However, changing preferences of audiences have now resulted in content being the primary focus. These highly touted <keyword id="17663" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="superstars" source="Orion">superstars</keyword> are no longer able to attract audiences based on just their brand names,” said a report by Emkay Research on media and entertainment. Two movies of new-age star Ranveer Singh - 83 and Jayeshbhai Jordaar too failed at the box office, in addition to Akshay Kumar’s Prithviraaj and Bacchan Pandey. Multiplexes need Bollywood - can’t bank on the South In spite of the good performance of South movies, the box office collections of theatres bank on Bollywood. It contributes to around 60% of total collections. Bollywood movies were also the highest-grossing movies in 11 of the 16 pre-Covid quarters. But the last two quarters changed this dynamic. Only three films delivered a strong show, which means Bollywood share in hit movies went down from 40% earlier to a mere 10%. Their respective strong collections could be attributed to S S Rajamouli’s fame after Bahubali and the success of the first part of the movie. But a deeper change seems to be afoot. “The performance of movies like Pushpa in the Hindi hinterland indicates that customer preferences are evolving. We believe that a turnaround in Bollywood’s fortunes is critical for sustaining box-office collection growth, as performance of regional movies – South and non-South - beyond their core markets is generally sporadic in nature,” Emkay says. The success of films like The Kashmir Files and Bhool Bhulaiya 2 indicates that audiences are up for only quality content. The third movie which had the multiplex cash registers ringing was Suryavanshi, in the post-Covid era. “Most movies released in the last 2-3 quarters have gotten mixed to negative critic reviews, indicating that weak content is the primary factor for the poor performance,” said the report. Social media trends like Boycott Bollywood are not helping either. From nepotism to religious sentiments - various factors are triggering social media campaigns - which are strong enough to have an effect on their box office collections. So much so, some such targeted movies have not made it past a week in the theatres. “The low percentage of collections of films after the first week is also a testimony to the lower quality of content that the industry has churned out in the last couple of quarters,” the report said. It’s not Bollywood films, it’s the superstars that people seem to be tired of

<ul><li>Due to inflation, theatres across the board have increased their prices for movie tickets and food and beverages by 5-20%.</li><li>However, their sales remain unaffected so far.</li><li>After almost two years of dry spell, multiplexes and single screens are seeing a strong recovery in 2022.</li><li>Despite costly tickets, consumer sentiment remains high as they flock to watch big-ticket movies on the silver screen with their loved ones.</li></ul>India’s cinema industry went through a severe drought due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Several pandemic-induced country-wide lockdowns forced theatres to shut down completely for more than 18 months, leading to a significant drop in revenue. However, after opening their doors to viewers in the second half of 2021, theatres are back to the pre-pandemic level of collections this month. Inox Leisure’s chief programming officer, Rajender Singh Jyala, said, “Last three months have been good for us. On average, we are clocking more than ₹1000-1500 crore every month.” Sharing which movies set the ball rolling at the multiplex chain this year, Jyala added, “Movies RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi pushed the recovery. Before that, Kashmir Files and now with Bhool Bhulaiya 2, our footfalls and domestic ticket sales are at pre-pandemic level or even better.” With eagerly-awaited Bollywood movies such as Prithviraj, Brahmastra, and Lal Singh Chaddha slated to be released in the next three to four months, Jyala is optimistic that the momentum will continue this year. With its current progression, 2022 might turn out to be a golden year for the cinema industry, driven by home-grown content. Media consulting firm Ormax Media’s Partner, Gautam Jain, said, “The overall domestic <keyword id="25892" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="box-office" source="Orion">box office</keyword> collections have crossed the ₹4000 crore gross mark from January to April. This is the highest gross box office collection for January to April since 2018." "Given this growth trajectory and looking at the line-up of films slated to release this year, a gross box office collection of ₹12,000 crore looks possible, which would make this year the highest ever in terms of the gross box office [collection]," he further added. While INOX has reverted to the pre-pandemic level on all metrics, Ormax Jain said that the cinema industry’s overall footfalls and ticket sales are still lower than the pre-pandemic levels. Explaining why the gross box office revenue is higher than 2019 while footfalls continue to be low, Jain said, “The gross box office collections are higher due to the ticket prices being higher by 15-30% across languages. The ticket prices have increased even in south markets.” Cinema-lovers ignore soaring inflation, theatres remain unaffected As the cinema industry jumped past the first major roadblock that COVID-19 threw in its path, it faced another challenge this month – soaring inflation. The rise in inflation has affected all industries. The Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry has resorted to hiking its product prices and shrinking its products across its portfolio. Theatres have also raised their prices for movie tickets and food &amp; beverages (F&amp;B) by 5 to 20% in different parts of the country. However, audiences returning to the big screen, after being deprived of the theatrical experience for close to two years, seem to be indifferent to the price increase. “The rise in the prices of movie tickets and F&amp;B in line to cover inflation seems to be reasonable. Average ticket prices have risen by about 8 to 10% and over 15% in some states and cities. At the same time, the F&amp;B prices have increased between 5 to 10%. The pinch of price increase seems to be ignored by the patrons as both occupancy levels (irrespective of pricing) and the spending on F&amp;B increased during the period,” said consulting and advisory firm Deloitte India’s Partner, Chandrashekhar Mantha. He calls the steady recovery in this quarter a result of ‘revenge consumption trend,’ wherein consumers are trying to catch up on everything they missed out on in the last two years. The movie industry’s strong content pipeline has also struck a chord with the audience, further pushing the recovery. Multiplex chain INOX hasn’t felt the inflation’s impact either. While it has increased its movie ticket and F&amp;B prices by 5-10% across its 675 screens, its sales and footfall continue to go up. “The increase is not on that level wherein consumers can feel the pinch in their pockets. It is between 5 to 10%. In fact, spends on F&amp;B and the ticket sales that we're seeing is more than the pre-pandemic level,” Jyala told Business Insider India. On the other hand, Ormax Media’s Jain said that small budget films are feeling the impact of inflation and movie-goers are choosing to watch only big-ticket movies that seem to be worth their money. “Audiences are choosing to watch films that offer a theatrical big screen experience such as RRR or KGF Chapter 2 or spectacle films like Doctor Strange or Spider-Man or a collective experience Bhool Bhulaiya 2 or Saunkan Saunkne. Films that did not offer this, failed to get the audiences – for example Jayeshbhai Jordaar or Jersey," said Jain. "Apart from the ticket prices, since the audiences are aware of the eventual OTT premieres now and are exposed to OTT viewing, any film that does not fit the above criteria has failed to get a decent opening weekend as well,” he said. However, it is too soon to tell. Bollywood movies such as Jayeshbhai Jordaar or Jersey also failed to rake in numbers because they didn’t leave a good impression on critics. Regional movies jump ahead Regional movies like KGF 2.0, RRR and Pushpa have been reporting recording-breaking revenue collections at the box office, surpassing Hindi movies like Jayeshbhai Jordaar, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 so far. KGF 2.0 breached ₹800 crore revenue market in terms of net box office collection, which was slightly higher than RRR at ₹720 crore, revealed analytics and financial firm Elara Capital. The small to medium budget films in regional markets have reported a net box office collection of ₹50-55 crore each. On the other hand, recently released Hindi films have not been able to breach the ₹25-30 crore mark, which is a 50% less target than regional. “Relaxation of Average Ticket Price (ATP) cap in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana markets is one of the reasons for regional content reporting higher Box Office collections. The next big regional film release slated for June 3 – Vikram, may collect ₹150-175 crore net in terms of lifetime box office collection,” said Karan Taurani, Senior VP - Research Analyst, Elara Capital. A bright year ahead The rest of the year will see some major releases such as Akshay Kumar’s Prithiviraj, Aamir khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha, Varun Dhawan’s Jug Jug Jiyo, Ayushman Khurana’s Doctor G and Anek. From the regional markets, Virata Parvam of Rana Dugabatti, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect of R. Madhavan, Agent of Mamotty, Ravansura of Ravi Teja, the star-studded Vikram, are lined up for the second half of 2022. The Hollywood releases will further strengthen this pipeline. So, the year ahead looks bright for the movie exhibition industry. Analysts and movie exhibitors are confident about seeing a continued growth momentum in the next half.

