The company is also looking to add new services to its businesses. The seven-year-old startup claims to have over 40,000 services professionals listed on its platform for beauty and home segments. Of these about 12,000 are women. The company claims to have been adding 3,000 to 5,000 partners every month as its business has witnessed an uptick during the pandemic. Varun Khaitan, co-founder of Urban Company, told Business Insider that the service professionals onboarding grows linearly with the expansion in business. “If the business grows 2X, you sort of need to have 2X more partners,” he added. Khaitan emphasised that their business is currently two-fold of what it was pre-pandemic (February 2020). The company did see a dip during the second wave of COVID-19 in April-May 2021. “By October [2021] that should go to 3x of pre-COVID. It offers home services and beauty services like hair care and skin care; spa services at home; and home-related services like cleaning, plumbing, carpentry, appliance repair, painting and more. Mukund Kulashekaran, senior vice president of business at Urban Company, added that the Gurugram-based startup is also testing out several new services —- like nail art and advanced treatments like hair removal or laser hair removal — to add to its platform. It is also starting to do appliance repairs over video call, where the professional can guide a customer on how to repair certain electronics and appliances over video calls. He added that the men’s grooming segment, which was launched right before India announced nationwide lockdown in March 2020, has seen 150,000 transactions to date. Meanwhile, its spa business is at 200,000 deliveries. Meanwhile, it’s salon-for-women business has grown at the same pace, Kulashekaran noted. Will Urban Company be able to sustain this growth post-pandemic? While Urban Company may have witnessed an uptick in their demand and supply since 2020, the question remains whether it would be able to sustain it once things go back to normal and customers get more comfortable with going out. Devendra Agrawal, founder of investment bank Dexter Capital, told Business Insider that COVID-19 has caused permanent changes in habits in several segments. While most people would have preferred salons earlier, the convenience and pricing offered by Urban Company has the potential to cause that change in habit. “Similarly on the supply side, earlier for stylists there won't be any option but to work in a salon on a meagre salary, but such stylists are getting their income multiplied with help of Urban Company. Whenever technology and operations come together to give great customer experience, it creates a wonderful moat. We have seen this in the case of Amazon and in <keyword id="11888858" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="india-urban-company">India Urban Company</keyword> has created that wonderful moat so the uptick is likely to stay post-pandemic as well,” he added. Urban Company competes with Amazon-backed HouseJoy in the home category. Quikr’s ‘AtHomeDiva’ was a competitor for Urban Company in the at-home beauty services segment, but the company <a href="https://inc42.com/buzz/quikr-clears-the-air-around-layoffs-athomediva-shutdown/">shut down in 2019</a>. Agrawal believes that any large or lucrative sector is always under threat of being penetrated by larger players. That’s what has happened in the e-commerce and groceries segments with the entry of Reliance and Tata. “However, the segment Urban Clap caters to, may not be easy to crack for a large player organically, which means the only option is inorganically. Unfortunately, there are not too many high quality players of scale, which are in this segment so it may actually mean that Urban Company actually becomes one large player in this segment,” he added. <ul><li>Several investors believe that <keyword id="8681398" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="urban-company" source="Orion">Urban Company</keyword> has managed to build a moat around its business, which has given a competitive advantage to the company.</li><li>The experts believe that the entry of other big players in the on-demand service can only be fueled by the entry of deep-pocketed players like Reliance or Amazon.</li><li>Interestingly, Amazon already entered this segment six years ago with its investment in home repair service Housejoy.</li></ul>Whether it’s Ola-Uber in the cab-hailing world or Zomato-Swiggy in the food delivery arena, the existence of competition is something taken for granted, especially when you’re running a so-called lucrative business. Then, there is Urban Company that has been enjoying its high status and multi-billion dollar valuation without having to worry about any competitor who may threaten to take away customers or the power to price the product at will. The on-demand home and beauty service startup — valued at a whopping<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/news/urban-company-raises-255-million-at-over-2-billion-valuation-eyes-global-expansion/articleshow/83167168.cms"> $2.1 billion</a> in June 2021 — has spent the last seven years expanding to<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/urban-company-on-lookout-for-15000-service-professionals-in-50-cities-in-india/articleshow/85447261.cms"> five international markets</a>. Yet the company still has not found a rival of the same size or scale in its home market — India, which is also the largest source of its revenue. This does raise a lot of questions such as if the sector is not lucrative enough or whether Urban Company has found a holy grail into people’s pockets that others find hard to crack. Business Insider spoke to several analysts, industry experts and investors, all had one thing to point out — Urban Company has found its moat. A moat, which you must have heard about in history books or fairy tales, is the preliminary source of defence to protect what one has built. In business parlance, it means competitive advantage over other players. More than 1,000 startups <a href="https://www.techinasia.com/insights-from-25-failed-startups-in-india-2016">shut down</a> in India that year as investors tightened their pockets. He also emphasised that Urban Company has focused on providing standardised services, “which is very difficult to replicate when you are dealing with such a large network of people.” This has led to a very customer-centric business, with good repeat order. The ability to survive 2016 amidst tough competition and lack of funding to eventually becoming a category leader with big fundraises has acted like a moat for the company, Bansal told Business Insider. These points have allowed the company to raise close to $440 million to date from marquee investors like Tiger Global, Dragoneer Investment Group and Prosus Ventures in the not-so-distant past. “They are bringing a certain amount of quality and customer service at the centre of what they are doing. Maybe that’s what allowed them to differentiate themselves and after a certain scale VCs [venture capitalists] look at these things as a one horse kind of a game,” Kabir Kochhar, partner at Anthill, told Business Insider. Does this mean the company will be the single big player in its play? The experts are still split over how the market would look and who are going to be the next big players competing against Urban Company. Based on the inputs from industry experts, there are four possible outcomes here: <div type="image" title="Uber has Ola, Zomato has Swiggy but who’s Urban Company competing with?" msid="85857636" hostid="261"></div> Out of the above mentioned scenarios, two and three are the most likely to happen. Many may not know this, but Amazon already made an entry in this segment six years ago with its investment in Housejoy, which specifically focused on home services like house repairs, cleaning, fumigation and more. Housejoy has also been trying to revamp its offering since February 2021. It expanded to on-demand beauty services in some of its cities including Bengaluru in association with salon chain Naturals. The Bengaluru-based startup, founded around the same time as Urban Company, has raised about $30 million to date and raised its last round in 2018. Again, the key to Urban Company lies in the investors’ willingness to fuel its competitor “[If] Somebody like Reliance and Amazon decides that they want to get into it and invest a very huge amount of capital to build on to it, then they can because the market is extremely large. It’s not like Urban Company has captured the market, it’ll be a very small percentage. Inorganic medium — investments, mergers and acquisitions (M&amp;A), etc — is the only way to make a segway in this play. “Unfortunately, there are not too many high quality players of scale, which are in this segment so it may actually mean that Urban Company becomes one large player in this segment,” he noted. Meanwhile, Kochhar of Anthill Ventures told Business Insider, “I don’t think that Urban Company will be a market leader in all these different kinds of services. I can see the verticalisation happening better also. Maybe there is someone who does better home services or sub sections like plumbing, house repair.” Regardless, the players in the segment are hopeful about setting up their marker here. “We are confident that with time ahead, this [on-demand home and beauty service] will become a huge industry because everyone wants comfort and convenience,” said Mayank Arya, co-founder of Yes Madam, another startup working in the segment. Uber has Ola, Zomato has Swiggy but who’s Urban Company competing with?

