<ul class="summary-list"><li>Mark Zuckerberg won praise from CEOs for open-sourcing Meta's AI model, Llama 3.1.</li><li>Zuckerberg's popularity seems to be on the rise as tech leaders applaud his open-source approach.</li></ul><p>If there were a Big Tech CEO popularity contest, Zuck might well be taking the crown right now.</p><p>The Meta chief is winning the admiration of CEOs of companies including Shopify and Perplexity. Even <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-finally-found-something-agree-with-mark-zuckerberg-on-2024-7">Elon Musk gave Zuck a rare nod of approval</a>.</p><p>What's sparking this praise? Meta's move to open source its biggest AI model yet: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://llama.meta.com">Llama 3.1</a>, which was released on Tuesday.</p><p>"It is impressive and Zuck does deserve credit for open-sourcing," Musk said in response to an <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1815842994479653194">X post</a>. Meanwhile, Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/tobi/status/1815782408593043811">applauded</a> Zuck and said Llama 3.1 is an "incredible gift."</p><p>Meta says Llama 3.1 outperforms rivals, including OpenAI, on certain benchmarks. </p><p>Alongside the reveal, Zuck laid his cards on the table about why Meta is pursuing an open-source approach in a <a target="_blank" href="https://about.fb.com/news/2024/07/open-source-ai-is-the-path-forward/">manifesto</a> published Tuesday that Paul Graham, cofounder of startup accelerator Y Combinator, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://x.com/paulg/status/1815790529298452814">called</a> "eloquent." <br /><br />Perplexity chief Aravind Srinivas <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/AravSrinivas/status/1815826820371300365">praised</a> Zuck's "well articulated" reasoning about not fearing the loss of a technical edge, noting that Meta can gain by letting developers use and improve its models.</p><p>As Grammarly CEO Rahul Roy-Chowdhury <a target="_blank" href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2023/12/ai-regulation-open-source/">pointed out</a> in December, open-sourcing AI models can benefit developers because it reduces the time and resources needed to develop new applications, making AI accessible beyond large tech companies. It also increases transparency, as third parties can audit and verify the datasets and codes of the models and, in theory, make products safer.</p><p>It's the opposite tactic of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-chatgpt-openai-ceo-career-net-worth-ycombinator-prepper-2023-1">Sam Altman's OpenAI</a>. Zuck made a quip about its closed-source approach in a recent Bloomberg TV interview: "It's a somewhat ironic thing to have an organization that's named OpenAI but is sort of the leader in building closed AI models. It's not necessarily bad, but it's kind of a little funny."</p><p>Zuckerberg also admitted there's a real possibility that Big Tech firms might be "over-building" and overspending in the AI arms race, but suggested this might be rational considering where the technology is headed.<br /><br />But Zuck's plaudits aren't just for open-sourcing. He's been doing other cool things lately that have scored him some serious internet points, like posting a video of him <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-celebrates-july-4th-surfing-tuxedo-beer-flag-springsteen-2024-7">surfing whilst wearing a tux </a>on Independence Day, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-leaning-into-his-version-of-mob-chic-2024-4">rocking a chain</a>, and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerbergs-style-evolution-in-photos-2024-6">showing off his newfound drip</a>.</p><p>Zuck is definitely having a moment right now.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Mark Zuckerberg dropped an F-bomb while discussing closed vs. open-source AI during a Monday conversation.</li><li>The Meta CEO let out the expletive while in conversation with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.</li></ul><p>Meta CEO <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg">Mark Zuckerberg</a> dropped an impassioned expletive while discussing open-source AI with Nvidia CEO <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nvidia-jensen-huang-chipmaker-cofounder-ceo-wealth-net-worth-ai-2023-5">Jensen Huang</a> during a live conversation on Monday.</p><p>The two tech leaders discussed the future of artificial intelligence and virtual worlds at SIGGRAPH 2024, an industry conference on computer graphics and interactive techniques.</p><p><span>Zuckerberg believes that one day, every company will have its own AI — much like they have their own social media profiles — and Huang praised that notion, calling Llama 2 "probably the biggest event in AI last year."</span></p><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-meta-llama-ai-model-praise-open-source-musk-2024-7">Zuckerberg got excited talking about the open-source AI approach</a>, describing his preference for open models as "selfish" and fueled by a desire to ensure Meta can build the necessary technology the company needs to deliver its social experiences.</p><p>"There have just been too many things I've tried to build and told 'nah, you can't really build that' by the platform provider, that at some level I'm just like, 'Nah, fuck that.'" <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-peak-summertime-zuck-2024-7">Zuckerberg</a> said Monday. "For the next generation, we're going to build all the way down."</p><p>"There goes our broadcast opportunity," Huang joked in response to Zuckerberg's F-bomb.</p><p>"Yeah, sorry," Zuckerberg chuckled. "We were doing OK for like 20 minutes, but get me talking about closed platforms, and I get angry."