This was the ‘debut’ that every watcher and non-watcher of politics had been waiting for! The biggest ‘watch-out-for’ moment in Indian politics in a while, atleast ever since <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> lay claim to the primeminsitership of India. In fact, if like the IPL, the <keyword id="6354721" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="parliament">parliament</keyword> sessions could be sponsored (no, I am not committing blasphemy by saying that), this particular ‘match’ would have received the highest sponsorship! The event- <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> <keyword id="797620" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="scion">scion</keyword>, <keyword id="5268" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rahul-Gandhi">Rahul Gandhi</keyword>’s ‘speaking debut’ during a parliament session. Yes, you heard that right. The first time ever that Rahul Gandhi, touted as heir apparent to the Congress <keyword id="2540" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="President">President</keyword>’s throne, was going to speak in the Parliament, on an issue that has become almost an Achilles’ heel for the <keyword id="6387077" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi-government">Narendra Modi government</keyword>. 
 
An announcement to that regard-the fact he would be speaking on the floor-was made three hours in advance. A whip was issued by his party, the age-old Congress party, for all MPs to be present in a show of strength and solidarity to their heir-apparent’s debut in the Parliament. 
So, even as his mother met hordes of farmers from across the country at her home in 10 Janpath, Rahul baba took to the floor. It was almost like a workaholic mother, missing out on her son’s first ever rock performance! Only that the performance wasn’t entirely ‘rockstar-like’. 
Yes, this was Rahul 2.0, a new improved Gandhi scion, freshly returned from where ever it is that he went to ‘meditate’ and ‘chill’. Smirking, taunting and poking fun at his opponents, even taking as many as 11 jibes at the political hawk that Modi is known to be. 
 
Of the many wisecracks were some of these jewels: ‘You came to power promising growth, but done nothing.’ ‘It’s what the BJP does best. Say three different, contradictory things, and claim all the three to be true.’ ‘This government is for the rich. This government is trying to help its industrial friends. This government is for the suited booted.’ ‘More than 60% of the country depends on agriculture. Don’t harm the farmers, because tomorrow they will come back and harm you.’ 
 
Smart political one-liners, maybe, what he definitely lacked was the depth, the political acumen of say a Narendra Modi, his opponent-in-chief, who has a retort ready for every sticky question, who can mold every negative situation into his advantage. However what was definitely changed to his advantage was his new-found confidence, the fact that he had come well-prepared (the stack of papers he was reading out of was more than proof!), and the fact that clearly there is more to come. 
 
One did get the feeling that the offensive has just begun and Rahul baba has finally grown up and turned into the rightful ‘crusader’ of the farmers, the people who represent more than 67% of the population. So, if day 1 of this parliament session were anything to go by, the next few weeks could actually shadow the entertainment factor of even the on going IPL, Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma, Dhoni’s little daughter Ziva, Shah Rukh Khan and his cherub AbRam et al! So let the games begin!

NEW DELHI: <keyword id="58687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> is considering a suggestion to field former Madhya Pradesh CM <keyword id="42642" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Uma-Bharti">Uma Bharti</keyword> and TV actor and Rajya Sabha MP <keyword id="6612" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Smriti-Irani">Smriti Irani</keyword> against <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> president <keyword id="689" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi">Sonia Gandhi</keyword> and <keyword id="5268" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rahul-Gandhi">Rahul Gandhi</keyword> in Rae Bareli and Amethi respectively. 
 
Party sources said a decision could be expected on Friday itself as BJP considers where to turn up the heat on the Congress's prestigious seats. 
 <keyword id="6464304" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Senior-BJP-leader">Senior BJP leader</keyword> M Venkaiah Naidu confirmed the party had received suggestions and was considering them. Uma Bharti was earlier given a ticket for Jhansi. 
 The suggestion that Bharti should take on Sonia in Rae Bareli was made by yoga guru <keyword id="6355107" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Baba-Ramdev">Baba Ramdev</keyword>, and has found traction among those who feel the sanyasin's entry in the fray will help pin Sonia down in her constituency. 
 
This school of thought has been encouraged by the assessment that the anti-Congress mood may have rendered even Sonia and Rahul vulnerable: an estimate strengthened by Congress's desperate wooing of erstwhile Amethi royal Sanjay Singh and his wife Amita. 
 According to BJP sources, Sanjay was ready to cross over before Congress lured him back by offering a RS seat from <keyword id="6354915" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Assam">Assam</keyword> 
 
This was followed by his wife being given the Congress ticket for the neighbouring Sultanpur seat. 
 
