Everyone at court was waiting in bated breath for <keyword id="38062" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ram-Jethmalani">Ram Jethmalani</keyword> to speak, as he appeared as the counsel of one of the country’s most controversial cases between RIL and RNRL at Bombay High Court in 2009. Jethmalani was ominously quiet as he heard his opponent and famous advocate Harish Salve speak for hours at a stretch. When the court was adjourned, Jethmalani stood up and requested the bench to stall for a few minutes as he had something to say. Every reported had a pen tight on the notepad and ears peeled, but Jethmalani said, “Once in a village there was a man who spoke so much that everyone was too tired of listening to him.” Salve was amused, and the bench cracked up. Today, one of India’s most famous voices fell silent as he passed away at the age of 96 following a prolonged illness. His funeral will be held in Delhi on Sunday. A clan of warriors It was not just his candour that Jethmalani was known for, but also his courage. He was one of the few who represented clients who went against the government. Probably, it was something he inherited from his ancestors. They had fought for his homeland Sindh alongside British general Charles Napier, who eventually won the war but also admitted ‘to a noble form of rascality’. Jethmalani became those industrious few refugees who thrived in a new India. He was all of 17 when he earned his law degree, thanks to the many ‘triple promotions’ he received at school. Famous clients and infamous cases In the first few years Jethmalani earned the dubious reputation of being a ‘smuggler’s advocate’ after he represented mafia leader Haji Mastan in a case. He was only the first of the many underdogs that Jethmalani both successfully and unsuccessfully, represented. He picked cases that no one else would and select clients that no one would dare to — including stock market scamster Harshad Mehta, the man who killed former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi, V Sriharan, and Afzal Guru who was convicted for an attack on the parliament. But, Jethmalani wasn’t always on the right side of things in the governments and public opinion. He defended religious guru Asaram Bapu in a rape case against a minor. He was also the lawyer of Manu Sharma who was accused of shooting Jesssica Lal — a case which turned into a public outrage. Yet, Jethmalani was unfazed through it all — even when public criticized him and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expelled him in 2013. By the time he retired in 2017, he probably had as many detractors as fans and clients combined in an illustrious career. And he did not go out quietly. BJP has announced that the party’s spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi and former Lok Sabha MP Satish Dubey will contest for these two Rajya Sabha MP posts from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar respectively. Samastipur in Bihar will go for by polls due to the demise of Ramchandra Paswan who won from this seat on behalf of LJP in 2019 elections. Congress has nominated Dr. Ashok Kumar to contest from this seat. Earlier during the last elections, he lost to Ramchandra Paswan. During the upcoming bye polls on October 21, 2019, Sayeeda Banu, Rita Chaudhary, Harendra Mirdha and Mannu Devi will field for Congress party from the assembly constituencies of Kishanganj (Bihar), Mandawa (Rajasthan), Khinwsar (Rajasthan) and Balha (Uttar Pradesh) respectively.

Concerned about the failure of bringing back the <keyword id="6356023" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Black-Money">black money</keyword>, noted lawyer <keyword id="38062" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ram-Jethmalani">Ram Jethmalani</keyword> has urged the US in helping India to bring back the money stacked overseas. He has put the blame for the failure on Union Finance Minister <keyword id="42575" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Arun-Jaitley">Arun Jaitley</keyword>. The former law minister has alleged that Jaitley has not been sincere and honest to peruse <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> Modi's goal of bringing back the black money, as per a PTI report. In a key-note address at an event organised by the <keyword id="236377" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="US-India-Business-Council">US India Business Council</keyword> and <keyword id="2384805" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-National-Bar-Association">Indian National Bar Association</keyword> in Washington, Jethmalani congratulated the US for taking strong and assertive actions against those who held black money overseas and in the process prosecuting several <keyword id="47116" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Swiss-Banks">Swiss banks</keyword>. 

	He further said the US has access to the information about list of names of people who have black money in Swiss banks. 
 

