About 40% of Mexico City's water is lost due to leaky pipes and other issues, the Post reported.Gabriel Quadri de la Torre, a federal congressman for the Mexico City district of Coyoacán, told the outlet that fixing the pipes would cost billions and that it's "very difficult to think" the city will have the money to pay for it.With June 26 fast approaching, the city desperately needs rain. But rainfall might cause a "false sense of security," Christina Boyes, a professor at the Center for Economic Research and Teaching in Mexico City, told the Post.Researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico said in a study that intensive water capture, using treated residual water for agriculture, and refilling aquifers with surface water, could save the Cutzmala system, according to Mexico Business News.The study found that only 75% of farms in the area use irrigated water, and most do not reuse the water when they can. Still, the study's plan would cost an estimated $5 billion, the report says.Mexico's National Water Commission <a target="_blank" href="https://www.gob.mx/conagua/prensa/avanzan-autoridades-en-infraestructura-complementaria-del-sistema-cutzamala">announced in February</a> that it's working on projects to improve the Cutzamala system and help supplement some of the water it is losing. As part of the action, the Mexico City Water System introduced a plan to improve infrastructure reliability, strengthen programs for private company participation in the water network, and harvest rainwater in schools, the agency said.

The SpaceX rescue mission faced its own challenges leading up to the launch. He said, “The elephant has now gone out for a walk and appears to be returning to the forest. We would like the elephant to return to the forest and remain there on a durable basis… Elephant moves slowly, and last mile inflation tends to be sticky.” On Friday, the Indian government data showed that the year-on-year inflation rate based on the Consumer Price Index (<keyword id="20468215" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="CPI" source="keywords">CPI</keyword>) for June 2024 stood at 5.08 per cent — rising from 4.75% last month. This was the first time the headline inflation had risen since December 2023! Looks like the elephant decided to stop and look back on its way to the forest. The question remains, what’s next — will it return to the forest or return to the room to haunt us again? <h2>Food price inflation at a record high</h2> The major driver for the higher inflation figures this month has been the rising <keyword id="19960157" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="food-prices" source="keywords">food prices</keyword> across India. In fact, food price inflation almost doubled year-on-year in June, rising to 8.36 per cent last month compared to 4.63 per cent in June 2023. Inflation in the food basket was 9.36 per cent in June, up from 8.69 per cent in May, according to the data of the National Statistical Office (NSO). Government data showed that <keyword id="513422" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-inflation" source="Orion">retail inflation</keyword> for all food segments, including cereal, meat, eggs, milk, oils, fruits, vegetables, pulses, sugar, spices, prepared snacks, and sweets, increased month-on-month. This was the main cause for retail inflation hardening in June, diverging from the previous months' moderation. While the inflation rate based on the all-India CPI for June 2024 stood at 5.08%, rural and urban inflation rates also spiked to 5.66 per cent and 4.39 per cent, respectively. “Barring the food basket, inflation is indicating signs of bottoming out broadly across the non-food categories, also seen in the inflation in the core categories averaging at 3.5% in the last six months. A stable monsoon will play an important role in stabilising food prices and inflation levels over the next few months,” said Vivek Rathi, National Director Research, Knight Frank India. In May, annual retail inflation was at a 12-month low of 4.75%, slightly down from April's 4.83%. In December last year, retail inflation stood at 5.7 % and had been moderating until June. On the other hand, the US CPI rose only 3% on an annual basis in June versus expectations of 3.2%. Month-over-month, the US CPI declined 0.1%, on expectations for a 0.1% rise. <h2>There goes the chance of an early rate cut?</h2> While European central banks started to cut interest rates last month, hopes of such policy moves seem to have been derailed by these inflation figures. Indian central bank, RBI, has remained cautiously focused on inflation as the growth prospects remained robust. It has been waiting for the final phase of disinflation to materialise before considering rate cuts. The situation, however, does seem rather peculiar — as long as inflation does not align with the central bank's 4% target, the interest rates may remain rather high. However, the current economic environment is not gloomy at all, characterized by a robust GDP growth rate, estimated at 8.2% for 2023-24. Hence, the RBI adopts a wait-and-see approach. And the wait is likely to continue a little while longer. This year, food prices have become a significant issue for policymakers in India, and the RBI governor pinned his hopes on a good monsoon season