</p><p>The CEO's comments come just days after Meta announced <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://ai.meta.com/blog/meta-llama-3-1/">Llama 3.1</a>, its biggest AI model yet, which will be open-sourced — meaning users are able to access, modify, and distribute the source code.</p><p>"I'm kind of hopeful that in the next generation of computing, we're going to return to a zone where the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-calls-out-apple-closed-model-restrictions-ai-2024-7">open ecosystem wins</a> and is the leading one again," Zuckerberg said onstage Monday.</p><p>Soon after revealing Llama 3.1 last week, Zuckerberg published a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://about.fb.com/news/2024/07/open-source-ai-is-the-path-forward/">manifesto</a> explaining why he believes open-source is "the path forward" for AI.</p><p>In contrast to companies that have taken a closed-source approach — <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-elon-musk-agree-on-openai-name-criticism-2024-7">namely OpenAI</a> — Zuck said open source is quickly closing the gap and pointed to the cheaper production costs and higher performance metrics that open-source AI delivers.</p><p>Several industry leaders, including Zuckerberg's <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-vs-mark-zuckerberg-feud-history-2021-1">sometimes-nemesis Elon Musk</a>, praised Meta for open-sourcing Llama 3.1.</p><p>Open-sourcing AI models reduce the time and resources required to create new applications, as well as increase transparency and safety, Grammarly CEO Rahul Roy-Chowdhury <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2023/12/ai-regulation-open-source/">argued</a> in December.</p><p>"There will always be open and closed. I'm not a zealot on this," Zuckerberg said on Monday. "Not everything we do is open. But in general, there's a lot of value if the software, especially, is open.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Tech workers have had to learn a hard lesson: layoffs can happen at companies that are fine too.</li><li>Companies from Grammarly to Microsoft have laid people off in 2024 despite healthy finances. </li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/layoffs-sweeping-us-these-are-companies-making-cuts-2024#microsoft-is-reducing-its-headcount-by-1-900-at-activision-xbox-and-zeni-max-11"><u>This layoff season</u></a> has taught tech workers a tough lesson: they can still lose their jobs even if their company is doing fine.</p><p>The latest example of this came last week as typing assistant startup Grammarly — last valued at $13 billion — announced it would cut around 230 roles as part of a "business restructuring."</p><p>Rahul Roy-Chowdhury, who was appointed Grammarly CEO last year, made it clear that the cuts were "not a cost-cutting exercise." In a memo to staff, Roy-Chowdhury insisted that the company's "financial position is, and remains, strong."</p><p>Instead, the layoffs had been conducted as a means of recalibrating resources for “the AI-enabled workplace of the future.” </p><p>For Grammarly, a business that offers users writing assistance, that means adjusting to a new age of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/openai-personal-assistant-ai-age-chatgpt-2024-2"><u>AI chatbots and personal agents</u></a> that could act as competitors.</p><p>Layoffs, then, were an unfortunate consequence of that adjustment.</p><p>“As we strengthen our focus toward driving the AI-enabled workplace and deepen our technical investments in AI, we will need a different mix of capabilities and skillsets,” Roy-Chowdhury told employees.</p><p>“We also need to redesign our organization to improve the quality and speed of collaboration — and that means, among other things, restructuring roles and co-locating certain teams.”</p><p>The Grammarly cuts serve as a reminder that employees aren't just at risk of losing their jobs at businesses burning through cash.</p><p>Grammarly is not alone in this approach. Since the start of the year, 141 tech companies have made layoffs affecting 34,250 workers, <a target="_blank" href="https://layoffs.fyi/"><u>according to online tracker Layoffs.fyi</u></a>. For context, this year's batch of layoffs still pales in comparison to last year, when almost 140,000 had lost their jobs by February.</p><p>That was a time when many startups and Big Tech players were seeking to correct the excessive hiring made over the pandemic and curb spending in a high-inflation environment. Many at the time, like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-reality-labs-metaverse-lost-1b-more-than-year-ago-2023-2"><u>Meta, had hugely loss-making divisions to worry about.</u></a></p><p>In many instances, the smaller scale of the layoffs hitting tech companies this year reflects how much of the decision-making process this time around is more about fine-tuning. </p><p>Discord CEO Jason Citron, for instance, told employees last month that a lot of its hiring in recent years — hiring that increased its headcount five times over since 2020 — had resulted in an organization that was “less efficient,” <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/discord-ceo-blames-tech-layoffs-company-growth-2024-1"><u>leading to the decision to layoff 17% of staff.</u></a></p><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.theverge.com/2024/1/11/24034705/discord-layoffs-17-percent-employees"><u>As The Verge noted</u></a>, the decision to correct the inefficiencies was made despite the company seeming to not be in “dire financial straits.” In other words, the company, last valued at $15 billion, grew, but at a faster pace than it needed to. That in no way means it’s in bad shape. </p><p>The trend might be even clearer when looking at one of tech’s big winners of the last year.