <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/foldable-smartphone-shipments-2022/">Counterpoint</a> published in August.Samsung is leading the trend, accounting in June for 62% of the global foldable-smartphone market, followed by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/huawei-mate-x-folding-phone-first-look-2019-2">Huawei</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/first-look-oppo-find-x-pop-out-camera-2019-2">Oppo</a>, according to the data. Counterpoint <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/global-foldable-market-expected-grow-52-yoy-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">estimated</a> in December that foldable-phone shipments would hit more than 22 million units this year — a 52% increase year on year.Advertisements of the latest flip phones regularly flash up on television, flood the billboards in public places, and appear in pop-up stores in malls for passersby to play with. But what do Gen Zers think about the devices?<h2>Flip phones aren't cheap</h2><div type="image" title="Oppo pop-up stores in malls in the UK and China." height="1080" width="1440" msid="98707115" hostid="261" sizebytes="108110"></div>Kelly McKeon, a 24-year-old from New York, told Insider she had an old-style flip phone when she was in middle school but now used an iPhone. When the latest foldable phones launched, McKeon said she thought the screen folding in half seemed like a "supercool tech" feature. That's why there's a big drive for advertising them, he added.Counterpoint's <a href="https://www.counterpointresearch.com/global-foldable-market-expected-grow-52-yoy-2023/">research</a> predicted foldable-phone prices would drop this year because of increasing competition in the market.A spokesperson for Huawei said it didn't have access to market research around Gen Z's uptake of the company's foldable phones. They referred Insider to a <a href="https://www.gizchina.com/2023/03/13/huawei-foldable-mobile-phones-remain-no-1-for-three-consecutive-years/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">GizChina</a> report that cited data from iResearch Consulting, which said Huawei was the biggest foldable-phone seller in China.Samsung and Oppo didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.<h2>'Just a smartphone'</h2><div type="image" title="Samsung Galaxy Z Flip" height="1080" width="1440" msid="98707117" hostid="261" sizebytes="20690"></div>Stephanie Elliot, 23, told Insider she switched from a Samsung Galaxy S8+ to a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 about four years ago. The foldable phone fits nicely in her pocket, and she likes that the screen is protected."The flip was the only appeal of this phone," Elliot said, adding: "It's just a smartphone."Elliot said "<a href="https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/what-is-the-flex-mode-of-galaxy-z-flip4-and-galaxy-z-fold4/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">flex mode</a>" — the ability to split apps on two different screens — was "far less useful" than expected.According to screenshots she sent to Insider, WhatsApp video calls and YouTube videos take up only the top screen, which she called an "inefficient use of space." Elliot said flex mode worked well while using the camera but was "not suitable for most apps" because her phone's "tall and skinny."<h2>Foldable phones are late to the party</h2>They've been around for nearly 30 years, but flip phones have "missed the boat" in the mass market, Atwal said.Earlier in the COVID-19 pandemic, young people changed the way they bought phones, he said. Instead of reaching the end of a phone contract and ordering another one, they kept hold of their phones because they'd realized they had all the software they needed.This, and the fact that foldable phones are pricey, has presented an issue for their manufacturers, Atwal said. The companies are trying to "push something new in a market in which people are reluctant to hold on," he added.McKeon, the Gen Zer from New York, said despite her disinterest in foldable phones, "it is fun to think about ending a tense phone call by slamming the phone closed."

