Dubai-based <keyword id="81852" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Emirates-airline">Emirates Airline</keyword> is not looking to own stake in Australian airline <keyword id="141575" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Qantas">Qantas</keyword>, in spite of the government’s move to relax foreign ownership restrictions on the carrier, a report says. 
 
Canberra wants to amend ownership rules to facilitate more foreign investment, which will help Qantas raise some much-needed capital. But the Emirates chairman, <keyword id="832407" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sheikh-Ahmed-bin-Saeed-Al-Maktoum">Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum</keyword>, said his company had no plans to buy stake. 
 
"As we stated when the partnership began, neither airline is looking to take equity stake in the other," Sheikh Ahmed told the Australian Financial Review. 
 In December 2013, Emirates president <keyword id="58277" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tim-Clark">Tim Clark</keyword> had also ruled out extending a lifeline to the Australian carrier Qantas. 
 
As per the provisions of the partnership, both carriers can combine operations for an initial period of five years. It has also opened up Qantas' profitable domestic network of more than 50 destinations to Emirates. 
 
Qantas had earlier sought government’s help after incurring a loss of $210 million in six months. 
 
"We are facing some of the toughest conditions Qantas has ever seen. Australia has been hit by a giant wave of international airline capacity, with 46% increase in competitor capacity since 2009 – more than double the global increase of 21% over the same period," said Alan Joyce, chief executive of Qantas. 
 Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott agreed to amend the <keyword id="1943416" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Qantas-Sale-Act">Qantas Sale Act</keyword>, which restricts foreign ownership in the airline to not more than 49%. The bill was passed by the lower house of the parliament but it is facing hurdles in the upper house.

Throughout the two-and-a-half-minute video, Rehman is understanding about the situation."At least I got to enjoy it for a brief second," Rehman says in the video. "The staff are very apologetic. Can't really knock 'em. What can you do?""We know this would have been disappointing for Mr. Rehman and we have apologized for the disruption caused to his journey," a Qantas spokesperson said in a statement sent to BI. "Safety is always our main priority and unfortunately a minor technical issue meant that this seat had to be kept vacant."<h2>The traveler moved to economy, where he still enjoyed business-class perks like dining</h2>At the end of August, Rehman won the top 1 percent sales award at Cisco, the technology company where he works.The prize was an all-expense-paid trip to Hawaii in business class, and he got to bring one guest. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Two New Jersey companies falsely marketed a pesticide as a disinfectant against COVID-19, the EPA said.</li><li>Zoono USA and Zoono Holdings were collectively fined $325,000.</li></ul>Two New Jersey companies have been fined $325,000 for selling a pesticide they marketed as a weapon against COVID-19, the Environmental Protection Agency <a href="https://www.epa.gov/newsreleases/epa-takes-enforcement-action-against-two-new-jersey-companies-violations-related">said</a> Thursday.The EPA said that Zoono USA and Zoono Holdings had used "false and misleading claims" about the effectiveness of Zoono Microbe Shield, a registered pesticide, and its suitability for use as a sanitizer or disinfectant against viruses, "including against the virus that causes COVID-19."The sprays were sold on websites including Amazon and bought by both individuals and institutions, including community centers, per the EPA. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/united-airlines-robot-disinfect-planes-coronavirus-2020-9">United Airlines</a> even used the spray as a coating for its plane cabins, in conjunction with other cleaning measures including electrostatic disinfection. Zoono <a href="https://zoono.com/wp-content/uploads/Zoono-2020-Annual-Report.pdf">says</a> it has also supplied Australia's flag carrier Qantas Airlines.The EPA said the two companies had violated federal laws because they sold the product using public-health claims "that substantially differed" from those approved during the product's EPA registration, which had included its effectiveness against fungi, mold, and bacteria that cause odors, staining, or discoloration."Approved uses allowed on Zoono Microbe Shield labeling do not include use as a disinfectant or sanitizer or any public health claims," the EPA said.The EPA has reached settlements with the two companies: Zoono USA will pay a $205,000 civil penalty and Zoono Holdings will pay $120,000. The companies have taken actions to come into compliance with the Federal Insecticide Fungicide and Rodenticide Act, the EPA added.Zoono USA and Zoono Holdings are owned by the New Zealand company Zoono Group. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/22/us/new-jersey-epa-pesticide-fine.html">The New York Times reported</a> that the two New Jersey companies share the same address.A Zoono Holdings spokesperson told The Times that the company had bought the US distribution rights for Zoono products in late 2021 from Zoono USA and was "unaware at that time of any misleading claims being made by the distributor or sub distributors.""Zoono Holdings takes regulatory responsibilities very seriously and as soon as Zoono Holdings received notification from the E.P.A. that in market advertising claims were under investigation, Zoono Holdings halted all in market sales and worked diligently to remove any misleading claims from the market," the spokesperson told the publication.They added that the company had a "zero-tolerance approach to regulatory noncompliance."<a href="https://zoonousa.com/collections/surface/products/microbe-shield-surface-sanitiser">Zoona USA's website</a> lists the product as an antimicrobial surface protectant and doesn't describe it as a sanitizer or disinfectant or as an effective product against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The airline has been battling record fuel costs and fierce competition from subsidized rivals and in December said 1,000 jobs would go while warning it faced a half-year loss of up to Aus$300 million.
Its interim result is due on Thursday and the Sydney Daily Telegraph, citing a Qantas source, said the job losses would be much worse as the airline restructures its finances to convince the government it deserves a debt guarantee.
As well as sacking 5,000 staff, the newspaper said Qantas may sell some of its terminals, while The Australian reported it would accelerate the retirement of older planes and defer new orders.
The airline refused to go into details.
"There is fresh speculation about what things we will or won't announce on Thursday as part of our half-year results. We are not in a position to comment on that speculation," the flag carrier said in a statement.
"We have said that we will be making some tough decisions in order to achieve $2 billion in cost savings over the next three years, which is a consequence of an unprecedented set of market conditions now facing Qantas."
- Unease over 'mass sackings' -
Transport Workers Union national secretary Tony Sheldon said Qantas must come clean on its restructuring plans with staff on edge over potential mass sackings.
"Another day, another rumor of massive job cuts and the sale of planes and terminals," he said.
"Each baggage handler, check-in staff and ramp worker generates a $205,000 return to Qantas above the cost of their employment. Sacking them is like a tradesman selling his tools to pay a one-off bill."
Qantas has said it faces "immense" challenges and has been lobbying the government to ease limits in foreign investment or provide state intervention to help shore up its bottom line.
Canberra has made clear there will be no taxpayer handouts but has flagged support for a relaxation of the Qantas Sale Act, which limits foreign ownership in the airline to 49 percent, or a possible debt facility.
Qantas chief Alan Joyce argues that the cap is hurting Qantas's ability to compete by restricting access to capital, particularly against domestic rival Virgin Australia, which is majority-owned by state-backed Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand and Etihad.
Transport Minister Warren Truss on Tuesday said the conservative government was drafting laws to allow Qantas to be majority foreign-controlled while allowing a single foreign shareholder to own more than 25 percent.
"The government is philosophically attracted to leveling the playing field," he said, although Labor and the Greens have vowed to block any legislation in the upper house Senate.
They are against allowing majority overseas ownership, but open to the government providing an assistance package.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the government accepted the carrier was having to compete with the "ball and chain" of the Qantas Act.
"But in the end Qantas do have to get their own house in order," he said.
Following the profit warning in December, Moody's and S&amp;P both downgraded Qantas' credit rating to "junk" status, increasing the cost of financing for the carrier and restricting access for investors that do not put their money in lower-rated companies.
The carrier pledged to press ahead with cost cutting regardless of whether the government decides to help.
"We've said that we must take steps to reduce our costs regardless of whether the federal government acts on the uneven playing field in the Australian aviation market," it said in the statement.
Qantas shares closed 0.40 percent lower at Aus$1.23.5.