	The United States should help India by sharing the names of those Indian nationals, he said. 
 The former BJP leader said he was "deeply disappointed" over the approach of the <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword> in bringing black money to India, which he argued is not possible under current circumstances. 

	In a hard-hitting address, Jethmalani criticized Arun Jaitley. "My disappointment with Modi started the day he appointed his Cabinet. I am highly critical of the people who he has appointed as minister of finance," he said.

Blaming Arun Jaitley for the failure of bringing back black money, Jethmalani seeks US help

After Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> started showing in the image search results for "<keyword id="2888765" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="top-10-criminals">Top 10 criminals</keyword>, search engine giant <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> apologised for any "confusion or misunderstanding" caused by showing the Indian Prime Minister alongside US mobster Al Capone and other top criminals. 
 
A PTI report revealed that in an email reply to an AFP inquiry, Google said that "These results trouble us and are not reflective of the opinions of Google. Sometimes, the way images are described on the Internet can yield surprising results to specific queries." 
 According to BBC news, “Mr Modi figures prominently in the search alongside images of terrorists, murderers and dictators. Other world leaders on the list include former US president <keyword id="13717" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="george-bush">George Bush</keyword> and Libya's Muammar Gaddafi.” 
 “Other prominent Indians who come up in the search include Delhi Chief Minister <keyword id="260213" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arvind-Kejriwal">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword>, lawyer <keyword id="38062" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ram-Jethmalani">Ram Jethmalani</keyword>, fugitive underworld don <keyword id="2888763" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dawood-Ibrahim-and-Bollywood">Dawood Ibrahim and Bollywood</keyword> actor <keyword id="7645" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Dutt">Sanjay Dutt</keyword> who is serving a jail term in connection with deadly blasts in Mumbai in 1993,” BBC report added.

However, It was unclear whether the outcome resulted from a search algorithm being duped or flawed, or was caused by a user taking advantage of crowd-sourced editing capabilities intended to improve maps with local knowledge.

​Embarrassed Google apologises after PM Modi’s image appeared in ‘top 10 criminals’ search result

Senior advocate <keyword id="38062" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ram-Jethmalani">Ram Jethmalani</keyword>, who has been fighting the legal battle to bring back <keyword id="6356023" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Black-Money">black money</keyword> stashed money abroad, has expressed disappointment over the government's failure in recovering the black money. He called the government's response on the issue a "total disappointment." 
 "I am not recovering my money, but the nation's money. Till a legislation is passed, not a farthing will come. I drafted a law and sent a copy to the Prime Minister. It has been passed on to the finance ministry. Are they in favour of this legislation? If they don't want to do it, they should let it be known. Otherwise, I will go to the real sovereign — the people," said Jethmalani, a former member of the <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword>. 
 The BJP had promised to bring back black money during the election campaign. It had also constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to look into this. “But not a single rupee has been brought back in the last six months,” Jethmalani's lawyer Anil Divan told the Supreme bench of Chief Justice HL Dattu and justices <keyword id="135052" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Madan-B-Lokur">Madan B Lokur</keyword> and AK Sikri. 
 
Jethmalani had played a key role in filing a public interest litigation (PIL) on the issue of black money.

Not A Single Rupee Has Been Brought Back In The Last 6 Months: Ram Jethmalani

Talking tough with the Modi-government over the issue of <keyword id="6356023" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Black-Money">black money</keyword>, the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> On Tuesday has asked the Centre to disclose names of all Indians being investigated for allegedly stashing untaxed or "black money" abroad. 
 
