India’s cricket body, the BCCI, named <keyword id="6354486" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Virat-Kohli">Virat Kohli</keyword> as next captain for ODI and T20 cricket teams. 
 Kohli was named India’s cricket team after <keyword id="6354832" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="MS-Dhoni">MS Dhoni</keyword> stepped down from captaincy. However, Dhoni will still remain a member of the Indian cricket team. 
 
Kohli will lead Indian team for the three-match ODI and T20I series against England. 
 <keyword id="351" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yuvraj-Singh">Yuvraj Singh</keyword> also made a comeback in the team. 
 
“Yuvraj Singh has performed well at the domestic level and we must appreciate that,” said MSK Prasad, Chief Selector, BCCI. 
 
“We have selected the best possible team which can give us the best possible result,” added Prasad. 
 
India is scheduled to play the first ODI of the three-match series on January 15 at Pune.

Virat Kohli takes over as ODI, T20 captain

The All-India Senior Selection Committee has finally announced the names of the players who would be part of India’s squad for the 2015 World Cup.
 According to a BCCI press release, <keyword id="6354832" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="MS-Dhoni">MS Dhoni</keyword> will lead the 15-member squad in ICC CWC 2015. Other members of the squad are: <keyword id="6354486" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Virat-Kohli">Virat Kohli</keyword> (Vice Captain), Ajinkya Rahane, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Stuart Binny, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Ambati Rayudu, Axar Patel, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Md. Shami, Umesh Yadav, and Ishant Sharma. Sadly, senior players like <keyword id="351" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Yuvraj-Singh">Yuvraj Singh</keyword> couldn’t find any place in the team. Earlier in the day, we read reports speculating Yuvraj Singh’s name in the Final 15. This news would be a disheartening for Yuvi’s fans, who were hoping that Yuvi’s recent performance in the Ranji trophy matches—wherein he scored three consecutive centuries—would help him earn a place in the squad. 

	It’s worth noting that Yuvraj Singh was a star performer in the 2011 World Cup and also the man of the series. However, post recovering from cancer, he hasn’t played much of competitive cricket and not even a single ODI in 2014.

Chasing 305, England's target was revised after rain delayed their reply. They began well, swiftly going past 50 runs in 10 overs. However, the 11th over, bowled by <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/mohammed-shami/4001/30030">Mohammed Shami</a>, changed it all as England lost two wickets in it. First, Cook (19) was trapped in front, although he can consider himself a bit unlucky for the ball had pitched outside leg and then for some reason, Ian Bell (1) left a straight delivery that hit his off-stump. Next man in Joe Root (4) departed quickly after being cleaned up by <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/bhuvneshwar-kumar/4001/25023">Bhuvneshwar Kumar</a>.

Those that followed failed to make any impact with the Indian bowlers calling the shots, striking at regular interval. The team that dominated their guests in an imposing fashion in the longer formats, submitted meekly losing by 133 runs. For India, Jadeja starred with the bowl picking 4/28 while Shami and Ashwin took two wickets apiece. 
 
Earlier, a strokeful, chanceless century from <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/suresh-raina/4001/4059">Suresh Raina</a> helped India to 304/6. Raina scored 100 (75, 12X4, 3X6) while building a century stand worth 144 runs with <keyword id="1411" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="captain">captain</keyword> <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ms-dhoni/4001/4057">MS Dhoni</a> (52) as India recovered from early shocks to post a strong total. India were off to a shaky, nervous start after Cook inserted them in. The visitors were troubled by <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/james-anderson/3001/3040">James Anderson</a> and <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/chris-woakes/3001/3098">Chris Woakes</a> early on as they tested them with pace and swing. The first two overs were played safely through without a run being scored. Both the India openers <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/rohit-sharma/4001/4095">Rohit Sharma</a> and <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/shikhar-dhawan/4001/28004">Shikhar Dhawan</a>, though, opened their account with a boundary each but looked unconvincing in a slow start. Dhawan (11) seemed to carry his poor form from the Test series into the ODIs after edging Chris Woakes to wicketkeeper <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/jos-buttler/3001/3111">Jos Buttler</a> in the eighth over. In the same over, <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/virat-kohli/4001/25007">Virat Kohli</a> was out for a duck after his eagerness to dictate terms from the word go saw him dancing down the track for an uppish drive which went straight into the hands of Cook. 
 
