But no one will make it, she said.</p><p>Hunt revealed this to Andy Cohen on "Watch What Happens Live" on Thursday (<a href="https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/helen-hunt-says-her-idea-for-a-twister-sequel-featuring-all-black-and-brown-storm-chasers-was-rejected-063545907.html">via Yahoo</a>).</p><p>And she had an impressive team behind her: the writers and stars behind 2018's acclaimed "Blindspotting," Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal.</p><p>"I tried to get it made," Hunt told Cohen. "With Daveed, and Rafael and me writing it, and all Black and Brown storm chasers, and they wouldn't do it. I was going to direct it."</p><p>The Oscar-winning actress starred in the 1996 hit opposite the late Bill Paxton as two storm chasers on the brink of a divorce. </p><p>"We could barely get a meeting," <a href="https://www.bravotv.com/watch-what-happens-live-with-andy-cohen/season-18/episode-99/videos/after-show-did-helen-hunt">Hunt told Cohen</a> about a sequel, which fans have been wanting for decades.</p><p>"And this is in June of 2020 when it was all about diversity. And it would have been so cool," she continued. "There was a HBCU [historically Black college and university] where we wanted it to take place, and a rocket science club, and in this one they shoot the rockets into the tornado. It was going to be so cool."</p><div type="image" title="Blindspotting Summit Entertainment Ariel Nava final" height="675" width="900" msid="83443902" hostid="261"></div>For 1996's "Twister" both Warner Bros. and Universal backed the movie financially, with WB taking the domestic release and the latter handing international, so it's unclear to whom Hunt actually pitched her idea.<p>Insider contacted Warner Bros. and Universal for comment on Hunt's claims but didn't immediately get a response from either.</p><div type="image" title="Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton staring." height="729" width="973" msid="83443903" hostid="261"></div>However, last June <a href="https://variety.com/2020/film/news/twister-reboot-joseph-kosinski-universal-1234648589/">Variety</a> reported that Universal is developing a reboot of "Twister" with "Top Gun: Maverick" director Joseph Kosinski attached to direct.<p>"Twister," directed by Jon de Bont, earned over $494 million at the worldwide box office (on a <a href="https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt0117998/?ref_=bo_se_r_1">$92 million budget</a>) thanks to its dazzling CGI effects of its stars racing through vicious tornado storms.</p><p>Along with Hunt and Paxton, the movie also starred Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cary Elwes, Alan Ruck, Jamie Gertz, and Anthony Rapp.</p><p>Hunt is starring in the <keyword id="6355065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="TV">TV</keyword> adaptation of "Blindspotting" (airing on Starz beginning June 13), which is written and executive produced by Diggs and Casal.</p>

Ethan directed "Wildcat," a drama about American novelist Flannery O'Connor, and penned its script with Shelby Gaines. The original idea for the film, per Variety, came from the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.insider.com/stranger-things-every-star-first-debut-acting-roles-2022-8">"Stranger Things" star</a> herself.</p><p>In addition to starring as O'Connor, Maya also plays six different characters from the author's short stories that are depicted in the film. It's those roles that required her to perform in some intimate scenes – which were, of course, overseen by her father.</p><p>"We were so comfortable with it," Ethan told Variety of the sequences. "I couldn't care less."</p><p>Those intimate scenes, according to Variety, also starred Rafael Casal and Cooper Hoffman. Ethan said that he thought that it may have been "weird" for Maya's scene partners, and that they wanted to take care of both of them as well.</p><p>"We made sure to have an intimacy coordinator on set for them," Maya said. "So that they felt safe and comfortable and not like they were being spied on…"</p><p>"…By some creepy dad," Ethan said.</p>

