In the rankings, released in London recently, IIT Bombay was evaluated as India's top higher education institution for its excellence in employability, social concern, and environment. IIT Bombay was featured in the 281-300 rank range, followed by IIT Delhi (321-340 rank) and <keyword id="58265" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jawaharlal-nehru-university" source="Orion">Jawaharlal Nehru University</keyword> (JNU) at the third rank (361-380). Apart from this, IIT Bombay was also included in the world's top 100 institutes based on the employability of its graduates. IIT Delhi was ranked for its employability and environment while Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was ranked for gender equality and removing other inequalities. In terms of competition and academic freedom, <keyword id="6360099" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi-university" source="Orion">Delhi University</keyword> ranked fourth in India. Globally, the University of California was declared the top university, followed by the <keyword id="127994" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="university-of-toronto" source="Orion">University of Toronto</keyword> and the <keyword id="156050" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="university-of-british-columbia" source="Orion">University of British Columbia</keyword> in second and third ranks respectively. The US dominates the rankings with 135 ranked universities (19.2 per cent of the total). Of these, 30 universities are included in the top 100. Similarly, the UK was ranked second with 67 British universities being included in the rankings. After the US and the UK, Australia and Germany are at the forefront of this ranking. The students and teachers of JNU are excited by the university's performance in the rankings. JNU Vice Chancellor Professor Santishree D. Pandit said that she congratulates the students and teachers of JNU "for fulfilling the dream of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar and Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword>". In the rankings, IIT Kharagpur was featured in the 551-600 rank range. IIT Kharagpur has secured the highest in continuous and regular research efforts. QS Rankings: IIT Bombay best in employability, IIT Delhi ranks second

<ul><li>Indian universities rank almost as high as global universities in the engineering and technology domain. </li><li>According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Delhi feature in the top 50 for the first time. </li><li>Department-wise, IIT Bombay and Kharagpur rank at 41st and 66th for mineral &amp; mining engineering and IIT Delhi stood at 49th for electrical &amp; electronic engineering. </li><li>Overall, five Indian institutions ranked in the top 100 universities, compared to three last year. This includes IIT Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur. </li></ul>Indian engineers are well known around the world. Now, its universities are being ranked high especially in the engineering and technology domain. According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject, India’s premier engineering institutions — Bombay and Delhi campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) — have been ranked in the top 50 universities for the very first time. IIT Delhi ranked 44th while IIT Bombay crawled up nine spots to rank 47th in the global list. Department-wise, IIT Bombay and Kharagpur rank at 41st and 66th for mineral and mining engineering and IIT Delhi stood at 49th for electrical and electronic engineering. "It is a significant achievement of our premiere engineering institutions, which has made India proud. This is the result of continuous efforts of our government to promote the environment of research and innovation in our educational institutions," Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' said. Overall, five Indian institutions ranked in the top 100 universities, compared to three last year. This includes IIT Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur. "This is the result of the various measures we have taken in the institute on boosting the research ecosystem on the campus, strengthening our connect with the external stakeholders, significantly enhanced internationalization efforts from the institute and various other measures initiated in the last three years," IIT Delhi director V Ramgopal Rao told news agency PTI. This comes as good news to the Indian universities that were striving to make a mark, globally. Nearly 20 universities were ranked in the top 200 in the <a href="https://www.qs.com/rankings-revealed-qs-wur-asia-2020/">QS World University Rankings: Asia 2020</a> this year. However, the IITs — Bombay, Delhi and Madras campuses — did not make it to the top 30. But IIT Indore has turned out to be the only institution that has shown a positive trend. The institute crawled up by 53 places — from ranking 241 in 2019 to 188 in 2020. The QS rankings assess universities on 11 parameters including academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper and paper per faculty and others. Located in Madhya Pradesh, IIT Indore is one of the eight new IITs established by the Indian government. It came into existence a decade ago under the mentorship of IIT Bombay. In 2016, it started functioning at its own campus. Among the BRICS nations, the institute ranks 97 and is known for its high research output among the Asian universities. It scored 94 points for papers per faculty metric and 64 points for citations per paper. The rankings for other IITs in the top 200 — Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee and Guwahati campuses — dropped as compared to last year. The elite IITs did not make it to the top 30. IIT Bombay, which is the top ranking Indian institution slipped by one spot to at 34 compared to its 2019 ranking. It ranks 21 in terms of employer reputation and 32 for academic reputation as per the list. On the other hand, IIT Delhi, which was ranked at 40th position last year dropped by three spots to 43. “The number of universities has nearly doubled, and the number of colleges has grown by 50%. India’s IIT Indore crawls up by 53 places in the top 200 Asian universities while 8 other IITs drop

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore was ranked second in the University Rankings, globally for its research facilities. This makes IISc the first Indian institution to get nearly 100,000 citations in research papers in a span of five years. Last year, the institute was ranked sixth among the top performing Indian universities. “The Indian Higher Education system is making progress in some key areas. The sector requires more substantial, sustained and strategic investments both in research and education,” Ben Sowter, QS Research Director said. Four of the 23 prominent Indian institutions ranked, improved on the performance in the higher education sector. But seven IITs reported a drop in rank. IISc is now the world's second best research institute: QS University Rankings

Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi have made it to the top 200 in QS World University Rankings 2017. 
 
