The growth in gold loan disbursal rates month on month this year could also put Nifty and Sensex’s growth to shame. In just September 2024, gold loans grew an astounding 51%, up from 40.9% in August, 30.5% in June, and just 14.8% in March. <h2 style="margin-bottom: 0.7em; line-height: 1.3; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 24px; background: 0px 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">Hey, wait up for me, says LAS</h2>In lockstep with the elder, gold loan sibling, advances against shares and bonds have also been inching up since 2022. Data from RBI (Reserve Bank of India) notes that as of September 2022, the outstanding quantum of loans that were taken against shares (LAS) and bonds stood at Rs 7,397.94 crores. This inched up to Rs 7,764 crore in September 2023. Come 2024, and it looked like this was LAS’ time to shine. Loans swiftly skyrocketed, with outstanding loans in this category going up from Rs 8,492 crore in March 2022 to a staggering Rs 9,546 crore at the end of September 2024. Naturally, the smoke of LAS has its fire in the record inflows that Indians are pouring into the stock market and mutual funds month on month. Per AMFI (<keyword id="134904" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Association-of-Mutual-Funds-in-India" source="Orion">Association of Mutual Funds in India</keyword>), the net AUM (assets under management) of India’s mutual fund industry grew to Rs 67,25,614.61 crores in October 2024, up from Rs 67,09,259.24 crores in September 2024. Even the number of retail mutual fund folios, which include equity, hybrid, and solution-oriented mutual funds, burgeoned to 17,23,52,296 in October, as compared to 16,81,61,366 in September. The same goes for stock investments in India, where the number of new demat accounts that are added every month just simply refuses to climb down. As of last month, total demat accounts in the country stood at 17.9 crore, which is more than the entire population of full-fledged nations like Japan (12.45 crore), Russia (14.38 crore), and Bangladesh (17.3 crore). In fact, since February this year, the monthly growth of LAS has been hitting double digits. From 11.3% in March to 21.6% in May to 26.8% in August, growth in LAS has been exceptional, hitting 22.9% in September this year. For context, monthly growth in the LAS segment was at a mere 5% in September 2023. <h2 style="margin-bottom: 0.7em; line-height: 1.3; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 24px; background: 0px 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">What's driving the growth?</h2>It's a win-win for both the bank and the customer. Customers love them because LAS is available at a lower interest rate compared to unsecured personal loans. You can get a loan at an interest rate of anywhere between 9 and 12% by pledging your gold, MF units, or shares. Compare this to over 10-28% rates, which is the range where unsecured personal loans charge interest. Banks love <keyword id="827883" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Secured-Loans" source="Orion">secured loans</keyword> since they are well-secured. In case you default on paying back, the bank can sell off your gold, shares, or mutual fund units to recover the amount. This takes a lot of stress off the banks, which are already dealing with secured loans’ riskier sibling-<keyword id="947940" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="unsecured-lending" source="Orion">unsecured lending</keyword>. High NPAs (non-performing assets) and non-payments in the unsecured borrowing space have already put RBI on red alert, which is why the apex bank is tightening the screws on unsecured lending, which was well on its way to becoming a ticking time bomb. As a result, credit growth has moderated to 12.8% YoY in October, as against the 19.3% rise recorded in the year-ago period. Yet it's not like the banks won't feel the heat. Analysts at Nomura note that <keyword id="23954457" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="personal-loan-delinquencies" source="Orion">personal loan delinquencies</keyword> in India that have been overdue by over 90 days rose to 5.1% in the last financial year, as opposed to just 3.9% in the year prior. <h2 style="margin-bottom: 0.7em; line-height: 1.3; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 24px; background: 0px 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">How does it work?</h2>Both these loans work on a similar principle: Your <keyword id="857141" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="loan-amount" source="Orion">loan amount</keyword> is equal to a certain percentage of the actual market value of your asset. This is known as the LTV (loan-to-value ratio). In the case of gold and debt mutual funds, RBI mandates that this LTV be about 75-80%. So, for every Rs 100 of gold or debt mutual fund unit you pledge, your maximum loan amount cannot exceed Rs 80. If you pledge gold, which has a market value of Rs 10 lakh, you can take a loan of up to Rs 8,00,000. In the case of shares and mutual fund units, this limit is set at 50%. So, your shares worth Rs 5,00,000 can only get you a loan worth Rs 2,50,000. But the bright side? You can continue earning returns on your investments and pay interest only on the amount you use, since this loan works as an overdraft facility. <h2 style="margin-bottom: 0.7em; line-height: 1.3; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 24px; background: 0px 0px; text-rendering: optimizelegibility;">Super safe, you say?