Refuting reports of mass layoffs in the IT sector, <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nasscom">NASSCOM</keyword> said the industry will hire about 1.5 lakh people this year on “net” basis although techies will have to re-skill themselves to stay relevant. Over the past few weeks, there have been reports suggesting that over 50,000 people could be laid off this year from companies like Wipro, Infosys and <keyword id="28721" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cognizant">Cognizant</keyword>. “We categorically reject the reports of mass layoffs in the sector. FY 2017 saw 1.7 lakh people being added, while in Q4 alone, the gross hiring was of over 50,000 by top five companies,” Nasscom President <keyword id="6378162" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="R-Chandrashekhar">R Chandrashekhar</keyword> said. Nasscom said that employees will have to “re-skill or perish” as the world moves to new technologies like automation, robotics, analytics and cyber security. Chandrashekhar said the association has consulted its members who have assured that the industry continues to be a “net” hirer, adding about 1.5 lakh people this year. Also, new opportunities are emerging in areas like tech startups, e-commerce, <keyword id="1929810" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Digital-India">Digital India</keyword> and digital payments. As many as 3 million new jobs are expected to be created by 2025. Representatives from leading companies like Cognizant, Wipro and Mindtree were also present at the media briefing. IT companies have started their annual performance appraisal cycles, which often leads to a number of terminations based on poor performance. IT companies have maintained that there is nothing different this year. “Performance-linked workforce realignment impacts about 0.5-3 per cent of the talent pool and there is no change this year. It is something every company does to stay competitive and have the right skill sets,” he said. However, Nasscom could not clarify the reason why there was noise around the layoffs this year. The reports of mass scale layoffs have compounded the worry in the industry, as the sector is already battling challenges in the business environment and stricter work permit regime in countries like the US, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. Nasscom Chairman <keyword id="164918" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raman-Roy">Raman Roy</keyword> said companies are making huge investments in training and re-skilling their employees on new technologies to ensure they stay upto date. “The need for re-skilling talent is a reality that we have to address. To keep up in a fast-evolving technology environment, the IT industry must reinvent itself by re- skilling its employees in new and upcoming technologies,” he added. Chandrashekhar said there has been a “gentle deceleration” in the growth rate of net hiring as companies move focus from scale to skills.

By Bharat Sharma New Delhi, May 18 () The Table Tennis Federation of India on Monday sought written consent from its top 16 players to join a training camp after the government allowed sports complexes to open but wary paddlers said they would prefer to wait a while. Most players, including India's leading players Sharath Kamal and G Sathiyan, said they were not comfortable travelling anytime soon amid the COVID-19 pandemic. TT camps are held at NIS Patiala, Sonepat and Kolkata. "We were asked to join camp at the end of the month but I feel it is too early for that. Cases continue to rise and travel restrictions are in place. Training can wait until situation improves significantly," world number 31 Sharath, who is based in Chennai, told . "Anyway, all ITTF (international body) activities are suspended till end of June. There is no event planned in the near future. It would be nice for the whole team to be together again but not anytime soon." The players have been confined to their homes ever since the lockdown was enforced almost two months ago. The government on Sunday extended the lockdown till May 31 with more relaxations. Like Sharath, world number 32 Sathiyan is based in Chennai and said he would rather train in his hometown given the current situation. "It is not safe to travel in the given situation. I would prefer to train in Chennai at Raman TTHPC along with my coach (S Raman) and a few sparring partners post the lockdown. "Also, I have a great setup here with the necessary fitness training regime under Ramji Srinivasan (former Indian cricket team trainer). Hope I will get the necessary permission from the authorities," said Sathiyan. TTFI secretary general M P Singh wrote to the players on Monday morning, seeking their availability for the training camp following government's announcement. "We have written to the players (8 men and 8 women) to check their availability for the training camp as early as next week. If they are ready to resume training, we can organise something by next week or end of the month," Singh told . However, with travel restrictions in place, it remains to be seen how willing players assemble at one place. While Sharath and Sathiyan are in Chennai, star women paddler Manika Batra is in Pune. "Since, the government announced the opening of stadiums and complexes, it must have thought about how it would reopen sporting activity in the country. It can only answer on how it plans to assemble the players at one place. Either of the three centres -- NIS Patiala, Sonepat and Kolkata -- will be fine with us," said Singh. The federation has also written to coaches Soumyadeep Roy and Arup Basak on their availability for the camp. **Arjuna Award nomination** Singh also informed that TTFI will be nominating Sanil Shetty, Madhurika Patkar and Sutirtha Mukherjee for the Arjuna Award. New Delhi, Feb 18 () MaxWholesale, a B2B e-commerce platform for kirana stores, on Tuesday said it has raised USD 3 million (about Rs 21.4 crore) in funding led by IAN Fund-I and Abu Dhabi-based Al Falaj Investment Company (AFI). The Series-A round also saw participation from existing investor Maple Capital, along with Infoedge's ex-CFO Ambarish Raghuvanshi, Maple Capital's Abhinav Grover and Biba Group's Siddharth Bindra, among others, a statement said. Raman Roy and Abdelghani have joined MaxWholesale's board as directors, it added. "With the investment, MaxWholesale will hire talent to develop its technology further and accelerate growth... MaxWholesale is also looking to expand its reach to Kirana stores in the coming months," it said. The platform currently services 10,000 kirana stores in Delhi. The company manages various warehouses in Delhi-NCR with the delivery fleet of 60 vehicles in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida and Ghaziabad. "We felt that there was a dire need for technology in this sector and, hence, we introduced data science into this field to make restocking more predictable and organised," MaxWholesale founder and CEO Samarth Agrawal said. With this approach, the company is aiming to change the way in which the business is done at these stores, he added. "In the last year, we clocked 20 times growth in terms of revenue. Going forward, we are excited to use this investment to extend our capabilities and drive a bigger impact for FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) chains and kirana stores through our technology-driven platform," he said. He added that the company will soon open its ecosystem to NBFC (non-banking financial company) lenders for providing credit and working capital loans to its kirana stores.  <keyword id="6373684" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="chatbots">Chatbots</keyword>, which are computer programme that simulates human conversation or chat through <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=artificial+intelligence&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">artificial intelligence</a>, can replace customer service representatives and take away jobs of many in the BPO industry. 
 
