Tech companies, including Amazon, embraced this new world, partly because it drove massive demand for services such as cloud computing, social media, online entertainment and video conferencing.Now, with the pandemic ebbing, many companies have reversed course and are pushing staff to return to the office. Previous pronouncements about the revolutionary benefits of remote work have been replaced by vague, data-light arguments on productivity gains from being in the office. Even Zoom is giving up on remote work.This is especially true for companies that have spent millions of dollars in recent years building ostentatious headquarters buildings. Apple, Meta, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/michael-bloomberg-too-many-government-employees-wfh-billionaire-2023-8">Bloomberg</a> and Google all have gleaming HQs that would look very silly if those companies continued to embrace remote work.Amazon built a pair of glass spheres in the middle of Seattle in 2016 for its HQ. Without employees in there, this would just be a very expensive greenhouse. The company also spent months pitting various cities against each other for its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-second-headquarters-arlington-virginia-hq2-photos-2023-5">HQ2</a> office plan. Even before the pandemic, this had turned into a fiasco. But with the rise of remote work, the project looked even more misguided. Getting workers back into these spaces is a face-saving exercise to some degree.Insider has asked Amazon for comment on its RTO policy several times in recent months and the company has responded. In July, spokesperson Brad Glasser said there's "more energy, collaboration, and connections happening since we've been working together.""We continue to look at the best ways to bring more teams together in the same locations, and we'll communicate directly with employees as we make decisions that affect them," he added in an email.<h2>Amazon's RTO policy</h2><div type="image" title="The Amazon Spheres" height="3705" width="5348" msid="102996630" hostid="261" sizebytes="1608926"></div>This all began in February, when Amazon CEO Andy Jassy <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/company-news/andy-jassy-update-on-amazon-return-to-office">said in an internal memo</a> that the majority of employees would be required to come into the office "at least three days per week" starting in May.He said "collaborating and inventing is easier and more effective" when working in person.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-employees-plan-to-fight-against-return-to-office-policy-2023-2">Amazon's internal Slack channel blew up, with thousands of workers creating a petition to fight back.</a>Almost 30,000 Amazon employees signed the petition to protest the company's RTO mandate. That was close to 10% of the total corporate workforce.In the petition, staff added internal data supporting continued remote work and dozens of comments explaining why they oppose the change. Hubs are central locations assigned to each individual team, and employees have to work out of those hubs instead of any office nearest to their current city. One manager declared hubs in Seattle, New York, Houston, and Austin, Texas, for their team, according to one Slack message seen by Insider. The AWS chief told employees on Thursday that remote work makes it hard to innovate and collaborate, and those who disagree with the new policy are welcome to leave the company, according to a transcript of the meeting obtained by Business Insider. Garman addressed the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-rto-faq-document-spells-out-new-rule-2024-9">RTO policy</a> introduced by Amazon in September, which has faced <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-workers-blast-strict-rto-mandate-five-days-week-2024-9">strong pushback</a> from some employees. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Rockstar Games is mandating a return to the office for its employees from April, Bloomberg reported.</li><li>It comes ahead of the release of "Grand Theft Auto VI" next year.</li></ul>Rockstar Games just issued a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/return-to-office-mandates-employees-managers-fight-messy-remote-work-2023-11">return-to-office ultimatum</a>, a move it hopes will drive productivity and curb leaks ahead of one of the biggest gaming launches in over a decade.The developer behind the "Grand Theft Auto" games has asked employees to return to the office five days a week starting in April, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-02-28/-grand-theft-auto-maker-tells-staff-to-return-to-office-five-days-a-week?leadSource=uverify%20wall">Bloomberg reported</a>, as it enters the final stages of development for the franchise's next installment, "Grand Theft Auto VI."Like many companies issuing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/forcing-workers-back-office-risks-talent-exodus-dell-amazon-2024-2">RTO mandates</a>, Bloomberg said, Rockstar's head of publishing, Jenn Kolbe, cited "productivity" in an email to staff as one reason for the move to bring workers back ahead of the release of one of the most anticipated games ever.She didn't stop there, though: Employees were told "security" was a factor, too. <h2>IP and sales worth billions on the line</h2>Security has always been a huge priority at Rockstar.The company — which sold more than 195 million units of "Grand Theft Auto V" and has raked in about $8 billion since its release in 2013 — is secretive and asks employees to sign some of the strictest nondisclosure agreements in the industry to protect its intellectual property.For instance, Ned Luke, a voice actor for one of the main characters in the previous game, once said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reddit.com/r/GTA6/comments/155dqs2/rockstar_nda_strictness/?rdt=56400">he thought</a> he'd get fired from GTA V after his involvement was outed by a friend ahead of schedule. His work on the game had been kept secret up to that point.But in the run-up to the release of "Grand Theft Auto VI," <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/grand-theft-auto-6-netflix-games-streaming-2024-2">Rockstar</a>, which adopted remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic, has had several security issues to contend with.A major issue came in September 2022 after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gta-6-leaker-rockstar-games-with-tv-phone-amazon-firestick-2023-12">a hacker published early footage of the game</a>. The company blamed a "network intrusion in which an unauthorized third party illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information.""We are extremely disappointed to have any details of our next game shared with you all in this way," Rockstar said on X, then Twitter, at the time.The company faced another breach after its first official trailer for the game was leaked in December. That leak was suspected to come <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ign.com/articles/grand-theft-auto-6-leaks-may-have-just-come-from-a-rockstar-employees-son">from a Rockstar developer's son</a>, GTA Base said, adding that it appeared this person dumped on TikTok what he'd got hold of.Clearly, Rockstar has reason to feel angsty about employees being out of sight ahead of a release that will be 12 years in the making next year, when it's set to launch.It makes any mitigation tougher.RTO mandates have been met with fierce opposition from employees who feel they have been pushed back into the office over vague concepts such as productivity, collaboration, and boosting performance.Research published last month, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/return-to-office-mandates-remote-work-stock-returns-productivity-2024-1">based on analysis of RTO data from 137 S&amp;P 500 firms</a>, gave weight to the arguments of workers critical of RTO mandates after finding the policies made little to no difference to their stated goals.The gaming industry has proved remote work is productive and practical, with games like "Spider-Man 2" being made from home, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier previously said.Rockstar staffers will likely point to this as a reason not to drag them back into the office.The Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain said Rockstar's decision came a year after 170 Rockstar workers signed a petition "opposing mandatory 3-day office work."Rockstar workers represented by the union accused the developer of "broken promises" and said they had concerns around a "heightened risk of overwork," <a target="_blank" href="https://kotaku.com/inside-rockstar-games-culture-of-crunch-1829936466">which the company has been accused of in the past</a>.One anonymous worker quoted in a statement from the union said that working from home had "been a lifeline" that allowed staff to balance care responsibilities, manage disabilities, and relocate as they needed.Whether Rockstar decides to soften its stance remains to be seen.

