Karthik had played for RCB for the first time in 2015 and 2016. He scored a total of 326 runs in the 15 matches in the 2024 season at a strike rate of 187.36 but his impact went beyond just the number of runs he scored. Speaking about Karthik's appointment RCB's Director of Cricket Mo Bobat said that the former India cricketer was thrilling on the field and will be an excellent addition to the coaching group. "DK is an excellent addition to our coaching group. He was thrilling to watch on the field, and I'm sure he will be just as impactful as a coach. His longevity and track record as a player speaks volumes about his skill and dedication. I know he will bring that same quality and commitment to this new professional chapter," Bobat was quoted in a release from RCB. The 39-year-old, who made his ODI debut for India as a 19-year-old in 2004, has vast batting experience of over two decades during which he played 26 Tests, 94 One-Day Internationals, and 60 T20 Internationals for India. He also featured in 257 IPL games, scoring an aggregate of 4842 runs, including 22 fifties. On the appointment as Batting Coach and Batting Mentor, Dinesh Karthik said, "Coaching at a professional level is incredibly exciting for me and is something I'm truly passionate about as a new chapter in my life. Hopefully, the breadth of my experiences as a player can contribute to the development of the group and bring added value. "I believe that cricket success hinges not only on technical proficiency but also on match intelligence and composure. I am eager to coach and mentor our batting group, helping them not only refine their method but also develop the keen match awareness needed to excel under pressure. It's also great that I can continue my association with RCB as the franchise continues to move from strength to strength," he added. Karthik's batting style and electric presence on the field had also made him an instant favourite. His ability to shape the team's fortunes with his cool-headed approach to batting made him a natural fit in RCB's quest of nurturing and guiding young Indian batters alongside coach Andy Flower. RCB appoints former cricketer Dinesh Karthik as new Batting Coach and Mentor

They boast of some of the biggest hitters of the cricket ball in the world today. It is their bowling that has more often than not let them down. As the IPL 7 began, breaking the norm, RCB bowlers stepped up and performed admirably contributing to their good start. However, against <keyword id="13880" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Mumbai-Indians">Mumbai Indians</keyword> at Wankhede on Tuesday, they were wayward conceding 25 extras which in the end proved to be the difference between the sides. 
 <keyword id="346085" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="RCB-coach">RCB coach</keyword> <keyword id="13837" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Daniel-Vettori">Daniel Vettori</keyword> refused to pinpoint the reason(s) behind the team's fourth defeat in seven games but did acknowledge that the bowling let them down against MI. 
 
"Bowling let us down a little bit. My main issue is mainly around the extras. I think the extras contributed a lot to that. 25 extras is far too many and that was almost the difference between the two teams," Vettori said during a post-match press conference on Monday. 
 Chasing 188 is by no means an easy task but with the likes of Chris Gayle, <keyword id="6354486" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Virat-Kohli">Virat Kohli</keyword> and <keyword id="77602" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="AB-de-Villiers">AB de Villiers</keyword> in their ranks, RCB must have backed themselves to get over the line. They were in good shape even after losing both their openers, sitting pretty on 94/2 with Kohli and De Villiers in the middle. However, they lost both the batsmen within the space of six deliveries making life difficult for the upcoming batsmen. 
 
"It was a tough total to chase. 190 in any T20 game is hard and the start that we got was fantastic. Chris and Parthiv set the tone and Virat picked it up as well. We lost some crucial wickets and when you do that you put up pressure on guys coming in. It's the guys that are set who need to kick on. Unfortunately it didn't happen today," Vettori observed. 
 The match was also marred by controversy with some ugly scenes being played out in the middle involving RCB paceman <keyword id="427499" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Mitchell-Starc">Mitchell Starc</keyword> and MI allrounder Kieron Pollard. Vettori said it was something that nobody wants to see on a cricket field but refused to speculate anything 
 
"It's obviously an incident you never want to see on a cricket field." 
 
"I haven't had the chance to talk to Mitchell or anyone else involved. But I am sure that the match referee will be involved. We will wait and see what it is before we speculate on anything," he said.

