<keyword id="6355588" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajasthan">Rajasthan</keyword>, the desert state of India, emerged as the most attractive solar project destination in the country during the latest NTPC auction, which saw the winning bids falling to Rs 4.35-4.36 per kwH. 
 
There were 130 MW put up for auction, out of which 50 MW was won by Shapoorji Pallonji Infrastructure Capital and 60 MW by Mahindra Susten, while the remaining 20 MW was won by Prayatna Developers of the Adani Group. Both these companies offered to sell electricity produced from their projects at same price of Rs 4.35 per kwH, and Prayatna Developers’ offer was at Rs 4.36 per kwH.

These reverse auctions see the developer offering to sell electricity at the lowest price winning the auction. The last NTPC auction in Rajasthan saw Fortum Finnsurya winning a 70 MW project by bidding Rs 4.34 per kwH. However, in that auction, the land for the project was ensured at the Bhadla Solar Park in Jodhpur district, with the highest solar radiation in India. 
 
This time around, the winners are not being given any land. Instead, developers will find and develop the land themselves, probably the reason behind marginally higher tariffs.

This year has not seen too many developers taking interest in these auctions, with the Gujarat auction of 160 MW of capacity, which was held in late-June, drawing only three bidders. However, in the latest Rajasthan auction, the developers seem to have shed those apprehensions with 21 developers, including many of the top names in the business, taking part in it.

The reason could be cited to Rajasthan's inherent solar advantage, because of the high radiation that the state receives. The developers’ interest in this recent auction also shows that along with tariff, it also crucially depends on the project locations.

"Tata Power plans to have a renewable power portfolio of 10,000 MW in the state of Rajasthan in the next five years," a company statement said. Participating in the ongoing Invest Rajasthan summit in Jaipur, it stated that it plans to develop up to 8,000 MW of utility-scale projects, 1,000 MW of solar rooftops and 1,50,000 solar pumps in the next five years in the state. Tata Power, along with its fully-owned subsidiary <keyword id="12146018" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-power-solar" source="Orion">Tata Power Solar</keyword>, will expand its presence in the state to generate clean energy through solar power. The company employs more than 4,500 people in the state, and its expansion projects will generate employment for more than 6,000-8,000 people in the next five years. Rajasthan is an important state for Tata Power's renewable business. It presently has a portfolio of 4,939 MWp. To date, Tata Power has commissioned 2,066 MW in Rajasthan and around 2,873 MW capacity of solar projects are under construction, which will be completed in the next 12-24 months. TP Ajmer Distribution Ltd, a unit of Tata Power, has completed 5 years of operations and has enhanced the consumer experience in Ajmer. Tata Power has ensured safe and reliable supply in Ajmer and also achieved AT&amp;C (Aggregate Technical and Commercial) loss reduction from 22 per cent to 9 per cent. Tata Power through its rooftop services has a cumulative installed capacity of 65 MW in Rajasthan. The company has been doing extensive work for industrial belts like marble, granite and stone crushing etc in Rajasthan located in regions like Ajmer, Sirohi, Rajsamand, Jalore and Makrana. Through its various rooftop offerings, Tata Power has installed over 20 MW of rooftops for these industries. These installations have resulted in cumulative savings of about Rs 20 crore per annum for customers. Tata Power is also working towards setting up a robust EV charging infrastructure in the state to enable the faster transition towards electric mobility. The company has installed over 1,100 home chargers and 100 public chargers in Rajasthan. In the next few years, Tata Power plans to install 10,000 public EV charging points in the state. Tata Power mulls 10,000 MW clean energy capacity in next five years in Rajasthan

<keyword id="6367820" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Adani-Group">Adani Group</keyword> has joined hands with the Rajasthan government to set a10, 000 mw Solar Power plant. 
 
The company’s Renewable Energy department has signed a 50:50 joint venture that is estimated to be the largest such integrated facility in India. 
 
The park is pegged to attract investments worth over Rs. 60,000 Crore. It is said to include generation projects and a manufacturing unit for solar module, parts and equipment. The group itself plans to generate around 5,000 mw in the said solar park. 
 
The solar park is a part of the Rajasthan government’s plan to achieve 25,000 mw solar power capacities by 2022. It has claimed to set up 1, 00,000 mw of solar power by 2022.