Biggies such as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=facebook&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Facebook</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=google&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Google</a>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=skype&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Skype</a> are opting for chatbots for news, weather, taxi services and slowly they also enter the BPO segment. 
Raman Roy of Quatrro told ET, “The repetitive tasks started going away more than a decade ago, it has already happened and will continue to happen, while we are adapting, more and more of these low-end tasks will go away, you can see the signs.” 
 
Meanwhile, Susir Kumar of Intelenet told ET that robots will take away more and more of the "mundane human" tasks. 
 
"The billing will never be wrong, the line will never drop. But, as technology evolve, transactions will become more complicated and need for human intervention will arise for different kind of jobs," he added. 
 
As per reports, chatbots is still at a nascent stage and the scope for automation would be around six per cent of the $2-3 billion domestic BPO industry.

Chatbots are bad news for Indian BPOs and the reason is quite obvious

Many of the US states are now focussing on luring Indian IT companies and offering huge incentives. One of the US states which has rolled out a red carpet for Indian IT companies, especially <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> is <keyword id="26517" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indiana">Indiana</keyword>. Indiana is offering around $31 million in incentives to Infosys as the state looks to employ many of its local IT professionals. Mostly, the incentives will be in the form of tax abatements and one-time grants. What is being dubbed as one of the largest incentive packages ever handed out by Indiana, the incentives will cover majority of Infosys’ cost of setting up its centre. As per several reports, Infosys said it will spend about $8.7 million to lease and equip its office space in the state. "States, cities and counties can all offer incentives. The idea is to pick places that offer incentives and has a local college network that can provide talent that is cost-effective and can be trained. We aren't going to be hiring from Stanford or MIT,” an IT executive told ET. The Infosys deal took a few months to hammer out, Indiana governor Eric Holcomb said in a statement. Holcomb is also planning a trip to India to sell his state to other IT companies, he said. The Indiana Economic Development Corporation plans to offer up to $15,250 in conditional tax credits for each job the company creates and up to $500,000 in training grants. "Midwest states are generally more aggressive in holding out incentives because they haven't seen the kind of job creation that states like New York and California have,” Ganesh Natarajan, chairman of skill development platform 5F World, told ET. Meanwhile, chairman of industry body <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nasscom">Nasscom</keyword> Raman Roy said the incentives had nothing to do with the H-1B visas and were related to the jobs that the IT industry creates. However, this is not a new system as in the past, <keyword id="28721" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cognizant">Cognizant</keyword> also received such incentives and expanded in Tampa, Florida. But incentives will become increasingly important. Unlike India, where IT companies control where they deploy employees, in the US, they will have to build centres across the country as they look at attracting Americans to work with them.

It is for this reason <keyword id="2741713" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prasoon-Gupta">Prasoon Gupta</keyword> and <keyword id="633617" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ankush-Sharma">Ankush Sharma</keyword>’s venture is not simply a restaurant, but an innovation/incubation center of sorts. It's a place for students to interact and exchange ideas with former graduates/seniors/mentors while sitting across the food tables savouring some delicious food in between their classes. 
	 
	This idea cafes will see mentoring sessions by a group of over 300 entrepreneurs and professionals like InMobi co-founder Mohit Saxena, Commonfloor founder Sumit Jain, and Raman Roy, chairman of Quattro BPO Solutions among others.

	 
	For their noble deed, the duo has got 2,200 sq/ft space inside the campus, and that too at a very cheap rent. 

