Around 40 per cent of Indians surveyed have been defrauded when shopping online during the festive season, finds a study. The study was conducted by The Harris Poll on behalf of <keyword id="179697" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="norton" source="Orion">Norton</keyword>, a global leader in Cyber safety, which released the Indian findings that explored attitudes toward cyber security and online shopping during the festive season. According to the findings, two-thirds of Indian adults surveyed were concerned about their personal details being compromised (78 per cent), being defrauded by a third-party retailer (77 per cent), buying or receiving a refurbished device as a gift (72 per cent), and a device they receive as a gift being hacked (69 per cent). "Recently, there has been an increase in the number of online shoppers, and with that the rise in online shopping scams, gift card frauds, postal delivery frauds," said <keyword id="2022067" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ritesh-chopra" source="Orion">Ritesh Chopra</keyword>, Norton Director India and <keyword id="497507" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="saarc-countries" source="Orion">SAARC Countries</keyword> at NortonLifeLock. About 78 per cent of Indian adults surveyed agree that spending time online via their connected devices helps them feel more connected during the festive season, and 74 per cent say that it helps their mental well-being. Sixty-five per cent of Indian adults say their mental well-being would suffer if they could not access their connected devices during the festive season, the report mentioned. "Our Norton report also suggests that many Indian adults have been defrauded while doing online shopping, the average loss of those surveyed is Rs 6,216," he added. Rae Bareli (UP), Apr 21 () The number of coronavirus cases in this district jumped from two to 35 with several people testing positive after coming in contact with participants at a Tablighi Jamaat congregation, officials said on Tuesday.Till Monday, the district had only two coronavirus patients, both had attended the religious congregation in Delhi last month. The area where they lived was turned into a containment zone and people in their neighbourhood were quarantined, the officials said.According to Chief Development Officer Abhishek Goyal, the district reported 33 fresh cases in the last 24 hours.All the patients are admitted to Kripalu Institute in Munshiganj, he added. <keyword id="43068" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Rae-Bareli">RAE BARELI</keyword>: Priyanka Vadra on Sunday once again eclipsed brother <keyword id="5268" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rahul-Gandhi">Rahul Gandhi</keyword> in leading the <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> charge against BJP and <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>, saying the opposition party was scrambling like "panic-stricken rats". She also told the BJP's PM nominee that one did not need a 56-inch chest to run the country but a big heart and compassion. 
 
Sporadic interventions by other leaders notwithstanding, Priyanka has been leading the line ever since she started campaigning in the family boroughs of Amethi and Rae Bareli, repeatedly taking on the BJP. In the last leg of the poll campaign, the war-of-words has turned into a Priyanka versus Modi affair as her speeches are aimed at launching a counter-offensive against BJP's PM candidate. 
 
Priyanka has been playing a force multiplier for Rahul and Sonia but the attention she is getting from TV channels is another indication that she can put her brother and even her mother in the shade. 
 
At a time she was supposed to limit herself only to family constituencies, Priyanka's terse comments targeting Modi is resonating across the country and there is a feeling that the impact would have been much more if she was set free. 
 
However, Congress leaders are adamant that restricting herself to Amethi and Rae Bareli was Priyanka's decision. 
 
Taking a dig at Modi, she said, "It takes a big heart and compassion, not a 56-inch chest, to run India. It doesn't take brute force to run this country, it takes internal and moral strength, even a determination to lay one's life for the unity of the country." 
 Reacting to Priyanka's remarks, <keyword id="180781" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="BJP-spokesperson">BJP spokesperson</keyword> Prakash Javadekar said, "Calling BJP rats is abusive politics. They have taken democratic discourse to such a low and they have now distorted democracy and hurt democracy." 
 
Another BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said Priyanka was Congress's only hope but they had wasted her by wheeling her out at a time when they were destined to lose. 
 
At a rally in Gorakhpur, Modi had said it took a 56-inch chest – like his – to convert UP into Gujarat. The swipe, largely aimed at Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, was picked up by Priyanka on Sunday and used to Congress's advantage. Referring to the use of brute force, Priyanka also made a quiet, but arched reference to the 2002 Godhra riots. 
 