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERN) has allowed 5.4 GW solar power project by Bhadla Solar Power, to get its safeguard duty back. This move will add to gains to the tune of 1.9-2.2% of the equity returns---basically the promoters and shareholders will make more profits. “Apart from benefiting affected projects, the reimbursement order provides much-needed clarity by emphasising a definite timeline for payments, and gives preference to the one-time payment mechanism,” said <keyword id="7854483" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ankit-hakhu">Ankit Hakhu</keyword>, Associate Director, <keyword id="6359483" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Crisil">CRISIL</keyword> Ratings. A report by CRISIL said that after the ruling, solar power producer will be compensated by law and will not have to wait for it for a year like the Bhadla park developer. The CERN ruling also directed Solar Energy Corporation of India and electricity distribution companies of <keyword id="6355588" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="rajasthan">Rajasthan</keyword> to compensate the developer of the Bhadla solar park project. The Duty Effect The order can change the way safeguard duty will affect solar power industry, since it was imposed in 2018. The move had shrunk solar power gains by 12-15%. “The safeguard duty had increased the cost of the solar projects by about 15% because the solar modules used in the projects were largely imported from China and this amounted to 60% of the total project cost,” the report said. CERN has classified the reimbursement of safeguard duty under ‘Change in law’ provision in the Bhadla solar park project. Solar power to get more profitable as power regulator lightens the safeguard duty burden

AdGreen Energy (<keyword id="4621631" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="agel" source="Orion">AGEL</keyword>), the renewables arm of the Adani Group, on Friday announced that its fourth wind-solar hybrid power plant at Jaisalmer in Rajasthan is fully operational and the asset has been capitalised. The combined operational generation capacity of this newly added hybrid power plant is 700 MW and has a power purchase agreement (PPA) at Rs 3.24/kwh for 25 years, according to a statement from the firm released on Friday. This new hybrid power plant consists of a combination of 600 MW solar and 510 MW wind plants. The company said its latest hybrid plant deploys advanced renewable technologies like bifacial solar PV modules and horizontal single-axis trackers (HSAT) systems to enable maximum electricity generation from solar energy. A bifacial panel can generate power from both sides, boosting overall electricity production. The plant is co-located and is designed to deliver capacity utilisation factor (CUF) of minimum 50 per cent, the highest CUF of any renewable project in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. The firm said the plant harnesses the potential of renewable energy by resolving intermittency of the generation and provides a more reliable solution to meet the rising power demand. With this, AGEL's operating wind-solar hybrid portfolio has now reached 2,140 MW, continuing to be the largest in the world, according to the company statement. With the successful operationalisation of the 700 MW plant, the world's largest wind-solar hybrid power plant, AGEL now has the largest operating renewable portfolio in India with 8,024 MW, <keyword id="4343578" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="adani-green" source="Orion">Adani Green</keyword> said on Friday. The plant is housed under AGEL's 100 per cent subsidiary -- Adani Hybrid Energy Jaisalmer Four Limited. "Earlier in May 2022, AGEL had operationalised India's first hybrid power plant of 390 MW," Adani Green said in the statement, adding that this was followed by the commissioning of the world's largest co-located hybrid power plant of 600 MW in September 2022 and the third hybrid power plant of 450 MW in December 2022. "All three of these hybrid energy generation assets are located in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan." Adani Green says its operating renewable portfolio reaches 8,024 MW, largest in India

New Delhi, Dec 11 () Clean energy firm ReNew Power on Wednesday said it has joined hands with South Korea-based GS E&amp;C for execution of its 300 MW solar power plant in Rajasthan.
 ReNew Power announced a joint venture partnership with South Korea based GS E&amp;C in this regard, a company statement said.
 ReNew Power will hold a 51 per cent equity under the partnership, while the balance will be held by GS E&amp;C.
 "I expect the partnership to set new benchmarks in the Indian renewable energy space and look forward to executing more projects together," ReNew Power's Chairman and MD Sumant Sinha said.
 The project is part of the capacity auctioned by Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) under its tranche-IV auctions concluded earlier this year.
 GS E&amp;C, is South Korea's leading construction and development firm and is part of the GS Group, with an asset base of over USD 58 billion.
 This partnership will mark the entry of GS E&amp;C in the Indian renewable energy sector.
 "GS E&amp;C and ReNew Power will continue to play an important role achieving the country's ambitious target for the transition to cleaner energy," said Huh Yun Hong, the president and head of new business division of GS E&amp;C.

Offshore wind farms coming soon The traditional, on-shore wind farms have been there for some time now and <keyword id="20154" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword> currently holds the pole position at 7,162.3 MW. But the <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword> is now setting up the <keyword id="1889999" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Offshore-Wind-Energy-Authority">National Offshore Wind Energy Authority</keyword> (NOWA) that will act as the nodal agency for offshore wind projects in the country. NOWA will carry out surveys and resource assessments in Exclusive Economic Zones and also sign contracts with companies for project development in the territorial water.