"Why are you providing a protective umbrella to foreign bank account holders?" the judges angrily asked the Centre and added that "We can't leave the issue of bringing back black money to government. It will never happen during our time." 
 The apex court’s tough stand comes a day after the central government named eight people in the top court who are being prosecuted for illicit bank accounts in <keyword id="103" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Switzerland">Switzerland</keyword> and other countries. 
 Based on a petition filed by <keyword id="361152" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="noted-lawyer">noted lawyer</keyword> <keyword id="38062" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ram-Jethmalani">Ram Jethmalani</keyword>, the court has been monitoring the investigations into black money since 2009. 
 The new government, just like the <keyword id="26374" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UPA-government">UPA government</keyword>, has also been arguing in the court that tax treaties with other countries prohibit the disclosure of names of account holders till charges against the alleged offenders are framed. 
 Also, the BJP government today asserted it will investigate each person whose name has been shared by countries like <keyword id="87" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Germany">Germany</keyword> and Switzerland and then present the details to court. 
 
However, the Supreme Court, which has appointed a team of retired judges and bureaucrats to map how to recover black money, said, "You do not do anything. Black Money Case: Supreme Court Talks Tough, Orders Modi-led Government To Disclose All Names By Tomorrow

MUMBAI/NEW DELHI: With <keyword id="6374198" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BJP-President">BJP president</keyword> <keyword id="6355521" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amit-Shah">Amit Shah</keyword> issuing categorical instructions to the party’s Maharashtra leaders not to accept anything less than 130 assembly seats from <keyword id="6358821" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shiv-Sena">Shiv Sena</keyword>, the 25-year-old saffron alliance is likely to disintegrate, say observers. 
 Both Sena and <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> are said to be preparing to go their separate ways. The two parties have asked their cadre to prepare to go solo in the October 15 polls. The state BJP has convened a meeting of senior party functionaries in Mumbai on Tuesday to review the political situation in the wake of the aborted seat-sharing talks. 
 
As it became clear that the alliance was set to walk into the sunset, the two parties began the blame game. BJP state unit chief Devendra Fadnavis accused the Sena of bringing seat-sharing talks to a halt. “You can’t hold negotiations with a person who has closed the doors of his mind,” he told a Marathi news channel. 
 
A key Sena functionary said the alliance is dying an untimely death because of BJP’s Big Brother attitude. “BJP should accept the fact that Sena is a senior ally in the state... We accepted BJP’s ‘Mission 272’ during the LS polls. Why should our ‘Mission 150’ ruffle it?” he asked. 
 
 
 
 The Sena did make a feeble attempt earlier in the day to revive the alliance. A close confidant of Sena president <keyword id="53973" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Uddhav-Thackeray">Uddhav Thackeray</keyword> rang up BJP’s poll observer for the state, Om Prakash Mathur, suggesting resumption of seat-distribution talks, sources said.

But Mathur insisted on the party’s formula that the BJP should get 130 seats and the Sena could contest 140. The Sena president’s emissary did not get back to Mathur. 
 
Speculation was rife that the Maharashtra BJP may go for new allies, including the MNS and the NCP. However, BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy scotched talk of any kind of partnership with the NCP. 
 
“Actually, we would want the saffron partnership to survive the present crisis and we are eager to contest the assembly polls as allies. This is the collective wish of the people of Maharashtra. However, should the alliance end, the BJP will contest the election [all 288 seats] on its own. There is no question of cosying up to new friends,” Rudy said. 
 
Thackeray’s Sunday formula, which earmarked 151 seats for the Sena and 119 for BJP, with the remaining 18 seats going to four smaller allies, has been rejected by BJP. “The party is over. But we have no regrets,” said a senior BJP functionary. 
 
Sena and BJP offered completely contradictory versions on reports that Shah had spoken with Thackeray over the phone earlier in the day and urged for reconciliation. While Sena rubbished these reports, Rudy said, “Shah has spoken to the Sena chief, and that itself indicates that we are very, very eager to have the alliance. We won’t pull the plug. We are hopeful a solution will be found.” 
 
 
 
 
Sources said neither party wanted to create the impression that it was the one pulling the plug. 
 
Sources in New Delhi said Shah had reiterated to Sena president BJP’s demand for 130 seats, saying the party was prepared to accept the seats which Sena had never won in the last 25 years. Sena is then learned to have improved its offer to 126 seats instead of 119, sources said. 
 
