New Delhi [India], June 28 (ANI): Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Wednesday expressed happiness over the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Ranking in which <keyword id="17839046" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay" source="Denny">IIT Bombay</keyword> bagged 149 ranks and said that today <keyword id="17839044" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-universities" source="Denny">Indian universities</keyword> are world-class. This comes after the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai achieved a great milestone by coming into the world's top 150 universities in the latest edition of the QS World University Ranking released on Wednesday, an official statement of IIT Bombay said. QS Founder and CEO, Nunzio Quacquarelli also congratulated IIT Bombay for securing its highest rank ever and said that they've ranked 2,900 institutions for this year's ranking system and there are 45 Indian universities that are appearing in the rankings. Talking to ANI, Chandrasekhar said, "I am happy that 45 Indian universities have made it to the rankings in this year's <keyword id="17839045" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="QS-World-University-Rankings" source="Denny">QS World University Rankings</keyword>. In the last nine years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has transformed <keyword id="17839047" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="education-in-India" source="Denny">education in India</keyword>". "Indian universities are world-class. Now less Indians will have to travel abroad for better education. Indian education is now not just good, it is amongst the world's best," he added. The QS World University Rankings is an annual publication of university rankings that comprises the global overall and subject rankings. According to the official statement, IIT Bombay has been ranked 1st in India and has moved significantly up from 177th rank last year to 149th rank this year in the QS World University Rankings, with an overall score of 51.7 out of 100. It is for the first time ever since its participation that IIT Bombay has been ranked within the top 150 in QS rankings. Overall, the Institution improved its 2023 performance by 23 places. The Union Minister also said employer reputation or employer credibility with Indian Universities is at an all-time high. "PM Modi's vision of empowering our youth starts with education and universities being reformed. In Asia Indian universities are seen from an employer reputation point of view as the best," he said. This year for the first time 45 Indian Institutions got ranked in QS World University Ranking. The CEO of QS also congratulated 'Chandigarh University' for securing 780 ranks and becoming the top-performing Indian private university. "I'd also like to congratulate Chandigarh University as the top performing Indian private university that came in the 780," he said. "And we hope that our worldview rankings and QS rating systems and other initiatives will continue to carry that momentum forward as we see more Indian universities performing even better in the years to come," he added. The QS rankings assess universities on 11 parameters including academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper and paper per faculty and others. Located in Madhya Pradesh, IIT Indore is one of the eight new IITs established by the Indian government. It came into existence a decade ago under the mentorship of IIT Bombay. In 2016, it started functioning at its own campus. Among the BRICS nations, the institute ranks 97 and is known for its high research output among the Asian universities. It scored 94 points for papers per faculty metric and 64 points for citations per paper. The rankings for other IITs in the top 200 — Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee and Guwahati campuses — dropped as compared to last year. The elite IITs did not make it to the top 30. IIT Bombay, which is the top ranking Indian institution slipped by one spot to at 34 compared to its 2019 ranking. It ranks 21 in terms of employer reputation and 32 for academic reputation as per the list. On the other hand, IIT Delhi, which was ranked at 40th position last year dropped by three spots to 43. “The number of universities has nearly doubled, and the number of colleges has grown by 50%. None of the India’s top IITs feature in the list of top 30 Asian universities

This includes IIT Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur. </li></ul>Indian engineers are well known around the world. Now, its universities are being ranked high especially in the engineering and technology domain. According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject, India’s premier engineering institutions — Bombay and Delhi campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) — have been ranked in the top 50 universities for the very first time. IIT Delhi ranked 44th while IIT Bombay crawled up nine spots to rank 47th in the global list. Department-wise, IIT Bombay and Kharagpur rank at 41st and 66th for mineral and mining engineering and IIT Delhi stood at 49th for electrical and electronic engineering. "It is a significant achievement of our premiere engineering institutions, which has made India proud. This is the result of continuous efforts of our government to promote the environment of research and innovation in our educational institutions," Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' said. Overall, five Indian institutions ranked in the top 100 universities, compared to three last year. This includes IIT Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur. "This is the result of the various measures we have taken in the institute on boosting the research ecosystem on the campus, strengthening our connect with the external stakeholders, significantly enhanced internationalization efforts from the institute and various other measures initiated in the last three years," IIT Delhi director V Ramgopal Rao told news agency PTI. This comes as good news to the Indian universities that were striving to make a mark, globally. Nearly 20 universities were ranked in the top 200 in the <a href="https://www.qs.com/rankings-revealed-qs-wur-asia-2020/">QS World University Rankings: Asia 2020</a> this year. However, the IITs — Bombay, Delhi and Madras campuses — did not make it to the top 30. In Chemistry, 20 Indian universities have been ranked on the top, followed by computer science, physics, astronomy and biological sciences. IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi rank amongst world’s top 50 engineering colleges, as per the QS rankings