Around the same time Hunt said she, Diggs, and Casal were pitching their sequel idea, <a href="https://variety.com/2020/film/news/twister-reboot-joseph-kosinski-universal-1234648589/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Variety reported</a> that "Top Gun: Maverick" director Joseph Kosinski was attached to direct a sequel.</p><p>In 2022, it was reported that "Minari" director <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/lee-isaac-chung-to-direct-twister-sequel-1235282780/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lee Isaac Chung would direct the sequel</a>, which is set for release in the summer of 2024 and is being produced by Frank Marshall ("Indiana Jones" and "Jurassic Park" franchises).</p><p>The <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/10/twisters-sequel-forecast-spring-start-universal-amblin-finalize-director-1235147353/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sequel is to focus</a> on the daughter of the characters played by Hunt and Paxton, who takes on their love for storm chasing.</p><p>"Blindspotting" season two, which Diggs cowrites and executive produces, premieres on Friday on Starz. He will next be seen in the live-action remake of "The Little Mermaid," playing Sebastian. It opens in theaters on May 26.</p>

<p class="drop-cap">Whether you discovered him on stage delivering a Tony-winning performance in the dual roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in "Hamilton," or on the big screen as a Bay Area parolee trying to turn his life around in "Blindspotting," or by listening to his band clipping, there's one thing that's clear about Daveed Diggs: he's got passion.</p><p>Diggs harnesses that passion beautifully in the second season of his acclaimed Starz series, "Blindspotting" (premiering on Friday).</p><p>Based on the hit 2018 indie movie of the same name that he and lifelong friend Rafael Casal starred in and co-wrote, "Blindspotting" uses comedy, drama, rap, and dance to spotlight issues of race, class, and police violence in Oakland, California. </p><p>While Diggs and Casal starred as Collin and Miles in the original film, the series focuses squarely on the relationship between Miles and his fiancé Ashley (Jasmine Cephas Jones) and his mother Rainey (Helen Hunt). (Diggs and Casal are executive producers on the show and have written numerous episodes).</p><p>In season two, we watch Ashley — now married to Miles — cope with raising her child with Miles while he's in San Quentin prison on drug possession charges. "Verse" (what Diggs calls the raps in the episodes) and "movement" (dancing) are prominently featured, making the show one of the most unique currently on TV.</p><p>Insider had a chance to chat with Diggs recently about the evolution of "Blindspotting," that <a href="https://www.insider.com/helen-hunt-wants-to-direct-twister-sequel-black-storm-chasers-2021-6">"Twister" sequel he tried to make with Hunt</a>, and why he's not talking about what it was like to play Sebastian in the live-action version of "The Little Mermaid" — yet.</p><div type="image" title="Blindspotting" height="900" width="1600" msid="99475070" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>Writing-wise, what was the biggest challenge in creating "Blindspotting's" second season?</strong></p><p>I think we sort of landed in a good place by the end of season one of how to integrate the verse stuff and the movement stuff. It was an experiment that we wanted to try on TV. Obviously, we did a lot of verse stuff in the film, but doing it in a short-form way, we were experimenting with it, and what we landed on ended up being really impactful.</p><p>The mandate for season two was to be funnier — twice as many jokes — but also have the movement pieces being really at points where the words are not going to be good enough. So that was a big thing in the writer's room: if we can't say it in the time allotted then that's okay, because we can do it this way. </p><p><strong>Very much like key moments in the movie. </strong></p><p>Yeah. That's how verse worked in the movie: a character plea to the audience for understanding. And when verse doesn't work, we have movement in which we don't have the language for this. </p><p><strong>A highlight of using verse in this season is watching Helen Hunt do it. Did you have to talk her into doing it?</strong></p><p>No, she asked. She was like, "Is Rainey ever going to get a verse?" And we were like, "Yes! We didn't know that was a thing you wanted to do." So that was another cool challenge in the room to be like what does that sound like? What are her speech patterns like? When's the moment for that, when words fail her? So putting in that episode where she's worn down by he son being incarcerated and speaking out to the audience felt like a great place for heightened language. </p><p><strong>Is there a storyline in season two that happily surprised you?</strong></p><p>I am really happy with how much Jacque (April Absynth) and Cuddie (Lance Cameron Holloway) were able to make their way into the season. I love those characters. And it's tough, there are a lot of characters in this show, so to have a storyline that's an offshoot that there's still enough of it in there to feel there's been a journey, I was very proud of that.