Pakistani opposition leader <keyword id="14676" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Imran-Khan">Imran Khan</keyword> has given a call for a shut down in <keyword id="3002" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Islamabad">Islamabad</keyword> next week and the news has already wiped off $3.5 billion from the Pakistan’s stock market. 
 
"Since hitting its record high on October 20, 2016, the benchmark-100 index has retreated 1,558.64 points, down 3.75% during the course of five trading sessions that wiped off over Rs 353.65 billion," The Express Tribune newspaper wrote. 
 Imran has earlier successfully led shut down protests in the latter half of 2014. The selloff in the stock market halted the 26.6% gain seen in the KSE-100 index - akin to India's Sensex - in fewer than 10 months. And the push to sell has only increased since <keyword id="2346210" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pakistan-Awami-Tehreek">Pakistan Awami Tehreek</keyword> chairman <keyword id="3791272" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="allama-tahir-ul-qadri">Allama Tahir ul Qadri</keyword> said he will join PTI's protest. 
 "Increasing political uncertainty, as (the) date of PTI protests in Islamabad approaches, remains the main reason of nervousness among investors. The situation is exacerbated with religious parties joining the protest," said <keyword id="3791676" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="muhammad-shamoon-tariq">Muhammad Shamoon Tariq</keyword>, a partner at the Sweden-based Tundra Fonder, which has assets under management in Pakistan worth $150 million, to The Express Tribune. 
 
Tariq feels that there are few other important developments on the political front that are scaring the investors. 
 "Markets are always scared of uncertainty and in the current protest call of PTI, no one is very sure of the outcome. The timing of these protests is also significant as the new <keyword id="15350" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Army">Army</keyword> chief's appointment is still pending," Tariq told the Pakistani newspaper, referring to the upcoming end of tenure of General <keyword id="1953535" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raheel-Sharif">Raheel Sharif</keyword>. 
 
"Political noise always has a greater impact on equities than any other news flow. The locking down of the capital where all the government machinery, foreign diplomats and foreign institutions reside is certainly the most important factor in the investors' minds right now," he further added.

Imran Khan’s protest plans wipes off $3.5 billion from Pakistan’s Stock Market

On Monday, <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword>'s army chief said that he would step down at the end of his three-year term in November according to the military's public relations wing, breaking a precedent of military leaders seeking to extend their terms. 
 General <keyword id="1953535" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Raheel-Sharif">Raheel Sharif</keyword> is considered by many to be Pakistan's most powerful man. 
 
Since he took office in 2013, the army has launched aerial and ground assaults against Islamist insurgent strongholds near the Afghan border in the northwest, earning the military bro ad support from a Pakistani population tired of militant violence. 
 
Critics say the crackdown has been selective, going after some militant groups, but leaving others intact. 
 
Elements of Pakistan's army have in the past been accused of tacitly supporting Islamist armed groups that launch attacks in Afghanistan and India as a way to pressure both neighbours. The general has thrown his support behind elected Prime Minister <keyword id="6576" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nawaz-Sharif">Nawaz Sharif</keyword> during anti-government protests, while at the same time solidifying the military's hold over national security and foreign policy. 
 
General Sharif has also presided over a security crackdown in Karachi, the country's largest city, which has sharply reduced murder rates but drawn protests from opposition politicians who say their activists have been targeted. 
 
Under his watch, the military has been give n authority to try civilians suspected of terrorism in secret military courts. 
 General Sharif is said to have been personally involved in efforts to bring the Afghan <keyword id="16945" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Taliban">Taliban</keyword> into peace talks with Afghanistan, though those efforts have stalled. 
 
Speculation that General Sharif would seek to extend his tenure for another term was baseless, the army's public relations wing said in a series of tweets issued on Monday. 
 
"The Pakistan Army is a great institution. I don't believe in extension," he was quoted as saying. 
 
General Sharif's decision would represent a win for democratic institutions, but raises questions on the future of campaigns against militants. No obvious candidate to succeed him has yet emerged. 
 
General Sharif pledged that efforts to combat terrorism "will continue with full vigor and resolve" after he retired, the army tweets said. 
 Pakistan's past two military chiefs had sought extensions of their terms instead of stepping down, with General <keyword id="44240" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pervez-Musharraf">Pervez Musharraf</keyword> staging a coup to topple Nawaz Sharif during a previous term as prime minister.

Although the country has never won a war against <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Pakistan%27s+Army+Chief+General+Raheel+Sharif+">Pakistan's Army Chief General Raheel Sharif</a> has warned India again of 'unbearable cost' in case of war. While speaking at an event organised by army at its headquarters in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Rawalpindi+">Rawalpindi</a> on Sunday to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1965 war with India, he said his troops are ready to tackle any long or short misadventure by the "enemy". 
 
"Let me reiterate that our armed forces stand fully capable to defeat all sorts of external aggression. If the enemy ever resorts to any misadventure, regardless of its size and scale - short or long - it will have to pay an unbearable cost," he said. 
 