Priyanka called India a country of Mahatma Gandhi, where tribals and dalits had also laid their lives for the nation's unity. She said it was this culture of unity that she had inherited. "This is the blood that flows through my veins," she said. Repeatedly telling people, as she has over her campaign trails, to protect and preserve the culture of unity in India, Priyanka warned people of the divisive forces at work, out to spread hate and divide people on the lines of caste, religion and community. 
 
She said, "Vote for development, but also think about strengthening this country. Don't limit your vision, think of your sisters, the youth. What kind of country do you want? This is a country that believes in mutual coexistence, it needs a government that will keep them together." 
 
Building the momentum of the electoral campaign ahead of April 30 polls in Sonia's constituency, Priyanka urged people to vote for the Congress. Telling people about the drastic improvements that Sonia had brought to Rae Bareli, Priyanka said, "People have the power to lead political parties on the right path. Rahul and Sonia's politics is about empowering your hands. Everyone in my family, from Jawaharlal Nehru downwards, knew we are nothing without the support of the people. You make us. You matter. Nothing else is of any consequence."

BJP Scrambling Like Panic-Stricken Rats: Priyanka Gandhi

NEW DELHI: Imagine a Narendra <keyword id="2196111" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Modi-vs-Priyanka-Gandhi">Modi vs Priyanka Gandhi</keyword> contest for the Varanasi <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> seat. It would have been the mother of all election battles, and would have put everything and everyone else in the shade. It would have electrified the nation and riveted the attention of the world. 
 Priyanka Gandhi is reliably learned to have been very keen to be the <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> candidate in the holy city. But the party leadership finally decided against fielding her. 
 Priyanka, who has so far limited her political responsibilities to managing her brother and mother's Lok Sabha campaigns in <keyword id="43068" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rae-Bareli">Rae Bareli</keyword> and Amethi, is believed to have made a strong pitch to contest because she felt Modi was “bad for the country” and needed to be “stopped”. 
 
Apart from perhaps tying up Modi in Varanasi and forcing him to curtail his national campaign, Priyanka's entry would have charged up the rank and file of the Congress at a time when a number of ministers and leaders were reluctant to fight elections of fear of losing (one senior Cabinet member is reported to have feared a rout). The fact that she was willing to place 'a higher principle' above a real risk of defeat would have sent out a strong and defiant message to the demoralized troops, and hopefully, the entire electorate, Congress insiders said. 
 
“Even if she’d lost, the results would have been only known after the elections. But it would have come as a huge booster before. It was very courageous of her. That’s something senior Congressmen who’ve run away from contesting didn’t understand,” said a party manager. 
 
 
 
 
Senior partymen said the decision to not field Priyanka was driven by the logic of preferring a ‘local’ to take on Modi the ‘outsider’. But there may have been other reasons too: 
 
* The estimate that Priyanka's presence in Varanasi would have accorded Modi “too much importance”; 
 
* The fear that defeat of one of the three Gandhis might have dimmed the ‘halo’ around them; 
 
* It would almost certainly have exposed Priyanka to attacks from Modi and the BJP on account of her husband Robert Vadra's alleged ties with real estate giant DLF and brought some of his other reported land deals under the microscope; 
 
* Most of all, it would have diverted attention from Rahul and his campaign, and raised questions as to whether Priyanka's entry was an implicit acknowledgement of her brother's lacklustre leadership. There might have been some apprehension that Priyanka, by the force of her personality, would have greater gravitational pull than Rahul. She has been variously described by those who know her as “charming, charismatic and connected”; her political instincts are also said to be sharp, and she can work a crowd. The 41-year-old Priyanka’s entry could have undermined Rahul’s authority not long after he'd been officially anointed future leader. 
 
For Priyanka, who is said to be very close to her one-year-older brother, the reason for wanting to contest in Varanasi was never to position herself as an alternative to Rahul, but to “fight the good fight”, according to an insider. “She has no larger ambition to lead the Congress,” he added. 
 
Still, her desire to take the field against Modi is significant because it’s in stark contrast to the continuing perception of Rahul being a reluctant politician, and because it shows that the younger sibling may not be averse to broadening her political interests behind the family boroughs of Rae Bareli and Amethi. For a long time now, there has been a subterranean demand, ‘Priyanka lao, Congress bachao’, which periodically finds public voice. 
 