Jaipur, Mar 6 () Nearly 350 investors have submitted investment proposals worth over Rs 11,000 crore within three months of the launch of Rajasthan Investment Promotion Scheme 2019, a statement said. In a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Additional Chief Secretary-Industries Subodh Agrawal said nearly 350 investors have given investment proposals worth Rs 11,628 crore. The scheme was introduced in December last year to attract investors. The chief minister said Rajasthan was the only state in the country to take several policy initiatives in the form of a package to encourage industrialist at the time of economic slowdown. Apart from the investment promotion scheme, the government has also launched a new industrial development policy, Chief Minister's Small Scale Industries Promotion Scheme, as well as renewable energy policy. He asked the department officials to work with proactive approach to ensure maximum investment. "The state is emerging as a destination for investment. The state has potential in sectors like tourism, solar, mining and service sector," he said. 350 proposals worth over Rs 11k-cr received under Raj investment promotion scheme

<ul class="summary-list"><li>India is home to the world's largest solar farm.</li><li>Financing for the project was sparked by G8 countries of the Climate Investment Fund in 2008. </li></ul>As the world slowly moves toward renewable energy, one of the most complex dimensions of the transition is the obligation imposed upon developing countries, which also suffer some of the worst impacts of climate change. Why should emerging markets sacrifice growth to meet climate targets, when they were not the nations that caused the climate crisis in the first place? It's a point that India's prime minister, Narendra Modi, raised at the 2021 COP26 summit in Glasgow, Scotland. Modi pledged that India would hit net zero by 2070 — two decades many of the Western countries, and a decade later than China. At last week's COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, India affirmed that deadline.Meanwhile, the world's richest countries <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/19/climate/un-climate-damage-cop27.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">pledged</a> to contribute to a fund that would help developing countries deal with climate disasters. There's also good news about climate investment coming out of India. The largest solar farm in the world is located in Rajasthan, in the country's northeast. Since construction began in 2015, Bhadla Solar Park has slowly grown to cover an enormous 5,700-hectare desert site with solar panels. And today it generates enough electricity to power 4.5 million homes."There was very little experience in India, and there were no real airtight regulations that had been tested," said Mohua Mukherjee, an economist at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, who used to oversee the World Bank's Indian Solar Energy program."It was more on a conversational basis with a group of developers who said to the government, well, there's this wasteland lying around that belongs to the government," said Mukerjee. "So if you can declare it a solar park and let us put up our panels, we will sell electricity to you."<h2>Sustainable finance</h2>The park was built in four phases, with each field of solar panels larger than the last. The buildout happened so quickly thanks to the involvement of the Climate Investment Fund — alongside more general multilateral development banks — which was set up by the G8 countries specifically to cofinance climate-mitigation projects. "The way that we do that is by providing concessional resources," explained Daniel Morris, the clean energy lead at the fund. "That's finance that's really cheap, basically the cheapest money in the world, either through grants or, more often, heavily subsidized loans."With our $200 million we were able to mobilize $112 million in additional cofinancing just on this project, which has resulted in 5.6 million tonnes of CO2 reduced, and it has put 2.7 gigawatts of installed capacity on the ground."The goal of the fund is to provide finance for technologies that are on the edge of commercial viability, or require funding to reach scale, Morris said. Bhadla, unsurprisingly, was a case of the latter."This was about scale," said Morris. "Solar panels were commercially viable in 2013 in a lot of places, it was just that the cost of generation was not competitive in places like India, and in Rajasthan, the way coal was. But now the cost of technology has come down so much that it's incredibly viable."And the scale is paying off around the world. Today, solar is the cheapest form of energy the world has ever seen, according to <a href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2021/07/renewables-cheapest-energy-source/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">the International Renewable Energy Agency</a>, and the price of large-scale solar-panel deployment has fallen 85% in the past decade.<h2>Hiccups and learnings</h2>There is another important lesson from Bhadla that underscores how massive projects require careful logistical planning so the pieces fall into place at the right time."Phase one had a number of hiccups, which included the private-sector guys being ready with their panels, having taken loans, paying interest on those loans, and their power having nowhere to go because the evacuation arrangements weren't ready," Mukherjee said of building Bhadla."Evacuation" is an energy-industry term of art describing how generational projects need to be connected to a wider grid. And in India, this meant navigating the complex bureaucracy and politics of both the nationwide and regional electric grids."Transmission lines take about ten times as long to build as it takes to put up solar panels," Mukherjee said. "The sun was beating down on the panels and electricity was being generated, but it had nowhere to go."The good news is that these lessons were learned, and later phases took grid connections into consideration. As a result, India now has a fairly thriving solar industry, with the construction of numerous other plants, including the 750-megawatt Rewa plant, in Madhya Pradesh. As a result of the investment and development, India hit its 2022 20-gigawatt solar-installation target in 2018, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/productline/power-generation/india-achieved-solar-power-target-4-years-ahead-of-schedule-dst-advisor/articleshow/71078461.cms?from=mdr" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">four years earlier</a> than expected."I think it shows that when you make an effort to prioritize scale, things can ramp up very quickly," said Morris. "When you see technology costs dropping, sometimes precipitously like they have with solar panels, then the opportunity to do more just grows and grows."