India were 19/2 and off to an ominous start. Considering how they reacted in such scenarios during the Test series, only worse was expected from them. But Rohit and <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ajinkya-rahane/4001/32045">Ajinkya Rahane</a> calmed the nerves, settling in nicely, building a 91-run stand that revived the innings. Rahane played some lovely strokes and looked set for a big one but one moment of sluggishness got the better of him as he was stumped off <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/james-tredwell/3001/3096">James Tredwell</a> for 41 in the 24th over. On the other hand, Rohit's innings was a combination of some classy batting and few irresponsible strokes. He was beaten on numerous occasions but was lucky enough to not nick them. Four boundaries and a six off a free-hit helped him to a fifty before Woakes at mid-off caught his miscued shot off Tredwell. 
 However, the highlight of the innings was the partnership between captain <keyword id="6397" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dhoni">Dhoni</keyword> and Raina that lifted the Indians as the duo unfurled a flurry of strokes with the latter taking the centrestage. India managed just 26 runs besides losing two wickets in the first powerplay but with Raina and Dhoni they clobbered 62 in the second. Raina eventually departed after being caught in the deep by Anderson off Woakes. 
 
 
 
Raina had set the tone early in his knock scoring a boundary off his third delivery. He sent the ball past the boundary line regularly with the shot of his innings being a straight hit over Woakes' head for a six. Even Anderson, the wrecker-in-chief during the Test series, wasn't spared as Raina flayed him for three successive fours in the 40th over. He assessment and judgement of the deliveries was spot on and it was his innings that helped India to post a score in excess of 300. 
 
England bowlers started well, bowling the right line and length exploiting the favourable conditions well after winning the all important toss. Woakes had taken two wickets while allowing just eight runs in his first spell of five overs. His was aptly rewarded for his accuracy all throughout, finishing with 4/52. However, as the innings progressed, with the batsman settling in, the England bowlers lost the grip. The biggest culprit of the slide being Chris Jordan who leaked 73 in 10 wicketless overs including one in which he bowled five wides. Tredwell also bowled decently for his 2/42 in 10 overs.

Raina, Spinners Deliver Emphatic Cricket Win In England

Saturday night will see a clash between the master and the apprentice. MS Dhoni, who is on the last bend of his career and has been turning up only for <keyword id="13886" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chennai-Super-Kings">Chennai Super Kings</keyword> (CSK) since his retirement from international cricket last year, will lead the three-time champions against Delhi Capitals (DC), who will be captained by Rishabh Pant, his long-term successor as India's first choice wicketkeeper. Pant has said in the past that he wants to emulate Dhoni but seems to be carving his own niche. While his power-hitting has already been well-known, his batting went a notch higher since the last Indian Premier League (IPL) as he helped India win the Test series in Australia and against England at home. His wicketkeeping skills came as a pleasant surprise during both series and now it will be his captaincy skills that will be put to test. Pant replaced the injured Shreyas Iyer, who is nursing a shoulder injury. The last year's runners-up have also added Steve Smith to their squad. Their pace bowling attack, comprising Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, <keyword id="149050" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Umesh-Yadav">Umesh Yadav</keyword> and Ishant Sharma along with all-rounders Chris Woakes, Tom Curran and Marcus Stoinis, is among the best in the league. Experienced and acclaimed spinners like off-spinner R Ashwin and leg-spinner Amit Mishra make up a very strong bowling line-up that will test the CSK batting line-up that performed very poorly in the last edition. The CSK batting will rely a lot on Faf du Plessis but the return of Suresh Raina, who missed the last season, will be a boost for the three-time champions as they look to do better this time than the seventh place finish they got last season. India's Test batting stalwart Cheteshwar Pujara too has been included in the CSK line-up for his first IPL in seven years. The India No. 3 batsman was seen using a higher back-lift and hitting sixes in one of the net sessions. CSK blundered last year by not reading the pitches well and not playing their spinners early enough. They realised their mistake and started to give Mitchell Santner and Imran Tahir matches. But it was too late by then. One man who could make a difference is Shardul Thakur, who has done exceedingly well for India since the last IPL. He would be leading their pace bowling along with Deepak Chahar or Aussie Jason Behrendorff, who has come in for Josh Hazlewood. But essentially, CSK's fate on Saturday will depend on how their batting stands up to DC's bowling. It's master vs disciple: Dhoni takes on Pant in today's second IPL match as CSK clashes with DC

The good thing about the tour is that it finished on a good note for India. They beat England comfortably 3-1 in those four 50-over games and inspite of losing the Twenty20 showed they are a match for anybody in the world. They can go forward with confidence, knowing they have a good chance of retaining their World Championship in Australia and New Zealand. 
 India are so good at one-day <keyword id="1521" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Cricket">cricket</keyword> that they have nothing to fear from any side in the world. They really are a match for anyone. They have talented players, they have attacking batsmen, and plenty of them. <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ms-dhoni/4001/4057">MS Dhoni</a> - one of the best batsmen in the world - comes in after the main batsmen; <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/suresh-raina/4001/4059">Suresh Raina</a> is outstanding; <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/virat-kohli/4001/25007">Virat Kohli</a> is yet to perform but will make the team; and then the lower order - <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ravindra-jadeja/4001/32004">Ravindra Jadeja</a>, <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ravichandran-ashwin/4001/26007">R Ashwin</a> - all can bat. 
 That means they've got plenty of bowlers, they've got variety with a left-arm spinner and offspinner - once again Jadeja, Ashwin - and they've also got late-order backing. They have a <keyword id="1411" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="captain">captain</keyword> who never panics, even if he's under pressure. He's a great leader and never lets you see he's rattled, even if he is. He's composed, self-assured and confident in what he's doing. 
 