One of the reasons the Congress delayed naming a candidate for Varanasi was because it was weighing the possibility of naming Priyanka. But the actual decision against fielding her was taken some days before Tuesday’s announcement of local MLA Ajay Rai as candidate for the Congress; the last few days were spent seeking a tacit understanding with SP and BSP for complicating Modi's job in Varanasi. 
 
Significantly, early this month, in perhaps the strongest push yet for bringing Priyanka to the forefront of the Congress, party general secretary Janardan Dwivedi said that Rajiv Gandhi spoke to him about his daughter’s political aptitude way back in 1990. The question is: Was Dwivedi aware of the secret confabulations and was he trying to test the waters? 
 
While promising to reveal details in due course, Dwivedi said, “As far as I know, her (Priyanka) interest in politics started at an early age. She was keen to understand political developments and the language of politics from the very start. I even have proof of this but I don’t want to discuss it now. All I’ll say is that Rajiv Gandhi told me something about this in 1990. That’s all for the moment.” 
 
The comment immediately led a group of Congress leaders to claim, off the record, that there were plans afoot to bring Priyanka into active politics. 
 
That plan has been shelved, at least for the moment. As for Rai’s chances in Varanasi, even the boldest gambler is likely to think twice before placing a bet on him. 
 
But Priyanka is clearly still interested in Varanasi, even if she’s not in the fight herself. At a meeting at the Tughlaq Lane residence of Rahul last Monday, Priyanka gave Rai a pep talk soon after the party decided to field him. 
 
“Priyankaji ne kaha ki aap jam kar ladiye. Unhone apna personal mobile number bhi diya aur kaha ki aapko jo bhi zaroorat hogi woh aap turant bolen. Woh aapko muhaiyya karayi jaayegi. (Priyankaji told me to fight wholeheartedly. She gave me her personal mobile number and told me not to hesitate to ask for anything that I may need and said I will be given every help),” Rai quoted her as telling him.

The renewed speculation could unsettle the Congress since any talk of Priyanka's coming into politics undercuts Rahul's fledgling leadership. Dwivedi is seen to be representing a significant group in the top and middle rungs of the party management who would prefer 42-year-old Priyanka as political legatee of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty in place of her one-year-older brother. 
 His remarks are being seen in certain sections of the party as a vote of low-confidence in <keyword id="5268" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rahul-Gandhi">Rahul Gandhi</keyword>, who is leading the Congress charge in a difficult national election. Rahul was elevated to the No 2 position in Congress last year but is still far from succeeding his mother <keyword id="689" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi">Sonia Gandhi</keyword> at the top. In the past few weeks, the much-discussed transformation of Congress in Rahul's image — the emergence of a Congress (R), as it were — appears to be have been put on hold as the party's primary focus has shifted to avoiding its lowest-ever tally (114 seats in 1999). 
 
 
 A section of the party has for some time been pushing for a larger role for Priyanka. The invocation of Rajiv Gandhi's name by Dwivedi is being seen as significant. If the former PM did reveal details about Priyanka's interest in politics dating back to as early as 1990, it would appear that it developed at a very young age; she would have been about 18 at the time. Party veterans recall at least one interview that Rajiv gave in the late 1980s where he seemed to suggest that his daughter had a greater interest in politics than his son did. 
 
Dwivedi has indirectly hinted that Rajiv did not speak about Rahul, raising the sensitive question as to whether the late leader had a different plan of succession in mind. 
 
Congress leaders are now waiting for a second instalment from Dwivedi: the details of what Rajiv reportedly told him. Party sources say it may come if Congress performs dismally in the elections, which would be an opportune time for insiders to raise questions about the leadership skills of Rahul Gandhi.

 Addressing a rally in Bareilly on Tuesday, Modi said <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> was plotting and praying to ensure that the next government turned out to be a weak one, stressing that a PM can be effective only if he has the backing of 300 or more <keyword id="6355553" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="MP">MP</keyword>s. "300 se jyada MP leke baithe hue PM ki baat duniya bhi theek se sunegi (The world will pay attention to a PM who has more than 300 MPs by his side)," he said. 
 