</h2>Interest rates on both of these loans are very much dependent on the market value of the asset, which wildly fluctuates on a day-to-day basis. So, in case the value of your asset falls, you’ll have to keep a margin or more of the same asset in order to continue with the loan and maintain the LTV balance. Failure to do so could mean the bank can even sell off your asset. Says financial planner Nema Chaya Buch. “Yes, LAS offers easy availability of funds since these loans come with a lower interest rate as compared to personal loans. Also, you continue to earn average returns of 10–13% on your equity investments. But the downside is, in case of emergency, those pledged securities cannot be sold. Also, if the equity market goes down, then the bank may ask for additional collateral. Raghvendra Nath, MD, Ladderup Wealth Management notes that taking a LAS is best when the value of your securities has appreciated significantly. “This allows you to maximize the loan amount based on your collateral while also addressing financial needs without having to liquidate your investment portfolio. However, there are notable disadvantages to consider. The market risk is significant; a substantial decline in market value could lead to margin calls, which may incur fees and charges if there are delays or prepayments, ultimately increasing the effective cost of borrowing. Furthermore, failure to make timely payments could result in the loss of your assets.”. Umesh Mohanan, ED &amp; CEO, of Indel Money, cautions that one should have a sufficient quantity of gold to get the loan amount one wants. "According to the current RBI rules, the loan applicant/borrower can draw up to 75% of the total market value of the collateral/gold jewellery. So, always carry a sufficient quantity of gold based on one’s loan requirement. “The most important thing is that the valuation of the gold depends on the purity of the gold. If the borrower pledges gold with higher purity, such as 24 carats or 22 carats, he will get the maximum loan amount," he adds.

The repo rate, currently at 6.50%, has remained steady since the RBI adopted a cautious stance to balance inflation control and economic growth. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), headed by RBI Governor <keyword id="19913110" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shaktikanta-Das" source="keywords">Shaktikanta Das</keyword>, is expected to weigh key factors like inflationary trends, global economic uncertainties, and domestic growth prospects. RBI's monetary policy committee meeting begins today, announcement on October 9

This move is expected to impact the capital buffers of these banks. According to analysts, these banks would be most impacted by the move as their capital ratios would be affected by 30-85 basis points. For banks the first line of defense against bad loans is CET Tier 1 capital or Common Equity Tier 1 capital (CET1), which is the highest quality of regulatory capital, as it absorbs losses immediately when they occur. According to Motilal Oswal Financial Services, the CET 1 impact would be maximum for RBL/HDFC Bank/ICICI Bank at 84 basis points/72 basis points/64 basis points. Among non banks, SBI Cards would be the most vulnerable with a 416bp impact on capital ratios. Capital buffers will have to be further strengthened by banks if they want to lend to consumers for unsecured loans. If a bank had to set aside say ₹20 for loans, it will now have to set aside 25% more for every unsecured loan it issues. Not just this the banks will have to set aside more capital if they want to lend to shadow banks or non banking financial institutions as well. When cost of capital increases, so will lending rates. In the years after the pandemic broke, unsecured personal loans to retail borrowers have been on a steady rise. Not just banks but even non banks have been merrily issuing such loans to borrowers, and in many cases these borrowers have multiple such loans used for consumption. From 12-14% these loans are now growing at 30% rate. The central bank has cracked down on some non banks for not adhering to norms while underwriting such small ticket loans. The red flags have been flying high for a while now. According to proprietary research done by UBS, borrowers with more than five personal loans rose from 1% in 2018 to 7.7% in March 2023. New disbursement of personal loans to borrowers with weaker credit profiles accounted for 22% of disbursements. Of all banks, UBS was of the view that state-owned banks and non banking financial companies had a much higher share of weak borrowers compared to private banks. Analysts believe that pressure on net