England have lots of problems in one-day cricket. <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/alastair-cook/3001/3056">Alastair Cook</a>'s a good player but we have better players to play upfront. They don't have any real death bowlers; they depend on <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/stuart-broad/3001/3067">Stuart Broad</a> who's been injured. They don't have a great spinner yet; and are trying to make <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/moeen-ali/3001/3153">Moeen Ali</a> one. They're not sure about the batting order. 
 
The only thing England are sure of is the new wicketkeeper-batsmen <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/jos-buttler/3001/3111">Jos Buttler</a>. In <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/james-tredwell/3001/3096">James Tredwell</a>, they have an experienced offspinner and he will do all right. Other than that, and Broad when he's fit, they are not sure of anything really so near to the World Cup. They are not sure of their best XI, who should be captain, who the best spinner is. Neither do they have any death bowlers with just six months to go for the World Cup. 
 
In Tests, here is the problem for India. They have to sort themselves out because for quite a few years now they have travelled abroad and performed awfully. They are better than that. It can’t be lack of talent; it has to be a mental thing. 
 
They made some huge mistakes – for too long they played Jadeja as the main spinner instead of Ashwin. It was staring at them in the face that Ashwin should have bowled because England had five left-handers, with lots of footholds to come over a five-day match. Ashwin would have turned the ball from those footholds against the English left-hand batsmen. Then you have Dhoni who made a poor decision at Old Trafford. On a perfect day for bowling: overcast, cool, the pitch looked fresh for bowling and he went and batted, after winning the toss. 
 
Then there were the injuries. <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ishant-sharma/4001/4094">Ishant Sharma</a> never stayed fit. He is a really good bowler but you have to find a way of keeping your bowlers fit. It's about what you need and the way you play him. The Indian fast bowlers break down like the Australian fast bowlers so you have to find someone who can help train these guys stay fitter. 
 
Fortunately it finished on a really good note for India, and they can go forward and go home with their heads held high.

Boycott exclusive: India, England are polar opposites in ODIs

He has been the cynosure of all eyes ever since his savage assault on Kings XI Punjab yielded him 87 runs off just 25 balls. And although Chennai Super Kings lost the second Qualifier, Suresh Raina gave a timely reminder of exactly what he is capable of. Come June 15, Raina will yet again be keen to prove that his consistency is not just confined to the Indian Premier League and that he still remains one of India's best bets in the middle order. 
 With an international cricket career spanning almost eight years, Raina has been through several peaks and valleys. However, his biggest setback came when he was dropped from India's ODI set-up just before the Asia Cup in March following a string of below-par performances in the previous nine months. He managed just one half-century (that too against a poor <keyword id="41570" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Zimbabwe">Zimbabwe</keyword> side) in his previous 20-odd ODI innings for an average under 26. His last four series have fetched him just 291 runs from 15 innings against Australia, West Indies, South Africa and New Zealand with the short ball repeatedly doing him in. 
 In his absence, India struggled in the Asia Cup, winning only against Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Raina's exploits in the World Twenty20 a month later in Bangladesh saw him batting in a entirely different zone. He used the warm-up games to get back into the feel of things with an unbeaten 54 against England and carried it into the Super 10s with 63 runs in four innings. Then came the <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword>, where the Uttar Pradesh batsman once again went past 400 runs to earn himself a ticket to Bangladesh, where he gets to <keyword id="1411" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="captain">captain</keyword> the side in the absence of MS Dhoni. 
 Now that Raina is back in the squad, he has a stiff task at hand. Moreover, the absence of <keyword id="17805" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Shikhar-Dhawan">Shikhar Dhawan</keyword>, <keyword id="6354486" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Virat-Kohli">Virat Kohli</keyword>, Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami means he is the senior-most player in the side who has his own captaincy record standing against him. Raina has led in nine ODIs previously, out of which India have lost five - two of which came against Zimbabwe in a tri-series including Sri Lanka in 2010. Back then too, Raina was handed a relatively lesser experienced side. 
 
If one is to examine Raina's graph, his batting has taken a hit during captaincy. In his first series against West Indies in 2011, he averaged a shade over 20 and in the tri-series it was 27.66. He is yet to register a half-century in nine innings with a best of 43 and this is a perfect platform for the 27-year-old to prove his mettle as a leader. A lot will depend on how and where he bats. With an inexperienced line-up in picture, India would want its batting to revolve around him in order to provide resilience and if required, finish the game off for the side. 
 