<ul><li>Gurugram-based home services startup <keyword id="2811049" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="UrbanClap">Urbanclap</keyword> plans to launch in 4 Indian cities in the next quarter. </li><li>The startup recently announced its plan to expand to Abu Dhabi.</li><li>Two new services – men’s grooming and on-demand maid for cleaning – which are currently live in Delhi will soon be launched across India. </li></ul>Urbanclap was a small startup based out of Gurugram in 2014, offering home services digitally. Today, it has operations across 10 cities in India, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It recently announced its Abu Dhabi expansion, and plans to grow its UAE business twice over, on a monthly basis. What’s more, the company has plans to become a ₹100 billion company! In an interview with Business Insider, <keyword id="3012564" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Varun-Khaitan">Varun Khaitan</keyword>, co-founder, Urbanclap said that there are many plans in store for their India business as well. Urbanclap will soon launch in four more cities by the next quarter. Two new services – men’s grooming and on-demand maid for cleaning – which are currently live in Delhi will be launched across India. “Our investments are on constantly improving the business,” said Khaitan. Profitability vs Scale UrbanClap recently raised ₹16 million from Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy, according to paper.vc, a business intelligence firm. It has marquee investors like Ratan Tata, SAIF Partners, Accel Partners and Bessemer Venture Partners on board, and raised a total funding of $110 million. The startup has about 6 lakh users per month with 20,000 service professionals on-board. But the main question is – how far is profitability? “If we want to, we can turn profitable in the next three months. Instead, we want to invest in our future and build our scale to one day make Urbanclap a ₹100 billion company,” said Khaitan. Recently, Urbanclap <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/urbanclap-revenue-up-309-losses-down-25-in-fy18/articleshow/64008938.cms?from=mdr">reported </a>a 309% jump in its operational revenue to ₹450 million for 2017-18. The losses however were at ₹750 million. “In the last three years, our jump in revenue has been significant while the losses in quantum have remained flat. The amount of burn remaining flat with revenue increases, is a sign of scale. If you want to keep growing, you will have to be investing for tomorrow’s growth,” said Khaitan. An offer they couldn’t refuse All the founders Abhiraj Bahl, Raghav Chandra and Khaitan, came back from the US hoping to build a business. They had the common goal of solving a problem for the masses. After extensive research, the idea of helping people run their homes appealed to them. They also realized that professionals like electricians and beauticians too barely make any money due to middlemen or employers. “We realised very early on that the problem that we were solving was not just building a marketplace and connecting users. We ended up removing the middlemen and transitioning these employees or service professionals into microentrepreneurs,” said Khaitan. Service professionals like electricians, beauticians and carpenters had nothing to complain as Urbanclap made them an offer they couldn’t refuse. “We told them you keep 80% of the earnings, Urbanclap will keep 20%. Overnight their earnings went up. Today, every other service professional through Urbanclap earns makes an average of ₹40,000 per month. Hundreds of our beauticians make more than ₹1 lakh a month,” said Khaitan. Making a difference to professionals also improved service quality to consumers. When they started, the founders were hoping to have at least 100 users per day, by the end of 2015. However, they had 1000 per day. Apple’s Tim Cook meets startup founders and chit-chat over iOs mobile apps

