Gokul Rajaram is Product Engineering Lead at Square. He was most recently the Product Director of Ads at Facebook, and the Product Management Director for Google AdSense. He recently joined LivSpace as its Special Advisor. Business Insider India caught up with him just when he was beginning his day in San Francisco. 
 
1) What led you to join Livspace? 
I joined Livspace because of the founding team. The team compliments each other very well, right from Anuj the founder and CEO to Ramakant and Shagufta of Space Matrix. Livspace helps one design home better; the very concept excited me. 
 
2) What’re the unique internet trends you see in India? 
Food, shelter, clothing and transportation are some of the basic necessities for people. The Internet is helping solve problems in all aspects of human life. Indian companies understand the specific needs of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=consumers">consumers</a> in India and are designing products accordingly. 
 
US based <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=e-commerce">e-commerce</a> giants like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Amazon">Amazon</a> are competing with Indian companies because they are many untapped opportunities here in India with the growth of Internet. 
 
3) What are the current challenges for Indian e-commerce companies? 
One is definitely logistics - the ability to transport goods from the warehouse to the drop location. One has to ensure last mile logistics. The second is payment - there is a lot of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cash+on+delivery">cash on delivery</a> (COD) in India as compared to other payment channels like debit and credit cards or the use of wallets. The third would be how to encourage the merchants, i.e. the sellers to sell more products online. 
 
Demographics and the usage of mobile define the gap among e-commerce sites when it comes to fashion and other product verticals. 
 
4) What is India’s e-commerce population like? 
A large section of the online population is in the age group of 18 to 25. They are also the largest users of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=smartphones">smartphones</a>. These people increase the mobile engagement of buying products online. In years to come every household will start using mobile to engage in online shopping. 
 
5) What are the current product innovations you’re planning at Square? 
We at Square are looking at consumer friendly solutions in the payments sector. We are currently building products which will enable easier payments methods through debit and credit cards.

Rajaram: Every household will start using mobile

<keyword id="2349466" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sanjaya-Rajaram">Sanjaya Rajaram</keyword>, a 71-year-old <keyword id="2355968" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="crop-scientist">crop scientist</keyword>, was named as the recipient of the 2014 <keyword id="753977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="World-Food-Prize">World Food Prize</keyword>. He was awarded $250,000 as prize by <keyword id="2355959" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nobel-Peace-Prize-laureate-Norman-Borlaug">Nobel Peace Prize laureate Norman Borlaug</keyword>. 
 Rajaram, who was born in a small village in <keyword id="6357713" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh">Uttar Pradesh</keyword>, began research work with Borlaug in 1969. He successfully crossed varieties of winter and spring wheat with his own plant breeding techniques. This led to the development of plants that have higher yields and dependability under a wide range of environments. 
 The <keyword id="9662" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Scientist">scientist</keyword>, who is a citizen of <keyword id="3746" type="COUNTRY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Mexico">Mexico</keyword>, is credited with developing 480 varieties of wheat that have been released in 51 countries. 
 “It’s a great honour. I am honoured that the <keyword id="2355960" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="World-Food-Prize-committee">World Food Prize committee</keyword> has recognized me for the work I have done,” said Rajaram. According to him, the next big challenge is developing plants with more drought tolerance, staving off the effects of salt water intrusion as oceans rise and other issues related to climate change. 
 Rajaram expanded upon his mentor Borlaug’s work with his own achievements, said <keyword id="1297326" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="World-Food-Prize-Foundation">World Food Prize Foundation</keyword> president <keyword id="2355967" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Kenneth-Quinn">Kenneth Quinn</keyword>. 
 
“His breakthrough breeding technologies have had a far-reaching and significant impact in providing more food around the globe and alleviating world hunger,” said Quinn. 
 Quinn said it’s fitting that the prize be awarded to Rajaram as the Des Moines-based organization celebrates the centennial of Borlaug’s 1914 birth in Cresco, Iowa. Borlaug, who won the 1970 Nobel for boosting agricultural production in what has become known as the <keyword id="50335" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Green-Revolution">Green Revolution</keyword>, launched the World Food Prize in 1986. 
 The foundation also added Rajaram’s new varieties can be grown in marginal areas, such as small <keyword id="6439698" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="40" keywordseo="mountain">mountain</keyword> plots in Pakistan, remote areas in China and in the acidic soils of Brazil. Rajaram said he plans to give some of the money from the prize to private organisations in India who work with the poor and the remaining money could be used for plant breeding research.