One thing that is sure to help Raina is the fact that he is coming off another sublime IPL season. He had 523 runs from 16 games at 40.23 with five fifties, becoming the only batsman to score in excess of 400 runs in every edition of the tournament. India can also take heart from the fact that his pep talk with former India captain Sourav Ganguly has helped him deal with chest-high deliveries better. Raina looked fairly at ease in the World T20 and the IPL. 
 The equation in Bangladesh might sound more simple than it actually is. And in such circumstances, where Bangladesh will look forward to pulling off their biggest ever series win against the current ODI world champions, Raina's role becomes all the more crucial. His biggest challenge will be to decide the batting order which is relatively weakened with the exclusions of big names. Cheteshwar Pujara has played two ODIs in Zimbabwe - one was a fourth-ball duck and the other was an awkward 24-ball 13. With Ajinkya Rahane and <keyword id="6405247" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Robin-Uthappa">Robin Uthappa</keyword> likely to open the innings, Raina would fancy batting Pujara at No.3 with the rest to follow. 
 Rahane has 687 runs from 27 games, Uthappa 786 from 38, Ambati Rayadu 243 from 10 and the recalled <keyword id="13829" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Manoj-Tiwary">Manoj Tiwary</keyword> 251 from eight games. Apart from this, Wriddhiman Saha and Stuart Binny have batted just once for India in ODIs and Kedar Jadhav and Parvez Rasool haven't played yet. All this is far from an ideal scenario for Raina to mark his comeback into the 50-over fray. His bowling unit looks fragile too hence, a lot would be expected of Mohit Sharma (23 wickets from 16 games) and Umesh Yadav (11 wickets in 12 matches) based on successful IPL 7 stints. Amit Mishra too needs to come good and repeat his World T20 heroics. 
 
The task as hand is not as easy as it seems for the free-flowing left-handed batsman. A tour of England is around the corner and a good outing against Bangladesh could do Raina's confidence a world of good. Based on current form, Raina's place in the side seems safe at the moment but with the World Cup 2015 being the big picture, he surely is aware of the many capped and uncapped players that are waiting in the wings.

Raina's India Comeback Not As Easy As It Seems

 After the Powerplay, 70 for 1. At the halfway mark, 109 for 2. After 20 overs, 242 for 6. This is hardly what <keyword id="2530109" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dolphins-captain">Dolphins captain</keyword> Morne van Wyk would have hoped for after he put CSK in to bat. Between the first over, in which left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj dismissed <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/dwayne-smith/26001/10043">Dwayne Smith</a>, and the 20th, which saw pacer Kyle Abbott concede just five singles, CSK looted 228 runs at a rate of 12.66. Of those, 90 came off 43 balls to Raina, whose blistering innings contained eight sixes as he crossed 5000 runs in T20 cricket. And therein was the foundation of CSK's success. 
 
The T20 superstar briefly played second fiddle to <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/brendon-mccullum/26001/6035">Brendon McCullum</a>, who launched a stinging assault on the bowling as he tore into Craig Alexander and Abbott, but once he started to tee off it was bad news for Dolphins. Raina was on 17 off 12 balls balls when McCullum was 45 off 23, but soon caught up. He drew level with McCullum on the sixes tally with a couple off Andile Phehlukwayo in the seventh over, then went one ahead with another off a Robbie Frylinck slower ball. Each of his boundary shots resonated with a ferocity rarely associated with Raina, and you got the feeling something special was brewing. 
 
Though McCullum fell to Khaya Zondo for 49, he had helped CSK draw level with the quickest century stand in the CLT20, achieved, not surprisingly, at this same ground. Raina did not blink at the departure of his partner, hitting Zondo out of the attack as he galloped to his half-century in 27 balls. Maharaj returned and was effortlessly hit for two sixes, each with deft footwork and a beautiful follow-through; Daryn Smit was swung over long-on for Raina's eighth maximum. He was eventually out to the first ugly shot played, and Frylinck added another in the over when he yorked <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ms-dhoni/26001/4057">MS Dhoni </a>first ball. 
 
Faf du Plessis, whose contribution to the stand of 65 with Raina was 11, clattered three fours and a six revive CSK and Ravindra Jadeja smoked 24 off five balls in a partnership of 32 in 11 with Dwayne Bravo (11). Jadeja's 14-ball 40 was part muscle and part placement and lifted CSK to a winning total. 
 Left with a mountain to climb, Dolphins took 20 off the first over bowled by <keyword id="6357606" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ashish-Nehra">Ashish Nehra</keyword>, with left-hander Cameron Delport hitting two fours and a six. The second over produced 16 for the loss of van Wyk (17 off 7) though the Dolphins captain had reason to feel aggrieved after being given lbw by umpire K Srinath to a ball from R Ashwin that clearly pitched outside leg stump. Delport's approach of making room and slicing hard yielded a six and three fours off <keyword id="46772" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mohit-Sharma">Mohit Sharma</keyword>, as Dolphins achieved the fastest team 50 in tournament history (15 balls), but the riposte was short-lived. Playing from the crease, Delport missed a slower one from Mohit and was bowled for a nine-ball 34. 
 