'Grand Theft Auto VI' means every day is an office day for Rockstar workers

<keyword id="461594" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="regional-transport-offices">Regional Transport Offices</keyword> in the national capital are set to go cashless from January when fees for all services including driving licence, auto permit and fitness certificate can be paid electronically. 
 The <keyword id="62110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="transport-department">Transport Department</keyword> has started installing Point of Sale (PoS) machines at its zonal offices and the trial run of the cashless transaction system is being carried out at some places. 
 "From January, people coming to <keyword id="48945" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="RTO">RTO</keyword> offices can pay fee of various services -- permits, driving licence, fitness certificates - using their debit, credit cards. Applicants won't be required to make payments in cash," a senior government official said. 
 
There are 14 zonal offices of the Transport Department in the city. The official said that the move would ensure hassle-free services for the people of Delhi. 
 
The step is in line with the Delhi government's plan to bring all departments under cashless transaction system. 
 
"At present, e-PoS machines are being installed at all zonal offices. Besides, computer software of the department is also being updated in view of the cashless transactions," the official said. 
 Earlier this month, Transport Minister <keyword id="6374609" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Satyendar-Jain">Satyendar Jain</keyword> had directed his department to start accepting fees and payments in the form of bank drafts and pay orders for all transport services in view of cash crunch after demonetisation.

