Microsoft Copilot's underperformance is the latest red flag for investments in AI

And as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nissan-kicks-review-price-rare-find-under-30k-2024-10">more models flood the market</a>, you can get a particularly good deal on a used EV.But shelling out thousands of dollars on an unfamiliar piece of technology (especially one that's been around the block a few times) is daunting for some shoppers.Aside from wondering <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cheapest-electric-car-affordable-kia-ford-chevy-hyundai-nissan-2022-6">which car to buy</a>, used-EV shoppers might be wondering whether the battery could die. Shoppers on a budget might also be looking for more ways to save money, as EV tax credits broadened to include used electric cars in January 2023.The research can be a lot to take on at once. We talked to car-buying experts to demystify the process.<h2>Consider where and how much you drive</h2>Scott Case, the cofounder and CEO of Recurrent, a startup that tracks EV battery health, recommended starting by considering how far you typically drive and the climate you live in — those factors will affect how much range you'll want, as EVs perform best in temperate weather and can't drive quite as far in cold temperatures."Let's say you live in Florida and you drive 30 to 50 miles every day — you can pretty much buy anything," Case said. Pretty much the same goes for EVs.As the years go by, cycles of charging and driving wear out an EV's battery pack, reducing driving range. The vehicle-data firm Geotab has estimated that EV batteries <a href="https://www.geotab.com/blog/ev-battery-health/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tend to lose about 2% of their capacity each year</a>.The good news is that an EV's battery is unlikely to fail completely or render the car useless.But understanding how much life a vehicle has left isn't all that simple. Case said that exposure to extreme temperatures, frequent trips to powerful DC fast chargers, and variations in battery chemistry mean some used cars perform better than others with identical mileage.<div type="image" title="A charging cable extending from a Tesla Supercharger to a Chevrolet Equinox EV." height="3024" width="4032" msid="114294138" hostid="261" sizebytes="789912"></div>Jim Fish, a vice president of Opus IVS, a tech-focused collision-repair company, said the best question to ask about a battery's care is how often it was left below 20% and above 80% of its charge.Leaving a battery too close to empty or on a full charge for too long affects its ability to hold a charge, Fish said."Of course, you might struggle to find out the truth to that question," Fish said.Recurrent provides reports on EV battery health aimed at helping shoppers choose between cars.<h2>You can get up to $4,000 off thanks to federal tax credits</h2>At the start of last year, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/federal-state-electric-car-vehicle-tax-credits-rebates-qualify-2023-1">used-EV tax credit went into effect</a> as part of a larger incentive program in the Inflation Reduction Act. Automotive retail analysts described it as a welcome change for EV shoppers on a budget.To <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-tax-credit-suv-tesla-model-y-ford-mach-e-2023-2">qualify for the credit</a>, the vehicle must be purchased at a dealership so that the dealer can report the required information to the IRS.The buyer must be purchasing the vehicle for personal use and not for resale, must not be the original owner of the vehicle, must not be able to be claimed as a dependent, and must not have used any other clean-vehicle credit in the previous three years. Income caps for buyers range from $75,000 to $150,000, depending on their tax-filing status.The vehicle must have a sale price of $25,000 or less and must be at least two model years old.Many states also have tax incentives for purchasing EVs. Considering an electric vehicle? Experts explain how to pick one for your lifestyle and budget

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/worked-new-dollar-general-started-falling-apart-before-it-opened-2023-11">Dollar General</a>'s stock plunged nearly 30% after it reported worse-than-expected quarterly results.</li><li>It's a sign of how dire things have become for low-income shoppers.</li></ul>Things are getting worse for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-outlook-economy-inflation-cost-of-living-wealth-low-income-2024-6">US consumers</a>, and Dollar General is suffering as a result.The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dollar-tree-shoppers-angry-dollar-store-raises-prices-2024-4">dollar store chain</a> reported second-quarter comparable sales below analysts' expectations on Thursday. Dollar General also cut its sales growth expectations for the rest of the year, warning that its low-income customers have pulled back spending — and that things could get even worse.The quarter included a "weaker sales environment for our core consumer than we anticipated," CEO Todd Vasos said on the earnings call. About 60% of Dollar General's customers come from households with annual incomes of less than $35,000.The