interest margins and higher credit costs to impact earnings of banks and shadow banks over FY24 and FY25. Paytm, a fintech company, has recently built a large loan portfolio which is mostly comprised of personal loans. With the <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> cracking down on these loans, the loan growth will be impacted for Paytm too. Deepak Shenoy, CEO of Capital Mind, took to social media to explain the impact, “See how it affects SBI cards: SBI Cards had credit card receivables of ₹ 45,000 crore with 23% capital adequacy ratio (CAR). So ₹10,500 cr in capital (23% of ₹45Kcr). Increase risk weight to 125% means ₹45K cr=₹56K cr risk weighted assets.” Shenoy explains that if “SBI Cards wants to grow, and keep high CARs (min is 15% I think?) they’ll need to raise capital and dilute. Starting today, you will have to spend at least Rs 35,000 from your credit card in the previous quarter, in order to be able to get a complimentary access to domestic airport lounges in the next quarter. Earlier, this threshold was set at Rs 10,000. This will impact YES Marquee, YES SELECT, YES Reserv, YES First Preferred, YES Bank ELITE, YES BYOC, and YES Wellness Plus cards. <h2>HDFC Bank</h2>Starting August 1st, if you make rent, or education related payments via platforms like Cred and Paytm, you will have to pay a fee of upto 1% of the transaction, which will be a maximum of Rs 3,000. However, if you make the payment directly through your school or college's website, you will be able to save on this charge. Similarly, on all fuel expenses of over Rs 15,000, a 1% fee will be applied, which can be a maximum of Rs 3,000.

During this window, the users will be able to modify or reverse the transaction, if they haven’t transacted with the person before. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Increased transaction limit" comment="subhead" text="Increased transaction limit">Increased transaction limit</cmsannotation> To help users making large transactions to hospitals and educational institutions, the transaction limit for such institutions has been increased from the existing INR 1 lakh to INR 5 lakh. This will make it easier for those paying large amounts to such institutions to complete their payment. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="UPI ATMs" comment="subhead" text="UPI ATMs">UPI ATMs</cmsannotation> In a bid to make it easier for users to withdraw cash, NPCI in collaboration with Hitachi Payment Services has started rolling out UPI ATMs, which allow users to withdraw cash using UPI apps, without having to carry a debit card. UPI in 2024 – Five rule changes that you need to know

New Delhi, Shares of One97 Communications which owns <keyword id="19898109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm" source="keywords">Paytm</keyword> brand hit the upper circuit for the fourth consecutive session on Wednesday. The stock of the fintech major climbed 5 per cent each to Rs 395.25 and Rs 395.05 per piece -- its upper circuit limit -- on the <keyword id="19895774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bse" source="keywords">BSE</keyword> and NSE, respectively. In the morning session, the 30-share BSE Sensex gained 27.95 points or 0.04 per cent to 73,085.35, while Nifty of the NSE slipped 15.75 points to 22,181.20. The Paytm scrip has rebounded since Friday and gained more than 21 per cent from Thursday's closing level of Rs 325. The rally in shares of One97 Communication came amid reports that the Directorate of Enforcement (ED), which has been probing crisis-hit fintech company's arm <keyword id="20403330" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm-payments-bank-ltd" source="keywords">Paytm Payments Bank Ltd</keyword> (PPBL), has not found any breaches of the foreign exchange rules so far. However, the central agency has found certain lapses in Know-Your-Customer (KYC) norms as well as issues around generation of suspicious transaction report. Last week, ED had initiated a probe into overseas transactions by PPBL for allegedly flouting foreign exchange rules. Shares of One97 Communications surged 5 per cent on Tuesday, a day after hitting the upper circuit limit on Monday. On Friday, shares of Paytm rebounded after three consecutive days of fall amid the company coming under the regulatory scanner for various violations related to its payments bank business. One97 Communication stock has taken a beating on the exchanges this month after the <keyword id="19899810" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="keywords">Reserve Bank of India</keyword>'s (<keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword>) action against the company's arm PPBL. As per the January 31 order, the RBI asked PPBL to stop further deposits, credit transactions, or top-ups in any customer accounts, prepaid instruments, wallets, FASTags, and National Common Mobility Cards, after February 29. Later, the central bank extended the deadline till March 15. One97 Communications holds a 49 per cent stake in PPBL but classifies it as an associate of the company and not as a subsidiary.