Cody Chetty took a liking to Jadeja's left-arm spin and Dolphins finished the Powerplay block on 85 for 2, but too many attempts to hit out meant chances for the fielders. Maharaj slogged at Mohit and missed and Chetty (38) picked out deep midwicket off Dwayne Bravo, allowing CSK room to breathe. From here, Dolphins lost in a slew of cross-batted hits and frenetic running, bowled out for 188 in 20 overs. Mohit finished with very credible figures of 4 for 41 after conceding 20 in his first five deliveries.

Raina-Charged CSK Make Dolphins Cry

After an abysmal run in the 1-3 Test loss, the Indian team showed their true mettle in coloured clothing when they reversed the Test result, winning the rain-hit five-match ODI series 3-1. India's win in the ODI series against a side not known to be a force in the limited-overs encounter wasn't surprising given their superiority in the format. However, Twenty20 followers would feel that India's three-run loss against an eighth-ranked England side shouldn't be an ideal way to end a largely disappointing tour for India. 
 
Gocricket.com has analysed the individual performances of the Indian players in the five-match series and the one-off T20I. Here is the report card. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/rohit-sharma/4001/4095">Rohit Sharma</a>: 7/10 
 
Played responsibly in his only knock of the ODI series before injuring himself. One of the major positives in his 87-ball 52 at Cardiff was the restrained approach he showed while facing quality new-ball bowling. He was willing to bide his time in the middle and let a more enterprising partner, Ajinkya Rahane on this occasion, take charge. He was dismissed just before promising a bigger knock. A fit and in-form Rohit Sharma will auger well for Team India as the lead-up to the 2015 World Cup builds. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/shikhar-dhawan/4001/28004">Shikhar Dhawan</a>: 6/10 
 
His match-winning 97 not out looked the odd-one-out innings in the five matches he played (four ODIs, one T20I). More often than not, Dhawan repeated the same mistakes he made in the Tests – getting out to balls outside off stump and playing one shot too many after getting set. Dhawan was more looking to thump and muscle the ball instead of just timing it well. His unbeaten knock in the fourth ODI at Edgbaston showed why he is such a dangerous batsmen and oppositions will continue to target him. A player who <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/news/India-in-England-2014-Shikhar-Dhawan-Ajinkya-Rahane-camaraderie-augurs-well-for-India/articleshow/41610038.cms">feeds off success of another teammate</a>, Dhawan didn't make an effort to shield his weaknesses against the moving ball or his uncanny ability to gift wickets to non-threatening spin. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ajinkya-rahane/4001/32045">Ajinkya Rahane</a>: 8.5/10 
 
With 192 runs in four matches, Rahane was easily the batsman of the series. He showed that he has taken his limited-overs game up by leaps and bounds. Of course, the experience of doing well in the preceding Test series benefitted him. His maiden ODI ton, a classy 106 at Edgbaston, has given selectors the realistic option of using Rahane as a third opener in the 2015 World Cup <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/news/India-vs-England-2014-Ajinkya-Rahane-makes-amends-at-the-top/articleshow/41545757.cms">provided either Dhawan or Rohit fail</a>. India could have profited a lot more had he not fell after getting starts in his previous two knocks (a 47-ball 41 at No 4 and 56-ball 45 at No 1). 
 The fact that may go unnoticed is that he had the best strike rate among India's top-4 in the ODI series (93.8) and he hit six sixes in the four ODIs and one T20I, most by an Indian this series along with <keyword id="14587" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Suresh-Raina">Suresh Raina</keyword>. His fielding in the run saving positions was among the best one can see by an Indian in recent years, especially in the T20I where he took four catches. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/virat-kohli/4001/25007">Virat Kohli</a>: 3.5/10 
 Passing marks? Not quite. Indian <keyword id="1521" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cricket">cricket</keyword> lovers would groan at the prospect of waiting till the last match of a more than two-and-a-half month tour to see a Kohli fifty. After a forgettable Test run, Kohli was expected to do a lot better in the ODIs, which he didn't as his 54 runs in three innings would suggest. Seemed to have got close to hitting some form with a neat 50-ball 40 in the third ODI at Trent Bridge but his dismissal in the fifth ODI to <keyword id="80896" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="James-Anderson">James Anderson</keyword> made it evident that he is still coming to grips with 'how to play the moving ball outside off stump' syndrome. 
 