IISc is placed in the 152th position while IIT Delhi secured 185th rank. Other IITs like, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharaqpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati are included in the top 500 in the rankings. 
 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, <keyword id="101399" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stanford-University">Stanford University</keyword>, <keyword id="97117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harvard-University">Harvard University</keyword>, University of Cambridge and California Institute of Technology gained top five positions in the rankings. 
 In Engineering and Technology Degrees subject category, India is represented by 6 institutes in top 150 with five IITs and IISc. In top 50 Asian universities, five Indian institutes are listed in which IISc ranked 33 and rest are IITs (IIB, IITD, IITM and IITK). In Arts and Humanities subject category, DU is placed in 210th position with <keyword id="6360386" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jawaharlal-Nehru">Jawaharlal Nehru</keyword> University (JNU) in 247th position. In Social sciences, DU and JNU are in Top 400. 
 The <keyword id="2075863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="QS-World-University-Rankings-by-Subject">QS World University Rankings by Subject</keyword> ranks the world's top universities in individual subject areas, covering 46 subjects as of 2017. The rankings aim to help prospective students identify the world's leading schools in their chosen field, with the list of subjects extended each year in response to high demand for subject-level comparisons. 
 
GS ranking use four components which are combined to produce the results for each of the subject rankings, with weightings adapted for each discipline: Academic reputation, Employer reputation, Research citations per paper, H-index.

It has asked the 23 Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) to plan a course of action to improve them. The international ranking of IITs slipped further this year. None of these premier institutions featured in the top 100 universities in the global higher education surveys. "The issue was discussed in the IIT Council meeting. It is important to work on research excellence. The IITs have been asked to work on improving their national and international rankings. For this, each IIT will come up with an action plan," PTI<a href="https://www.livemint.com/education/news/iits-asked-to-improve-international-ranking-to-come-up-with-action-plan-11569820879448.html"> reported </a>citing HRD Ministry official. IITs aside, the ministry is wondering why its top universities like Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Hyderabad University do not feature in the top university lists. “The institutes ought to improve themselves first instead of complaining,” The Print <a href="https://theprint.in/india/education/upset-iits-complain-about-times-rankings-hrd-ministry-says-improve-yourselves-first/291061/">reported</a> citing the ministry’s response to the IITs that complained about the drop in their ranks. This move came after Times Higher Education (THE) rankings and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University rankings. According to the THE rankings, only six Indian institutions were spotted in the top 500 universities, globally. None of the Indian universities — including IITs and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) — made it to the top 100 list. In QS rankings, IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi and IISc-Bangalore were the only three Indian institutes that featured in top 200 universities. Indian government demands an action plan from IITs to improve global rankings

<ul><li>The Indian government has launched Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration (<keyword id="147664" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="SPARC">SPARC</keyword>) pushing for more research initiatives globally. </li><li>This includes joint research in several domains including Science, Technology, Social Science and Humanities. </li><li><keyword id="6746850" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-human-resource">The Human Resource</keyword> Ministry recently accredited funds worth ₹4.18 billion, accepting 600 research proposals. </li></ul>The Indian government has said it will fund joint research projects at foreign labs for students at Indian universities. Under the programme called Scheme for Promotion of Academic and Research Collaboration or SPARC <a href="https://sparc.iitkgp.ac.in/">launched</a> late last year to improve the research ecosystem in India’s higher education, it will offer students a chance to work in at least 28 global universities. The programme will include research in several domains including science, technology, social science and humanities. However, the funding is limited to joint research with foreign universities. The government is now reportedly infusing funds for the joint research programs. The Human Resource Ministry recently accredited funds <a href="http://pib.nic.in/newsite/PrintRelease.aspx?relid=187147">worth ₹4.18 billion</a>, accepting 600 research proposals from Indian institutes and global universities. Of the total approved projects, several projects are on food processing optimisation, seed testing procedures, enabling smart cities via IoT technologies from institutes across New Zealand, India and Australia. How does it work? The scheme reportedly aims to aid Indian students at the most advanced stage in Science — clinical research structural genomics and evolutionary biology, <keyword id="107950" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence">artificial intelligence</keyword> and electronics and communication, cognitive science, <keyword id="2900331" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-humanities">digital humanities</keyword>. Indian institutes can partner with foreign universities that have been listed on the top 500 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/here-are-the-top-10-indian-universities-to-build-tech-skills/articleshow/68776861.cms">QS World University Rankings</a>. Indian university students looking to pursue research abroad can now get funding from the government