The petition, which was shared with CEO Andy Jassy's leadership team last week according to Galetti's note, was signed by roughly 30,000 employees. The petition followed the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazons-hr-boss-rejects-employee-remote-work-petition-2023-3">RTO mandate that Jassy outlined last month</a>, which asks employees to come into the office three times a week beginning in May.Employees shared messages of disappointment on the company's Slack channel following Galetti's announcement. Insider Today: Nike's airball

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Deutsche Bank staff have criticized the company's new return-to-office policies.</li><li>Staff have complained about the lack of office space and bottlenecks at the company, a union official said.</li></ul>Deutsche Bank is facing a wave of backlash from staff after introducing new return-to-office mandates, joining a host of companies that are walking back their flexible working policies. A significant number of staff based in Germany criticized the new policies in an internal messaging board, according to a memo sent on Thursday by CEO Christian Sewing and COO Rebecca Short, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-02-27/deutsche-bank-s-plan-to-get-workers-back-to-office-hits-roadbump">as reported by Bloomberg</a>. The German financial giant recently told staff globally that it would require them to<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/deutsche-bank-remote-work-return-to-office-monday-friday-2024-2"> return to the office</a> at least three days a week from June, and one of those days has to be Monday or Friday.Staff will be allowed to work remotely for a maximum of 40% of their time — effectively two days in a five-day working week — a bank spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider. Meanwhile, those at managing director level will be expected in the office four days a week, the spokesperson said. Sewing and Short were behind the initial policy change but said in the memo that they would be renewing discussions with labor representatives about the move, per Bloomberg. "There's enormous resistance among staff," Stephan Szukalski, the head of the labor union DBV, which represents Deutsche Bank staff, told Bloomberg via email. Szukalski, who is also part of the bank's supervisory board, said there isn't enough office space and that staff are already complaining about bottlenecks. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.dbv-gewerkschaft.de/wp-content/uploads/Handelsblatt_Einschraenkung-Homeoffice-Deutsche-Bank_02-24.pdf">Szukalski told German business newspaper Handelsblatt</a> that some employees were coming into the office at 7 a.m. so they could find somewhere to work next to their team due to overcrowding. "This is an unnecessary battlefront for Deutsche Bank that destroys reputation and trust," Szukalski told Bloomberg. The spokesperson told BI: "The bank remains committed to our hybrid working model, which has been received extremely positively by staff. Its new guidelines will ensure consistency across the bank and strengthen senior leadership presence in the office, which remains the primary place of work."Deutsche Bank was one of the first companies to introduce <a target="_blank" href="http://v/">hybrid working policies</a> after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, allowing staff to work from home for up to three days a week. Many major companies have u-turned on their flexible working policies and now require workers to return to the office most, or some, of the time. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-making-workers-employees-return-to-office-rto-wfh-hybrid-2023-1">Google, Meta, and Salesforce</a> are among the firms who previously embraced remote worked before changing tack. Most recently, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/general-motors-bring-back-employees-to-office-three-days-week-2023-12">General Motors</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/thousands-of-sap-employees-feel-betrayed-by-firms-rto-policies-2024-2">SAP</a>, and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ey-tracking-office-attendance-data-teams-disregard-rto-policies-2024-1">EY</a> amped up their return-to-office mandates. Future of work expert Dan Schawbel previously told BI that RTO mandates are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rto-mandates-creating-huge-disruption-in-workers-lives-experts-2024-2">creating a "huge disruption" in workers' lives</a> because many of them made major decisions based on the premise that they can work remotely. This could include buying a house, moving further away from the office, and having children. "I think RTO mandates will reduce employee morale unless it is handled very carefully," Nicholas Bloom, a Stanford economics professor, also told BI previously. "You are forcing employees back to the office, which is unlikely to be popular as otherwise they would have come of their own volition."

A spokesperson told Eugene returning to the office meant "more energy, connection, and collaboration."For Amazon employees, the RTO mandates have been shrouded in mystery and confusion. And for some, the number of days they're in the office doesn't feel like a metric worth being judged on.Either way, don't expect the fight to stop anytime soon. A key measure of the likelihood employees would recommend Dell as a great place to work <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tell-dell-annual-survey-results-show-employees-frustration-rto-push-2024-7">dropped by double digits from last year</a>, writes BI's Polly Thompson.But getting angry is really the only thing employees fighting RTO mandates can do. From Amazon to Dell, Corporate America's in-office crackdown is in full swing

Those with cyber insurance will likely be checking the fine print of their policies to see what's covered.The chaos is a stark illustration of the vulnerability of global IT systems.