The remarks were a pointed response to a statement by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Indian+Army+Chief+General+Dalbir+Singh+Suhag+">Indian Army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag</a> who said last week that Indian Army was prepared for "swift, short nature of future wars". 
 
"Armed forces of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/5-Parliament-attacks-across-the-globe-that-shook-everyone/articleshow/47787303.cms">Pakistan</a> are fully capable of dealing with all types of internal and external threats, may it be conventional or sub-conventional; whether it is cold start or hot start. We are ready," said General Raheel. 
 
This time the reference was towards India's cold start doctrine of war. 
 Terming <keyword id="6354495" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword> as "unfinished agenda of partition", he said that it should be resolved according to <keyword id="603346" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="UN-Resolution">UN resolution</keyword> which calls for plebiscite to decide its future. 
 
He also warned that Kashmir cannot be out in the back-burner. 
 The remarks come against the backdrop of heightened tensions and cross-border firing between Indian and Pakistani troops along the <keyword id="6355098" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="LoC">LoC</keyword> recently. 
 
"I reiterate the resolve that we shall not relent until all <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/5-Parliament-attacks-across-the-globe-that-shook-everyone/articleshow/47787303.cms">terrorists</a>, their financiers, abettors, facilitators and sympathisers are brought to justice," he said. 
 
He also assured <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Afghanistan+">Afghanistan</a> of support in creating peace and said that <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> made "concerted and sincere efforts for bringing peace in Afghanistan but certain inimical forces are bent upon undermining our efforts."

Pakistan does it again! Its army chief warns India of 'unbearable cost' in case of war

The US has told <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=pakistan">Pakistan</a> to act on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Pakistan-on-hanging-spree-Terrorism-still-remains-unaddressed/articleshow/46675568.cms">terror</a> safe havens, especially the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=haqqani+network">Haqqani network</a> responsible for major attacks on American installations in Afghanistan. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=susan+rice">US National Security Advisor Susan Rice</a>, who was on a day-long Pakistan visit, told top Pakistani leaders to promote regional peace and stability in the country. 
 
While appreciating Pakistan’s crackdown in North Waziristan, Rice said Pakistan should take on the Haqqani network. 
 
Rice told top civilian and military leaders in Islamabad, including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nawaz+sharif">Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif</a> and army chief Gen Raheel Sharif, that attacks in neighbouring Afghanistan by Pakistan-based militants were "absolutely unacceptable", a senior American official was quoted as saying by the Wall Street Journal. 
 
According to the daily, Rice's remarks were in reference to the recent allegations by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=ashraf+ghani">Afghan president Ashraf Ghani</a> that the series of <keyword id="6406102" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Terror-attacks">terror attacks</keyword> in Kabul were from terrorists based in Pakistan. 
 
Rice, whose visit to Pakistan was not related to latest friction between Islamabad and New Delhi, told Pakistani leaders that "terrorist and militant attacks have developed into a key point of regional friction."