At ₹395, Paytm shares hit upper circuit for fourth straight session

The government has waived the requirement for clinical trials of certain categories of drugs in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> if they are approved in the <keyword id="19899478" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US" source="keywords">US</keyword>, the <keyword id="19922618" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UK" source="keywords">UK</keyword>, Japan, Australia, Canada and the European Union. The waiver only covers five categories -- orphan drugs for rare diseases, gene and cellular therapy products, <keyword id="22559447" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-drugs" source="keywords">new drugs</keyword> used in pandemic situations, new drugs used for special defence purposes and new drugs having significant therapeutic advances over the current standard care. This waiver would ensure expeditious availability of the latest medicines for treating diseases like cancers, rare diseases like Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMA), and autoimmune conditions in India. "As per Rule 101 of New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules, 2019, the Central Licensing Authority, with the approval of the Central Government, may specify, by an order, the name of the countries, from time to time, for considering waiver of local clinical trial for approval of new drugs under Chapter X and for grant of permission for conduct of clinical trial under Chapter V of the said rules," the Drugs Controller General of India (<keyword id="20559042" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="DGCI" source="keywords">DGCI</keyword>) said in an order issued on August 7. "In exercise of the powers conferred under Rule 101 of the said rules with the approval of the Central Government, the countries namely USA, UK, Japan, Australia, Canada and EU are hereby specified for following categories of new drugs," it said. Presently, several medicines already approved by other regulatory authorities in the US, the UK and the EU are not immediately available for Indian patients because of certain regulatory requirements under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and rules made thereunder. These include the requirement of conducting a local clinical trial and generating safety and efficacy data before marketing authorisation in India, an official explained. However, Rule 101 of the New Drugs and Clinical Trials, 2019, allows the DCGI to specify certain countries for considering waiver of local clinical trials for approval of new drugs. "The advantages of operationalising this rule are that the latest medicines to treat diseases like cancers, rare diseases like SMA and DMA, and autoimmune conditions will become available expeditiously in India. "Presently, the delay in launching a new or novel medicine in India is anywhere between 5-20 years when compared to western markets. With the waiver of Rule 101, the scope of parallel launches of medicines in India along with the West will be opened up," the official explained. Besides, there will be a considerable reduction in the cost of various advanced medicines. Also, there will be a substantial reduction in the public procurement costs of the central and state governments under various schemes like the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) and Ayushman Bharat. Another advantage is that the resources which would have gone into approving the Indian clinical trials could now be utilised productively elsewhere, the official said. The costs of conducting local clinical trials will be reduced for pharmaceutical firms, therefore passing on these savings to patients. This is especially true for cases of rare diseases where firms have logistical difficulties in finding participants. The change will promote further research in these areas as there will be access to patient data in the Indian context much earlier, ultimately promoting indigenous innovation and shift from volume to value, the government's mission for the pharmaceutical industry, the official said. Govt waives clinical trial requirement for several drugs approved in select countries

