In a first, the Narendra <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword> is building an airport in Rajasthan where the airstrip will be used both as a runway and highway. 
 
The concrete track, Gadkari said, would be open to civilian traffic when there is no aircraft movement and would be shut for vehicles when a plane is landing or taking off. He did not disclose where in Rajasthan was the airport being built. 
 
The minister added that similar projects were being planned in hilly and border areas of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Tripura, which would be built with aid from defence authorities. 
 The government is working on ways to boost regional air connectivity in the country. In new civil aviation policy, the <keyword id="3119605" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Regional-Connectivity-Scheme">Regional Connectivity Scheme</keyword> (RCS) has been mooted that provides for various concessions to airlines. 
 
Under the scheme, air ticket prices would be capped at Rs 2,500 for one-hour flights on unserved and under-served routes. There are 394 unserved and 16 underserved airports in the country. As part of the RCS, the government plans to provide a Viability Gap Funding, which would be financed through the Regional Connectivity Fund.

Rajasthan to be the first airport runway in India to double as a highway

In a shocking report that highlights safety concerns in India's rapidly expanding aviation sector, two <keyword id="3182452" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IndiGo-pilots">Indigo pilots</keyword> recently attempted to land their plane on a road which they mistook for a runway. The <keyword id="46616" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indigo-flight">IndiGo flight</keyword> from Ahmedabad in Gujarat to Jaipur in Rajasthan was close to touching down until the pilots were alerted by a "too low terrain" warning in the cockpit, the company said in a statement. 

	"The captain in command immediately took a precautionary measure and carried a go-around. The aircraft landed safely on subsequent approach," added the statement. 
 

	The incident reportedly happened on February 27 but has only just come to light in Indian media. 
 <keyword id="6354706" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indigo">IndiGo</keyword> said the pilots were made aware of their mistake by an enhanced ground proximity warning system, which alerts the cockpit if the plane is in danger of flying into the ground or hitting something. 

	"At no time was safety compromised. Both pilots have been taken off flight duty with immediate effect, pending investigation," said the statement. 
 

	"The matter was duly reported to the (aviation regulator) Directorate General of Civil Aviation by IndiGo flight safety department," IndiGo added.

A proposal to construct runways on highways stretches is being worked upon by the <keyword id="397335" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="road-transport-and-highway-ministry">Road Transport and Highway Ministry</keyword> along with the <keyword id="43909" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Defence-ministry">Defence Ministry</keyword> and 22 stretches have been identified. 
 "There are proposals to develop highway stretches in such a fashion that they may double up as airstrips. This will provide connectivity in difficult places," said Road Transport Minister <keyword id="26680" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nitin-gadkari">Nitin Gadkari</keyword>. 
 
Gadkari confirmed his ministry will be meet officials of the defence ministry and will strengthen the base of the proposal. According to reports, a committee has been formed comprising members from both the ministries. 
 
The committee will overlook on the specifications such as viability, length and breadth of the highway stretches, etc. 
 Gadkari also mentioned about construction of such an airstrip, which can also be termed as an airport, in <keyword id="6355588" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajasthan">Rajasthan</keyword> when these airstrips can be used for landing and take-off when it is closed and traffic can be restored later. He also said similar projects will be implemented in <keyword id="46408" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arunachal-Pradesh">Arunachal Pradesh</keyword>, Meghalaya and few other districts.

<ul><li>The Bikaner based ethnic snacks player says that its QSR strategy will play out in the next 18-24 months.</li><li><keyword id="1872606" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bikaji" source="Orion">Bikaji</keyword> says that it’s using pricing and other promotional means to push competition from regional and local players.</li><li>The company plans to expand geographically and is also eyeing exports and intends to keep up with double digit volume growth for the next ten years. </li></ul>While its closest competitor Haldiram’s is expanding its quick service restaurant (QSR) chain, recently-listed Bikaji is choosing to go slow and steady. The ethnic snacks player says that it has a plan in place but will play out its QSR strategy over the next 18-24 months. “For a successful QSR, we need a strong base kitchen because you cannot have different quality in each restaurant. Consistency is very important,” Rishabh Jain, CFO of Bikaner told Business Insider India, in an interview. The company already has two such restaurants in Mumbai, but it wants to build its base before it expands it into a chain. “In Bikaner, we are coming up with a frozen plant and once it’s commissioned in three to six months, we will hold trials of all the foods and roll out our plan,” Jain says. Restaurants, especially QSRs use frozen and ready-to-cook food to deal with supply chain disruptions and keep its taste and quality standardised across the chain. It plans to expand its QSR business with restaurants in nearby areas like Rajasthan, initially. But it believes that this route of growth has a long play in the markets. “QSR is a big market and people are experimenting with new products. But, like most of its peers, the company is also seeing a resurgence of smaller, local and unorganised players eating into the market. The snacks market has always been replete with unorganised, regional and local players. In the last 5-6 years they have been hit by GST, Covid and last year it was high inflation. Now that inflation is cooling off, they’re mushrooming back. Bikaji believes that they’ve been able to beat some of it with its wide product mix and pricing strategy. “Consumers are always willing to pay a premium for national brands but the premium shouldn't be too much. For the first time, we have a 10% off on our flagship brand Bikaneri Bhujia. This will reward our loyal customers, recruit competition and push back unorganised players,” says Manoj Verma, COO of Bikaji said in the interview. The company has passed on all the economies of wheat and oil prices cooling back to its customers. But in the long-term, the company believes that high competition in the segment is a norm. “Competition will always be there and we have to learn to live with it,” Verma added. And, 70% of our business is coming from three states. So, we have all of India ahead of us and export is also a good opportunity,” says Jain. For the last ten years, its volumes have been growing at a 20% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR). It intends to keep up with double digit growth for the next ten years. “Our target is to grow ahead of the category,” Verma adds. Bikaji in no rush to take a big bite of restaurant biz, focus stays on snacks for now

Photo Credits: Times of India <ul><li>India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will set up 13 emergency landing airstrips including 11 strips on the its <keyword id="6373156" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-highways">national highways</keyword>. </li><li>The road runway is aimed at providing faster transport services via air during <keyword id="470423" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="natural-calamities">natural calamities</keyword> that block the rail and road connectivity. </li><li>The first such strip will be set up in Gujarat on National Highway number 151.</li></ul>India’s is planning to <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/infrastructure/roadways/national-highways-to-have-11-emergency-airstrips-here-are-details/1386881/">set up emergency landing</a> airstrips on 11 national highways across the country. The move is aimed at easing efforts during natural calamities and emergency situations. The government has prepared a standard design for the road runway. The airstrips will span over 5-6 kilometres on a 60-metre wide concrete road. They will have parking slots for four aircraft, two gates at either ends of the strip and an Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower. The road runways are aimed at reaching out to the affected areas in the fastest possible time in case of natural calamities such as earthquakes or floods when air connectivity is the only viable option.The government plans to remove the hindrance caused by the electric poles, trees and dividers. According to the country’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the landing airstrips will cost about ₹836.6 million. The project will be managed by the Indian Air Force (IAF), India’s Ministry of Defence and its transport ministry. Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/economy/logistics/country-to-have-11-emergency-landing-air-strips-on-national-highways-mandaviya/article25538114.ece">reportedly</a> said that the first such strip will be set up in Gujarat on National Highway number 151 near Khambhaliya of Devbhumi Dwarka district. Mandaviya also said that the government has potentially identified 13 roads across seven states that can have emergency landing.