Australia's Biggest Airline Is Slashing $1.8 Billion Off Its Budget

The results follow Qantas on Thursday announcing a Aus$235 million loss over the same six month period to December 31. In response, Qantas will axe 5,000 jobs and defer aircraft deliveries.
There was no similar drastic action by Virgin Australia, the country's second-biggest airline, despite a significant hit to its bottom line after a Aus$23 million profit in the same period last year.
Qantas is lobbying the government to provide a guarantee on its debt borrowings to help it survive, but Virgin Australia chief executive John Borghetti said this should not happen.
"Providing a financial facility to the detriment of the rest of the industry -- as I hope our government and opposition agree -- is wrong. Two wrongs don't make a right," he said.
"It is not our place to tell government what to do, but any government or opposition should think very carefully before it decides to pick winners in an industry."
Qantas complains that it is hindered by the Qantas Sales Act which limits foreign ownership in the carrier its ability to attract capital.
It claims Virgin has an advantage through its majority ownership by Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand and Etihad, bringing their substantial financial clout.
Borghetti said Virgin's disappointing interim result reflected "the tough trading conditions across the entire industry for the first half of financial year 2014".
"The Australian aviation market continues to be impacted by the significant capacity growth which occurred during the 2013 financial year, compounded by weak economic conditions and the inability to recover the cost of the carbon tax," he said.
The airline said the country's controversial tax -- a corporate levy on each tonne of carbon pollution from Australia's top emitters -- added Aus$27 million to its costs.
Its underlying pre-tax loss -- the airline's preferred measure of financial performance -- was Aus$49.7 million. While revenue jumped 6.4 percent to Aus$2.2 billion, costs increased 4.5 percent.
The airline declined to provide any full-year guidance.