to alleviate the food price inflation concerns. So far, the monsoon has stood up to our expectations, yet the food prices have remained stubbornly high, mainly due to extended heat wave conditions in June. "The CPI inflation came marginally higher than our expectations. While the <keyword id="67286" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="food-inflation" source="Orion">food inflation</keyword> risks will continue to dominate in the near term, we expect better sowing patterns and spatial distribution of rains to eventually ease the price pressures beyond these volatile months. Having said that, the central bank will be in no hurry to ease <keyword id="20104157" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="monetary-policy" source="keywords">monetary policy</keyword> given the headroom from robust growth in the backdrop of near-term inflation risks," said Upasna Bhardwaj, Chief Economist at Kotak Mahindra Bank. India's retail inflation remains within the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) comfort range of 2-6% but exceeds the ideal 4% scenario. While inflation is a global concern, India has so far managed its inflation trajectory relatively well. Since May 2022, the RBI has raised the repo rate by 250 basis points cumulatively to combat inflation. However, over the last eight policy cycles, the central bank has kept the rates consistent at 6.5%. The next monetary policy meeting of the RBI is scheduled for early August. And with the higher-than-expected inflation data, the central bank is likely to keep the rate unchanged next month as well for the ninth consecutive month. However, hopes are still alive for a rate cut towards the end of the year. "We are not ruling out a stance change in October 2024 and a 25 bps rate cut each in December 2024 and February 2025, followed by an extended pause, if the food inflation outlook turns decidedly favourable on the back of a normal magnitude and favourable distribution of rainfall in the rest of the monsoon season, and there are no other shocks, either global or domestic," said Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist at ICRA. The BCCI secretary said there has been no precedent of having different coaches for different formats but ultimately the decision rests with the Cricket Advisory Committee. The CAC comprises Jatin Paranjape, Ashok Malhotra and Sulakshana Naik. "There is no precedent of different coaches for different format in Indian cricket. Besides, we have a number of players who are all-format players. There are many common players across formats such as Rishabh Pant, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma," he said. "Ultimately, this is the Cricket Advisory Committee's call. I have to implement what they decide," he added. Shah said even a foreign coach can be considered depending on the CAC's recommendations. "If the CAC selects a foreign coach, I can't interfere," he added. The BCCI secretary informed that the vacant post of one national selector is expected to be filled up soon. The WiFi on ships is satellite-based, so the signal will be slower if there's a lot of cloud cover. Rain may also temporarily cut it out completely.The WiFi signal in rooms can be weak. When I get on board, I walk around public places, look at the ceiling, and find the repeaters, which amplify the router's signal. I park myself under a repeater to work, so at least I know I'm getting the fastest signal.<h2>Video calls can be dicey, but voice calls over WiFi work well</h2>Most of my work is using emails, social media apps, and a web browser, so I don't tend to have problems. The upload speed is the most difficult thing about working on a cruise ship.Working from a cruise ship might not be for you if you're required to upload a video to YouTube or be on video for 100% of your Zoom calls. Zoom with video turned off works well. I post TikToks all day, but uploading to YouTube will fail almost every time.Turn off your cell service on the ship, even if you have unlimited roaming overseas. Phones use satellite maritime cellular, and it's ridiculously expensive. I've heard of people who have come home with $1,000 cellular bills because they didn't turn off their roaming.I can typically make most of my calls over WiFi, but you won't be able to on some ships. Texting from ship to land usually works well if you're using the same type of phone as the person you're messaging, but when you're texting cross-platform, sometimes it doesn't work.<h2>Finding power outlets can be challenging</h2><div type="image" title="a laptop plugged into an outlet" height="1326" width="1768" msid="109561043" hostid="261" sizebytes="61184"></div>Typically, if you need to put in a full day of work connected to power, you need to stay in your room. One tip to finding power when you're looking around public areas is to see where they plug in the vacuum cleaners.I strongly recommend bringing a powerboard with multiple USB sockets. I have one with 10 USB connections, so I can charge my phone, GoPro, and other devices simultaneously.<h2>Virgin Voyages ships are the most friendly for remote workers</h2>The galley on a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/virgin-voyages-cruise-ship-best-food-restaurants-2024-4">Virgin Voyages ship</a> is set up like a coffee shop, with easily accessible power and USB sockets at the table. <ul><li>Food inflation was the major driver of June CPI which hit a three-month high.