However BJP sources also indicated that only one of the two — either Bharti or Irani — could take the field against the Gandhis. 
 "There is no point in fielding two <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Women">women</keyword> in adjoining constituencies," said a party source. 
 
Moreover, there are also signs to suggest that Bharti may not like to give up her ticket for Jhansi. The constituency bordering MP is considered to be safer. 
 
However, the party does not seem inclined to give her two seats in the same state.

In what is expected to be an extremely volatile and charged period, the second part of the <keyword id="6354721" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="parliament">parliament</keyword>'s budget session has just kicked-off today. This session will be packed with some of the most controversial bills that will be tabled in the parliament-the <keyword id="408329" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="land-acquisition-bill">land acquisition bill</keyword>, the black money bill and the scheduled caste/tribe bill among several others. 
 The opposition, which seems to have gathered momentum post <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> scion, <keyword id="5268" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rahul-Gandhi">Rahul Gandhi</keyword>'s return, launched a massive offensive yesterday against the hugely controversial land acquisition bill. Rahul, yesterday proclaimed, amidst a packed Ramlila maidan that the BJP government was out to fleece the poor farmers. He had said yesterday that if the bill in the current form were allowed to be passed, not only would the government take away the farmer's lands, but would also not provide them adequate compensation. Joining the chorus are other opposition parties including the Janata Parivar as well as the CPI. 
 However, diffusing all fears of a charged up and mostly destructive parliament session, <keyword id="71" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Prime-Minister">Prime Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> said today that this session will be full of 'outcomes', adding that the productivity of the Parliament had risen '125%' since his government took charge. PM Modi's statement was duly supported by Parliamentary Affairs Minister, <keyword id="74369" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Venkaiah-Naidu">Venkaiah Naidu</keyword>, who said given the strong presence of the NDA in the parliament will ensure the ride through this session won't be brought to a jarring halt, even though it might have to brace for a few rough patches. Naidu has ordered all BJP MPs to be present in their House throughout. 
 
Addressing party MPs at a workshop, where they were briefed about the government's pro-poor measures, Modi had said yesterday that they would have received feedback about the Centre's work, especially budget, and can join the session with more focus. "In a way the second phase of the session is stronger because MPs come back with more focus. I am sure this half would be full of quality debates and outcomes," he said. 
 
However, despite Modi's attempt to brush aside any signs of a possible disruption of the parliament, the government will have its task cut out in the Rajya Sabha, where they lack a clear majority. BJP and its alliances occupy only 66 seats in the Rajya Sabha, with the half-way mark at 122. Typically, a bill is first placed in the lower house of the Parliament for debating, post which it is 'voted' upon. It is then placed in the higher house, the Rajya Sabha, where a similar debate takes place followed by a 'vote'. For a bill to pass both hurdles, and be turned into an 'Act, both houses will have to 'vote' it in with a clear 2/3rd majority. While, BJP has the numbers in the lower house, it is in the Rajya Sabha, where it will face a tough fight!

It is a known fact that our country is governed by politicians who are comedians in disguise. From making every Indian laugh at their utterly false promises to disrupting the Parliament day after day and being involved in scams of massive proportions, our politicians are guilty of indulging in them all. 
 
While they might not excel at what they’ve been elected to do (no surprises there), we can’t help but admit that our politicians do have some hidden talents. Unfortunately, they are unable to hone these talents due to the immense burden of governing a country on their shoulders. (also alternatively known as the burden of enforcing a ban on everything we’ve ever loved and cared for) 
 
To make things easier for our beloved politicians in case they ever decide to take a leap from the world of politics, also known as the world of looting the taxpayer’s money, Business Insider draws up a list of alternate career suggestions for eight ministers depending on what their skill sets are.