New Delhi, Shares of Paytm's parent company One97 Communications tanked 10 per cent on Wednesday after reports claimed that a preliminary inquiry has been started against subsidiary <keyword id="20403330" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm-payments-bank-ltd" source="keywords">Paytm Payments Bank Ltd</keyword> for alleged <keyword id="19940710" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="fema" source="keywords">FEMA</keyword> violations. Falling for the second straight day, Paytm shares dived 10 per cent to settle at the lower circuit limit of Rs 342.15 apiece on the NSE. On the <keyword id="19895774" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bse" source="keywords">BSE</keyword>, shares of the crisis-hit fintech company tumbled 9.99 per cent to close at Rs 342.35 per piece. The stock also hit its 52-week low on both BSE and NSE. As per the market reports, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated an preliminary inquiry against Paytm Payments Bank Ltd, under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). While announcing the action against PPBL, RBI had said the direction follows persistent non-compliances and continued material supervisory concerns. Regarding the action taken against PPBL, RBI Governor <keyword id="19913110" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shaktikanta-das" source="keywords">Shaktikanta Das</keyword> on Monday said, it is not against any fintech but its prime objective is to protect the interest of customers and depositors. The directives against any regulated entities are taken whenever it finds that they don't take any action even after they are told to comply with the regulations, Das added. In a major action against PPBL, the central bank, on January 31, directed it to stop accepting deposits or top-ups in any customer accounts, wallets, FASTags, and other instruments after February 29. One97 Communications holds a 49 per cent stake in PPBL but classifies it as an associate of the company and not as a subsidiary.

<ul><li>Reserve Bank of India’s (<keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword>) deputy governor M Rajeshwar Rao on Friday outlined several measures in the central bank’s revamped <keyword id="113684" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microfinance" source="Orion">microfinance</keyword> framework to safeguard customers. </li><li>RBI had announced a revamped regulatory framework for <keyword id="164768" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Microfinance-Institutions" source="Orion">microfinance institutions</keyword> in March this year. </li><li>From transparent pricing of loans to preventing intimidation of borrowers, here are the key aspects of the revamped guidelines for microfinance institutions. </li></ul>Customer protection is the ‘guiding light’ of the central bank’s revamped microfinance regulations that came into effect in April, Reserve Bank of India’s deputy governor M Rajeshwar Rao said on Friday. Rao said that with the new regulations the RBI has moved from a rule-based approach to a principle-based one in order to expand the availability of credit to the last mile, while improving the transparency and competition to foster a healthy environment. In his keynote address at the India Microfinance Review organised by industry body MFIN, the deputy governor said the measures were intended to ensure customer protection, which was the “guiding light while revamping the regulatory regime for the microfinance sector”. RBI’s revamped regulatory framework for microfinance institutions also relaxed norms for household income and repayment criteria to address the growing needs of borrowers. For instance, the limit on maximum annual household income to avail credit from microfinance institutions was ₹1.25 lakh in rural areas, while in urban and semi-urban areas it was ₹2 lakh. This has now been increased to ₹3 lakh for all the three areas. Effective interest rate includes the impact of compounding, showing exactly how much a borrower is paying in the form of interest on a loan. Rao said that this measure would not only help the borrower understand the total cost of a loan, but also help in comparing the cost amongst lenders to choose the best option. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Policies for conduct of employees" comment="subhead" text="Policies for conduct of employees">Policies for conduct of employees</cmsannotation> Rao also underlined that the boards of microfinance institutions should approve policies for the conduct of employees, including their recruitment, training and conduct. The guidelines also require the boards of these institutions to lay down policies for grievance redressal mechanisms so that customer complaints can be addressed appropriately. “While we acknowledge the rights of the lenders to recover overdue loans, I would like to make it clear in no uncertain terms that the Reserve Bank has zero tolerance for misconduct towards the borrowers,” Rao said. Customer protection 'guiding light' of revamped microfinance regulations, says RBI deputy governor