company's shares plunged as much as 30%.But it's not just Dollar General suffering. Competitor Dollar Tree also dropped about 10%. The reason: the news challenges a widely held assumption that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dollar-stores-slowdowns-because-of-economy-inflation-store-issues-2024-4">dollar stores do well in any economy</a>. Vasos told investors on an earnings call four years ago: "We do very good in good times, and we do fabulous in bad times." The 2008-era economic downturn was a case in point, with many middle-income consumers turning to dollar stores in hopes of saving money. But that doesn't appear to be happening — at the moment.Dollar General's key customers are stretched, Vasos said, citing a company survey. About 30% of respondents said they've maxed out at least one of their credit cards, while 25% said they expect to miss a bill payment in the next six months.Sales at Dollar General's stores slowed down particularly at the end of each of the last three calendar months, Vasos said, a sign that consumers are increasingly stretching their income to make it through to the next payday."The majority of them state that they feel worse off financially than they were six months ago" due to higher prices, softer employment levels, and increased borrowing costs, he commented.Foot traffic data suggest that customers are still coming into Dollar General stores, Vasos said. But they're spending less, especially on nice-to-have items like home decor, and focusing instead on buying essentials like food as well as some of the roughly 2,000 items priced at $1, he added.In response, Dollar General is cutting prices on more items. While that stands to increase what consumers spend at the retailer, it's likely to weigh on financial results for the rest of the year, executives said.Dollar General's troubles aren't entirely about the economy, though.The chain has spent the last year trying to improve its operations, including by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dollar-general-takes-action-messy-overstocked-stores-marks-down-items-2023-8">reducing excess inventory</a> sitting around its stores and reducing lost inventory, including from theft.Dollar General has also seen stiffer competition from other retailers, including <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-results-sales-profits-relief-retail-sector-2024-8">Walmart</a>. The Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer posted much stronger results earlier this month; execs said that they haven't seen the slowdown in consumer spending that others have.Walmart's success appears to have eaten into Dollar General's results, Vasos said on the call. "The guys down in Bentonville are doing a pretty nice job in garnering the available traffic that's out there from other retailers," he said.And these days, middle-class consumers don't appear to be trading down to dollar stores at a fast enough rate to make up for low-income consumers pulling back their spending, said Brian Yarbrough, a senior analyst at Edward Jones.While more affluent shoppers are trading down and looking for deals — by shopping at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nordstrom-rack-results-show-shoppers-are-in-for-deals-discounts-2024-8">off-price retailers</a> like Nordstrom Rack, for example — many aren't strapped enough to take the next step and shop at dollar stores, he said in an interview. Dimon spoke on a variety of topics related to how the government should be run and approach major problems. On Monday, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said that employees at his company would return to working in an office <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-ceo-return-to-office-mandate-5-days-week-2024-9">five days a week</a>, effectively returning to its pre-pandemic norm.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-requiring-return-to-office-rto-mandate">JPMorgan's own return-to-office policy</a> requires managing directors to be in the office five days a week. The bank's other employees must work in person at least three days a week.Last year, the Biden Administration pushed for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-admin-pushing-for-federal-workers-to-return-to-office-2023-8">federal employees to return to in-person</a> office work.Many federal workers have indeed returned to the office for at least part of the week. The exact split varies by government agency, though.Some Environmental Protection Agency workers, for instance, can spend as few as two days in the office per pay period or about four days a month, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://federalnewsnetwork.com/workforce/2024/08/an-updated-list-of-agencies-return-to-office-postures/">a list</a> compiled by the Federal News Network and updated last month.Other agencies, such as the Department of the Treasury and the Department of the Interior, require some employees to be in the office at least 50% of the time, according to the list.Only about half of federal employees have the option to work remotely, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/OMB-Report-to-Congress-on-Telework-and-Real-Property.pdf">a report</a> to Congress from the