One of the biggest construction companies in the world, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=China+Railway+Construction+Corporation&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">China Railway Construction Corporation</a>, is keen on investing whopping Rs 35,000-40,000 crore in India’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=road+and+highways&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">roads and highway sector</a>. 
 
Talks were held between top executives of the Chinese major and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=National+Highways+Authority+of+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">National Highways Authority of India</a> (NHAI) Chairman Raghav Chandra. 
"They are keen on bidding for around 3,000-km highway contracts. They will be participating in hybrid annuity, build-operate-transfer (BOT) and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) models," Chandra told ET. 
 
If the bidding sees light of the day, it would be the single largest foreign investment in India’s roads sector and would help ndia's road transport and highways ministry achieve the target of 40 km per day, or 15,000 km for the current financial year. 
 
The corporation could then also bid for several expressway projects that are considered to be high traction in terms of return on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=investment&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">investment</a>. 
The Chinese corporation builds 60 per cent of highways and 80 per cent of railway tracks in China. 
 
Recently, many foreign companies and investors have shown keen interest in investing in road projects. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=nitin+gadkari&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari</a> also attracted investors from US to invest in India. 
 
Investor interest in the sector had weakened drastically after 2010 due to difficulties related to land acquisition and getting various approvals, besides public opposition to toll collection. Projects worth less than Rs 10,000 crore were awarded in FY15.

“The Prime Minister’s announcement of the Startup Policy had quite a few important and measurable benefits that the startups can gain from. Most importantly, the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister outlined a change in the principle approach of the government towards the economy – that the government wants to stay away from deciding and directing on what needs to be done. Instead, the Government looks at a policy of arm’s length enablement. This stand is a bold new change in the government policy and disruptive in its own right. 
 
Venture debt was miserably missing in the ecosystem. Startups have only been used to equity as a mode of capital. GREX is completely poised to launch venture debt in a few weeks’ time. This will help our partner Banks and NBFCs walk the road along with us more aggressively as credits become guaranteed.

	Start-Up India is going to go a long way in filling up this void. Its appreciable that the major concern of B2B business which is 10% TDS and 14.5 % ST, have been noticed and government saying they will rationalize the same. <o:p></o:p>

	Also as rightly said by Anisha Singh, it’s important that women entrepreneurs should be looked upon as entrepreneurs, not just women entrepreneurs. It’s our work that should get noticed not our gender. However the change is need of time and to give this equality government has to encourage women entrepreneur. It’s good to see that certain provisions are made where there are funds allocations for women entrepreneur. Ecosystem is getting changed and allowing more women to work, which is a highlight of Start-Up India Initiative. Apart from this startup sector becoming unregulated will be better for the sector. Instead of looking at Singapore, we will now have our ecosystem in India. Hoping the budget session will further revolutionize the startups in India. Now the only concern will be 'Sell it India" that is a challenge that needs to be addressed next.<o:p></o:p>