</p><p>And I think more of Trish (Jaylen Barron). We found out last season how funny she is, so just letting her go this season was one of the greatest choices we made. Jaylen takes Trish in a lot of interesting places. In fact, she and Ashley get to a good place by the middle of the season, which is kind of nice — the two young female leads of the show at each other's throats for a long time — it's cool watching them squash their beef and become advocates. </p><div type="image" title="actors from Blindspotting in nuns costumes" height="544" width="1024" msid="99475072" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>In the second episode, we get a fun surprise cameo: Oakland rap legend Too Short. How did you get him on the show?</strong></p><p>Man, we asked. [<em>Laughs</em>.]</p><p><strong>Okay, let me ask it this way: do you start writing with him in the story, and finally it gets to a point that if he doesn't say yes, you all have to scramble to rewrite it?</strong></p><p>Yeah, we hung that episode on getting Too Short, and we were like, "This better work." We started coming up with plan Bs but none of them were very good so it was great that he was game to do that. It says a lot about him that a legend like that would be able to do this thing that — I hope he sees it this way — is both honoring his contribution but also laughing at himself a little. </p><p><strong>Did he have any notes?</strong></p><p>He did. His biggest was that the Too Short persona is always being a player, so go ahead and make fun of that. It was such a good note. </p><p><strong>Rafael directs numerous episodes this season. Would you want to direct any episodes if there's a season 3?</strong></p><p>I don't know. I think about this a lot. I don't think of myself as a director but I think if I ever were, it would be season 3 of this show. It's the most protected environment I could possibly do it in because I know the story really well, I know the characters really well, and I'm still surrounded by Rafael, and producers Keith and Jess Wu Calder, who have been rocking this with me for 17 years now. This is the only place where if I directed it I know it wouldn't come out bad. But I don't know. It's not a thing I have a huge itch for. But that could change. </p><p><strong>Your Collin character has not shown up on the show to this point. Has there been an interest at all to show up?</strong></p><p>Oh, I still don't think we need him. I think the show has plenty of interesting characters. I'm not going to get into it mostly because I'm probably going to misremember things. But all I'll say is there was an opportunity where we were talking about that, and it didn't happen, and the reasons that it didn't happen are potentially shady. But shady in the way that we know the industry is shady.  </p><p><strong>Okay, we'll leave it at that. Can we talk about you playing Sebastian in "The Little Mermaid"?</strong></p><p>We can't. Because I don't have the talking points and Disney is litigious. So I'm not going to do it, I'm not going to play myself like that. [<em>Laughs</em>.] </p><p><strong>Then let's end with this. For you and Rafael, has there ever been a moment where you two have been able to fully take in and appreciate how much you've built? This all came from an idea that you guys had back in the early 2000s to make something about life in Oakland?  </strong></p><p>Man. [<em>Long pause</em>.] We don't really talk about it that often, but every once in a while, we'll just look at each other and start laughing. I mean, it's all ludicrous. It's not how stuff is supposed to happen. But I'm super grateful for it.</p><p>Season two tells a pretty closed story, which is the same thing we did with season one, and the reason for that is because we don't know if we're going to be able to get to do another season. After kissing Loki, Sylvie sent him away to the Time Variance Authority HQ — though it appears to be one from another timeline, where the versions of Agent Mobius (<a href="https://www.insider.com/category/owen-wilson">Owen Wilson</a>) and Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku) don't know who he is.</p><p>With no one standing in her way, Sylvie killed He Who Remains and unleashed the multiverse. </p><p>"I don't think he will stop searching [for Sylvie] now," Hiddleston told <a href="https://www.empireonline.com/movies/news/empire-magazine-buy-subscribe-today/">Empire Magazine</a>, according to <a href="https://screenrant.com/loki-season-2-sylvie-future-story-tom-hiddleston/">Screen Rant</a>. Additionally, voice actress Tara Strong told <a href="https://www.thepopverse.com/miss-minutes-will-be-back-for-loki-season-2-confirms-tara-strong">Popverse</a> that she'll return as Miss Minutes. "I think that's really clear. Loki's almost more unstable, and as turbulent and passionate and chaotic as he's ever been. And maybe some of that needs resolution. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>"Blindspotting" is one of the most unique movies you'll see this year.</strong></li><li><strong>It's mixture of comedy, drama, and rap, and a powerful look at current life for many today in America while also being a love letter to Oakland.</strong></li></ul><p><br>It was one of the movies that premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival that I couldn't stop thinking about.&#xa0;</br></p><p>Director Carlos López Estrada's striking look at two friends in Oakland who are just trying to get through life despite obstacles like police brutality and gentrification, "Blindspotting" is one of the most unique movies of the year.&#xa0;</p><p>Daveed Diggs (who originated the roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in the musical "Hamilton") and Rafael Casal, star as lifelong friends Collin (Diggs) and Miles (Casal). Collin is counting down the days until he's through with probation but Miles isn't going to make things easy as his volatile ways could throw Collin right back into the system. And things get even more complicated when Collin witnesses a white police officer (Ethan Embry) gun down a black man in the back.</p><p>Using comedy, drama, loads of Oakland references, and the rapping skills of both Diggs and Casal, "Blindspotting" is part love letter to the Town (which is having a major cinematic moment with "Black Panther" and "Sorry to Bother You") and part examination of America in 2018.</p><p>The lifeblood of the movie is the connection between Diggs and Casal, who both penned the screenplay. Real-life friends who have now hit it big with a feature film, the two show incredible range in their performances which hits its zenith at the end of the movie when the undercurrent of race finally explodes into rage.</p><p>Then there are the freestyle raps. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Sundance Institute</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>"Blindspotting" is a powerful look at a race and class.</strong></li><li><strong>It stands out because of its well done use of comedy, drama, and rap.</strong></li></ul><p>The Sundance Film Festival is where movies that challenge the audience get their fair shake, and "Blindspotting," the debut feature of director Carlos López Estrada, is exactly that.</p><p>The movie is a racially-charged powder keg that uses comedy, drama, and rap to give the audience a journey through the complicated lives of two friends living in West Oakland.</p><p>Colin (Daveed Diggs, who cowrote the screenplay with Estrada) is days away from completing his probation and is trying to stay on the straight-and-narrow. However, his lifelong friend Miles (Rafael Casal) is not the best influence on him as he walks around carrying a gun and always seems to get Colin involved in things that he doesn't want to do.</p><p>The movie's foundation is built on contrasts. Colin is black and Miles is white. West Oakland has a fan base of rowdy Oakland Raiders fans and stylish Golden State Warrior fans. The city is growing more and more gentrified. Even on the marquee of the local theater it has a unique lineup coming soon: rapper Too Short and rock band Third Eye Blind.</p><p>And it's through these differences that Estrada lays down the struggle Colin is going through in his life. He isn't just shackled by the label of "convicted felon," but also the fear of the police - after he witnesses a police officer shooting an unarmed black man running from him. Then there's his on-again-off-again girlfriend Val (Janina Gavankar), who he's trying to show he's changed since getting out of prison but can still see she can't let go why he was put there. The only comfort is with his best friend Miles, who sports a gold grill and tattoos.</p><p>A lot of the movie is a fun buddy comedy with the two dealing with entertaining situations, like an Uber driver with lots of guns, trying to sell hot-irons at a beauty salon, as they navigate through Oakland.</p><p>But there's an unspoken uneasiness about them as well, especially since Colin has gotten out of prison, that finally comes to ahead by the end of the movie. Whenever you think you've figured out this movie, something happens that pulls the rug right from you.</p><p>The strengths of "Blindspotting" is its commentary on race and class through the use of comedy and use of rapping in two powerful scenes. Where it falls short at times is when it becomes too dramatic. When the message is lost through raw anger.</p><p>But perhaps that was Estrada's intention all along.