Modi invoked the stability card when he addressed a rally at Rewa in MP later in the day. Contending that a stable government was essential for development, he said, "No PM will be able to drive if people's mandate translates into a car with only three wheels. It is necessary that a four-wheeled government is selected to scale new heights of development." 
 
The switch from a conservative 272 — the magic figure in the 543-strong Lok Sabha — to an ambitious 300 attracted the attention of many in political circles, and left them wondering about the possible motivation. The last 72 hours have seen Modi casting himself as "future PM", and his setting sights higher on Tuesday could be part of the same strategy to fire up the base and throw the opponents off-balance. 
 
It could also be meant to tap into the anxiety that an unstable government will hurt the prospect of economic recovery — a worry which may lead the fence-sitters to back the frontrunner. 
 
Importantly, considering that "stability" has for long been Congress's theme, Modi's pitch also marked an audacious attempt to snatch the plank from his chief rival. 
 
Speaking in Bareilly, Modi alleged that Congress was "organizing yagnas" to ensure the next government was not a stable one. "They have now gone to the extent of praying that even if their party loses, a strong government does not assume power. The intention of Congress and parties like SP, BSP or Third Front is not to form the government but simply to act as spoilers," he said. 
 
Modi, who arrived at the rally more than two hours behind schedule, began by apologizing to the crowd for the delay, adding that "he would not betray the love shown to him by those who had spent hours waiting in the scorching sun". 
 He sought to make a connect with locals, simultaneously taking a dig at <keyword id="689" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi">Sonia Gandhi</keyword> who represents <keyword id="43068" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rae-Bareli">Rae Bareli</keyword>. "Soniaji's constituency may have become famous but Bareilly, which has already been famous through the hit song 'Jhumka gira re', will ensure that Congress, SP, BSP have a mighty fall in these polls," he said as the crowds cheered. 
 
He also played on the date — April 1 — saying "for the Congress government, each of the 365 days in the year is an April Fools' Day". Reiterating that UP has a big role to play – the state will send 80 MPs to Parliament — he ended his speech by again emphasizing on the need for an absolute majority. "Give me 300 seats and I promise you that I will give you a strong government that empowers people," he said.

Maneka Gandhi, who originally belongs to Delhi, is the senior-most MP among these women, having won her first election in 1989 on a Janata Dal ticket. She later joined the BJP and has always chosen Uttar Pradesh to contest elections - first Pilibhit and then Sultanpur. Jaya Prada, another actor-turned-politician, was born in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh but chose Uttar Pradesh to kickstart her political career even though she had earlier joined the TDP. Jaya Prada successfully contested the Rampur Lok Sabha seat in 2004 and 2009 elections on a Samajwadi Party ticket. Later, she joined the BJP in 2019. Dimple Yadav, senior SP leader and wife of Akhilesh Yadav, originally belongs to Uttarakhand but made Uttar Pradesh her home after her marriage to Akhilesh. Dimple Yadav began her career by losing a bypoll to Raj Babbar of the Congress from Firozabad in 2009 but won the Kannauj seat in a 2012 bye-election. She won the Kannauj seat in 2014 but lost in 2019. However, Dimple Yadav won the Mainpuri bye-election after the demise of Mulayam Singh Yadav in 2022. Among all these women leaders, it is only Union Minister Anupriya Patel of Apna Dal (S) who was born and brought up in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Lucknow, Jun 21 () The COVID-19 death toll in Uttar Pradesh increased to 550 after 21 fatalities were reported, the state government said in a statement on Sunday The total number of COVID-19 cases in the state is 17,731. Of the 21 COVID-19 deaths, three took place in Kanpur Nagar, two each in Meerut, Moradabad, Gorakhpur and Etawah, and one each in Ghaziabad, Hapur, Siddharthanagar, Bijnor, Mathura, Muzaffarnagar, Rae Bareli, Badaun, Jhansi and Farrukhabad, according to the statement Till now, as many as 10,995 COVID-19 patients have recovered from the disease, and have been discharged, it said.
