The funds are flowing left, right and centre. The next one in line to raise funds is <keyword id="6381424" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Quikr">Quikr</keyword>, one of India’s top classified websites, who has managed to raise $60 million. The funds come from Tiger Global Management, a global investment firm. Quikr’s current investors include <keyword id="6402698" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Warburg-Pincus">Warburg Pincus</keyword>, <keyword id="215055" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="eBay-Inc-">Ebay Inc.</keyword> and <keyword id="833690" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nokia-Growth-Partners">Nokia Growth Partners</keyword>.

Quikr Has Managed To Raise $60 Million For Future Growth And Projects

<keyword id="6381424" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Quikr">Quikr</keyword>, which was for months resisting a merger in its property vehicle, has finally bought the property search website CommonFloor. The acquisition was announced on Thursday; however, the amount of the deal is not announced as of now. The deal would give CommonFloor access to the vast customer base of the online classifieds firm. 
 
Quikr will now be valued at about $1.5 billion (about Rs 10,000 crore) based on the share-swap ratio, entering it into the rarefied club of Indian Unicorns, a term used for companies worth at least a billion dollars. 
 The acquisition has happened just four months after Quikr launched its own property search website <keyword id="2796396" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Quikrhomes">QuikrHomes</keyword>. 
 
As per ET’s sources, CommonFloor, which was valued at about $160 million in its last funding round, dropped down to $100-120 million for this deal. 
 
Both Quikr and CommonFloor have the New York-based investment firm Tiger Global Management as an investor. 
 
Even after the merger, both brands will operate independently and would benefit from each other 
 
"(This) will give CommonFloor.com access to Quikr's 30 million consumers and harness the potential of the cross category nature of the platform, while Quikr-Homes will benefit from CommonFloor's structured data and domain expertise," read the Quikr statement. 
 
CommonFloor, which was founded in 2008, is owned by maxHeap Technologies, and is backed by venture capital firm Accel Partners and Google Capital along with Tiger Global Management.

Quikr now owns this real estate portal

With Rs 250 crores waiting to be invested, <keyword id="6381424" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Quikr">Quikr</keyword> is surely taking the stakes higher in India's home services market. The Bengaluru-based mobile and online classifieds company has plans in place, to become the largest player in the space which has competitors like against Amazon-backed Housejoy, UrbanClap and Sulekha. 
 
The money would be spent on product development, including technology and building in-house supply. Not to forget, marketing campaigns and strategic investments in start-ups are also in the pipeline. 
 
"We have grown this business organically till now as we already have a lot of transacting users, so we don't need to spend as much on customer acquisition," PD Sundar, who leads QuikrServices, told ET. A benefit that Quikr has over its competitors comes in the form of other verticals that it owns. For example, a house rented through QuikrHomes could get synced services from QuikrServices on the same platform. 
 
Over the past two years, Quikr has raised $300 million and has Tiger Global, Matrix Partners, Warburg Pincus and Kinnevik as major shareholders.

It’s Quikr vs everyone else in home services market!

A year after <keyword id="6354553" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="real-estate">real estate</keyword> portal <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=CommonFloor+&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">CommonFloor </a>was acquired by online classifieds firm <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Quikr&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Quikr</a> for $200 million, the three co-founders- Sumit Jain, Vikas Malpani and Lalit Mangal have quit the company. 
 <keyword id="6381425" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="COMMONFLOOR">CommonFloor</keyword> was founded in 2007 and over the past year, has seen a series of employee layoffs. Currently, it is unclear if the three cofounders are headed to separate companies or are looking at a new business opportunity together.

After the acquisition, CommonFloor continued to work as an individual brand under <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=QuikrHomes&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">QuikrHomes</a> and has nearly 1,000 employees working for it at the time of the acquisition. At present, only a handful remains in the company.