It's been edited for length and clarity.I was born in Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania, and lived in the Delaware Valley for 24 years. I grew up in the suburbs, and the idea of leaving the US and moving abroad never came up. That changed in 2006. I was enrolled in Temple University — a state-funded research university in my hometown — at the time. I ended up putting my studies on hold to pursue music and follow in my parents' footsteps. I went on tour with a band across the US for a year. There was something liberating about life on the road.In 2008, I returned to Temple to study economics. My time in college wasn't easy as I went back to school <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-crash-financial-crisis-economy-sofi-liz-young-investors-2023-3">following the global financial crisis</a>. Despite the challenges, I graduated summa cum laude from Temple's Fox School of Business in 2011. Both the time I spent on a diverse campus and the experiences I had touring America helped me expand my horizons. I made lasting connections with people from other cultures and backgrounds.But like most millennials, I<a href="https://www.insider.com/i-graduated-college-with-over-200000-in-student-loans-2023-3"> came out of school with debt</a>, which took me almost a decade to pay off. As an in-state student, attending Temple was cheaper than other out-of-state universities, but it was still a hefty sum. In the latest academic year,<a href="https://payingforcollege.temple.edu/cost-attendance" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> in-state tuition at Temple starts at $17,136 per year.</a> Out-of-state tuition is nearly double the price, at $30,864 per academic year.<div type="image" title="Marina Bay Sands in Singapore." height="1536" width="2048" msid="99581537" hostid="261" sizebytes="245730"></div><h2>I ended up in Singapore in August 2012, after accepting a job as a facultative reinsurance broker.</h2>Compared to the US, living in Singapore in the 2010s felt more modern and vibrant — things were more efficient, and the public transport was second to none. I stayed because Singapore was exciting and full of possibilities. In 2018, I married my long-time girlfriend who's Singaporean. It's been ten years since we first got together, and during the pandemic, we decided that Singapore was where we wanted to settle. I obtained permanent residency – the equivalent of a green card in the US – in Singapore in 2020. A year later, I decided to go back to school.<div type="image" title="James Guardino and his wife." height="799" width="1065" msid="99581539" hostid="261" sizebytes="90532"></div>I enrolled at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, or RSIS, in July 2021. It's a graduate school within the Nanyang Technological University, or NTU, a university that's currently ranked 19th in the QS World University Rankings,<a href="https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> sandwiched between Ivy League schools Yale and Cornell.</a>I'm pursuing a two-year Master of Science degree in international political economy part-time, and I'm set to graduate in July. The entire program cost around 9,950 Singapore dollars, or $7,000 for Singapore citizens and permanent residents. In comparison, a similar degree from<a href="https://gsas.yale.edu/resources-students/finances-fellowships/tuition" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Yale's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences would cost $46,900 per academic year.</a>For the same degree, international students would pay SG$14,970, or $11,200, after government subsidies, which is still significantly less than fees in the US. <div type="image" title="NTU's South Spine in Singapore." height="3344" width="4459" msid="99581541" hostid="261" sizebytes="1427870"></div><h2>Attending graduate school overseas is humbling, but worth it</h2>I often heard that I would never have time to go back to school while juggling my corporate career. It's definitely a big challenge and there's a lot of effort that's needed to make it work. But at RSIS, I've found that learning is self-directed — the amount I learn is based on how much time I put into reading and researching. Before going back to school, I was a political risk broker, so I enrolled in the program to learn more about political risk analysis. It's helped me transition from my job role as a broker to an underwriter.There's a big difference in the affordability of college in the US and Singapore. When I went back to school, cost was a big factor that influenced my decision to attend a university in the city-state. The subsidies allowed me to further my education — without this, I would have struggled to afford graduate school.I considered enrolling in an online or a remote graduate degree from several reputable universities in the US, but it would have set me back at least $30,000, which just wasn't realistic considering my wife and I are looking to start a family.<div type="image" title="Inside a classroom at NTU." height="3010" width="4013" msid="99581542" hostid="261" sizebytes="1342236"></div>Most students at RSIS are from Asia, so it's not often I come across other students from the US or even Europe. It's a humbling experience learning in a country outside your own, and learning from the unique perspectives of other students who grew up in Southeast Asia, China, and beyond.As an American, I've found a lot of value in coming to Singapore and attending graduate school. The US has fantastic universities, but being here has helped me better understand other cultures. Going back to school in another country has felt foreign and even daunting at times, but I think that's a good thing for anyone coming from the West, especially if you're willing to put yourself in other people's shoes.I'm thankful that many students in Singapore — even if they aren't citizens — can secure grants and financial aid. The money I'm saving on tuition has helped me build a strong foundation for me and my wife's future together.

