Another gas leakage from <keyword id="9178866" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="lg-polymers">LG Polymers</keyword> in <keyword id="60510" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Visakhapatnam">Visakhapatnam</keyword> late Thursday triggered panic in areas near the plant and forced people to move to safe places. Fumes were seen billowing out of the chemical plant, where the gas leakage in the early hours of the day claimed 11 lives and affected over 300 others. People from <keyword id="9180073" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="gopalpatnam">Gopalpatnam</keyword>, Simhachalam and Pinagadi areas, which are four km away from the plant, were seen moving to safe places. The gas smell sent panic in certain areas late Thursday night. Many people rushed out of their houses and were seen heading to safer places by their vehicles. <keyword id="58433" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="local">Local</keyword> police at few places advised people to move to safe places as a precautionary measure. Officials, however, said the gas emission was continuing since the major leakage around 3.45 a.m. on Thursday. Visakhapatnam Police Commissioner <keyword id="1294185" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="R-K-Meena">R K Meena</keyword> said there was no need for panic. "Efforts are going on to neutralize the gas leak. There is no danger," he said. The police commissioner hoped that the work to plug the emissions will be completed in a couple of hours. About 12,000 people from RR Venkatapuram and four other villages were evacuated after the leakage early Thursday. Visakhapatnam District Fire Officer Sandeep Anand said 10 fire engines and two foam fighters were kept ready in the plant. He said some ambulances were also on standby as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, a cargo flight carrying a team of experts and PTBC inhibitor, an antidote for <keyword id="1608382" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Styrene">styrene</keyword>, landed in Visakhapatnam late Thursday. The sources said that at least a dozen MLAs said to be from Pilot's camp are also staying put in NCR-Delhi region at various places. Pilot had come to Delhi on Saturday. According to the sources, MLA P.R. Meena, considered to be a member from the Pilot group, had sought to meet Sonia Gandhi to apprise her of the "step-motherly treatment given to them by the <keyword id="165679" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ashok-Gehlot-government">Ashok Gehlot government</keyword> in Rajasthan". Meanwhile, Chief Minister Gehlot called a meeting of his Ministers at his official residence in Jaipur late Saturday and asked all party MLAs to give a letter of support to him. Senior ministers have been roped in this regard. However, ministers from the Pilot camp did not attend this meeting. Gehlot, sources said, has spoken with Sonia Gandhi, Rajasthan party affairs incharge Avinash Pandey, and Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal to apprise them of developments in his state.

Visakhapatnam Commissioner of Police R K Meena told that LG Polymers Managing Director and CEO Sunkey Jeong, Technical Director D S Kim and Operations Additional Director P Purnachandra Mohan Rao were arrested, along with nine other staffers of the firm. "Investigation disclosed that the incident at M6 styrene storage tank took place due to the negligence of these persons, who also have knowledge that their acts were likely to cause death," the Commissioner of Police said. He said the case was still under investigation as reports from various departments have to be obtained and witnesses examined. The Gopalapatnam police under Visakhapatnam Police Commissionerate registered a case on May 7 against LG Polymers at R R Venkatapuram, under various IPC Sections, including 278 (making atmosphere noxious to health). Exactly two months later, the arrests were made. The styrene vapour leak incident left 12 people dead and 585 sick on May 7 at R R Venkatapuram and surrounding villages near Visakhapatnam. The High Powered Committee, appointed by the state government to probe the vapour leak, submitted its report to Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Monday, blaming multiple inadequacies on the part of LG and slackness of management over poor safety protocols and total breakdown of the emergency response procedures in the plant that resulted in the grave tragedy. It also pointed out the oversight on part of different government departments, primarily the Directorate of Factories, that contributed to the tragedy. Based on the HPC report, the Pollution Control Board placed its Environmental Engineers P Prasada Rao (regional office) and R Lakshmi Narayana (zonal office) under suspension for gross negligence in allowing the operation and expansion of LG Polymers without environmental clearance. The Director of Factories suspended Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories K B S Prasad over his lapses and failures in enforcement of Factories Act and other rules in LG Polymers. With Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister <keyword id="71345" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sachin-Pilot">Sachin Pilot</keyword> in Delhi to meet Congress high command and his camp claiming support of 25 members of legislative assembly (MLA), the Congress is trying to pacify factions led by him and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to save itself more embarrassment as well as the party's government in the state, sources said on Sunday. The MLAs from the Pilot camp are said to be lodged at different places, with about a dozen at ITC Grand in Gurugram, and a few others are at ITC Maurya in Delhi. Meanwhile, Sachin Pilot has gone incommunicado since he is not taking phone calls from any Congress leader, including his friends in the party. Sources said he spoke with Congress Treasurer Ahmed Patel late Saturday night, adding that the Congress was trying to pacify both the camps to save the party from embarrassment. On the other hand, the Gehlot camp claims that the Chief Minister has the support of 103 MLAs and his government the required numbers in the state Assembly.
