<keyword id="3590566" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="RNT-Capital">RNT Capital</keyword>, the VC fund set up by <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword>, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, is reportedly considering deploying $300 million across several start-ups based in India, Southeast Asia and the US. 
 
The VC fund is headquartered jointly in Mumbai and Singapore, and will most probably be investing $10-15 million funds in tech businesses. 
 It was in February 2016 that Ratan Tata’s investment firm, <keyword id="1716774" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="RNT-Associates">RNT Associates</keyword>, had partnered with the University of California (UC Investments) in a bid to jointly fund <keyword id="770060" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indian-start-ups">Indian start-ups</keyword> over the next 10 years.

The first two start-ups to have held discussions with RNT Capital are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Exclusive-InMobi-Founder-CEO-Naveen-Tewari-on-how-to-never-give-up/articleshow/53224106.cms">InMobi</a>, the mobile advertising platform and Qikpod, the logistics start-up. Other than these Indian start-ups, the fund would also be investing in two US-based companies.

“The financing round at InMobi is still to be finalised but the other three investments (including QikPod), are likely to close soon,” a source told TOI, requesting anonymity.

The core team of this fund includes Singapore-based Mathias Imbach, Tim Recker (MD, Private Equity and Real Assets at University of California Regents) and Mayank Singhal (former associate director at Singapore investment firm Temasek Holdings’ Indian unit).

The 81 year old invested his private wealth in 30 startups, and is constantly adding to the list. His latest investment is into <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/ratan-tata-to-invest-in-tork-motors/articleshow/71580081.cms">Tork Motors </a>— an electric vehicle startup. Tork Motors will introduce its flagship motorcycle, T6X in the coming months. Tata is among the world’s most influential industrialists. He set up a RNT Associate in 2009, three years before retiring from Tata Sons. Since then, Tata invested in taxi aggregators, e-vehicle makers to jewellery lines. And, he has made good bets too, as the valuations of all the startups he backed, have zoomed. "The thing that I am intrigued by first is a start-up that has an interesting concept which excites me. If it doesn’t excite me, I really don’t need to make an investment in that company," said Tata. Being associated with the Tata name also brought the much-needed endorsement for other investors into these ventures. "His involvement is really inspiring when it comes to existing employees and even attracting top talent,” says Nidhi Agarwal, founder of startup Kaaryah who also managed to bring Tata on-board, as an advisor. Mumbai, May 7 () Ratan Tata, who has pumped in hundreds of crores of rupees into start-ups since his retirement from the Tata Group, has invested an undisclosed amount in a 17-year-old kid's pharma start-up Generic Aadhaar, in his personal capacity. Generic Aadhaar was founded by the Thane kid, Arjun Deshpande, in April 2019, when he was 16. It supplies quality generic drugs from reputed manufacturers at up to 80 per cent lesser cost and other medicines 20-30 per cent cheaper. The boy, an alumni of DAV Public School, Thane, began his entrepreneurial journey with the aim of bringing affordable medicines to the poor, a statement issued by his PR agency said on Thursday. It did not disclose how much Tata has invested. The chairman emeritus of Tata Sons has so far invested in over a dozen start-ups since he retired from the group in December 2012 and all his investments are routed through his investment company RNT Associates. Some of his investments include Ola, Paytm, Snapdeal, CureFit, Urban Ladder and Avanti Finance. Generic Aadhaar sources generic drugs directly from manufacturers and sells it to retailers, eliminating 16-20 per cent wholesaler margins. The start-up boasts of an annual revenue of Rs 6 crore and is looking at a revenue of Rs 150-200 crore in the next three years, the statement said. It also claimed to have employed about 55 persons, including pharmacists, IT engineers and marketing professionals. Deshpande plans to partner with 1,000 pharmacies on a franchisee-based model and expand his reach to Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Delhi, Goa and Rajasthan. Generic Aadhaar will provide all the support to the unorganised sector by bringing the right technology, IT infrastructure and branding to the forefront. "Our business model gives us an edge over others as we aim to bring affordable healthcare to millions. Our mission is to provide senior citizens and pensioner the care they deserve by delivering inexpensive medicines," says Deshpande. Currently, it supplies diabetes and hypertension drugs but will soon start offering cancer drugs also at rates lower than the market price and has also tied up with four WHO-GMP certified manufacturers at Palghar, Ahmedabad, Puducherry and Nagpur. It provides quality and affordable medicines directly from WHO-GMP facility and has tied up with 30 retailers from Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru and Odisha following a profit-sharing model. Tatan Tata invests in pharma start-up Generic Aadhaar

Now, the septuagenarian wants <keyword id="6383155" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Trusts">Tata Trusts</keyword>, a group of charitable institutions that own 66% of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/breaking-news-n-chandrasekaran-is-the-new-tata-sons-chairman/articleshow/56500469.cms">Tata Sons</a>, to invest in <keyword id="910850" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="social-enterprises">social enterprises</keyword>. As of now, these enterprises can only get grants from Tata Trusts. 
 
For this, a three-tier structure is being set up, which would fund socially relevant businesses before they receive support from Tata Sons; following this, they would catch the attention of several other investors.

"I have Mr Tata's support to set up a new fund that will straddle the middle path between philanthropy and venture capital. The fund will sit outside the Tata Trusts' architecture but will invest in socially relevant and viable businesses incubated within the trust," Manoj Kumar, head of innovation at the Tata Trusts, told ET. 
 
Tata Trusts has its innovation centres in Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which would be used as the first layer in this structure. 
 
Socially relevant business ideas will get funds through grants that these institutions get, and the ones that will prove their worth would then get transferred to the Foundation for Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship (FISE), under Kumar's leadership. 
 
FISE will be the second layer of the structure. 
 
The third layer would then be a fund for enterprises with maximum potential for social change.

In last FY, the trusts collectively spent about Rs 800 crore in the form of grants, out of which more than two-third amount was spent on health, education, natural resource management and livelihood.
