Two Indians, human rights activist <keyword id="3337934" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bezwada-Wilson">Bezwada Wilson</keyword> and south Indian classical musician <keyword id="87286" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="TM-Krishna">TM Krishna</keyword>, have been conferred the <keyword id="75562" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ramon-Magsaysay-award">Ramon Magsaysay Award</keyword> for 2016. 
 
Bezwada Wilson, who was born to a dalit family in Karnataka, has been lauded for his efforts towards "asserting the inalienable right to a life of human dignity." The Chennai-born Carnatic musician TM Krishna has been awarded for "ensuring social inclusiveness in culture." 
 
The Ramon Magsaysay Award is an annual award, named after former Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay, to honour "greatness of spirit in selfless service to the peoples of Asia",says the web site of the foundation that selects the awardees. 
 The four other awardees for 2016 are <keyword id="3517257" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Conchita-Carpio-Morales">Conchita Carpio-Morales</keyword> from the Philippines, Indonesian <keyword id="3517258" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dompet-Dhuafa">Dompet Dhuafa</keyword>, <keyword id="3517259" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vientiane-Rescue">Vientiane Rescue</keyword> from Laos and the <keyword id="3517260" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Japan-Overseas-Cooperation-Volunteers">Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers</keyword>. 
 
Carpio-Morales has been awarded for her work in "restoring faith in the rule of law". Dhuafa has been honoured for "expanding the transformative impact of zakat", which in Islam is a form of alms-giving and religious tax. Vientiane Rescue is a group that's been awarded the Magsaysay for its volunteering to save lives at risk. And Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers Building gets the award for contributing "to the reconstruction and progress of developing countries" towards the goal of building a world of genuine solidarity.

 Chaturvedi, who was removed from the post of <keyword id="84569" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="chief-vigilance-officer">Chief Vigilance Officer</keyword> at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=AIIMS">AIIMS</a> in August 2014, was recognised for “his exemplary integrity, courage and tenacity in uncompromisingly exposing and painstakingly investigating <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=corruption+">corruption</a> in public office…”, while Anshu Gupta, founder of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=NGO">NGO</a> Goonj, will be facilitated for “his creative vision in transforming the culture of giving in India, his enterprising <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=leadership+">leadership</a> in treating cloth as a sustainable development resource for the poor…”

10 Indians who received Asia’s coveted Ramon Magsaysay Award

Renowned <keyword id="129504" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="agricultural-scientist" source="Orion">Agricultural scientist</keyword> and the driving force behind India's <keyword id="50335" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="green-revolution" source="Orion">Green Revolution</keyword> MS <keyword id="162353" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swaminathan" source="Orion">Swaminathan</keyword>, passed away on Thursday, at the age of 98. Swaminathan was an eminent agricultural scientist who headed the MS Swaminathan Research Foundation in Taramani, Chennai. Born on August 7, 1925, in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district, Swaminathan was instrumental in developing high-yielding varieties of <keyword id="47609" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paddy" source="Orion">paddy</keyword> that helped ensure India's low-income farmers produce more yield. He was known as the "Father of Economic Ecology" by the United Nations Environment Programme. Swaminathan is survived by his three daughters Soumya Swaminathan, Madhura Swaminathan, and Nitya Swaminathan. In 1987, Swaminathan was awarded the first <keyword id="753977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-food-prize" source="Orion">World Food Prize</keyword> in recognition of his monumental contributions. He was also awarded by Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1971 and the Albert Einstein World Science Award in 1986. (ANI)

MS Swaminathan, father of India's Green Revolution, passes away

Chennai, <keyword id="6359861" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Veteran">Veteran</keyword> oncologist V. Shanta who headed the <keyword id="171643" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cancer-Institute">Cancer Institute</keyword> (WIA) here, popularly known as <keyword id="808850" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Adyar-Cancer-Institute">Adyar Cancer Institute</keyword> died at a private hospital on Tuesday early morning. A Padma Vibuhshan, Padma Bhushan, Padama Shri and Ramon Magsaysay awardee Shanta, 93 was admitted to a private hospital on Monday night as she was unwell. Her end came on Tuesday early morning. Expressing shock at Shanta's death, <keyword id="6356629" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil">Tamil</keyword> Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami said with her dedicated service she expanded and moderninsed the hospital that was started with 12 beds. The hospital gave free <keyword id="6355291" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cancer">cancer</keyword> treatment for the poor, the Chief Minister said. He said Shanta was instrumental in creating public awareness on the importance of periodic testing for detection of cancer. Palaniswami said the <keyword id="6359479" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu-government">Tamil Nadu government</keyword> honoured Shanta with Avvaiyar Award in 2013. Terming Shanta's death as an irreplacable loss for medical fraternity and Tamil Nadu, Palaniswami said she will be given police salute at time of her final rites. Condoling Shanta's demise PMK Founder S. Ramadoss said when it comes to cancer the name that immediately comes to our mind is Shanta. Born into a distinguished scientific family - her immediate grand uncle (C.V.Raman) and uncle (S. Chandrasekar)- Noble Laureates. She graduated (M.B.B.S.) in 1949, D.G.O. in 1952 and M.D, in Obstetrics &amp; Gynecology in 1955. In April 1955, she joined the fledgling Cancer Institute, established in 1954 by the Womens' Indian Association Cancer Relief Fund, as its Resident Medical Officer. PMK's Ramadoss said Shanta joined the Cancer Institute preferring over the Assistant Surgeon's Post in the Women &amp; Children's Hospital, Madras, to which she had been selected by the Madras Public Service Commission. Since then, Shanta's entire professional life was dedicated to the mission of organising care of cancer patients, the study of the disease, its prevention and control, the generation of specialists and scientists in different aspects of Oncologic Sciences. She has played an important role along with Dr. Krishnamurthi in the development of the Cancer Institute (WIA) from a cottage hospital of 12 beds to a major comprehensive Cancer Centre of national and international stature. She has played a pioneering role in all the achievements of the Institute. Shanta was on WHO Advisory Committee on Cancer till March 2005. She was also Convener of the State Advisory Board on Cancer. She has been the Chairman of the INDO-US Collaborative Group on Lymphoid Neoplasias (Indian Chapter), member of many ICMR Committees, member of the ICMR Task Force on Registries and member of the Syndicate of the Anna University. She was President of the Indian Society of Oncology (88-90), President of the Asian &amp; Pacific Federation of Organisations for cancer control (97-99) and President of the 15th Asian &amp; Pacific Cancer Conference (1999). She has participated in a number of Scientific International Collaborative Programmes. According to the Cancer Institute, Shanta has published over 95 papers in national and international journals, contributed chapters in Oncology books, delivered many prestigious orations and participated in many international and national conferences.
