Uber has managed to overtake Indian rivals like <keyword id="108722" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Meru-Cabs">Meru Cabs</keyword> and Carzonrent, which operates <keyword id="610614" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Easy-Cabs">Easy Cabs</keyword>. 
 
According to a filing with the Registrar of Companies (RoC), Uber’s revenues in India grew over fivefold to Rs 374 crore in 2015-16, while Meru posted revenues of Rs 323 crore during the same period. Easy Cabs, on the other hand, clocked sales of Rs 216 crore. Uber's biggest Indian rival Ola is yet to declare its numbers. 
 
Just a year ago, both these rivals were four times bigger than Uber in India. In 2014-15, Meru had revenues of Rs 289 crore while Easy Cabs posted sales of Rs 263 crore.Uber's sales, in comparison, stood at Rs 69 crore. 
 Uber has already committed $1 billion and the firm's cofounder <keyword id="1739133" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Travis-Kalanick">Travis Kalanick</keyword>, in a January visit to India, had said the company would double its pledged investment if it sees more than five times the return. After Uber sold off its China operations to Didi Chuxing earlier this year, it has further accelerated its ef forts in India, which is now its second-largest market after US. 
 "We had sold that division for Rs 200 crore and there was a significant revenue from the business that doesn't come into our portfolio," <keyword id="325678" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajiv-K-Vij">Rajiv K Vij</keyword>, CEO, Carzonrent, told ET. 
 
Vij claimed the company's car rental business grew on an average of 21-22% and it had a profit margin of around 30%. "We are not buying business like some others; we are doing a sustainable business and our operations are continuously growing, it is profitable. That's the difference between our business and theirs," he said. 
 <keyword id="3820291" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nilesh-Sangoi">Nilesh Sangoi</keyword>, the newly appointed chief executive of Meru Cabs, said the company's revenue have grown by 14% in the previous year and they are EBITDA positive. 
 
"Right now the industry is talking about Rs 3,500-4,000 crore losses individually for some taxi players. It kind of creates a different market where they can buy the market share through capital. But, we are not in that game," he told ET.

(EDS-adds details) Chennai, Apr 24 (): Tamil Nadu Chief MinisterK Palaniswami has announced a complete shutdown beginningSunday in Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai for four days tocheck the COVID-19 spread, as two people--a 67-year-old manand a 70-year-old woman -- died due to coronavirus while 72people tested positive on Friday.The fresh cases have taken the total aggregate inthe state to 1,755, a health department bulletin said. With the death of the two people, the total numberof deaths in the state now stands at 22. Fifty-two of the 72 cases were from Chennai alone,taking the tally in the state capital to 452, the bulletinsaid. According to the health department, the 67-yearold man who was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi GovernmentGeneral Hospital here on April 14 died on April 22. It was confirmed later that the patient wasCOVID-19 positive, the department said. The 70-year-old woman who was admitted to thegovernment hospital in Madurai died early Friday. The number of those discharged after recoverytoday witnessed a spike with at least 114 patients being senthome taking the total in the state to 866. Of the 72 cases, 26 constituted women while theremaining were men, with the youngest being a 11-year-old girland the oldest a 98-year-old man (both hailing fromChennai). As many as 13 people were suspected to be primarycontacts of the total 72, the bulletin said. Chennai continued to rank top with 452 positivecases among the districts followed by Coimbatore 141, Tiruppur110. Madurai and Salem recorded 56 and 30 cases,respectively. Incidentally, the government announced that thesefive districts would undergo complete lockdown till April 29as part of measures to control the spread of virus. The government has, hence, decided to tightencurbs under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 in select urbanregions based on expert opinion, Chief Minister K Palaniswamisaid in a statement. "The lockdown will be fully implemented in thecorporation areas of Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai from 6 amon April 26 till 9 pm on April 29," Palaniswami said addingSalem and Tirupur corporation zones will see similar completelockdown between Sunday 6 am and Tuesday (April 28) 9 pm. In all other districts of Tamil Nadu, the existingcurbs will continue to be in force, Palaniswami said andappealed to the people to fully cooperate to prevent thespread of COVID-19. (Eds: adding details, quotes of Minister) Chennai, May 14(): Two persons died due to COVID-19in Tamil Nadu, taking the death toll to 66 while 447 people,including a three-month-old girl, tested positive for thevirus on Thursday, state health minister C Vijaya Baskar said.With the fresh additions, the cumulative tally ofcoronavirus cases in the state touched 9,674, he said.After reporting more than 500 cases for nearly 10days, Tamil Nadu witnessed a slight dip in the number ofpositive cases registered.A bulletin issued by the health department said 64people were discharged after treatment on Thursday taking thetotal to 2,240 people till date. The Minister said the government has stepped up testingfacilities and as of Thursday 2,80,023 people were testedwhile the total number of samples was 2,91,432.Asking people not to panic over the spread ofcoronavirus, he said Covid-19 patients including thosediagnosed with cancer, besides HIV positive people weredischarged following treatment. He said 15 people, who require dialysis and two sufferingfrom liver failure, were also discharged from the Rajiv GandhiGovernment General Hospital (RGGGH) here. Their getting cured of the disease shows "the government isfully engaged in containing the spread of virus," he said. "Chief Minister ( K Palaniswami) is monitoring thesituation, giving directions to authorities on a daily basis,"Baskar said. The state's death rate stood at 0.67 per cent, he saidand credited the dedication of government doctors, nurses andhealth department workers for ensuring such a low figure. "Through proper testing, early diagnosis and clinicalmanagement we have reduced the death rate. Though it is very challenging for high risk patients,we have been able to discharge them after treatment," he said. Among those discharged were a 96-year-old personand a new born baby from the RGGGH, he said.The government was also engaged in auditing thedeaths among people who tested COVID-19 positive. "A Rapid Response Team has been formed to studyon how this disease spreads, its virulence and which agegroups are mostly affected. It will submit its report to chief secretary (KShanmugham)," he said.The team would comprise those from General andcommunity medicine and microbiologists, he said. Referring to the meeting chaired by Palaniswamiwith medical experts earlier in the day, he said the WorldHealth Organisation lauded the government for its approachvis-a-vis treatment of COVID-19 affected. WHO Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathanparticipated in the consultations through video-conferencingfacility. Among those infected on Thursday were 22 peoplewho had returned from Maharashtra, which tops the country'sCOVID-19 cases at 27,524. Two individuals who had returned from Qatar had alsotested positive, the government said. Number of active cases in Tamil Nadu was 7,365while there are 58 testing facilities which include 38government operated ones. Chennai constituted the major chunk of casesamong districts at 5,637 cases till date, followed byThiruvallur at 495, Chengalpattu (430) and Cuddalore which had413 infections. All 447 cases reported today were contacts,according to the Health department bulletin.Among the deceased on Thursday was a 45-year-oldwoman from Chennai who was also suffering from "diabetesmellitus, systematic hypertension" and also COVID-19 positive. She died due to acute "respiratory distresssyndrome." A 43-year-old man suffering from chronic kidneydisease, died due to "respiratory failure/pneumonia", thebulletin said.