In the run-feast of the T20I, Kohli - India's most prolific limited-overs run scorer since the 2011 World Cup came into his own. Despite his 41-ball 66, he failed to take the team across the finish line, something which he is so used to doing in ODIs. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/suresh-raina/4001/4059">Suresh Raina</a>: 8.5/10 
 Perhaps the best thing to have happened to the Indian team after the Test debacle was Raina, who was back for the ODIs and firing in all cylinders. His counter-attacking 75-ball 100 at Cardiff, hailed by many as one of India's best-ever overseas knocks in ODIs, set the tone for the series as well as giving assurance and belief to India bowlers to do well. Raina's close catching, especially the sharp take to get rid of <keyword id="9234" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Alastair-Cook">Alastair Cook</keyword> at gully, was inspiring. His role as a senior player in the current side was visible during his movement inside the circle, his applause of a fielder and by speaking a word of encouragement to an inexperienced bowler. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/Raina-draws-attention-with-performance-and-infectious-energy/Joshua-Nath/columnshow/41694007.cms">Raina's synergy on the field was infectious</a>, which lifted the atmosphere of the team. Technically, he played the short ball well and didn't show a glaring weakness with the bat. His off spin was more than handy as he took four wickets, one in each ODI, at an economy rate of just over four-and-a-half (4.68). 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ms-dhoni/4001/4057">MS Dhoni</a>: 8/10 
 
Needless to say, most of Dhoni's points are for his captaincy. In the first three ODIs, his bowling changes, field positioning and his reading of the game was astute and he didn't look like a captain who had a terrible team performance in the three previous international outings. Acknowledged the areas his side needs to improve on, especially death-overs bowling that was highlighted in the loss at Leeds and in the T20I at Edgbaston. En route the 3-1 series win, he became India's most successful ODI skipper with 91 victories. 
 As a batsmen, his 52 at Cardiff was the perfect foil for a marauding Raina at the other end. After not being required to bat in the third and fourth ODIs, he missed out in the fifth ODI and his habit of taking the match till the end keeping the bulk of big-hitting to himself backfired in the lone T20I, which allowed the hosts to eke out a three-run win. Increasingly, Dhoni needs more performers like Raina, Rahane and <keyword id="479464" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bhuvneshwar-Kumar">Bhuvneshwar Kumar</keyword>. Add to that an in-form Kohli, wicket-taking spinners and incisive new-ball bowlers and Dhoni has a team to beat in the 2015 World Cup. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ambati-rayudu/4001/31025">Ambati Rayudu</a>: 7.5/10 
 
Still isn't a finished product but made good use of the chances he got in the middle order - something that could would have been difficult to come by had Rohit not got injured. Rayudu scored fifties in each of the innings he got to bat in the ODIs, scoring 117 runs in all. Displayed a calm head on his shoulders at this level during his match-winning unbeaten 64 in the Trent Bridge ODI. While, two matches later, he frittered a brilliant chance to score a big one and threw his wicket away after getting to 53. Areas where he can improve – batting strike rate (81.81) and ground fielding, where he could be found a tad slow to move on the field. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ravindra-jadeja/4001/32004">Ravindra Jadeja</a>: 8/10 
 
Ravindra Jadeja the left-arm spinner was at his best in the ODIs. Barring the mauling he received from the hands of Joe Root in the final ODI at Leeds, Jadeja had excellent figures of seven for 106 at an economy rate of just under four in the ODIs. He was the chief benefactor of English batsmen trying to sweep and trying to hit out. As a batsmen, he did shine in a lone effort at Leeds - hitting a fighting 87 off 68 balls. Coming in at number seven and having a career-average of 35, in Jadeja, Dhoni has an able finisher, who comes under pressure of having to deliver each time. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ravichandran-ashwin/4001/26007">R Ashwin</a>: 7.5/10 
 
Led the slow-bowling attack well and revelled in the partnership with Jadeja against not the most adept players of spin. Ashwin's figures of three for 39 at Trent Bridge earned him the Man-of-the-Match award as he outfoxed the batsmen. Where every other bowler was being targeted by the English batsmen in the Leeds game, Ashwin put brakes on the scoring. He didn't try and overuse his variations. His seven wickets in four games at an average of 24 and an economy of less than 4.50 is encouraging for India. Ashwin needs to improve his ground fielding, running between the wickets and continue to take wickets in the middle overs in order to silence his detractors. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/bhuvneshwar-kumar/4001/25023">Bhuvneshwar Kumar</a>: 7.5/10 
 
The only Indian bowler to play all the Tests and ODIs on the tour, Bhuvneshwar is fast becoming Dhoni's go-to man. He troubled Alex Hales with an in-swinging ball and was hard to get away for the batsmen with the new ball. He commanded the respect of the England batsmen as he kept things tight and seldom wavered from the right channel – a series economy rate of 4.32 is testimony to that. After a long tour and a truckload of overs, this 24-year-old will welcome the month-long rest. He took five wickets for 134 runs in the four ODIs. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/mohammed-shami/4001/30030">Mohammed Shami</a>: 8/10 
 