</li><li>Tomato price inflation was at 64%, onions at 8.1%, and potato at 10.5% on a sequential basis.</li><li>Retail prices of pulses reported double-digit growth for the third consecutive month.</li><li>On a sequential basis, wheat and rice inflation also picked pace in June. </li></ul>India’s <keyword id="513422" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retail-inflation" source="Orion">retail inflation</keyword> is at a three-month high in June at 4.8%, but it may not have reached its peak yet. Many climate related factors have been playing havoc with food inflation, and with most of North India under floods and this will only add to the pinch on the pocket, economists have warned. “Nine states had inflation above the average while six had above 5% — UP, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Kerala, Bihar and Haryana. The recent floods and landslides in the North will tend to push up inflation further in these states on the food side — especially vegetables and fruits which can add another 0.2% to headline inflation,” said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at Bank of Baroda. Food inflation is a heavyweight in consumer price inflation (CPI), and drove it up in June, even as core inflation cooled as compared to the last month. “Food inflation was the major driver for higher headline inflation print; up by 218 basis points month-on-month versus 67 basis points in the last month due to a 12% hike in vegetables prices,” said a report by Phillip Capital. Price shock: Grains join tomatoes Vegetable prices however are on top of everyone’s minds, and it could get worse as prices of tomatoes refuse to inch down. In June, its prices went up by 64%. But other key vegetables like onion were high too at 8.1%, and potato at 10.5% – on a sequential basis. A report by SBI Ecowrap says that the past 10 years data shows that tomato price increase alone did not influence the overall CPI inflation much — except when it is accompanied by substantial increase in price of potato and onion. “We believe if tomato price increase without any substantial change in potato and onion then average inflation in Q2 FY24 will come near 5.8% yoy but if the TOP (tomato, onion, potato) inflation increases, then CPI might come around 6% yoy in Q2 FY24. Accordingly, average CPI for FY24 will vary between 5.2-5.4%,” says SBI Ecowrap. Grains are not too far behind either. Cereal and pulses inflation remained elevated in June at 12.7% y-o-y and 10.5% y-o-y, respectively. Retail prices of pulses, especially that of tur dal, have risen 24% y-o-y in June, reporting double-digit growth for the third consecutive month. Moreover, the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/india-sows-more-millets-and-less-rice-this-kharif-season/articleshow/101642365.cms"> sowing in rice and pulses is lower this Kharif season</a> due to delayed monsoons, and that doesn’t bode well for their prices which too are seeing upward pressure. “On a sequential basis, wheat and rice inflation also picked pace in June. Looking ahead, the sale of wheat and rice from the government’s buffer stock via Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) auctions could help cool retail prices of rice, wheat and atta. However, with regards to rice prices, deficient monsoons in West Bengal, a key rice-producing state, could impact sowing, putting upward pressure on prices,” said a report by CareEdge. Milk inflation moderated in June to 8.6% as compared to 8.9%. But it continues to remain sticky above 8%, reeling from the impact of a continued demand-supply mismatch and high fodder costs. “Milk prices could remain higher in the coming months, if unabating cereal inflation keeps cattle feed expensive,” CareEdge says. WPI is comforting, say experts RBI insisted in the last two monetary policy committee meeting updates that its decision to hold key interest rates is a pause not a pivot. Most experts had been hoping that it would go for rate cuts in the second half of the year, but the inflation picture is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/finance/news/with-inflation-cooling-rbi-may-slash-interest-rates-by-50-bps-this-financial-year/articleshow/100531780.cms">putting cold water on their hopes</a>. “While food prices will create inflationary pressures in the upcoming months due to uneven distribution of monsoon and lower kharif sowing, RBI stance would not be solely contingent on seasonal food inflation,” said Phillip Capital. Even at 4.8%, inflation is within the tolerance band of RBI, which is 4-6%. “The RBI will keep a keen eye here and it is almost given that nothing will change in the policy next month. More caution will be expressed on the inflation front,” said Sabnavis. CareEdge however says that wholesale price inflation (WPI) has been contracting and that is offering some comfort. India’s WPI has been in a deflationary zone for the second month in a row in May, as prices contracted by 3.48%. “Deflation in WPI will have a lagged impact on CPI inflation going forward. Having said that, RBI would remain cautious and adopt a wait and watch mode. We reaffirm our view that RBI would maintain an extended pause in 2023,” said CareEdge.