The state BJP, however, said there was no new offer from Sena for more seats. “There is practically no room for fresh talks with Sena as Thackeray has said in no uncertain terms that he would not offer a single seat more to us,” a BJP functionary pointed out. 
 Reports also said Uddhav had spoken to two top BJP leaders—foreign minister <keyword id="6355111" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sushma-Swaraj">Sushma Swaraj</keyword> and home minister Rajnath Singh—on Sunday to try and find a way out of the impasse. 
 
The saffron alliance’s fate was sealed at the BJP’s Parliamentary board meeting in New Delhi on Sunday, sources said. The state BJP leaders briefed the party president on the Sena’s “haughty” stance on seat-sharing and re-allocation of 59 Sena seats which it has been losing in five consecutive polls. 
 
Shah is believed to have told the Maharashtra leaders to take the final decision on whether or not to continue the alliance. He, however, made it clear that the party should not accept anything less than 130 seats. 
 
Shah is upset with the Sena for several reasons, it is said. First, for ignoring his “come two steps forward” appeal last week. Second, for rejecting the BJP’s 140:130:18 formula. Third, Thackeray announcing the 151:119:18 formula at a Sena conclave on Sunday in full media glare. “Seat-sharing proposals are not announced on TV channels,” remarked state BJP leader Eknath Khadse. 
 
 
 Fourth, for referring to <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> Narendra Modi’s ‘chaiwalla’ antecedents at the Sena’s Sunday conclave. Fifthly, for snubbing Om Prakash Mathur, the BJP’s poll observer in Maharashtra, by sending Aditya Thackeray as the Sena’s emissary to a crucial meeting with Mathur last week. 
 
BJP is keen on retaining the Rashtriya Samaj Party, RPI and Shiv Sangram Sanghatana as allies in the post-Sena era as part of a rainbow coalition of caste-based parties. 
 
Sena tried to put up a brave face in the middle of this crisis in the alliance. “Sena has survived many crises in the past. We will emerge stronger from the present one as well,” said Sena leader Vinod Ghosalkar, an MLA. 
 
Pooh-poohing talks of the MNS joining hands with the BJP, MNS leader Nitin Sardesai, also an MLA, said, “As of now, we would like to concentrate on the polls entirely on our own.”

NEW DELHI: The incoming BJP government with <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> as PM will withdraw from the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> the UPA government's petition filed on May 16, when trends had indicated its drubbing in the <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> polls, seeking recall of the court's direction to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money. 
 
A top BJP source told TOI that they would withdraw the petition. "We will deal with it after the government formation process gets over and law officers are in place," the source said. 
 The UPA government's petition, which sought review of the court's May 4 order, also said it would not divulge the names of LGT Bank account holders to petitioner <keyword id="38062" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Ram-Jethmalani">Ram Jethmalani</keyword> as it would violate the confidentiality clause in the double taxation avoidance treaty between India and Germany. 
 
In fact, the new review petition reiterated the grounds it had raised in its earlier petition seeking review of the court's July 4, 2011 judgment directing setting up of an SIT headed by a retired SC judge as well as revealing the names of LGT Bank account holders. 
 
After the court dismissed the review petition on May 1 and directed the government three days later to notify the SIT headed by Justice M B Shah, with Justice Arijit Pasayat as his deputy, the UPA government moved the petition seeking to wriggle out of the mandate of the July 4, 2011 judgment, which was reiterated in the May 1 and 4 orders. 
 
The review petition listed 53 grounds, including elaborate arguments on separation of power, virtually telling the court that it was encroaching into the executive's domain by passing orders on how to deal with black money. 
 The <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword> would have found it difficult to endorse the UPA's last petition in the SC as it has been a votary of acting tough against those who stash illegal money in foreign banks. In fact, it had made it an election issue.