IPL 2023: Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore emerge as experts' top picks

The newly appointed coach of India’s cricket team will be earning somewhere around Rs 7 crore to 7.5 crore a year. "<keyword id="6354756" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BCCI">BCCI</keyword> is going to make an offer of more than Rs 7 crore to <keyword id="11712" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shastri">Shastri</keyword>. This is the same amount which (predecessor) <keyword id="6364325" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anil-Kumble">Anil Kumble</keyword> had asked from the board during his presentation in May. But it can't be more than Rs 7.5 crore annually," a top functionary told TOI on Saturday. Shastri was earning Rs 7 to Rs7.5 crore when he was associated as team director. Sources informed The Times of India, the core support staff, meaning the batting, bowling and fielding coaches who are going to work with Shastri, won't be making more than Rs 2 crore annually. This will, however, be a substantial hike for the likes of <keyword id="66286" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Bangar">Sanjay Bangar</keyword> (incumbent batting coach) and, if appointed, Bharat Arun, who is Shastri's preferred choice as full-time bowling coach. We are looking for a long-term coach, for three years," Shah told select media during an interaction at the BCCI office here on Thursday. The BCCI secretary said there has been no precedent of having different coaches for different formats but ultimately the decision rests with the Cricket Advisory Committee. The CAC comprises Jatin Paranjape, Ashok Malhotra and Sulakshana Naik. "There is no precedent of different coaches for different format in Indian cricket. Besides, we have a number of players who are all-format players. There are many common players across formats such as Rishabh Pant, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma," he said. "Ultimately, this is the Cricket Advisory Committee's call. I have to implement what they decide," he added. Shah said even a foreign coach can be considered depending on the CAC's recommendations. "If the CAC selects a foreign coach, I can't interfere," he added. The BCCI secretary informed that the vacant post of one national selector is expected to be filled up soon. "A few interviews for the selector's post have already happened. We will announce it soon," he said. Cricket Victoria CEO Nick Cummins had claimed in a media interaction here last month that the three boards are in talks to revive the competition. "The Cricket Victoria CEO has not spoken to me about this. No such discussions are taking place. I would have told you had I been a part of any talks," Shah said. He also said the ICC has not approached BCCI on the topic of creating windows for country-based T20 leagues. "That is ICC's prerogative. It is a fact that the ICC is not touching the IPL. In fact, they have given it a two-and-a-half month window instead of just about two months, we are grateful to the ICC for that," he said. Shah said the board will speak to the ICC about hosting the World Test Championship final at a different venue from 2027. The first two editions of Test cricket's summit clash have been organised in England, including the one for the current 2023-25 cycle. "We have spoken about the ICC for 2027. There are only three main Test centres, India, England and Australia. You cannot hold it in Australia during that window or even in India. Even in Bengaluru, it rains during that time," he said. Rahul Dravid will have to reapply if he wants to continue as head coach after June: Jay Shah