Office of Management and Budget last month. The other half "work entirely in person already," the report says.The amount of empty office space in DC remains at a historic high. Even as I'm writing this, the morning after the VMAs, I've repeatedly caught myself humming, "Kiss me, k-k-kiss me." The highlight was easily "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://youtu.be/98WtmW-lfeE?si=CYWecdg0SgVdh0kk">Teenage Dream</a>," the title track from Perry's 2010 album and one of the most perfectly constructed pop songs of all time. After the show ended hours later, I heard a girl say in a hushed, reverent tone, "Being so close to Katy Perry singing 'Teenage Dream' was… surreal." And it was. The sheer power of Perry's early discography on display last night was both her triumph and her downfall. Perry has timeless hits in her catalog. No one can take that away from her. But by mixing them into a medley with singles from "143," Perry's latest work sounds even more hollow and derivative by comparison. Perry's collaboration with Doechii, "I'm His, He's Mine," out tomorrow, had the misfortune of being sandwiched in between "ET" and "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://youtu.be/F57P9C4SAW4?si=1uUSYKvaJuKkFcsj">California Gurls</a>." There's nothing wrong with the duet per se, but it had the effect of an interlude — a forced hiatus before getting back to the stuff we all know and love. Perry and Doechii carefully executed their intimate, tabloid-baiting choreography, interlacing their legs (<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wap-grammys-cardi-b-complaints-fcc-megan-thee-stallion-2021-4">à la Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion</a>) and putting their faces close enough to kiss, as if they were trying to be shocking to distract from the song itself. Perry capped off the medley with "Lifetimes," a by-the-numbers dance song, which would've been an underwhelming closer even if it hadn't been preceded by the one-two punch of "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://youtu.be/tAp9BKosZXs?si=IXFxFuxwPJqv9AR_">I Kissed a Girl</a>" and "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://youtu.be/QGJuMBdaqIw?si=OTolE_WooKMpG6JY">Firework</a>." I would never recommend chasing fireworks with a plastic bag drifting through the wind. If Perry wanted to deliver an impressive spectacle and sing her heart out, then she most definitely succeeded. But if she aimed to prove that her new songs could hang with her beloved hits, I regret to report that she failed. He talked about how the rise of DTC spawned a new perception of value, and how marketers need to be strategic in planning their careers.The following Q&amp;A with Mehra has been edited for clarity.<h2>There have been a few high-profile examples of companies eliminating the chief marketing officer position. But you don't see this as a growing trend?</h2>Every time a CMO gets let go, or leaves, it's like, "Here's yet another company doing this.'"It's almost become clickbait fodder. I am really worried that we have divided ourselves within our industry over the last decade. And that we did this to ourselves. We're the ones clicking on all this stuff, talking about it, and propagating the myth.I don't think any of it is true, and my headline is that we're entering a new golden age of marketing. All the tools CMOs always wanted now exist, in ways that I have dreamed about my whole career. CMOs are needed more than ever. And I don't think marketing has ever been in a better spot in terms of how we can impact business.<h2>What's changed over the past 10 years to fuel this pessimism about the role of marketing and the CMO - is it a byproduct of the rise of performance marketing?</h2>By no means are traditional marketing tactics less important. Areas like brand management, media buying, consumer insights, measurement, and integrated marketing are all very important and will continue to be. Many of these skills were honed, perfected, and scaled by CPG's original brand builders and growth marketers. Go back 20-plus years, and CPG companies were the academy companies and Ivy League education for any aspiring future CMO.Then the DTC brands entered in the late 2000s and approached growth, brand-building, and go-to-market in totally new ways. DTC's coincided with the rise of Facebook, which democratized access to an unlimited total addressable market, and lowered barriers to entry for new brands to challenge industry leaders with pay-as-you-go media budgets. This ushered in the rise of performance marketing — though I prefer to call it direct response, as all marketing should be performative.As performance marketing began to scale with DTC brands, it brought along with it the proliferation of marketing technology, high velocity creative, focus on lifetime value, customer acquisition cost, and short-term attribution — all of which won a ton of favor with investors as the preferred and highest ROI way to drive growth for new brands. Brand marketing almost became taboo, a sin for those responsible marketers who focused on customer-acquisition cost as their primary metric. As a result of all this success, the CMOs of these DTC brands were rewarded with even bigger budgets, fueled by the long-lasting zero-interest-rate policy era, which continued this surge around the rise, importance, and attention on performance marketing. It was almost as if CPG marketers, the original celebrity rockstar CMOs, and DTC marketing leaders lived on different planets – East Coast vs West Coast – and ultimately brand versus performance became a major narrative in the industry.