Mind you, when we say half-a-dozen, we are not exaggerating – here is the complete list of six – <keyword id="6375259" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Manjunath">Manjunath</keyword>, <keyword id="2178404" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Koyelaanchal">Koyelaanchal</keyword>, <keyword id="1835898" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hawaa-Hawaai">Hawaa Hawaai</keyword>, <keyword id="2069848" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mastram">Mastram</keyword>, <keyword id="2093570" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Yeh-Hai-Bakrapur">Yeh Hai Bakrapur</keyword> and finally, <keyword id="1276718" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Khwaabb">Khwaabb</keyword>. There is just one common factor here – all of them turn out to be pretty intriguing, irrespective of the sluggish response at the <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword>. 
 
Manjunath: Bitter to the end 
Our first choice is Manjunath, a biopic directed and co-produced by <keyword id="2239399" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sandeep-A-Varma">Sandeep A. Varma</keyword>, which tells the true story of the <keyword id="6354412" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="indian-oil">Indian Oil</keyword> <keyword id="6420527" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="executive">executive</keyword> <keyword id="479971" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Manjunath-Shanmugam">Manjunath Shanmugam</keyword> and his fight against the <keyword id="425101" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="oil-mafia">oil mafia</keyword> of Uttar Pradesh. The murder of this IIM braveheart for his whistleblowing act is still considered a national tragedy, but Varma’s kind of docu-drama unfolds a dark reality that’s too chilling and too gut-wrenching to give way to tears. The movie meanders at times, but the protagonist, brilliantly played by newcomer <keyword id="2239401" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sasho-Satish-Saarthy">Sasho Satish Saarthy</keyword>, takes you to a world where <keyword id="46183" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Corruption">corruption</keyword> is a way of life. However, the verdict at the domestic box office has been harsh and Manjunath only managed to nett around Rs 1 crore after Day 4 while debut day earnings were a paltry Rs 15-20 lakh. 
 
Koyelaanchal: Look what’s unearthed 
The second flick under scanner is Koyelaanchal, produced and directed by <keyword id="1235537" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ashu-Trikha">Ashu Trikha</keyword>. After <keyword id="486655" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gangs-of-Wasseypur">Gangs of Wasseypur</keyword> and <keyword id="6427325" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gunday">Gunday</keyword>, it is the latest from Bollywood on the exploits of the <keyword id="85025" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="coal-mafia">coal mafia</keyword> and had a huge release, especially in single screens. But the film tripped at the box office and collected about Rs 45 lakh on the opening day. Although official numbers are yet to come in, total earnings spanning the first three days are a little below Rs 2 crore, as per industry estimates. 
 
In Koyelaanchal, we again come face to face with all-pervading corruption and criminal use of natural resources. This time, it is the coal <keyword id="2239403" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mafioso-Saryubhan-Singh">Mafioso Saryubhan Singh</keyword> aka Maalik (<keyword id="6430614" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vinod-Khanna">Vinod Khanna</keyword>), who rules the mines of the <keyword id="2239414" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bihar-Jharkhand-belt">Bihar-Jharkhand belt</keyword> and locks horns with <keyword id="6359011" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="District-Collector">district collector</keyword> <keyword id="2239402" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nisheeth-Kumar">Nisheeth Kumar</keyword> (<keyword id="7646" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="suniel-shetty">Suniel Shetty</keyword>) when he raises troublesome questions. <keyword id="819709" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="the-script">The script</keyword> goes haywire at times, but the USP here happen to be the thorough research and the realistic take at a time when a multi-billion-dollar Coalgate scam has deeply shaken the nation. 
 