The President of Bharatiya Janata Party Amit Shah is best known for his event management skills. Eight politicians who should give these alternate careers a serious thought

Indian banks have technically written off a staggering amount of Rs 68,607 crore due from 50 top wilful defaulters, including absconding diamantaire Mehul Choksi, according to a reply under RTI from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Prominent RTI activist Saket Gokhale had filed an RTI query with the RBI seeking details of the 50 top wilful defaulters and their current loan status till February 16. "I filed this RTI because Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur had refused to reply to this starred question asked in the Parliament by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in the last Budget Session on February 16," Gokhale told IANS. Disclosing what the government didn't, the RBI's Central Public Information Officer <keyword id="135505" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Abhay-Kumar">Abhay Kumar</keyword> provided the replies on Saturday (April 24), with several startling revelations in the 'diamond-studded list', said Gokhale. The RBI said that this amount (Rs 68,607 crore) comprising outstanding and the amounts technically/prudentially written off till September 30, 2019. An inadvertent error had crept in a previous version of the report, which has now been now corrected. "The apex bank also declined to provide the relevant information on overseas borrowers citing a Supreme Court judgement of December 16, 2015," Gokhale told IANS. Topping the list is Choksi's scam-hit company, Gitanjali Gems Limited, which owed Rs.5,492 crore, besides other group companies, Gili India Ltd and Nakshatra Brands Ltd, which had taken loans of Rs 1,447 crore and Rs 1,109 crore, respectively. The others in this category include: Kudos Chemie, Punjab (Rs.2,326 crore), Baba Ramdev and Balkrishna's group company Ruchi Soya Industries Ltd., Indore (Rs.2,212 crore), and <keyword id="265518" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zoom-Developers">Zoom Developers</keyword> Pvt. Ltd., Gwalior (Rs.2,012 crore). There are 18 companies in the Rs.1K-segment with some prominent names like Harish R. Mehta's Ahmedabad-based Forever Precious Jewellery &amp; Diamonds Pvt. Ltd. (Rs.,1962 crore), and absconder liquor baron Vijay Mallya's defunct <keyword id="6373962" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="kingfisher-airlines">Kingfisher Airlines</keyword> Ltd. (Rs 1,943 crore). Another 25 companies fall in the sub-1K-crore category with outstandings ranging from Rs 605 crore to Rs 984 crore, either individually or as group companies. Six among the 50 top wilful defaulters are connected with the glittering diamond and/or gold jewellery industries. "A majority of them have defaulted prominent nationalist banks over the past several years and many of them are either absconding or facing action by various probe agencies and some are under litigation," Gokhale said. Senior Supreme Court advocate <keyword id="195903" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mukul-Rohatgi">Mukul Rohatgi</keyword> has been appointed the new <keyword id="43805" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Attorney-General">Attorney General</keyword> of the country. Rohatgi was the front-runner for the post as he is considered to be close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 
 
“My priority would be to streamline the litigation process and cut down litigation between government departments and public sector undertakings. The new government will co-operate in this aspect as this government wants to change a lot,” said Rohatgi. 
 
Rohatgi was the BJP’s lawyer and defended the party in several cases, including the Babri Masjid demolition case. He also defended the BJP general secretary, Varun Gandhi, in a case regarding his alleged provocative speech in Uttar Pradesh in 2011. Only recently, the senior lawyer appeared for the yoga guru Baba Ramdev in a case related to his ‘honeymoon’ comment against Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. 
 Rohatgi had served as Additional Solicitor General in the Vajpayee government. He is also considered to be close to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Law Minister <keyword id="6354886" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Ravi-Shankar-Prasad">Ravi Shankar Prasad</keyword>. 
 
“They are my good friends. They will help me in my endeavour,” said Rohatgi about the ministers.

 All-rounder Hardik Pandya's last-over heroics helped <keyword id="13880" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mumbai-Indians">Mumbai Indians</keyword> recover from a mediocre position to post a healthy 184/8 against <keyword id="3315697" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rising-Pune-Supergiant">Rising Pune Supergiant</keyword> (RPS) in the second game of the 2017 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium here on Thursday. 
 
Bengal medium pacer Ashoke Dinda was the culprit for the home side conceding 30 runs in the final over when Hardik (35 not out) hammered the right-armer for four sixes (including three consecutive) and a four to change the course of the game. 
 
Earlier, South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who went unsold in the auctions and was a late addition to the Pune squad, brought the hosts back into the game with three quick wickets after the Mumbai opening duo of Jos Buttler (38) and Parthiv Patel (19) added 45 runs for the opening wicket. 
 
Introduced in the fifth over, Tahir struck in his second ball when he bowled Parthiv round his legs before packing Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma (3) and Buttler in his next over to reduce Mumbai to 62/3. 
 
Rohit, who has been out of action for almost five months, was slow on his feet and it was enough for Tahir to break through his defence. One ball later, Tahir trapped the dangerous Buttler in front although television replays later showed that the Englishman had got a thick inside edge. 
 