The most improved bowler since the Tests, Shami showed why he was touted as India's future strike-bowler when he made his Test debut last year. He felt at home playing the ODIs, ran in with a positive attitude and looked to take wickets at all times - something which wasn't quite visible in the Test series. His speeds were up there and he got the ball to move late. Shami was easily the best bowler in either side with eight wickets with a best of three for 28 at Edgbaston and a series average of a wicket every 19 runs and 24 balls. His economy rate too came down to 4.77 in the series, a marked improvement over his career record. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/mohit-sharma/4001/26024">Mohit Sharma</a>: 5/10 
 <keyword id="46772" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mohit-Sharma">Mohit Sharma</keyword> did well in the two ODIs he played but couldn't get a breakthrough as he gave away 35 runs in his nine overs before missing out on the final two matches due to injury. He got the ball to jag away from Cook and tied the opening batsmen down. Also, the Chennai Super Kings and Haryana medium-pacer got the odd ball to bounce more than expected. Mohit came back in the T20I but got hit for plenty as his death bowling skills were tested to the core while being pasted by Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara for 21 runs in an over in Edgbaston. The 24-year-old still needs to do more in order to give selectors the hint that he is one of India's fast bowling options. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/umesh-yadav/4001/28013">Umesh Yadav</a>: 3/10 
 
Umesh did little to stake claim in the ODI playing XI as was largely erratic in the one match he played, giving away 46 runs in his six overs. His only bright spot was the dismissal of Hales, beating him for pace on a short delivery. Pace is fine in the early 140s, but he needs to get the ball to move both ways to make an impact. And most importantly, he needs to hit the right line and length repeatedly. 
 
<a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/dhawal-kulkarni/4001/31006">Dhawal Kulkarni</a>: 3/10 
 
Some may argue that he got a raw deal after playing just one match, in which he went wicketless and didn't trouble the batsmen. His speeds were up there in the high 130 kmph and hit the 140 mark on more than couple of occasions. Uncertainty, although remains over whether he will be retained in the team for the series against West Indies.

India's Limited-Overs Report Card Of England

Amid suspension of two IPL teams - Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and <keyword id="13802" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rajasthan-Royals">Rajasthan Royals</keyword> (RR) – for two years, the corporate India and <keyword id="54572" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="PepsiCo">PepsiCo</keyword> might not be interested in any Indian Premier League (IPL) related events or projects. PepsiCo might not bid again for title sponsorship of the IPL after its five-year contract ends in 2017, three industry insiders told the Economic Times, a day after a <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> panel called for the suspension. 

	Moreover, top companies will remain cautious if the scandal-ridden ILP decides to auction two new teams to replace suspended teams - CSK and RR. 
 This could mean the <keyword id="81008" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Board-of-Control-for-Cricket-in-India">Board of Control for Cricket in India</keyword> (<keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword>) may not get high valuations as it did when the Pune and Kochi teams were sold, a fresh auction may offer some a chance to buy teams and players at lower prices. 

	A Pepsi executive told ET: “There has been too much controversy in the IPL and the internal thought process is that the company doesn't want to re-bid for the title sponsorship." 
 

	He added: "Title sponsorship is a direct association with the brand image, which directly risks getting impacted by controversy." 
 

	PepsiCo won the right to attach its name to the tournament with a 396 crore bid for a five-year period that started 2013, the very year in which the spot fixing scandal broke with the arrest of three cricketers. 
 Pepsi's bid was almost twice what the previous sponsor, real estate firm <keyword id="6362997" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="DLF">DLF</keyword>, had paid the BCCI for the 2008-12 term. 

	Meanwhile, the Indian cricket board is learnt to be considering running the two franchises by itself. It is also considering the option of asking Kochi team to make a comeback, which will help it save Rs 550 crore. 
 

	Earlier, a court-appointed arbitrator has asked the BCCI to pay team Kochi a compensation of Rs 550 crore for terminating the franchise agreement in September 2011.
 "The risk around IPL will be discounted in the bids and eventual prices could be lower than 2008 levels," said <keyword id="7025" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Venugopal-Dhoot">Venugopal Dhoot</keyword>, chairman of Videocon. Dhoot sees this as a great opportunity to buy a team, given the possibility of much lower prices and the fact that top players from the suspended teams such as MS Dhoni, <keyword id="14587" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Suresh-Raina">Suresh Raina</keyword>, R Ashwin, <keyword id="58128" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Dwayne-Bravo">Dwayne Bravo</keyword>, <keyword id="55681" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Brendon-McCullum">Brendon McCullum</keyword>, Ajinkya Rahane and <keyword id="84726" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Steve-Smith">Steve Smith</keyword> could be up for grabs. Dhoot said he will be more cautious now while assessing and bidding. The latest IPL franchise, Hyderabad, was bought by the Sun Group for Rs 85 crore a year in 2012, which was half the Rs 170 crore a year that the <keyword id="31906" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sahara-group">Sahara Group</keyword> bid to get the Pune franchise in 2010. The cheapest IPL team, Rajasthan Royals, was originally auctioned in 2008 for about Rs 26.8 crore a year and the most expensive at that time was <keyword id="13880" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mumbai-Indians">Mumbai Indians</keyword> for Rs 44.1 crore a year. 