New Delhi, Apr 7 () India could face over 21.6 per cent of 3 gigawatts (GW) of solar power and wind energy projects being delayed due to the nationwide lockdown imposed to check the spread of coronavirus, Wood Mackenzie said in a report.While wind projects would be hit by supply and labour disruptions in the peak season, solar photovoltaic (PV) installations are expected to be hit hard as the industry is heavily dependent on Chinese PV module imports, which have been disrupted due to coronavirus."Wood Mackenzie projects that India could face over 21.6 per cent or 3 gigawatts (GW) of solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind installations being delayed as a result of the country's lockdown," it said in the report.Wood Mackenzie principal analyst Robert Liew said: "The timing of the lockdown is unfortunate as Q1 is typically one of the busiest periods for wind project installations. The lockdown will delay some projects until summer, and if the lockdown is extended past April, wind farm construction could be further delayed into the monsoon season, where wind installations are typically at their lowest".With over 3 GW of wind projects under construction scheduled for 2020 completion, supply and labour disruptions from the current lockdown could delay 400 megawatts (MW) into 2021, equating to a downgrade of 11 per cent for 2020.Similar to the wind sector, India's solar PV installations is expected to be hit hard as the industry is heavily dependent on Chinese PV module imports (80 per cent of total volume) which has been disrupted due to the coronavirus."Current supply and labour disruptions will have an outsized negative impact on 2020 installations. Q1 is expected to be strongly impacted with a potential 60 per cent year-on-year quarterly downgrade, or 1.2 GW, down from about 3 GW in Q1 2019."We remain cautious on the outlook for the second half of the year as supply and logistics bottlenecks linger. Consequently, our full-year downgrade stands at 2.9 GW, a 24.8 per cent reduction resulting in a revised 2020 outlook of 8.9 GW of solar PV installations," Senior analyst Rishab Shrestha said.States with the highest coronavirus infection rates also correspond with the areas that are favourable to the wind and solar development.Gujarat delivered 58 per cent or 1.4 GW of newly added wind capacity in India in 2019 and is one of the top ten worst-hit states in terms of coronavirus infections.On the solar front, Karnataka (2.0 GW), Tamil Nadu (1.6 GW) and Rajasthan (1.7 GW) were the top three states accounting for 55 per cent of solar PV installations in 2019. All of which are in the top ten worst-hit states.Both analysts agree that current support measures by the government to mitigate the downturn are warranted, but if the virus situation continues to escalate and the lockdown is extended, there will be a severe financial impact on utility companies.Consequently, solar PV and wind installation developers' cash flows will also be affected, and corporate bank loans for new project development could slow to a trickle, the report added. India's renewables installation could fall by a fifth due to lockdown: Wood Mackenzie

In its bid to build a solar India, <keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras">IIT Madras</keyword> announced recently that it will be developing an efficient, cheap and clean way of power supply to villages using microgrids. For this, the institute has signed a MoU with power and automation technology company ABB India under government’s <keyword id="3873307" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="uchchatar-avishkar-yojana">Uchchatar Avishkar Yojana</keyword> scheme. 
 
They will be looking at developing a power management system to optimize the operation of multiple micro grids, with or without grid connection, to transmit electricity reliably to small villages. This system will also enable the integration of individual solar PV rooftops to the micro grid of a village. Such grid clusters are expected to have the capability of generating and using renewable energy locally from one kilowatt to a few hundred kilowatts. This inter-connection of micro grids with the existing distribution system will also help reduce outages and cut electricity costs. 
 
As of now, the government is looking at a generation capacity of 40 GW in the next five years through grid-connected solar photovoltaic rooftops and small scale solar PV plants. 
 
The project scope includes micro grids of 20 to 100 kW capacity equipped with battery storage. Detailed studies and simulation of the various system components along with related control and optimization logic, protection criteria, monitoring and communication will also be undertaken. 
 