<ul><li>From October 1, <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword>’s new auto-debit rules will be effective after which banks will have to process an additional authentication step for all recurring transactions through debit cards, credit cards and UPI.</li><li>Under the new norms, users who have set automated recurring payments for utility bills, phone recharge, OTT platforms etc., through above payment methods will receive notification from the bank every time before auto-transaction to approve or cancel payment.</li><li>The new norm looks to ensure secure and safe payments by inserting checkpoints before every auto transaction made.</li></ul>Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) new norms for auto-debit transactions will come into effect from today, October 1, according to which banks are required to notify users or rather take their confirmation before every auto generated transaction. This rule goes for those using debit/credit cards, wallets and unified payments interface (UPI) for transactions. Those who have e-mandated their recurring payments through net banking mode for paying either utility bills, phone recharge, over-the-top (OTT) will continue to be the same. Apart from these, systematic investment plan (SIP) transactions will also not be impacted. This is because most SIP transactions happen through the national automated clearing house (NACH) mandate, which is executed directly by the bank. So, investors who have their ongoing investment through apps like Zerodha, Upstox, Groww, Motilal Oswal, Angel Broking and other broking firms aka investment platforms need not worry about their SIP payments. “Zerodha uses an e-mandate facility on the NPCI NACH platform to allow its clients to set up auto-debits. Since the auto-debit instruction is authorised by the client using their bank account, the new RBI rules do not affect this channel. All existing and new auto-debit instructions will be carried out in the same mode as before,” said a spokesperson at Zerodha. An e-mandate is a standing instruction initiated by the RBI and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that allows businesses to collect recurring payments of up to ₹5,000. For recurring payments above Rs 5,000, banks will require an additional link for authentication as they are not eligible for e-mandate based recurring transactions. This is also because SEBI doesn’t allow stock brokerage firms to accept debit or credit cards from users to make transactions through the investment platform. Basically, the new <a href="https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/NotificationUser.aspx?Id=11668">guidelines </a>require users to opt for an e-mandate facility through a one-time registration process, which can only be successful once the user validates using a one-time password (OTP), besides entering their bank/card/UPI details. The <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword>'s decision to tighten norms for unsecured <keyword id="35520" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="personal-loans" source="Orion">personal loans</keyword> is credit positive because lenders will need to allocate higher capital for such loans, thus improving their loss-absorbing buffers, <keyword id="6462970" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="moodys" source="Orion">Moody's</keyword> Investors Service said on Monday. The Reserve Bank last week raised risk weights on unsecured retail loans, credit cards and lending to non-banking finance companies (NBFCs) by 25 percentage points. Moody's said <keyword id="586043" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="unsecured-loans" source="Orion">unsecured loans</keyword> have been growing rapidly in the past few years, exposing financial institutions to a potential spike in credit costs in case of sudden economic or interest rate shocks. "The tightening of underwriting norms through higher risk-weighted assets is credit positive because lenders will need to allocate higher capitals for such loans improving their loss-absorbing buffers and may dampen their growth appetite," Moody's said in a statement. It said that over the past few years, India's unsecured lending segment has become very competitive, with banks, NBFCs and financial technology (fintech) companies, including several new entrants, aggressively growing loans in this category. In the past two years, personal loans grew around 24 per cent and credit card loans rose 28 per cent on an average compared with the overall banking sector's credit growth of around 15 per cent, Moody's said. "We expect banks would be able to absorb higher risk weights on their capital because the overall banking sector's exposure to unsecured retail credit is small at around 10 per cent of loans as of September 2023 and the sector's overall capitalization is at historically high levels with a Common Equity Tier 1 ratio of 13.9 per cent as of March 2023," Moody's said. However, the impact of the new underwriting rules could vary among individual lenders depending on their exposure to unsecured loans, it added. Last week, US-based S&amp;P Global Ratings had said that the RBI's decision to tighten norms for unsecured consumer credit is likely to hit banks' capital adequacy by 60 basis points. The move could lead to higher lending rates, lower credit growth and increase the need for capital raising among weak lenders, it added.