 
 
Mastram: Morality decoded 
Next comes Mastram, again an offbeat movie that deals with a sexually repressed society and its ingrained hypocrisy. A <keyword id="41623" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Directorial-debut">directorial debut</keyword> by <keyword id="1628796" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Akhilesh-Jaiswal">Akhilesh Jaiswal</keyword>, it is the story of the <keyword id="2239404" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="failed-author">failed author</keyword> <keyword id="201974" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajaram">Rajaram</keyword> (<keyword id="2102195" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rahul-Bagga">Rahul Bagga</keyword>) whose work gets rejected because they lack masala. But the man finally excels as he starts writing erotica and along with that, begins a painful <keyword id="6374782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="journey">journey</keyword> of self-realisation. Made on a budget of around Rs 2 crore, this ‘fictional biography’ had collected around Rs 75 lakh on the opening day at the domestic box office and its earnings stood at a little over Rs 3 crore after the first Monday. 
 
Hawaa Hawaai: Breezy &amp; smooth-flowing 
Back again after <keyword id="63220" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Stanley-Ka-Dabba">Stanley Ka Dabba</keyword> (well, that one grossed a little over Rs 5 crore), director-writer <keyword id="91815" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amol-Gupte">Amol Gupte</keyword>’s <keyword id="2239418" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Commercial-entertainer">commercial entertainer</keyword> Hawaa Hawaai has been produced by <keyword id="106474" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Fox-Star-Studios">Fox Star Studios</keyword> and hopes to do better this time. The movie netted around Rs 4.25 crore in the first three days and had an estimated budget of Rs 6 crore. 
 True to his pet genre, Gupte is still catering to the young audience and telling a simple tale with a touching innocence that will win every heart. But the emotional outing and catch-my-dream theme are fraught with grim realities as well. <keyword id="2234714" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Arjun-Harishchandra-Waghmare">Arjun Harishchandra Waghmare</keyword> (Amol’s son <keyword id="678010" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Partho-Gupte">Partho Gupte</keyword>) is a migrant <keyword id="6377229" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Child-labour">child labour</keyword> who toils hard at a roadside restaurant in Mumbai but wants to become a <keyword id="2239398" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="champion-roller-skater">champion roller-skater</keyword>. That’s not too difficult when the <keyword id="2239405" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="kind-hearted-coach">kind-hearted coach</keyword> <keyword id="6369280" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lucky">Lucky</keyword> (<keyword id="684700" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Saqib-Saleem">Saqib Saleem</keyword>) is willing to help and his poor but large-hearted peers are keen to support him as much as they can. Overall, a thought-provoking movie that flows smoothly without too many hitches. 
 
 
 
Endnote 
The other two releases of the week are Yeh Hai Bakrapur and Khwaabb. The former is a many-layered socio-political satire, starring <keyword id="124285" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anshuman-Jha">Anshuman Jha</keyword> and <keyword id="1810577" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Asif-Basra">Asif Basra</keyword> (plus, <keyword id="2239416" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shah-Rukh-the-goat">Shah Rukh the Goat</keyword>) and directed by <keyword id="468251" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Janaki-Vishwanathan">Janaki Vishwanathan</keyword>. The scathing attack on blind faith, punctuated with sharp wit, makes it an amply watchable movie. Khwaabb (directed by <keyword id="537936" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zaid-Ali-Khan">Zaid Ali Khan</keyword>), on the other hand, is a sports-based romance-drama starring <keyword id="1280175" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Navdip-Singh">Navdip Singh</keyword> and <keyword id="708963" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Simer-Motiani">Simer Motiani</keyword>. In spite of some interesting scripts, both movies failed to impact the domestic box office – each collecting a little over Rs 1 crore after the third day. 
 But don’t worry too much even if there has been a box office debacle for some time now. <keyword id="14509" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rajinikanth">Rajinikanth</keyword>’s <keyword id="1849408" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kochadaiiyaan">Kochadaiiyaan</keyword> is due to be released in a couple of weeks and that will surely set the box office ringing while <keyword id="2239419" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mainstream-movie-fans">mainstream movie fans</keyword> go crazy about thalaiva.