A year after Quikr acquisition, CommonFloor founders quit

New Delhi, July 10 (IANS) Rate of applications per job has now increased by 48 per cent in India compared to average applications per job in the pre-Covid period, said a report by online hiring platform QuikrJobs on Friday. The situation is worse in metro cities as QuikrJobs saw greater increase in the rate of applications per job in these areas, compared to job applications in non-metro areas, according to the report titled "Impact of Covid-19 on the Blue-Collar Industry in India". There was a significant increase in applications per job as compared to pre-Covid for roles like data entry/back office (115 per cent), delivery executives (139 per cent), driver (122 per cent), teacher (108 per cent), marketing (179 per cent) and sales (187 per cent), said the report. Owing to international flight cancellations and restriction on entry/exit of people by many countries, "Work Abroad" jobs saw a 65 per cent dip in applications from job-seekers. This report analysed job listings by recruiters and job applications by job-seekers as seen on QuikrJobs platform from January till March 15 as pre-Covid period and March 16 till the end of May 2020 as Covid lockdown period. The data showed that availability of blue-collar workforce has increased significantly as compared to availability of jobs. QuikrJobs witnessed a dip in both jobs and applicants during lockdown, especially in April. However, the overall applications for blue-collar job roles saw a 108 per cent growth in applications and 36 per cent increase in the availability of jobs in May as compared to April. Roles that can be classified as "Work from Home" is currently the most preferred option for many job-seekers saw an increase in the salary offered, said the report. --IANS gb/vd

Applications per job up 48% amid Covid-19 in India: Report

<keyword id="6356826" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="environment">Environment</keyword> Minister of India today said popular websites like <keyword id="6381424" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Quikr">Quikr</keyword>, <keyword id="6360657" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="OLX">Olx</keyword>, Ebay, Amazon and Youtube are involved in trade of rare animals and their body parts. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave said online smuggling of rare animals and their parts are being monitored by the state and central governments as part of combating cyber crime. He also said "Several websites are seen advertising sale of rare animals and their parts". 
 He furnished a list of 106 such websites collated by the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB). The 106 websites include prominent names like quikr.com, olx.in, alibaba.com, eBay.com, youtube.com, amazon.com, shopping.rediff.com, petsmart.com and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">snapdeal</keyword>.com. Dave said several steps have been taken to prevent such illegal activities which include utilising services of cyber crime specialists on contractual basis to carry out regular cyber patrolling to detect posts and offers on such portals. He said if any such offer is detected, details are retrieved of the suspect and information is passed on to relevant enforcement agencies for legal action. 
 
A meeting of representatives from online trade portals was convened in May this year to discuss issues pertaining to online wildlife trade, sensitise them about it and discuss modalities to assist WCCB in case of such detections. Dave said during training and sensitisation programmes conducted by WCCB, the issue of illegal online wildlife trade is being highlighted so that officials involved in the enforcement are abreast of such trends. A wildlife body had recently alleged that a prominent website was selling wildlife specimens, including sea horses and alligator heads, protected under the country's laws. 
 
Wildlife SOS had claimed the website was offering an array of wildlife trophies, including alligator heads, preserved snakes, butterflies, starfish, rare beetles and seahorses, besides hunting manuals and devices.

The seller also offers a six-month seller warranty on models including the iPhone 6s 16 GB model for Rs 69,999 and the 64 GB variant for Rs 84,999. These are backed by an eBay guarantee. 
 
In Olx, a seller is offering <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=iphone+6S">iPhone 6S 64 GB</a> for for Rs 75,000 and can ship it within a day, while one on Quikr.com has put a 65,000 tag for the 16 GB variant of iPhone 6s Plus. 
iPhone 6S will be available in Indian retail stores on the intervening night of October 15 and 16. While Apple is yet to announce the price for India, people in the loop believe, the 16 GB iPhone 6s will be priced at Rs 55,000-56,000 and the iPhone 6s Plus 16 GB model will be sold for Rs 65,000-66,000. 
 
Apple has confirmed, the phones sold on various websites are imported and won't have guarantees. They said buyers would be risking paying all the money upfront with no guarantee of delivery. 
 
Quikr said it has a comprehensive policy on its website that outlines the types of products for which listing or posting of classifieds or information is prohibited. "We also spend time educating buyers about what to check before buying the product listed by the seller," Atul Tewari, COO at Quikr, said in an email response to The Economic Times. 
 
An eBay India spokesperson clarified that the seller warranty was not akin to manufacturer warranty.

Overpriced  and warranty-less-Apple’s iPhone 6S is up for grabs online

At a time when online fashion retailer <keyword id="319719" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Myntra">Myntra</keyword> is planning to shut down its website and concentrate only on mobile app mode of operations, the big question of the hour is : Would online retailers do away with their websites and focus on mobile-app only? 
 
After speaking to half-a-dozen startups, The Economic Times found that the new entrants plan to channel efforts and marketing dollars entirely on their mobile applications. 
 Among the ones ET spoke to are local services startups Zopper, Doormint and LocalOye; online-first restaurants Holachef and Spoonjoy; online dating startup Truly-Madly; and on-demand grocery delivery firm <keyword id="2809732" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="PepperTap">PepperTap</keyword>. 
 