It's been edited for length and clarity.I was born in Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania, and lived in the Delaware Valley for 24 years. I grew up in the suburbs, and the idea of leaving the US and moving abroad never came up. That changed in 2006. I was enrolled in Temple University — a state-funded research university in my hometown — at the time. I ended up putting my studies on hold to pursue music and follow in my parents' footsteps. I went on tour with a band across the US for a year. There was something liberating about life on the road.In 2008, I returned to Temple to study economics. My time in college wasn't easy as I went back to school <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-crash-financial-crisis-economy-sofi-liz-young-investors-2023-3">following the global financial crisis</a>. Despite the challenges, I graduated summa cum laude from Temple's Fox School of Business in 2011. Both the time I spent on a diverse campus and the experiences I had touring America helped me expand my horizons. I made lasting connections with people from other cultures and backgrounds.But like most millennials, I<a href="https://www.insider.com/i-graduated-college-with-over-200000-in-student-loans-2023-3"> came out of school with debt</a>, which took me almost a decade to pay off. As an in-state student, attending Temple was cheaper than other out-of-state universities, but it was still a hefty sum. In the latest academic year,<a href="https://payingforcollege.temple.edu/cost-attendance" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> in-state tuition at Temple starts at $17,136 per year.</a> Out-of-state tuition is nearly double the price, at $30,864 per academic year.<div type="image" title="Marina Bay Sands in Singapore." height="1536" width="2048" msid="99581537" hostid="261" sizebytes="245730"></div><h2>I ended up in Singapore in August 2012, after accepting a job as a facultative reinsurance broker.</h2>Compared to the US, living in Singapore in the 2010s felt more modern and vibrant — things were more efficient, and the public transport was second to none. I stayed because Singapore was exciting and full of possibilities. In 2018, I married my long-time girlfriend who's Singaporean. It's been ten years since we first got together, and during the pandemic, we decided that Singapore was where we wanted to settle. I obtained permanent residency – the equivalent of a green card in the US – in Singapore in 2020. A year later, I decided to go back to school.<div type="image" title="James Guardino and his wife." height="799" width="1065" msid="99581539" hostid="261" sizebytes="90532"></div>I enrolled at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, or RSIS, in July 2021. It's a graduate school within the Nanyang Technological University, or NTU, a university that's currently ranked 19th in the QS World University Rankings,<a href="https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> sandwiched between Ivy League schools Yale and Cornell.</a>I'm pursuing a two-year Master of Science degree in international political economy part-time, and I'm set to graduate in July. The entire program cost around 9,950 Singapore dollars, or $7,000 for Singapore citizens and permanent residents. In comparison, a similar degree from<a href="https://gsas.yale.edu/resources-students/finances-fellowships/tuition" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Yale's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences would cost $46,900 per academic year.</a>For the same degree, international students would pay SG$14,970, or $11,200, after government subsidies, which is still significantly less than fees in the US. <div type="image" title="NTU's South Spine in Singapore." height="3344" width="4459" msid="99581541" hostid="261" sizebytes="1427870"></div><h2>Attending graduate school overseas is humbling, but worth it</h2>I often heard that I would never have time to go back to school while juggling my corporate career. It's definitely a big challenge and there's a lot of effort that's needed to make it work. But at RSIS, I've found that learning is self-directed — the amount I learn is based on how much time I put into reading and researching. Before going back to school, I was a political risk broker, so I enrolled in the program to learn more about political risk analysis. It's helped me transition from my job role as a broker to an underwriter.There's a big difference in the affordability of college in the US and Singapore. When I went back to school, cost was a big factor that influenced my decision to attend a university in the city-state. The subsidies allowed me to further my education — without this, I would have struggled to afford graduate school.I considered enrolling in an online or a remote graduate degree from several reputable universities in the US, but it would have set me back at least $30,000, which just wasn't realistic considering my wife and I are looking to start a family.<div type="image" title="Inside a classroom at NTU." height="3010" width="4013" msid="99581542" hostid="261" sizebytes="1342236"></div>Most students at RSIS are from Asia, so it's not often I come across other students from the US or even Europe. It's a humbling experience learning in a country outside your own, and learning from the unique perspectives of other students who grew up in Southeast Asia, China, and beyond.As an American, I've found a lot of value in coming to Singapore and attending graduate school. The US has fantastic universities, but being here has helped me better understand other cultures. Going back to school in another country has felt foreign and even daunting at times, but I think that's a good thing for anyone coming from the West, especially if you're willing to put yourself in other people's shoes.I'm thankful that many students in Singapore — even if they aren't citizens — can secure grants and financial aid. The money I'm saving on tuition has helped me build a strong foundation for me and my wife's future together.