Flip phones had a glow-up, but Gen Zers say they're not catching the vibe

London, May 26 (IANS) Due to impacts of Covid-19, shipments of total mobile phones are forecast to decline 14.6 per cent in 2020, while smartphone shipments will achieve a slightly slower decline of 13.7 per cent year over year to total 1.3 billion units this year, according to a Gartner forecast on Tuesday. "While users have increased the use of their mobile phones to communicate with colleagues, work partners, friends and families during lockdowns, reduced disposable income will result in fewer consumers upgrading their phones," Ranjit Atwal, Senior Research Director at Gartner, said in a statement. "As a result, phone lifetimes will extend from 2.5 years in 2018 to 2.7 years in 2020," said Atwal. In 2020, affordable 5G phones were expected to be the catalyst to increase phone replacements, but now it is unlikely to be the case. 5G phones are now forecast to represent only 11 per cent of total mobile phone shipments in 2020. "The delayed delivery of some 5G flagship phones is an ongoing issue," said Annette Zimmermann, Research Vice President at Gartner. "Moreover, the lack of 5G geographical coverage along with the increasing cost of the 5G phone contract will impact the choice of a 5G phone." Overall, spending on 5G phones will be impacted in most regions apart from China, where continued investment in 5G infrastructure is expected, allowing providers in China to effectively market 5G phones. The combined global shipments PCs, tablets and mobile phones are on pace to decline 13.6 per cent in 2020, according to the forecast. PC shipments are expected to decline 10.5 per cent this year. Shipments of notebooks, tablets and Chromebooks are forecast to decline slower than the PC market overall in 2020. "The forecasted decline in the PC market in particular could have been much worse," said Atwal. "However, government lockdowns due to COVID-19 forced businesses and schools to enable millions of people to work from home and increase spending on new notebooks, Chromebooks and tablets for those workers. Education and government establishments also increased spending on those devices to facilitate e-learning." Gartner said that 48 per cent of employees will likely work remotely at least part of the time after the COVID-19 pandemic, compared to 30 per cent pre-pandemic. Overall, the work from home trend will make IT departments shift to more notebooks, tablets and Chrome devices for work. "This trend combined with businesses required to create flexible business continuity plans will make business notebooks displace deskbased PCs through 2021 and 2022," said Atwal. --IANS gb/na

The Mac Pro, which Apple launched on December 10 after announcing it in June, is a computing powerhouse designed for professionals and businesses that regularly manage very heavy workflows. That could include tasks involving large-scale data processing, app and video game development, networking infrastructure, film editing, and music production.The Mac Pro runs on an Intel Xeon W processor, the line of Intel chips optimized for tasks like 3D rendering, the development of artificial intelligence programs, and running complex 3D CAD software. The $6,000 base model comes with an 8-core processor, 32GB of memory, and Radeon Pro 580X graphics with 8GB of memory and 256GB of storage space.But the high-end model that will run you more than $50,000 comes with a beefy 28-core processor, 1.5TB of memory, two Radeon Pro Vega II Duo GPUs, and 4TB of storage. You can also add Apple's Afterburner card, which is an accelerator card that can enable playback of three streams of RAW 8K video simultaneously, for an extra $2,000, and wheels for $400.Atwal sees the Mac Pro, especially the high-end configurations that cost tens of thousands of dollars, as being more of an infrastructure solution than a traditional computer. "That's what you would expect to get for those kinds of price points," Atwal said. "It's almost a portable data center."The Mac Pro could also be well-suited for those interested in best-in-class gaming, says Jeff Fieldhack, research director at Counterpoint Research. On 13 seats in Punjab, INC won eight seats, BJP won four seats and Aam Aadmi Party has the one seat to its name. The former actor, Sunny Deol, who joined BJP earlier this month, brought home Gurdaspur for the saffron party. They've also won in Bathinda, Hoshiarpur, and Firozpur. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shriromani Akali Dali (SDA) was counting on the anti-incumbency wave against the state’s Chief Minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, to win over Punjab. They even brought in Sunny Deol to keep the Gurdaspur constituency from falling into Congress’ hands. Their efforts weren’t nearly enough. Even in 2014, the NDA only led by a very thin margin of five seats — four seats went to AAP and three to the UPA. Punjab has 13 Lok Sabha seats in total. For 2019 Lok Sabha elections, all the seats went for polling together during the seventh and the last phase of elections in the country on May 19, 2019. Over the past few general elections, the BJP has been performing poorly in this state either with no seats or with very few seats to take for the parliament. In 2014 elections, the party did not secure even a single seat from here. In 2009 general elections, the party got just one constituency and in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, BJP got just 3 places from Punjab. In the Amritsar constituency, Hardeep Puri of Congress is fighting the Lok Sabha elections 2019 with AAP’s Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal and Hardeep Singh Puri of BJP. From Jalandhar seat, Santokh Singh Chaudhary of Congress has locked horns with AAP's is Jora Singh and SAD’s Charanjit Singh Atwal. SAD is an ally of the BJP. In the Patiala constituency, Preneet Kaur of Congress has contested with Nina Mittal of AAP and Surjit Singh Rakhra of SAD. The choice of candidates by the Congress party in the key constituencies can pose a bigger challenge for AAP and BJP in Punjab.