<img class="gwt-Image" src="/photo/52758047.cms" style="width: 800px; height: 600px;" />The QS Asia University Rankings has found out that Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has made it to the top 50 universities in Asia this year by jumping 13 places from its position last year. It is now ranked 43. With this, four IITs – Kanpur, Madras, Bombay and Delhi are featured among the top ones in Asia. 
 
IIT-Kanpur gained 10 places to be ranked as the 48th university. Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru which remained India's best university with 33rd rank was closely followed by IIT-Bombay (35th rank) and IIT-Delhi (36th rank). If we go beyond the top 50, IIT-Kharagpur was placed 51st and two other IITs - Roorkee (78) and Guwahati (94) - made it to the top 100. 
 <keyword id="6360099" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-University">Delhi University</keyword> (DU), which had got 91st position last year, jumped several steps and was ranked 66th. University of Calcutta was ranked 108th, a big jump from 149th last year, University of Mumbai (145), while Banaras Hindu University was placed at 155th position. <keyword id="49466" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panjab-University">Panjab University</keyword> featured in the 251 to 300 bracket. Overall, like last year, National University of Singapore (NUS) has been ranked the best university in Asia, followed by University of Hong Kong. 
 The QS report has clearly brought good news for IITs, especially for <keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras">IIT Madras</keyword>. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, the Director of the institution said: "We are delighted to be listed in the top 50 Asian Universities. We have been focused on growing and improving our research, teaching and overall curriculum as part of our strategic plan 2020 and it appears to be paying off. We will persevere and do our best to move still further up in the Asian and global rankings in the coming years.” 
 
When asked what are the points IIT-Madras is losing out on, P Sriram, Dean of Administration, said: “It is in the perception scores (results of surveys), especially, the academic perception scores. We have to make IIT-Madras more visible internationally and make our research strengths visible in a widespread manner in order to enhance our academic reputation score.” 
 
With 23 universities in the top 350, India's performance was fifth best among the 17 countries featured in the list. National University of Singapore, University of Hong Kong and Nanyang Technological University took the top three spots in the rankings which evaluated 920 universities from Asia. 
 Notably, the rankings by British company <keyword id="990919" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Quacquarelli-Symonds">Quacquarelli Symonds</keyword> were expanded to include Asia's 350 best universities, an addition of 50 from last year. Methodological enhancements too were in place - staff with a PhD was included in the parameters. Academic reputation (30%), reputation among prospective employers (20%), faculty/student ratio (15%), citations per paper (10%), papers per faculty (10%), staff with a PhD (5%), proportion of international faculty (2.5%), proportion of international students (2.5%), proportion of inbound exchange students (2.5%) and proportion of outbound exchange students (2.5%) were the deciding factors for ranking the institutions.

The top 10 higher education institutes in the country included seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). According to the fifth edition of the annual rankings, the top three universities are IISc Bengaluru, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU). IIM Ahmedabad has been ranked as the top business school in the country, followed by IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta. Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal "Nishank" announced that Miranda College bagged the top rank among colleges, followed by Lady Sri Ram College for Women, Hindu College and St Stephen's College -- all under the Delhi University (DU). According to the rankings, the top three engineering colleges in the country are IIT Madras, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay. In the pharmacy category, the top institute is Delhi's Jamia Hamdard, followed by the Panjab University, Chandigarh and the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research, Mohali. In the medical colleges category, AIIMS, Delhi bagged the top spot, followed by PGI, Chandigarh and CMC, Vellore. The annual rankings are usually announced in April but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "These rankings act as a guide to students for selection of universities based on a set criteria and helps universities to improve their performance on various ranking parameters and identify gaps in research and areas of improvement. This exercise has also created a habit of organising data by the institutions and most of all, these institutions attempt to become more competitive," Nishank said. The HRD minister attributed the performance of Indian institutions in international rankings to the weightage given by them to the parameter of perception and reputation. "I do not agree to their parameters, be it the Times Higher Education Ranking or QS rankings, some of our very credible institutions have produced alumni who are spread across the globe, we are doing excellent research, we should be judged on those parameters," he said. The ranking framework evaluates institutions on five broad generic groups of parameters -- teaching, learning and resources (TLR), research and professional practice (RP), graduation outcomes (GO), outreach and inclusivity (OI) and perception (PR). The ranks are given on the basis of the sum total of marks assigned for each of these five broad groups of parameters. The dental colleges in the country were ranked for the first time by the NIRF. Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Manipal College of Dental Sciences and DY Patil Vidyapeeth were ranked the top three institutes in this category. The top three institutions for architecture studies are IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee and National Institute of Technology, Calicut. The top three law schools are -- National Law School of India University, Bengaluru; National Law University, New Delhi and Nalsar University of Law, Hyderabad.