Box Office Falters But
Tales Of Corruption, Turbulence Make Their Mark In Bollywood

He was joined by Twitter Senior Director of Product Revenue Kevin Weil and Google VP of Display Advertising Products Neal Mohan.
They all agreed that ads these days need to be cross-platform and work well on PCs, tablets, and even wearable devices like Google Glass. But they had different ideas of how to measure the success of a digital marketing campaign.
Ads these days are measured by impressions (how many ads served up), clicks (how many people click), and conversions (how many people buy). Those are good as far as they go, Google's Mohan said, but specifically measuring what brands care about is still a huge obstacle. 
Facebook's Rajaram suggests that companies should focus less on engagement and clicks, and more on how people are being exposed to ads because "there's really no correlation between clicks and whether people actually convert."
Studies have shown that even if people don't click on ads, just seeing the ad will influence a future purchase, similar to way ads work on television. This is called "demand-generation," which aims to plant ideas in your head and doesn't intend to elicit an immediate response.
Rajaram went on to say that digital advertising just doesn't work very well.
"For the last decade, the model has been broken," Rajaram said. "We need to move towards a more sophisticated, multi-touch model and figure out how to accrue value at each touch point."

This year's winners were announced at a gala on Tuesday, and Rajaram was so surprised he won that a security guard became concerned."He was worried that I'd just faint there and then," Rajaram told Business Insider.The 17-year old Phillips Exeter Academy student created a project around improving the speed and accuracy of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/v7-raises-a-33-million-series-a-to-help-teams-build-ai-models-2022-11">computer vision models</a>, which he told Business Insider can function as mysteriously as ChatGPT."If you ask it a question and it gives you an answer, you don't actually know what happens in between these steps," he said of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-ai-chatbots-like-chatgpt-work-explainer-2023-7">the chatbot</a> adding that, "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chatgpt-may-make-up-facts-openai-cto-mira-murati-says-2023-2">problems can lie lurking</a> within these models" that eventually go on to make mistakes.Understanding more about how an algorithm gets from input to output will not only make it faster but safer, Rajaram said. And since machine learning is the foundation for AI, Rajaram's project could make AI smarter and faster, too.<h2>Building faster, safer AI</h2>When humans <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/queen-mary-neural-network-sketch-recognition-pictionary-2015-7">look at an image</a>, a cluster of neurons in your brain will light up in response, Rajaram said. "The same thing happens in these computer vision models."So how does a computer tell the difference between a car and a cat? If the model is looking at a cat, it might begin by focusing on the ears, nose, and whiskers — key features that distinguish it from a car.This thought process can be broken down into, what are called, circuits — the part of a model responsible for detecting different parameters.Typically, if you want to find a specific circuit in a computer's brain, you have to do it manually, Rajaram said."But this is extremely, extremely impractical, especially as models get bigger to the billions of parameters," he added. So, he built an algorithm to automate the process, for a smarter, faster model.One part of Rajaram's project involved looking at an open-source model that can read text from images. That ability makes it vulnerable to a "very, very strange adversarial attack," Rajaram said.If an image of a red traffic light is next to text that says green, the model would often classify it as a green traffic light. "Models doing these misclassification errors is certainly problematic," he said.Rajaram was able to isolate the model's text reading capability and remove it, "repairing this attack and protecting" it against that specific failure, he said.<h2>Beating out 2,000 competitors</h2>Participation in Regeneron Science Talent Search has grown and shrunk over the years, reaching its peak in the late 1960s during the Apollo missions. This year had the highest number of applicants since that decade, Maya Ajmera, the Society's president and CEO, told Business Insider.Scientists and engineers evaluated over 2,000 applications and narrowed them down to the top 300. "These 300 scholars are the top scientists and engineers," Ajmera said. A panel of about 20 then selected the top 40 finalists.Unlike with a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/high-school-science-fair-brain-implant-algorithm-battery-life-2023-12">science fair</a>, STS judges focused on candidates' achievements beyond their projects. They asked students with physics projects biology questions, for example. A 17-year-old took home $250,000 for his award-winning discovery in computer 'brains' that could make AI smarter and safer

<keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> leads globally in adopting Gen<keyword id="6355999" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ai" source="Orion">AI</keyword> technologies as a vast percentage of organisations incorporate <keyword id="17930214" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GenAI" source="Orion">GenAI</keyword> in operations, and a majority of the populace expects increased investments and budget allocations towards Gen AI in the next 2-3 years, according to a recent report. Search analytics firm Elastic on Monday released the Generative AI Report that gathered insights from 3,200 IT decision-makers and influencers across sectors in the US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. In the Asia Pacific and Japan region, 1,200 were surveyed, including 300 from India. According to the report, 81 per cent of Indian organisations have already implemented GenAI, making India the leader in adopting generative artificial intelligence technologies. The study also predicted promising investment trends in near future, with about 94 per cent of respondents anticipating increased investments and budget allocations towards GenAI initiatives in the next 2-3 years. However, almost all of the respondents expressed concerns about processing and using their data. "As many as 99 per cent of respondents expressed concerns about processing and using their data, highlighting the need for organisations to work with GenAI providers who can help safeguard sensitive information. The report further observed that 73 per cent of respondents in India were confident that conversational data search capabilities would significantly enhance operational efficiency. "The disruptive potential of GenAI has captured the imaginations and budgets of India's IT and data leaders, as seen by India's lead in <keyword id="20292786" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="GenAI-adoption" source="keywords">GenAI adoption</keyword>," said Karthik Rajaram, area vice president and general manager, India, Elastic. "However, while the commitment of many organisations to quickly harness the transformative opportunity of GenAI to drive innovation and efficiency is exciting, it's businesses that adopt search-powered GenAI grounded by business context that will lead and uncover the insights needed to securely innovate, build more efficient businesses, and pioneer new customer experiences." The party elected him as the leader after the demise of Karunanidhi. Now Stalin also heads the opposition in the state assembly. Stalin is seen fervently pursuing the election campaign to become the chief minister of the state for the first time in his life. Stalin and Kolathur constituency Kolathur seat was born in 2011 after the reorganisation of constituencies. Right from the first election the constituency faced, Stalin’s name has been figuring on the ballot paper for DMK in all the elections. The compelling reason for Stalin to choose Kolathur constituency is the fact that this had proved to be a strong bastion for DMK. In the 2016 assembly elections, Stalin won from here scoring 91,303 votes. His winning margin was 37,730 votes, which made up around 22.42 per cent of the total number of votes the people casted. Over the past 10 years, he has nurtured this constituency with a lot of developmental activities. Kolathur constituency has the advantage of a sizeable Muslim population. The large middle class and lower middle class segment here also favors DMK. Stalin enjoys a strong support of the Muslim groups and left unions. Stalin’s wife Durga is also seen actively campaigning for his husband as well as for the party. A worthy opponent for Stalin Aadi Rajaram is the South Chennai North (East) district secretary of the AIADMK. In the 2006 elections, he faced Stalin in the Thousand Lights constituency. Stalin could win him with a thin margin of 2,468 votes. This is one of the reasons why AIADMK has decided to field Aadi Rajaram against Stalin in Kolathur now. The main dietary difference between vegetarians and vegans is the latter eat no animal products, including dairy, eggs, honey, and gelatin. Many vegans also avoid animal products to take a stand against <a href="https://www.vegansociety.com/go-vegan/why-go-vegan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">animal cruelty and exploitation</a>. <h2>Benefits of a vegan and plant-based diet</h2>Rajaram says that many studies show that <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3662288/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vegan and plant-based eating can improve health</a>. Major health benefits include:Weight control: The types of foods that vegans eat, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes, are <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5466942/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">high in fiber and health-protective phytonutrients</a>. Rajaram says eating plant foods that are nutrient-dense can help increase satiety or fullness and can even lead to weight loss. A <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3701293/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2013 study</a> found that a group following a vegan diet for 18 weeks lost about 9.5 pounds whereas the control group lost less than a pound. In addition, a <a href="https://journals.lww.com/jhypertension/Abstract/9000/The_effect_of_plant_based_dietary_patterns_on.96871.