	ET spoke to the CEO of a bank, the owner of a large retail chain, and spokespersons for an auto major, a mining firm and a telecom major to assess the prospects of a possible fresh team auction. All said they would not be bidding even though most of them had shown interest in IPL over the past few years.
 

	While some said that it is not their business, others pointed out that even with a possible discount, it is still a very expensive proposition.
 

	"There are too many other sports that have come up in recent times where investments are much lower," said the CEO of a bank.
 An executive at the auto major said the company has disassociated itself from sponsorship during IPL and is only an on-air advertiser during the tournament. A spokesperson for <keyword id="6357252" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Hero-MotoCorp">Hero MotoCorp</keyword> said the company does not have any plans to buy an IPL team.

Pepsi not interested in becoming prime IPL sponsor anymore

On the eve of their second game at Ahmedabad, <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/tillakaratne-mudiyanselage-dilshan/9001/9034">Tillakaratne Dilshan</a> had explained how a total in the region of 280-300 had become a norm in 50-over cricket, especially after the new field restrictions were put in place. His words were almost prophetic as after being restricted to 274, <keyword id="6355572" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sri-Lanka">Sri Lanka</keyword> weren't able to control a rampaging Indian batting order that finished off the job with six wickets in hand and 5.3 overs to spare, going 2-0 up in the five-match series and moving ever so close towards taking an unassailable lead. 
 
The pre-match buzz centred mostly around local lad <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/akshar-rajeshbhai-patel/4001/31051">Akshar Patel's</a> first international match at his home ground, but even as he impressed with his accurate left-arm spin in the middle overs to stifle Sri Lanka, <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/ambati-thirupathi-rayudu/4001/31025">Ambati Rayudu</a> walked away with the honours near his adopted home - Baroda - where he plays his domestic cricket. He has mostly been confined to a back-up role in a star-studded line-up, but has made the most of the limited opportunities he has had so far, and returning not out on 121* (118b, 10x4, 4x6) after setting up the chase would have been doubly satisfying. 
 
 
 
India went into the game with three spinners on a Motera surface that looked like it would assist the medium pacers more, but <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/virat-kohli/4001/25007">Virat Kohli's</a> ploy worked wonders as Sri Lanka were kept to 274 for 8 in the day/night fixture. The visitors put in a better batting effort as compared to Cuttack, but <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/angelo-davis-mathews/9001/9058">Angelo Mathews</a> - whose 92* (101b, 10x4, 1x6) added some solidity to the total - would have been kicking himself for not capitalizing on what looked like a good toss to win. 
 India's run chase wasn't perfect in any way after Ajinkya Rahane was removed by Dhammika Prasad in the seventh over for 8, caught brilliantly by <keyword id="23015" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mahela-Jayawardene">Mahela Jayawardene</keyword> at slip on rebound after wicketkeeper <keyword id="22772" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kumar-Sangakkara">Kumar Sangakkara</keyword> had spilled a regulation chance. To their credit, Sri Lanka's pacers began well and Lahiru Gamage could have had Dhawan for 10 in the eighth over when the umpire turned down a frantic appeal for caught behind. 
 
Promoted to No. 3, Rayudu, along with <a href="http://www.gocricket.com/player/shikhar-dhawan/4001/28004">Shikhar Dhawan</a> consolidated for long periods before laying into the change bowlers, and Dhawan took the lead after reaching his seventh ODI half-century. As Dhawan accelerated by taking 16 off a Thisara Perera over, Rayudu continued to play the accumulator, and wasn't until the left-hander holed out to deep square leg off Seekkuge Prasanna for 79 (80b, 7x4, 1x6) did Rayudu decide to step it up. 
 Rayudu was particularly impressive against Sri Lanka's spinners, nimble on his feet as he took boundaries and sixes off them with ease, and exercised restraint when the bowlers were on top. After adding 122 with Dhawan, Rayudu combined with <keyword id="6354486" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Virat-Kohli">Virat Kohli</keyword> to add 116 more as the asking rate dropped significantly. Kohli (49, 44b, 2x4, 2x6) and <keyword id="14587" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Suresh-Raina">Suresh Raina</keyword> (14, 6b, 1x4, 1x6) fell in quick succession to Prasanna (3/53) towards the end, but Rayudu ensured India closed the chase without much drama. 
 
Mathews' innings in the afternoon had turned out to be pivotal, as with Kumar Sangakkara (61, 86b, 4x4) they added 90 vital runs that revived Sri Lanka's innings after being reduced to 64 for 3 in the 14th over. But unlike India who had decided to take their batting Powerplay early at Cuttack, Mathews and Sangakkara held back and only chose to go for it in the 32nd over, and lost three wickets during that period, losing Sangakkara, Prasanna and Ashan Priyanjan while adding just 30.