<h2>So how do these disparate marketing tracks come together? Can a CMO still strategically lead all parts of this fragmenting universe?</h2>The truth of the matter is that brand marketing and direct response marketing are all marketing — there is no competition.All marketing spending should be driving performance, just in different parts of the funnel that ultimately support each other. I call it "performance storytelling." The more we as CMOs and an industry can intentionally build our individual and collective skill sets across the entirety of today's marketing ecosystem, the more our industry will thrive. This brand versus performance marketing debate is just one aspect. CMOs are now technologists, analysts, content creators, storytellers, leaders, editors, strategists, and scientists. We build brands, we curate purpose, we drive growth, and we build for both the short and long term. We are firmly in the spotlight, every day, with every decision we make. We also must be technologists and the earliest adopters of many new growth-enabling tech platforms in our organizations. Just look at the rise and value we created as CMOs in the marketing technology industry over the past decade —we were the capital allocators of that renaissance. I firmly believe that we will also be the earliest at-scale adopters of artificial intelligence in our organizations, the next systemic change that is upon us as CMOs.It's on us to restore the reputation of the CMO in the C-suite and in board rooms across the globe. Nothing external can be blamed for affecting the reputation of the CMO — we did it to ourselves. Let's win back the narrative is what I say!<h2>How have you managed your career to avoid being pigeonholed?</h2>I believe we are living in the golden age of marketing. But to embrace this moment of tremendous evolution in our profession a career full of horizontal experiences, not traditional career ladders and job titles, is the key to staying relevant.I have taken plenty of risks and even took a few pay cuts along the way to learn as much as I could. Curiosity and the humility to admit what you still have to learn are key. I spent the first half of my career in the more legacy world of CPG, and I've spent the last decade in Silicon Valley on the tech and consumer DTC parts of the ecosystem. As I saw the world fracturing and dividing, I knew I didn't want to be stuck on one side or the other.My first "risky move", at least according to others, was in my early 30's. I thought I had "made it" and achieved my dreams as the global president of a multi-billion dollar division at Johnson &amp; Johnson consumer. And then, I got a call to move to Silicon Valley and join this company called Ancestry that was thinking of bringing this thing called consumer genetics and DNA into the world through a DTC business model. Pay cut number two, I was the global CMO of Walgreens Boots with thousands of people in my organization, and I left for a Series C startup with an 80% pay cut.I learned a ton, but that risk was cut short as the zero-interest-rate policy environment came to a screeching halt and affected so many smaller technology companies. But things happen for a reason, and because of the experiences I had curated for myself, I found a fit here at Chime. It's been one of the most rewarding and fulfilling periods of my career. Today, I sit as a board member of a very hot marketing AI company, and on a couple of public boards, including one phenomenal data-science-powered ad tech company, and a DTC brand, where I am also a member of the audit committee. All of this is an effort to remain relevant for as long as possible in my career. Being "dangerous" across the entire modern marketing ecosystem is so important to me, especially in a time of such fundamental shifts in our craft and profession. I want to be part of the solution.<h2>What advice do you give to those who aspire to become CMOs? What should they be doing to move their career in the right direction?</h2>I talk about managing your career like a jungle gym instead of a career ladder. Horizontal careers are the new lateral careers.I never think of myself as just a marketer. You need to be a P&amp;L leader who happens to play a role on the marketing team, and ultimately the team is about shareholder value creation — whether that's private or public value creation. Don't be defined as just a marketer if you want to be a CMO one day.There's also nothing wrong with focusing on the specialist careers we will need.At Chime, we're creating tracks where you can follow a specialist career and ultimately make the same money as a manager. It used to be you needed to manage people. But for some people, we want you to be the best at the Google algorithm on the planet.That's one way we'll eliminate this malaise in our industry — by respecting all the different tracks.
