By Saumojyoti S Choudhury New Delhi, Aug 17 () In a first, this year's National Sports Awards ceremony is likely to be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with all the winners logging in from their respective places to hear their names being announced on August 29. The National Sports Day is celebrated on August 29, the birth anniversary of hockey wizard Dhyan Chand. "The sports awards function this year is likely to be an online function. As per the Government of India instructions, the awardees will also be announced on the morning of the day of the function," a Sports Ministry source told . The pandemic had in June forced the ministry to extend the deadline for submission of online applications for the awards. It also allowed athletes to self-nominate in view of the "difficulties" being faced by them in finding people who can recommend their names amid the lockdown. The self nomination has resulted in a huge number of applicants for the awards and it has been learnt that the ministry had already finished the initial round of screening. The National Sports Awards include the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the Arjuna Award, Dronacharya Award and the Dhyan Chand Award, which are conferred every year by the President of India at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 29. On the first day of the meeting on Monday, 13 and 15 candidates were recommended for the Dronacharya and Dhayan Chand Award respectively. National Sports Awards likely to be held virtually due to COVID-19 pandemic

By Saumojyoti S Choudhury New Delhi, Apr 26 () The process to pick this year's national sports awards has been delayed because of the nation-wide lockdown to combat COVID-19 pandemic and the applications will be invited next month, a Sports Ministry official told . The ministry generally invites the nominations for the awards in April while the ceremony to confer them is held on August 29 on the occasion of National Sports Day celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. But this year, the process is yet to start because of the pandemic, which has so far led to death of more than 800 people in the country and over 2 lakh globally. The official said the delay was inevitable considering the present circumstances. "The ministry is yet to issue the circular for National Sports Award applications. Generally, the process should have been completed by the month of April but this year the situation is unprecedented," the official said. "But hopefully the circular will be issued in May." The COVID-19 pandemic has brought all sporting activities to a standstill not just in the country but across the world. "Since the last one month all the offices in the country, including government establishments and those of NSFs (National Sports Federations), have been running from home, so the delay was bound to happen," he said. The National Sports Awards include Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the Arjuna, Dronacharya and Dhyanchand which were conferred every year by the President of India at the Rashtrapati Bhawan. However, that relationship soon turned sour. Only two days ago, Lamba <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/elections/assembly-elections/delhi/enraged-lamba-tries-to-slap-aap-member/articleshow/74035873.cms">allegedly</a> tried to slap an AAP member before being pulled back by the police at Majnu ka Tila. Lamba joined Congress in 1994 under the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). A year later, she won the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU). Her relationship with Congress ended up being a 20-year affair. However, when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was formed, Lamba quit Congress to join them on 26 December 2014. During the 2015 Delhi election, Lamba won in Chandi Chowk. However, after AAP lost in the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, she sought accountability from chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. Subsequently, she was removed from AAP’s official WhatsApp group of lawmakers. During the campaigning for the Lok Sabha election, Lamba refused to participate and refrained from playing a part in Kejriwal’s roadshow after she was asked to walk behind his car. Later in April, she was involved in a Twitter spat with AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj after he’d goaded her with a taunt to resign from the party. Another rough patch hit when Lamba raised objections against AAP’s decision to pass a resolution to revoke Rajiv Gandhi’s Bharat Ratna. Citing repeated disrespect, she quit the AAP in September 2019 — and went back to Congress.