The impact player rule has had a heavy bearing on the ongoing edition with teams crossing 250-run mark as many as eight times so far. Players, coaches as well as experts have pointed out the challenges which the impact player rule poses to the bowlers, saying that it allows teams to have extended batting line-ups. India captain <keyword id="19899523" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rohit-Sharma" source="keywords">Rohit Sharma</keyword> has stated that the rule hurts all-rounders as they are not getting enough bowling opportunities. "Impact player rule was brought in as a test case. On the bright side, it is providing additional playing opportunities to two <keyword id="20619603" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-players" source="keywords">Indian players</keyword>," he said in an interaction with select media at the BCCI office here on Thursday. "Isn't it important that two Indian players are getting a chance? The game is also becoming more competitive," he added. Shah said all stakeholders will sit down in a meeting likely to be held after the <keyword id="19921630" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="T20-World-Cup" source="keywords">T20 World Cup</keyword> to decide on it. "But still, if the players feel that this is not alright we will speak on it. However, no one has said anything about it yet. After the IPL and the World Cup, we will have a meeting and decide," he said. "After the World Cup, we will consult with players, franchise and broadcasters and decide about the future course. It's not a permanent rule nor am I saying we will move past it," he added. Shah said India's T20 World Cup-bound players for the Caribbean and the USA, who are currently busy with the IPL, need no rest as competition is perfect preparation ahead of the mega event. "Why do you want to rest players? This is (as good as a) practice session, you cannot get any better opportunity (to prepare) than this," Shah said. "There is a cosmopolitan team in front of you, one team has a bowler from New Zealand, the other has a bowler from Australia and the next one has a bowler from Sri Lanka," he added. Shah said IPL is the best way to prepare for the Indian players as a Jasprit Bumrah gets a chance to gauge a marauding batter like Travis Head well ahead of the World Cup. "If we rest a bowler he won't get a chance to bowl at Travis Head. When (Jasprit) Bumrah will bowl to Travis Head, he will understand where to bowl to him and how. There is no better opportunity," he said. Focussing on women's cricket" Shah said the focus has also been on improving women's cricket by adding more fixtures to their calendar. "Women's cricket is going on full fledged and it is being managed no less than men's cricket. There is a World Cup in Bangladesh so we have maintained our bilateral relationship and played a series," Shah said. "We have put our focus 51 per cent on women's cricket and 49 per cent on men's because we are doing good in men's cricket so we are taking women's cricket on priority (basis). Their match fees has also increased so they have income as well," he added. However, Shah said there is no possibility of an increase in the number of teams for the Women's Premier League. "Let it be five teams for now. The media and sponsorship rights are set for five years and adding more teams will only create issues for them. The franchises have to sustain as well," he said. But he later admitted to dropping himself from the squad. "It was a pretty easy decision. I went to Faf and the coaches after the last game (vs Mumbai Indians) and said it was probably time we tried someone else (in his place)," Maxwell said in the post-match press meet. "It's actually a good time to give myself a bit of a <keyword id="21320294" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mental-and-physical-break" source="Orion">mental and physical break</keyword>, get my body right. If I'm required to get in during the tournament, I can, hopefully, get back into a solid mental and physical space where I can make an impact," he added. This is the second time in his career that Maxwell has opted out of competitive cricket in order to gather himself. He had taken a similar break in October 2019, stating that he felt mentally and physically ruined at that time. The 35-year-old made his comeback a couple of months later. In the ongoing <keyword id="19906063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IPL" source="keywords">IPL</keyword>, Maxwell has been quite underwhelming with the bat in the six matches he has played this season, contributing just 32 runs at an average of 5.33 and a strike-rate of 94. Twenty eight of those 32 runs came against Kolkata Knight Riders alone, helped to a great degree by two dropped catches. "I have been in this situation in the past where you can keep playing and get yourself deeper into a hole. We have had a pretty big deficiency after the power play, which has been my area of strength over the last couple of seasons. "I felt like I wasn't contributing with the bat, and with the results and the position we find ourselves on the table, I think it's a good time to give someone else an opportunity to show their wares, and hopefully, someone can make that spot their own," a candid Maxwell said. The big-hitting Australian, however, still hoped to return and make an impact in the later stages of the tournament. "The management here has been outstanding. I don't think I've had a better six months in cricket leading into this tournament. So, it's frustrating when it ends up like this. But if I can get my body and my mind right, there's no reason I can't finish the tournament well if I do get another opportunity," he said. The sudden dip in his form was surprising, considering the hot run he had in the run-up to the IPL. Maxwell had made 552 runs from 17 T20Is from November onwards, averaging 42 and his strike-rate was an impressive 185. But the Victorian started the IPL with a first-ball duck against Chennai Super Kings in an away match, and from that point his fortunes plummeted. "T20 cricket is a pretty fickle game. Even if you look at the first game, I ran one off the middle of the bat to the keeper. I picked up the length, saw a scoring opportunity, but opened the face a little bit too much. When you are going well, that goes wide of the (wicketkeeper's) gloves, you get a boundary. You are 4 off 1, and you are away for the tournament," he noted. Maxwell said luck was not on his side in this tournament. "I probably just haven't got away. In the first few games, I feel I made reasonably good decisions (for shot selection). But I was finding ways to get out. It can happen in T20 cricket and when it snowballs like that, you can go searching and try too hard and forget the basics of the game," he said. Maxwell experienced a similar barren run in IPL 2020 while playing for Punjab Kings. During that season, the Australian scored a mere 108 runs from 11 matches and failed to hit a single six. However, Maxwell did not draw parallels between the two seasons. "I was bowling really well back then. I was actually playing more as a spinner. We had KL (Rahul) and Mayank (Agarwal) who were the two leading run-scorers at that time. So, there weren't a lot of balls left in the game (for him). I wasn't able to get any match rhythm. So, I said the same thing to the Punjab management that we can have an overseas bowler in my place. "But we didn't have an off-spinner, so, I sort of played as an overseas off-spinner who could bat a little bit," he explained.