"While India has set an ambitious target for solar energy generation, IIT Madras has been at the forefront in developing decentralised energy-efficient solar PV micro grid solutions tailored to meet India's urban, rural and off-grid power requirements," said Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director of IIT Madras. 
 Meanwhile, ABB India's managing director <keyword id="222145" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjeev-Sharma">Sanjeev Sharma</keyword> said - "In a country as huge and diverse as India, it is important to design models of integration with power management and load balancing for proven micro grids technology with the existing grid infrastructure." 
 
Interestingly, ABB’s Access to Electricity social initiative in India has already demonstrated significant impact in the country. 
 The company has brought <keyword id="70990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Solar-power">solar power</keyword> to 1,200 households in the Rajasthan desert and to over 100 households in the world’s largest delta region of the Sunderbans. This project follows two ongoing CSR projects with IIT-M; one for the design, installation and commissioning of a micro grid able to supply 50 kW power to a rural village, the other one to help establish and research the Center of Battery Engineering at IIT-M. 
 
ABB recently announced the setting up of India’s first solar-powered micro grid to provide uninterrupted power supply to its factories in Vadodara. 
 
With the slow but steady work by the institute, industry and the government, it seems India is not too far away from achieving its solar dream.

New Delhi, Feb 19 () India's solar energy capacity addition dipped 12 per cent to 7,346 megawatts (MW) in the calender year 2019 from 8,338 MW in 2018, according to a report by Mercom India Research. While 2019 was a lost year for the country's solar sector, Mercom India Research expects solar installations to rise by 17 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) to about 8,500 MW by the end of 2020. "The country installed 7,346 MW of solar in 2019, a 12 per cent decline year-over-year (YoY), compared to 8,338 MW installed in 2018," according to the report titled 'Q4 &amp; Annual 2019 India Solar Market Update'. It also estimates solar installations in the range of 65-70 gigawatt (GW) by 2022, based on the current market conditions. The government has set a solar installation target of 100 GW by 2022. The large-scale solar projects accounted for 85 per cent of installations with 6,242 MW in 2019 and saw a 7 per cent y-o-y fall, and rooftop solar made up the remaining 15 per cent adding 1,104 MW, a 33 per cent drop y-o-y. Karnataka was the top state for solar in 2019 with 1.8 GW, followed by Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu. Together, these three states accounted for almost 70 per cent of solar installations in 2019. "The demand outlook for 2020 looks better with a stronger project pipeline, and we should see the solar market resume y-o-y growth again," said Raj Prabhu, CEO of Mercom Capital Group in a statement. He also said that a lot will depend on the economy and lending situation getting back on track, the impact of coronavirus, and the outcome of the 20 per cent basic customs duty announced in the recent Budget. At the end of 2019, cumulative solar installations reached almost 35.7 GW. Large-scale projects accounted for 31.3 GW (87.6 per cent), whereas rooftop solar installations accounted for 4.4 GW (12.4 per cent). The large-scale solar project development pipeline stands at 23.7 GW, with 31.5 GW of projects tendered and pending auction at the end of the fourth quarter of 2019. The Indian solar market added 1,897 MW in the October-December 2019 period, a 12.8 per cent fall as compared with 2,177 MW installed in the preceding quarter. However, installations were up by 15.6 per cent compared to 1,641 MW installed in the fourth quarter of 2018. In the fourth quarter of 2019, large-scale solar projects came to 1,593 MW, while rooftop solar installations came to 304 MW, an increase of 24.1 per cent compared to 245 MW in the third quarter of 2019, it added . Multiple reasons led to the fall in large-scale solar additions in 2019 including elections, a slowing economy, liquidity issues, tariff caps, lack of financing, curtailment, payment delays, and power purchase agreements renegotiations in Andhra Pradesh. Rooftop installations declined for the first time in five years. The report pointed to the slowdown in the economy in 2019 as a significant factor, along with liquidity issues in the market following the NBFC crisis that made it difficult for installers to finance rooftop projects in a tough economy. "There are several challenges facing the industry but a few fixes, that could immediately turn around the sector, would be to remove tariff caps in reverse auctions, getting government agencies to make timely payments and facilitate lending to get the solar market moving in the right direction again," added Prabhu. After five consecutive years of decline, coal accounted for a majority of the power installations with 7.8 GW and made up 44.1 per cent of the installed capacity, followed by solar with 7.3 GW. Wind energy accounted for 2.4 GW followed by small hydro and other renewables with 154 MW and 82.5 MW, respectively.