US minces no words, sends a clear cut message to Pakistan on terror

The meeting took place only hours after <a>Pakistan</a>'s all-powerful <a>army</a> chief General <a>Ashfaq Kayani</a> suddenly announced he would retire in November, scotching rumors he was seeking to extend his tenure.
Sharif saw Kayani's departure as a chance to limit the sway of an institution that has ruled <a class="cite">Pakistan</a> for more than half its 66-year history.
He immediately sat down with his top aides to choose a successor, an insider with first-hand knowledge of the event told Reuters.
"We have to say 'no' to the Kayani doctrine," the insider quoted Sharif as saying at the meeting. "(Sharif) and the three others in the room all agreed that it was time to show the world that this was no longer <a class="cite">Kayani's army</a>."
Lieutenant-General <a class="cite">Raheel Sharif</a>, considered a rank outsider in the race for <a class="cite">army</a> chief, is due to take charge of the world's sixth-largest military in a ceremony on Friday.
The decision was announced on Wednesday, and came as a shock to those familiar with the country's politics.
Not only did Sharif choose to bypass Lieutenant-General <a class="cite">Haroon Aslam</a>, the most senior military officer after Kayani and thus his natural heir, but he also ignored Kayani's personal favorite, Lieutenant-General <a class="cite">Rashad Mahmood</a>.
<a class="cite">Raheel Sharif</a>, 57, is known as a laid-back man with a fondness for cigars and an almost complete lack of political ambition.
His father, a retired major, ran one of the country's most exclusive country clubs in <a class="cite">Pakistan</a>'s cultural capital, <a class="cite">Lahore</a>, ensuring a connection with <a class="cite">Nawaz Sharif</a>, who has long been one of the most important members of the city's upper classes.
Most importantly, <a class="cite">Raheel Sharif</a>, who is no relation to the prime minister, has twice served under tribal affairs minister <a class="cite">Abdul Qadir Baloch</a>, a retired general and one of <a class="cite">Nawaz Sharif</a>'s closest confidants.
Baloch was at the <a class="cite">Lahore</a> meeting when <a class="cite">Raheel Sharif</a>'s name was finalized for the top job.
COMPROMISE
Sharif knew, however, that he could not entirely overrule Kayani, the quiet, chain-smoking general, who at one point was voted by <a class="cite">Forbes</a> magazine as the 28th most powerful man in the world.
Kayani had favored Mahmood for the post. So Sharif chose a compromise aimed at placating Kayani loyalists.
He appointed Mahmood chairman of the Joint Chiefs of <a class="cite">Staff Committee</a>, technically the country's highest military office but historically subservient to the <a class="cite">army</a> chief.
<a class="cite">Raheel Sharif</a> will at times have to defer to Mahmood, his nominal boss, given his lack of experience in the intelligence service or the <a class="cite">Military Operations Directorate</a>, two traditionally powerful areas.
The decision to appoint a Kayani loyalist as joint chiefs chairman is a political concession that will make or break Sharif's term as the prime minister of the coup-plagued South Asian nation, retired military officers and analysts said.
It is an attempt to appease the generals while also allowing the balance of power in the country to swing toward the civilian government for the first time in more than a decade, said military affairs expert and author <a class="cite">Ahmed Rashid</a>.
"Politicians here have a tendency to think that lesser known generals are more manageable generals," he said. "Raheel (Sharif) has not been on the radar at all. He doesn't have a public persona in the way that the other front-runners do."
For a prime minister determined to wrest control of strategic and foreign policy from the <a class="cite">army</a>, appointing Mahmood, a man molded in Kayani's image, who would come to the job with his own ideas, would have been less than ideal.
As one retired air marshal said: "Appointing Mahmood would have meant another three years of Kayani's thinking. It was a no-brainer."

The World 's Sixth Largest Military Just Got A New Leader

A top American expert on South Asia termed <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=US-Pakistan+">US-Pakistan bilateral relationship</a> a ‘dysfunctional dynamic’. 
 The <keyword id="3139183" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-expert-Michael-Kugelman">US expert Michael Kugelman</keyword> in his opinion piece in The Diplomat magazine wrote that Pakistan takes US aid in billions and buys military hardware and patronise <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=proxy+groups">proxy groups</a>. 
 
"Even as it pockets billions in US aid and takes in tons of military hardware, Pakistan patronises proxy groups that terrorise Americans, Afghans, and Indians," said Kugelman, senior associate for South and Southeast Asia at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. 
 
Kugelman's comments come as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=raheel+sharif">Pakistan Army chief General Raheel Sharif</a> began his five-day visit here. 
 
Kugelman said Husain Haqqani's book 'Magnificent Delusions' made it clear that US officials have long been content to keep the aid flowing while holding their noses and hoping for the best. 
 
"Such an approach is utterly wrong-headed; US aid does not buy Washington leverage over Pakistan. Additionally, US and Pakistani interests are diametrically divergent on the militancy issue," he wrote. 
 
For the US, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=haqqani+network">Haqqani network</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Lashkar-e-Taiba+">Lashkar-e-Taiba</a> are dangerous groups that must be reined in. 
 
"Another possible reason for Washington's continued courtship of a nation that works against American objectives and interests? Fear. The United States prefers to be on the good side of a volatile nuclear-armed nation than on its bad side," Kugelman said. 
 
According to the expert, General Sharif's meetings will feature plenty of discussion about Afghanistan--and how Pakistan can help bring the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=taliban">Taliban</a> back to the negotiating table. 
 
"The United States will issue fresh calls for Pakistan to end its relationships with militants. And through it all, Gen Sharif will receive the full red carpet treatment--as he did on his last trip to Washington," Kugelman said.

US aid to Pakistan will not buy Washington leverage over Islamabad, says American expert

India, which accounts for 80% of the region's economic output, and Pakistan still do not seem able to find a way to put aside their feud. And the tensions, along with Pakistan's military-centric government, may lead to an increasingly integrated region leaving Pakistan behind. "The United Nations estimates Pakistan's official trade with India in 2013 at a measly $2.5 billion," WSJ reports. "Some economists estimate that it would be closer to $20 billion if not for artificial restrictions.India and Bangladesh are two of the region's countries that have managed to resolve a long standing border dispute in order to pursue fruitful common economic endeavors and pledged to boost their bilateral trade. Indian firms Reliance Power and Adani Power have recently committed an estimated $4.5 billion to build power plants in Bangladesh, <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/Reliance-Power-Adani-in-4-5bn-power-play-in-Bangladesh/articleshow/47570572.cms">according to the Times of India</a>. Reliance Power also signed a deal with Bangladesh Power Development Board for setting up a liquid gas-fired plant and a floating terminal, a total investment of $3 billion.
