technology that could save 3.5 million babies from going blind

<ul><li>ROP is said to be responsible for 20% of childhood <keyword id="16753" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="blindness" source="Orion">blindness</keyword>. </li><li>ROP is an eye disease that can occur in babies who are premature or weigh less than three pounds at birth. </li><li>The reason behind the high incidence of ROP in India is low awareness and lack of ROP-trained <keyword id="405920" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ophthalmologists" source="Orion">ophthalmologists</keyword>.</li></ul><keyword id="74574" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="retinopathy-of-prematurity" source="Orion">Retinopathy of prematurity</keyword> (ROP) is responsible for 20% of childhood blindness in India, according to Dr Saurabh Choudhry, CEO of ICARE Eye Hospital. According to him, an early diagnosis of ROP, a potentially blinding disease, can help save around 5,000 children from going blind in India every year. About one in 1,000 children in India is blind. Unfortunately, the trend is only growing. “Every fifth child who is blind in India can be attributed to ROP, which could have been prevented with timely intervention,” said Dr Choudhry. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="What is retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)?" comment="subhead" text="What is retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)?">What is retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)?</cmsannotation> ROP is an eye disease that occurs in babies who are premature (i.e born early) — or weigh less than three pounds at birth. It usually happens when abnormal blood vessels grow in the retina and can cause serious vision problems, later on. According to <a href="https://www.nei.nih.gov/learn-about-eye-health/eye-conditions-and-diseases/retinopathy-prematurity">reports</a>, mild cases of ROP in babies can get better without treatment. But others need treatment to protect their vision and prevent blindness. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent blindness. “A premature baby born before 7 months of gestation with very low birth weight (below 1.5 kg) who was admitted in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and received Oxygen therapy is the most vulnerable for developing ROP,” Dr Chaudhary explained. Around 3.5 million premature babies are born every year in India, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). There are only about 200 ROP specialists in India currently. “The availability and affordability of services related to the care of premature babies need strengthening, along with improving the quality of neonatal care and expansion of screening and treatment programmes. Increasing awareness, training pediatricians, ophthalmologists and nurses in ROP can save more children from this preventable cause of blindness,” Dr Chaudhary added. As many studies in India found that even more mature and heavier babies developed ROP, the revised guidelines recommend screening all babies with birth weight of up to 2,000 gm or gestational age of up to 34 weeks,” he said. ‘Early diagnosis of retinopathy of prematurity can save 5,000 babies from going blind’

Both the companies reported robust domestic volume growth, but analysts continue to worry about exports and EV businesses that might affect profitability going forward. The stocks of Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor have also run-up by over 30% in the last three months. Analysts remained cautious with regards to valuations, in spite of their confidence on double digit domestic volume growth in two- and three-wheelers, as well as market share gains in the offing due to new launches. Bajaj Auto: Exports enter slow lane Thanks to Triumph and KTM sales, Bajaj has been able to grow its volumes by 22% in Q3, with its average selling prices going up by 6.5%. It was also able to grow the market share of Triumph, and in select South markets it went as high as 20%. In spite of its performance, this success might not be replicated soon, experts worry. Bajaj’s export volumes fell 7% YoY in Q3. While it affects all players, it hit Bajaj more because exports contribute 37% of volumes from exports. This business is also key to maintaining its margins around and above 20%. It might also see pressure in the coming quarters due to its aggressive EV push. “The company has aggressive plans for the EV network expansion &amp; new launches, which can drag overall margins. But most believe that its domestic volumes might grow at around 10-12% over FY23 to FY26 on the back of increasing EV sales and upcoming premium launches. “Bajaj has seen a sharp revival in domestic 3Ws, thanks to pent-up demand; domestic 2Ws are buoyant with the industry tailwind; exports are gradually recovering and the company is finally making some serious strides in electrification as well. Thanks to multiple launches within EV and scooter space like <keyword id="20331585" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zest" source="keywords">Zest</keyword>, Jupiter, Ntorq, iQube, Radeon and <keyword id="20331586" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="raider" source="keywords">Raider</keyword>, its domestic market share went up to 16% in FY23, and 14% in FY18. Analysts see more juice in the business for the company which has reported a 25% volume growth in the third quarter. “We see FY25 share at 18% on rising share of scooters, premium motorcycles. We estimate outperformance in overseas markets with new products/better penetration and build in FY23-26 domestic and or export 2W volume compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) at 12% and 6% respectively,” says a report by Nuvama. TVS’ export revenues fell marginally by 0.9% on a year on year basis. Analysts also see its export business recovering gradually and peg it at lower single digits through FY25. Its exports contribute around 22% of its total volumes, unlike Bajaj. The street’s top concern is its rising expenses due increasing input costs as well as its slow trudge ahead in average selling prices (ASPs). “TVS Motor’s EBITDA is 3% below our estimates due to lower-than-expected ASPs and higher-than expected other expenses, partly offset by better-than-expected gross margins. Revenues increased by 1% QoQ led by 3% increase in volumes, partly offset by 1% decline in ASPs,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities.

Two CRPF men were killed and three others injured after terrorists attacked a road opening party of the police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in South Kashmir's Pulwama district on Monday, officials said. The attack took place in the Kandzal area of Pampore. How one inspirational talk became a ‘vision’ for this Startup

RAIPUR: Maoists ambushed a team of security personnel in tribal Bastar region on Friday, killing seven security personnel including a <keyword id="42808" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sub-inspector">sub-inspector</keyword> near Kuakonda in Dantewada district of <keyword id="43945" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Chhattisgarh">Chhattisgarh</keyword>. 
 Quoting preliminary reports, police said a sub-inspector <keyword id="562831" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Vivek-Shukla">Vivek Shukla</keyword> was among the dead. The security personnel were part of a road opening party (ROP) when the rebels attacked them. 
 The incident took place in Shyamgiri hills, under <keyword id="289665" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Kuakonda-police">Kuakonda police</keyword> station limits, in Dantewada district. The <keyword id="6361689" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Naxalites">Naxalites</keyword> set ablaze motorcycles, belonging to the security personnel, and also looted their weapons. 
 
Two security personnel, who were injured in the encounter, have been evacuated and are now being shifted to the hospital at Jagdalpur. 
 
Police said encounter was still on as the forces retaliated fire. 
 
Additional security reinforcements have been rushed to the spot to carryout search and combing operations to flush out the rebels.

India lost 2%, led by heavy losses in Tata Steel; Nikkei lost 1% as PPI didn't impress, while Aussie snapped a 3day losing streak, led by a big pop in Gold Miners and BHP. The US 10YY is dropping fast this AM, falling to its lowest level in 2 weeks near 2.32% - this follows sharp demand for Bunds, pushing Germany's 10YY near 65bp early. The Greenback is seeing weakness this AM into Fed Week, as the Euro bolstered by a stronger-than-expected survey of IFO German business confidence.