Large eCommerce firms such as Flipkart, Snapdeal, Quikr, Ola and Myntra get 70-80% of their traffic from mobile devices, a key factor influencing Internet companies and startups to consider being app-only platforms, the ET news report confirms. Flipkart and its fashion affiliate Myntra began the trend by shutting their mobile websites and relying instead on their apps to encourage repeated use and to push targeted discounts and notifications. 
 Yet exception is there to prove the rule. Quikr is still not keen on shutting down web operation. "Mobile is clearly the most important channel for us, but for our business, which has a lot of customers in rural India, the browser is important as well," founder and CEO <keyword id="1063538" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pranay-Chulet">Pranay Chulet</keyword> told the financial daily. 
 
India's smartphone market grew 54% to 140 million devices last year, and is expected to reach 651 million in four years and be the largest mobile-first Internet market, according to Cisco. 
 
As a reflection of this market growth, Ola, India's largest taxi-hailing company, saw cab bookings through its mobile app double in the past 12 months. In contrast, its "website as a source of bookings has been negligible, as 80% of the bookings come through the app and around 20% through the call centre", Anand Subramanian, director of marketing communication at Ola, which registered more than 2 lakh rides a day in January told the ET.

A hyperlocal services website from Facebook aims to give tough competition to Quikr and UrbanClap

Lalbhais is the most rooted business family in Ahmedabad. <keyword id="192475" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kulin-Lalbhai">Kulin Lalbhai</keyword>, who belongs to the family, had a tough time when he decided to move to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Bengaluru+">Bengaluru </a>for his new venture. He had to go through a series of disapprovals, but the 29-year-old finally moved out with his wife and daughter. 
 Many thought he made this move because he split up with the family, but Kulin disagrees. He says, “It's nothing like that. My family is very dear to me I'm still in Ahmedabad at least once a month. But I realised I need to be in <keyword id="6354321" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bengaluru">Bengaluru</keyword> 90% of the time for this venture. It's a sacrifice for all of us." 
 
He told Economic Times that how his family business always had a major presence in Bengaluru, but the family never felt the need of having someone based over there. 
 The garment brand’s major manufacturing has been done in Bengaluru and the CEO of <keyword id="589879" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arvind-Lifestyle">Arvind Lifestyle</keyword> has traditionally operated from the city. But in its expansion plan, the another creation, Arvind Internet has now started creating an ‘omni-channel’ that combines the group's physical retail presence with eCommerce and the leadership needs here are very different from the garment business. 
 
"The tech business is driven by entrepreneurial energy," says Kulin. 
 
"It's not easy attracting people, putting together a team. You need to be there yourself, to lead them," he added. 
 
It’s not just about Lalbhais, over the past couple of years, most of the ambitious and young enthusiasts have shifted their base to the city.

Shah has lived in Mumbai all his life. "My operations were in Bengaluru anyway and I was spending 60% of my time there. Any change is hard, but I think this change will be good for me. When you're creating a disruptive business, you're better off being away from the old companies," Shah says. 
 
"You have to be here if you need tech talent," says Pranay Chulet, founder of Quikr. "In Mumbai, we could find marketing people, but we were not able to hire enough engineers. Since I've moved to Bengaluru, I've plugged into the local ecosystem and created a team of 200 engineers." <keyword id="1417134" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shishir-Baijal">Shishir Baijal</keyword>, MD Knight Frank India estimates that the cost of housing here is half that of Mumbai and commercial space is 40% cheaper. 
 
While Quikr found it hard to attract engineers from Bengaluru to Mumbai, it had no problem at all persuading its existing tech team to move to Bengaluru. Maybe it's the opportunity to work with like-minded people that are reimagining business or maybe it's the weather, but young engineers are all too happy to move to Bengaluru. 
 The city's ecosystem includes venture capitalists (VCs), startup accelerators, social impact funds and an urban market that serves as an experimentation lab. When <keyword id="250677" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vishal-Bali">Vishal Bali</keyword> quit his job as the CEO of <keyword id="735105" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fortis-Healthcare-International">Fortis Healthcare International</keyword> in Singapore to turn entrepreneur last year, he decided to locate his company, Medwell Ventures, in Bengaluru. He has since bought Nightingales, a local home healthcare company, and is expanding it pan-India. 
 
"Technology will play a major role in healthcare in the future, which is why many new healthcare start-ups are in Bengaluru," he says. "The city is also good for proof of concept. We were able to prove our idea works in Bengaluru. We couldn't have done this if we started in a city like Mumbai, where the cost of learning is high."