</p><p>Last month, days before<a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=a49f2d5509b3f6d3a3700ae8d15291963edc11c11346ad59d39d9046b6e25d66&amp;postID=65ca1801236d0f5affe0a551&amp;postSlug=layoffs-happening-at-tech-firms-that-are-doing-just-fine-2024-2&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Finvestor%2Fearnings%2Ffy-2024-q2%2Fpress-release-webcast"><u> Microsoft reported a record $62 billion in revenue</u></a> for the final quarter of 2023, the tech giant cut 1,900 roles from its Activision Blizzard and Xbox divisions.</p><p>This is a company that’s doing anything but struggling right now, with its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-investing-billions-into-chatgpt-creator-openai-partnership-2023-1"><u>bet on OpenAI</u></a>, the launch of the AI Copilot tool and strong demand for cloud computing helping it grow. It made layoffs nonetheless.</p>

Tech layoffs are hitting companies that are doing just fine 

<strong><br />Piyush Goyal: Defence budget at a record high at over ₹3 trillion for 2019-20 announced <br /><br /></strong>Industry experts point out that India’s defence budget 2018 compares with the top five in the world. <br /><br />In fact, it overtook that of UK’s for the first time in history, says a report by a global think-tank based in London. These studies mark a major change in the military priorities of the country and a major shift in the military balance between the two countries under citation. <br /><br />In 2017, India overtook the UK and became the fifth largest spender on defence in the world by allotting $52.5 billions, which was up from the $51.1 billion allotted in the budget 2016. These figures are brought out for a comparative study by the Military Balance Sheet 2018 report released by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).<br /><br />Presenting a sharp contrast, the UK’s defence budget showed a fall from $52.5 billion in 2016 to $50.7 billion in 2017. <br /><br />Commenting about the trend noticed with regard to the defence budgets of India and UK, IISS Senior Fellow for South Asia, Rahul Roy-Chaudhury says, "This represents a key shift in the military balance between India and the UK, with India allocating more capabilities to develop its regional resources than the UK in a global context."<br /><br />The report also notes that while India is seen investing a great deal to modernize its military capabilities and infrastructure, China, the globe’s second largest defence budget following the US is seen far ahead of the march allotting three times more resources to its military augmentation at $150.5 billion. <br /><br />The real spending of China on its defence capabilities shows a phenomenal increase of 25% percent in 2016-17 while that of India increased only by 2.4%<br /><br />Roy-Chaudhury notes, "Post-Dokalam, India's military balance with China continues to be significantly in China's favor. Since 2000, China has built more submarines, destroyers, frigates and corvettes than Japan, South Korea and India combined. China will continue to dominate the region militarily and seek to challenge the US in the region as well.”<br /><br />Analysts say that the Chinese army has recruited more than 600,000 personnel than that of India. <br /><br />The Chinese air force has about 1,200 tactical air crafts to compare with just 785 reported to be part of the Indian air force. China has 55 more frigates, cruisers and destroyers than India. <br /><br />IISS says, "The overall capability of the (Indian) army is limited by inadequate logistics, and shortages of ammunition and spare parts. Development and procurement programs across the services are aimed at replacing ageing equipment, but many projects have experienced significant delays and cost overruns, particularly indigenous systems.”<br /><br />To sum up, the report has found that China and Russia with their fourth largest <keyword id="107484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="defense-budget">defense budget</keyword> of the world at $61.2 billion seem to challenge the US’s military supremacy. Hence the US and its allies can no longer depend on the strategic advantage they have been enjoying so far. <br /><br />Saudi Arabia’s defence budget is at an annual spending of $76.7 billion, which becomes the third topmost spending in the whole world. <br /><br />So, to position India’s defence spending among the world’s topmost defence budgets, we can line up the countries in the fashion: US, China, Saudi Arabia, Russia and India.<br />

"It's saved me on many occasions. And it keeps getting better."</span></p><p>Whenever you sign in to a website, Chrome asks if you want to save your password for that site. It's super useful if you have a lot of accounts. Here's <a href="https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95606?hl=en">how you can turn it on. </a></p><p>But, most people know about <em>that</em> feature. </p><p><span>"One less known fact about it is that if you're creating an account for the first time on some site, it can even create a secure password for you (and then save it so you never need to remember it)," Roy-Chowdhury says. </span></p><p>That's the real secret sauce. Generally, people are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-most-popular-passwords-of-2015-2016-1">really bad at picking passwords</a>. And even if they do manage to select a strong password, many will often use the same one over and over for different accounts, which is <a href="http://xkcd.com/792/">a really bad idea.</a></p><p>Chrome's autogeneration feature ensures that you have a super safe password that you'll never need to remember. </p><p>As of now, this feature isn't automatically turned on for most users.