Worldwide shipments of PCs, tablets and smartphones are expected to exceed 2.3 billion units in 2017, a decline of 0.3% from 2016, according to research and advisory company Gartner Inc. 
According to Gartner, the market is forecast to return to growth in 2018 with a 1.6% increase in shipments. 
 
The overall shipment growth of the device market was steady for the first time in many years, Gartner research director Ranjit Atwal said, "PC shipments are slightly lower while smartphone shipments are slightly higher — leading to a slight downward revision in shipments from the previous forecast," he said. 
 
Gartner also added that while PC shipments are going to drop 3% in 2017, the rate of decline is slower than in recent years, alleviated by Windows 10 replacement purchasing. 
The impact of component pricing on PCs is being reduced for buyers as producers absorb some of the cost into their margins — fearing the alternative of a reduction of their share of a competitive market, it said. 
 
Atwal said PC buyers continue to put quality and functionality ahead of price. "Many organisations are coming to the end of their evaluation periods for Windows 10, and are now increasing the speed at which they adopt new PCs as they see the clear benefits of better security and newer hardware," he said. 
 
Meanwhile, Gartner said overall smartphone shipments will grow 5% in 2017, reaching nearly 1.6 billion units. It also said that consumers are now moving towards higher priced and “premium phones” from basic and low-cost phones.

In 2019, for example, it was announced that Samsung smart TVs would support Apple's iTunes platform and its AirPlay 2 streaming technology.Apple also <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-google-ad-ces-2019-privacy-imessage-2019-1">placed a billboard</a> prominently on the Las Vegas strip where CES takes place advertising the iPhone's privacy capabilities. "It's clear that vendors can no longer market their products with the mind of only targeting the mature and emerging markets," said Ranjit Atwal, a research director at Gartner."Driven by economic variations the market is splitting into four categories," he said. "Economically challenged mature markets, economically stable mature markets and the same for emerging markets." Atwal went on to give examples of each type of market: Russia and Brazil will become economically challenged emerging markets, India will stay stable, and Japan will become an economically challenged mature market. Beyond these trends, Gartner expects these things to happen: <ul><li>Traditional PCs, which includes desktops and notebooks, will see sales fall from 246 million in 2015 to 219 million in 2018.</li><li>Both premium and basic ultramobile devices will grow, reaching 290 million units in 2018, up from 241 million in 2015. </li><li>Mobile phones will grow from 1.9 billion in 2015 to over two billion in 2018. </li></ul>The smartphone market, which is currently becoming saturated, will also experience a change."We are witnessing a shift to basic phones in the smartphone market," said Roberta Cozza, an analyst for Gartner. "Users are also opting to replace within the basic smartphone category without necessarily moving to high-end smartphones, especially in China." Gartner also predicts that Windows 10, Microsoft's new operating system, will become a hit with businesses. This, in turn, will drive growth for the operating system. "We expect that business will deploy Windows 10 in businesses faster than with previous Windows upgrades," said Ranjit Atwal. Research, conducted by Gartner, found that over 80% of businesses have tested Windows 10 since its launch. "By the end of 2017, many business are looking to move as much as 40 per cent of their installed base onto new Windows 10 devices, mainly driven by the appeal hybrid touch-screen 2-1," said Atwal. Gartner: More devices will be sold in 2016 than ever - but rifts are appearing

But all good things must come to an end: In April 2016, amid a year-on-year 16% decline in quarterly iPhone sales, <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/apr/26/apple-iphone-first-revenue-decline-13-years">its revenues dropped</a>.Meanwhile, Google's Android - built and distributed by third-party companies like Samsung and LG - is strengthening its grip on the market.<ul><li>In the EU 5 (Britain, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain), its marketshare jumped 7.1 percentage points the first quarter of 2016, up to 75.6%.</li><li>In the US, its jump was even larger - up 7.3% points to 65.5%.</li><li>Meanwhile, Android in Urban China was up 6% points to 77%.</li></ul>This growth comes at least partially at the expense of Apple's iOS. In the EU, iOS dropped from 20.2% to 18.9% in the same quarter. The drop in urban China is particularly pronounced - Apple's marketshare is 21.1%, down 26.1% a year prior.This eating into one-anothers' market share is of increasing importance - and concern - to the major smartphone players. For years there has been reliable, record-breaking growth in the industry. But this is&#xa0;coming to an end, as markets become saturated and upgrade cycles slow."The double-digit growth era for the global smartphone market has come to an end," <a href="http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/3270418">Gartner research director Ranjit Atwal said at the end of March</a>. "Historically, worsening economic conditions had negligible impact on smartphone sales and spend, but this is no longer the case. China and North America smartphone sales are on pace to be flat in 2016, exhibiting a 0.7 per cent and 0.4 per cent growth respectively."With easy sales evaporating, the smartphone companies are being forced to target one-anothers' customer bases in order to sustain growth. And right now, Google is winning.At the end of March, Apple released the iPhone SE - a smaller handset selling for a lower price than the regular iPhone and iPhone Plus. Potentially key to helping revive Apple's flagging sales, it launched too late to factor into Kantar's data, and will be one to watch carefully next time around."Android share could also be negatively affected by high demand for the Apple iPhone SE. iPhone SE sales will be particularly important in China, where success in the mid-tier will determine the top player in the region. Google is making big gains on Apple's iPhone across the globe