	 
	Their vedic journey started back in February 2014 when Prasoon had quit his five year old venture Tech-buddy, a consultancy firm, and opened an NGO called Swarajneeti with the sole purpose of educating the modern generation for transparency in democratic India via innovative technological tools. 
	 Post elections, however, he decided to devote all his time to his new venture <keyword id="2241713" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sattviko">Sattviko</keyword>, along with his batchmate Ankush Sharma. 
	The start-up was inspired by the sattvik way of life that emphasized purity and served cuisine from India. But soon after some time, they adopted cuisines from across the world, such as Mexican, Italian and American that conform to certain rules - no onions or garlic! 

	 
	Sattviko started as a quick-service restaurant and then evolved over the years to become an e-marketplace, delivering an exceptional experience to customers who look to adopt yoga and its practices.

Ever imagined you can manage funding for your <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=start+ups">start up</a> while trekking up the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/A-look-at-the-picturesque-locations-of-Ramgarh-which-is-emerging-as-a-wannabe-startup-destination/articleshow/48773690.cms">Himalayas</a> or <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/A-look-at-the-picturesque-locations-of-Ramgarh-which-is-emerging-as-a-wannabe-startup-destination/articleshow/48773690.cms">fishing in a mountain-river</a>? Well, it seems to be a reality now. A quaint hillstation in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/A-look-at-the-picturesque-locations-of-Ramgarh-which-is-emerging-as-a-wannabe-startup-destination/articleshow/48773690.cms">Uttarakhand</a>, Ramgarh, best known for Tagore’s stint while writing his famous Gitanjali, has suddenly evoked interest among <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=angel+investors">angel investors</a>. 
 
In an aim to establish a base, a dozen of high-profile angel investors are gradually setting up a base at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/A-look-at-the-picturesque-locations-of-Ramgarh-which-is-emerging-as-a-wannabe-startup-destination/articleshow/48773690.cms">Ramgarh</a>. Being off beat, this place is a bliss of solitude, where leisure tourists from all over the country frequent to watch birds and admire the snow-capped peaks of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Himalayas">Himalayas</a>. 
Pramod Bhasin, Raman Roy and Saurabh Srivastava, who are among the pioneers of business process outsourcing and IT industry in the country, have come together with some like-minded IT stalwarts including Sanjeev Bikhchandani of Info Edge, Ashish Dhawan, cofounder of ChrysCapital and Ashoka University; and, Pune Bhatia, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/A-look-at-the-picturesque-locations-of-Ramgarh-which-is-emerging-as-a-wannabe-startup-destination/articleshow/48773690.cms">country head at TPG Capital India</a>, to develop a private estate spread over 10 acres in the Kumaon hill town. 
 
Since most of them are active angel investors based in Delhi with a sizeable clutch of companies under their belt, some now want to make Ramgarh an adda for startups as it offers a relaxed environment to check out the tens of investment pitches they get every day. 
"Since we have started to go there more regularly, we could spend some time with these companies and afford to have long chats about their propositions - a rarity in Delhi," said Srivastava, who helped start tech firms like IIS Infotech, which was renamed Xansa and later acquired by Steria. 
 
Srivastava, who has invested in about 55 companies including Stayzilla and Dhruva, is also organising investor meets or startup investment sessions in Ramgarh apart from cultural events such as Sufi music festivals. The estate, which has just over a dozen or so cottages, is private, exclusive and structured in a manner that no one can sell out without the permission of the others. 
 
Spotted initially by Srivastava,<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/A-look-at-the-picturesque-locations-of-Ramgarh-which-is-emerging-as-a-wannabe-startup-destination/articleshow/48773690.cms"> Mohit Goyal</a>, cofounder of Indian Angel Network, and conservation and landscape architect Sujata Kohli, the land on a hillock was purchased seven years ago under a cooperative and it took almost five years to build. Kohli landscaped the entire hillock where there are no boundary walls between homes and all cottages have the same architecture. "We didn't want any Spanish or Greek villas therefore we have used local material so that the place merges with the surroundings," said Kohli who is now working on a water harvesting unit for the area to make it self-sufficient and is also an investor in the project. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/A-look-at-the-picturesque-locations-of-Ramgarh-which-is-emerging-as-a-wannabe-startup-destination/articleshow/48773690.cms">Vikas Srivastava</a>, a partner with Luthra &amp; Luthra law firm and a member of the group, said there is camaraderie within the group and they are taking every step to ensure that only likeminded people are there. 
 
"We are all part of the same ecosystem with aligned interests; mostly everyone is from the tech background and...entrepreneurship," said Bhasin. Their interest in malts, whisky and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/A-look-at-the-picturesque-locations-of-Ramgarh-which-is-emerging-as-a-wannabe-startup-destination/articleshow/48773690.cms">food</a> act as catalyst in promoting start ups and enjoying the leisure.