Modi Set To Lift UPA's Veil On Black Money

Centre today told the <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> that information on <keyword id="6356023" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Black-Money">black money</keyword> given by foreign countries cannot be made public. The next hearing in the case will take place on October 28. 
 Senior advocate <keyword id="38062" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ram-Jethmalani">Ram Jethmalani</keyword> said that this is an attempt by the government to shield those who have stashed black money abroad. 
 Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government had, on its first day in office, constituted a high-powered special investigation team (<keyword id="45814" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="SIT">SIT</keyword>) to look into the issue of black money. 
 
The government has given the SIT a free hand to probe the issue. It will file periodic status reports to the Supreme Court. 
 
The Supreme Court had asked the government to set up a SIT to probe individuals whose names were disclosed by Germany for having accounts in that country.

Jaitley, along with the former Foreign Minister, the late Sushma Swaraj -- <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/sushma-swaraj-indias-former-foreign-minister-passes-away-at-the-age-of-67/articleshow/70561044.cms" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">who passed away earlier this month</a>-- were instrumental in keeping the Bharatiya Janata Party relevant, as an opposition party, in the ten years preceding 2014 when Narendra Modi swept to power as India's Prime Minister. Modi himself owes a lot to Jaitley for his rise to political prominence in India. Not just Modi, even the BJP's harshest critics found it way easier to deal or negotiate with Jaitley. A very apt example of Jaitley's realpolitik, his ability in the <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Politics/1JEYCQDdw88BvxjCIHATxK/Reforms-are-the-art-of-the-possible-Arun-Jaitley.html" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">'art of the possible'</a>, is the rollout of the complicated Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017, through the GST Council-- which Jaitley led until May 2019-- where Jaitley had to convince state governments with conflicting interests to find a common ground. It is not possible to be a successful politician or a lawyer without making a few enemies. But the smooth-talking Arun Jaitley, who studied at St Xavier's and Shri Ram College of Commerce, wore both these hats causing little or no animosity around him. Paradoxically, Jaitley was also sharp-tongued and temperamental by nature but he dictated his mood and not the other way around. When the Supreme Court struck down an Act which intended to break the age-old collegium system of appointing higher judiciary, Jaitley was quick to call it the “tyranny of the unelected”, something he knew it will be thrown back at him for his electoral failures. Jaitley remained an nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Indian Parliament, from 2000 to 2018 as he never won an election. The Former Chief Justice of India, RM Lodha, did taunt him in <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tD2GNu556aA" data-type="tilCustomLink">a televised national debate in 2015</a>. But Jaitley was prepared and he knew how to direct the debate in the direction he wanted. That was his skill, the ability to know the strengths and weaknesses, not just of himself but of his rivals too, like few else can.  Jaitley could see the future and he placed his bets, and made friends, accordingly right from the days as a student politician, to when he became a lawyer and later, the member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Jaitley was Vajpayee’s man who stood by Modi Years before Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister and was barely a politician of any significance, Jaitley became his friend. Modi was living out his exile from Gujarat politics in 1995 at the BJP party headquarters in Delhi, when he met Jaitley--who was then called ‘Vajpayee’s man’. Jaitley had lobbied for <a href="https://www.outlookindia.com/magazine/story/ties-that-bind/291379">Modi and turned </a>instrumental in making him the chief minister and later the country's Prime Minister. And his ability to network was so slick that even when he chose sides, he made no foes. For one, he chose Modi over LK Advani as the Prime Ministerial candidate in 2013, and yet remained close to the latter. Years later, everyone came to know Jaitley as Modi’s man. The current Prime Minister had so much confidence in Jaitley that during the first five years of the Modi government, Arun Jaitley held the portfolios of Finance, Corporate