Android, which is installed on products made by Samsung, HTC, Sony and many other manufacturers, is forecast to reach 1.1 billion users in 2014, up 26 percent on last year, with the strongest demand in emerging markets.
Apple's iOS and Mac OS operating systems are expected to be in 344 million new iPhones, iPads and Macs this year, Gartner added, representing a 28 percent jump on the number of devices shipped in 2013.
"There is no doubt that there is a volume-versus-value equation, with Android users purchasing lower-cost devices compared to Apple users," Gartner analyst Annette Zimmerman said in a statement on Tuesday.
Microsoft's Windows operating system, which dominates the PC and notebook segments, is forecast to be in 360 million new devices, up from 328 million in 2013.
Growth in the PC and notebook segment has been hit by the popularity of tablet computers, sales of which are forecast to increase by 47 percent this year to 263 million, according to Gartner.
"Users continue to move away from the traditional PC as it becomes more of a shared-content creation tool, while the greater flexibility of tablets, hybrids and lighter notebooks address users' increasingly different usage demands," Gartner research director Ranjit Atwal said.
Sales of mobile phones are expected to continue to increase, but at a slower pace, with the focus moving away from top-end premium devices to mid-level products, he added.
Gartner said it expects combined global shipments of all devices to reach 2.48 billion units this year, up 7.6 per cent on 2013.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>The upcoming release of Microsoft's new operating system, Windows 10, will slow, not boost, PC sales growth this year, market research firm <a href="http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/3088221">Gartner wrote in a new report</a> Monday.According to the report, the global PC shipment market is expected to shrink 4.5% this year from the previous year, to a total of 300 million units worldwide. That's a drop of 1.3 percentage points from Gartner's last estimate.Gartner said the "continued slowdown in PC purchases in Western Europe, Russia, and Japan" have contributed to the lower forecast.But the release of Windows 10 will also play into it."The release of Windows 10 on 29th July will contribute to a slowing professional demand for mobile PCs and premium ultramobiles in 2015, as lifetimes extend by three months," Gartner analyst Ranjit Atwal wrote. In plain English? Most people who want Windows 10 will just update the software, taking advantage of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/windows-10-2015-1">Microsoft's offer of a free upgrade</a> for all Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users, rather than buying a new PC. That will extend the average lifetime of current PCs by three months, Gartner believes.But by the fall, a new wave of Windows 10 PCs at lower prices might spur growth. "However, as suppliers and buyers adjust to new prices, Windows 10 could boost replacements during 2016."The tablet and clamshell market is also expected to contract this year, the report said. Total global shipments will drop 5.3% to 214 million units in 2015, although before bouncing back in 2016 to 228 million total units shipped."The tablet market is hit by fewer new buyers, extended life cycles and little innovation to encourage new purchases...The tablet has become a 'nice to have' device, and there is no real need for an upgrade as regularly as for the phone," Gartner analyst Robert Cozza said.The mobile phone market is expected to grow slightly, but at a slowing rate of 3.3% this year.As a result, Gartner slashed its growth forecast for the total devices market to 1.5% this year, down from the previous forecast of 2.8% growth it released last quarter. It also said total spending on devices will see a 5.7% decline - the first time since 2010 - to $606 million in 2015.The new forecasts are in-line with what other companies have warned recently. Chipmaker AMD just announced on Monday that it expects an 8% drop in revenue this quarter from last year, cutting nearly $50 million in its quarterly revenue forecast.