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2020 analysis of studies</a> found that plant-based diets lower blood pressure. Longevity: All of the health benefits of a vegan diet, including weight control and lower cholesterol and blood pressure, also lead to a lower risk of dying from heart disease, according to a <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/JAHA.119.012865">2019 study</a>. Research has also shown that vegan diets may even lead to a reduction in the <a href="https://www.aicr.org/cancer-prevention/food-facts/vegan-diet/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">risk of getting cancer</a>.<h2>Vegan diet risks and disadvantages</h2>"There are two ways that a vegan diet can be unhealthy," says Rajaram. "One way is by eating processed foods, like potato chips and soda. They are plant-based but are not '<a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-get-protein-as-a-vegan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">whole foods</a>,' which make up a healthy vegan diet. The second way a vegan diet can be unhealthy is to not get the appropriate nutrients your body needs, even if you're eating a whole-food-based vegan diet."The best way to tackle these challenges is to work with a registered dietitian, says Rajaram, especially if you've never eaten a primarily plant-based diet.Here are some ways Palmer helps clients incorporate important nutrients like B12 and vitamin D into their meal plans:<ul><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/vitamin-b12-benefits" target="_blank" rel="noopener">B12</a> is necessary for healthy brain function and the formation of red blood cells. "All vegans should worry about this, because<a href="https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminB12-HealthProfessional/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> B12 comes from animal products</a>, and too little B12 can lead to negative <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22221769/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">neurological effects</a>," says Palmer. While there are some <a href="https://www.insider.com/b12-foods-vegan" target="_blank" rel="noopener">foods fortified with B12</a>, most vegans should take supplements, she says. Her recommended dose: 1,000 micrograms of B12 two times per week or 250 micrograms daily. </li><li><a href="https://www.insider.com/vitamin-d-benefits" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Vitamin D</a> is important for bone health, as well as many other benefits, including possibly <a href="https://www.jamda.com/article/S1525-8610(18)30579-6/pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reducing depression</a>. Vegans can get Vitamin D from moderate sun exposure, fortified plant-based milk, such as almond or soy milk, as well as <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6213178/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">from mushrooms exposed to light</a>, says Palmer. "Almost everyone is short on this, no matter what type of diet they follow," says Palmer. Similarly, she says, if you have digestive conditions that are triggered by high fiber consumption, you may have difficulty with a plant-based diet.On a practical level, you may experience some difficulties making vegan food. Yet finding vegan ingredients is easier than ever. "We're so lucky that today you can find vegan food alternatives, like veggie burgers, vegan butter, and plant-based milks, at your local supermarket," says Palmer. Many items require little or no cooking or additional preparation, she says. For a family that doesn't embrace vegan eating, "try modifying family favorite recipes, like lasagna, or start meatless Mondays and make a veggie pizza," says Palmer. Not all of Palmer's family members are vegan, and sometimes they grill their own piece of fish or chicken to accompany plant-based foods.<h2>Insider's takeaway</h2>Choosing a vegan diet is a great way to maximize your chances of leading a long and healthy life. New Delhi, Mar 27 () Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) on Friday said it has been able to exhaust its entire BS-IV stock before the March 31 deadline. The company said that only a small number of BS-IV units is left with dealers. Despite considerable headwinds in the market including the ongoing slump in the commercial vehicle (CV) industry and the challenges presented by the ongoing lockdown, the company was able to beat the March 31 deadline for final registration of BS-IV vehicles, DICV said in a statement. The company has cleared BS-IV stock with zero units left in the factory and less than a handful of vehicles left at dealers nationwide, it added. "From the beginning, we fully believed in the necessity of BS-VI as a way of creating a greener future for India. This made us proactive in developing BS-VI technology so we could discontinue BS-IV as quickly as possible," DICV Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Satyakam Arya said. The company said it has less than a handful of BS-IV trucks left at its dealerships. "As we approach the March 31 deadline, we have less than a handful of BS-IV trucks left at our dealerships. Like our customers and the rest of the Indian public, we are looking forward to moving into the next stage of our future -- BS-VI," DICV Vice-President (Marketing and Sales) Rajaram Krishnamurthy said. In current circumstances, any BS-IV stock left with dealers after March 31 would be as good as scrap since it would not be possible to get such vehicles registered.