Affairs, Defence, and Information and Broadcasting-- and at times he was in multiple important portfolios simultaneously. A <a href="https://caravanmagazine.in/sports/rajat-sharma-the-ddca-and-the-perks-of-a-close-friendship-with-arun-jaitley" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">similar friendship forged with Rajat Sharma</a>, the founding editor of India TV, one of India's most influential television channels, lasted Jaitley's lifetime. Sharma reportedly used to drive Jaitley around the Delhi University on his scooter while the latter was campaigning as a student politician in the 1970s. Jaitley represented both Coke and Pepsi as a lawyer against each other at different times He could have even written the famous book ‘How to make friends and influence enemies?’ if Dale Carnegie wouldn’t have beaten him to it. Jaitley had represented two of the world’s most bitter rivals—<a href="https://www.sify.com/news/how-everybody-loves-arun-jaitley-news-columns-pmwpk3ebbdfjd.html" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Coca Cola and Pepsi as a lawyer</a>. He was Coca Cola’s lawyer for a case against Pepsi and vice versa. Though many would have rolled their eyes at this feat, for him it was a small game. Jaitley's frienship with rivals Sonia Gandhi and P Chidambaram In the <a href="https://www.outlookindia.com/magazine/story/ties-that-bind/291379" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">long list of unlikely friends</a> is Sonia Gandhi, the head of the rival Congress party, and former Finance Minister, and a lawyer turned politician just like him, P Chidambaram. Jaitley seemed to have gotten through his life keeping all his friends along with a successful career. But many of his friendships were tested, in court as well as Parliament. In 2012, Jaitley was a part of the Opposition party, and he was chosen to question and grill P Chidambaram, the home minister of the ruling Congress party about <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/about/what-is-aircel-maxis-case" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">the Aircel-Maxis deal</a>. Chidambaram started answering the question by saying that <a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/opinion/aircel-maxis-deal-probe-will-test-friendship-between-chidambaram-and-jaitley-116030300275_1.html">he was happy that </a>“a friend of 22 years has questioned him.” Though later through the session, Chidambaram turned emotional and “felt as if someone plunged a dagger into him.” Their friendship withstood the barbs, the scams, as the Congress politician continued to attend Jaitley’s annual lunch parties which also doubled as his <a href="https://www.outlookindia.com/magazine/story/ties-that-bind/291379">birthday </a>celebration. Jaitley's rivalry with Subramanian Swamy and Ram Jethmalani Two of Jaitley’s most vicious critics are country’s top lawyers Ram Jethmalani and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy. Both have <a href="https://www.pgurus.com/mr-arun-jaitley-hope-you-have-learnt-your-lesson-for-treating-sonia-family-with-kid-gloves-you-owe-answers-in-mallya-exit/" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">passed vitriolic comments</a> against Jaitley and they both had old beefs to settle. Jaitley was once the legal assistant to Jethmalani. Yet, the camaraderie did not last long. Jaitley is known to <a href="http://www.indialegallive.com/commercial-news/controversy-news/battle-legal-eagles-21529">have influenced Vajpayee </a>to push Jethmalani from his position as the law minister unceremoniously. The fire-breathing lawyer had never forgiven Jaitley nor forgotten the slight, and had used every excuse to criticise him. He also went back to court as Delhi chief minister Arun Kejriwal’s lawyer in a libel case, just for the pleasure of cross-examining his old adversary. But Jaitley was not a man to be easily undone either and kept his cool, passing the bitter examination with flying colours. Jaitley was also not undone even as Swamy questioned his every move. This rivalry too started when he found a legal loophole to deny the payment of his dues over a case he argued. Ever since, <a href="https://theprint.in/politics/subramanian-swamys-rivalry-with-arun-jaitley-goes-back-to-1993-iit-delhi-salary-row/219800/">he accused Jaitley </a>of being a Congress insider, instigator or a coup and much more. When Jaitley did try to clamp him over discipline, Swamy retorted, “People giving me unasked for advice of discipline and restraint don’t realise that if I disregard discipline there would be a bloodbath.” Jaitley wisely never rose to the bait, like a seasoned solider who picks his battles. Jaitley may be no more but the way he deftly maneuvered India's labyrinth political space will provide lessons in the art of the possible.