Before his dismissal, Buttler lived up to his billing, milking his English teammate and IPL-10's costliest buy Ben Stokes (Rs 14.5 crore) for two consecutive sixes and then dispatching rookie Rajasthan medium-pacer Deepak Chahar for a four and a six off back-to-back deliveries. His 19-ball knock was laced with three hits to the fence and as many maximums. 
 
After the strategic time-out, Pune skipper Steve Smith introduced veteran all-rounder Rajat Bhatia, who responded well by taking a simple return catch to pack Ambati Rayudu (10) before dismissing Krunal Pandya (3) cheaply. 
 
Australian leggie Adam Zampa then added to the misery for the visitors by picking the crucial wicket of Nitish Rana (34), comfortably caught by Bhatia at deep midwicket. 
 
Rana looked good for his 28-ball knock, consisting a four and two sixes, but it was the 30-run fourth-wicket stand with Rayudu and 18 runs with Keiron Pollard (27) that mattered more. 
 Pollard, who was dropped by <keyword id="6397" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dhoni">Dhoni</keyword> on 22, struggled to get the big shots before falling to a stunning running catch by Mayank Agarwal at the long-on boundary off Stokes. 
 
The West Indian struck three boundaries and a six in his 17-ball innings as he added 21 runs for the seventh wicket with Hardik Pandya. 
 
Hardik then added 37 runs for the eighth wicket with New Zealander Tim Southee (7) to put Mumbai in a commanding position.

 Rajya Sabha <keyword id="5509" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Member-of-Parliament">Member of Parliament</keyword> <keyword id="205969" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajeev-Chandrasekhar">Rajeev Chandrasekhar</keyword>, who had earlier submitted his counter comments to the submissions made by Telecom Companies to the TRAI Consultation Paper on “Regulatory Framework for OTT Services, points out that the erroneous claims made by Telecom companies, that Over The Top Services such as <keyword id="6377887" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Skype">Skype</keyword> and <keyword id="790242" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="WhatsApp">Whatsapp</keyword> have impacted their revenues and therefore, their capacity to make <keyword id="6362476" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="investments">investments</keyword> into the Telecom Sector are unjustifiable. He states that such claims “do not justify any costs or discrimination to be borne by the Internet consumer” and that “no discussion on viability can cause Telcos/Internet Access Providers to become a gatekeeper of the Internet.” 
 Challenging the claims made by <keyword id="15492" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword> in their submission, which cites the example of “<keyword id="74266" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apple-Inc">Apple Inc</keyword> deciding what software is allowed on their devices”, to make a case for a non –neutral Internet, Chandrasekhar has said, “Apple Inc’s ecosystem is a propriety ecosystem that is privately owned while Internet is an open ecosystem and has no owners. It is precisely to avoid the conversion of this open and fair internet into a proprietary, Telco gatekeeped set of <keyword id="589972" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Islands">islands</keyword> on the Internet, that the consumers require Net Neutrality in India.” He further states, “Vodafone must be thanked for making available to the consumers and to the public, this desire of theirs to convert the Internet to an Apple Inc like closed system. I have referred to this as the Cabelization of the Internet and Net Neutrality prevents that from happening.” 
 
Now, this makes one wonder if counter comments on Net Neutrality in India would ever come to a close, but wait, there is some hope. By tomorrow i.e. 8th of May all stakeholders would be submitting their counter comments on the issue to the <keyword id="30356" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom-Regulatory-Authority-of-India">Telecom Regulatory Authority of India</keyword>, which would then deliver their recommendations to the <keyword id="6493697" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom-Ministry">Telecom Ministry</keyword> shortly. In the interim, the <keyword id="116246" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Telecommunications">Department of Telecommunications</keyword>’ consultation on Net Neutrality is also underway, and according to a statement by the <keyword id="46149" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom-minister">Telecom Minister</keyword>, is expected to be released in the last week of May. 
 
With the Consultation process coming to a close, the focus now shifts to the Government – whose decision on Net Neutrality and the issue of regulating Over The Top Services shall impact the Digital India program – which experts believe, requires an enabling, open policy ecosystem to be successful. One must note, over 11 lakh Indian consumers had earlier written to TRAI, in protest of their one sided consultation paper, which suggested that OTT players be brought under a regulatory framework.