Theatres cross pre-pandemic gross revenue collection despite pricey movie tickets

This is the view held by five brokerage firms — ICICI Securities/Direct, Motilal Oswal, Prabhudas Lilladher and ShareKhan. They believe that good movies can help them replicate the March success which came with superhits like the controversial Kashmir Files; Rajamouli’s RRR, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama Gangubai Kathiawadi, followed up by KGF 2 in April. “They witnessed a March — which was the best ever in the history, led by superlative performances of movies,” ICICI Direct said in its views on PVR and INOX both. The March footfalls made up for half of the Jan-March quarters footfalls in theaters. But both these companies need more than a good month to turn things around. A strong recovery in footfalls and sales of these listed theatre companies will be driven by ‘strong content slate lines’, as per ICICI Direct. If all goes well, it estimates that both these companies can cross their pre-covid earnings in the current financial year. These companies are in desperate need of a ‘recovery worthy’ movie releases. Aamir Khan has Lal Singh Chaddha, that’s a remake of Tom Hanks’ Forrest Gump. Salman Khan also promises another movie from his formulaic stable — called Kabhi Eid Kabhi Diwali. The King of Khans — Shah Rukh Khan too is releasing a movie after four years called Pathan. The fact that these Khan movies are ‘much-awaited’ can help drive footfalls. INOX CEO Alok Tandon spoke of an influx of good releases in FY23, in a conversation with Business Insider India. “2022 or financial year 2023 will be one of the best for the Indian film industry… I feel like we have some very, very strong lineup,” Tandon said. He also confirmed that March was their best month yet and the movie business had been operating in limited capacity over the last few years due to Covid-19. Brahmastra, Laal Singh Chaddha and Avatar — movies that can determine the fortunes of INOX and PVR

Located eight km from Narmadapuram district in Madhya Pradesh is the small village of <keyword id="14298711" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rohna" source="Orion">Rohna</keyword>. Its 396 households comprise of 1,886 people, including 1,400 voters. Most families here belong to Backward Castes, with some six per cent of the population listed under Scheduled Castes. Agriculture is the main means of livelihood in Rohna, where 14 families live below the poverty line - however, this nondescript village is a matter of pride to its residents. Social worker Lakshman Singh Rajput proudly told 101Reporters, "Our village has no illicit liquor or gambling dens. We are also ahead in agricultural output, with many farmers here into organic farming. Roopsingh Rajput was awarded for his farming efforts. There are many who also breed cattle and produce 2,000l to 2,500l of milk every day." And now, Rohna is in the news for its decision to elect a 'pink', all-women <keyword id="49290" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="panchayat" source="Orion">panchayat</keyword>, completely unopposed. How a 'pink' panchayat emerged in Rohna Panchayat elections had not been held in Madhya Pradesh for a while, to finally being organised following court intervention. Women were granted 33 per cent reservation, in keeping with the 73rd amendment, though Madhya Pradesh increased women's reservation to 50 per cent, the first state to make this change. Rajesh Samle, a social worker and local resident who's been working on agriculture and women's empowerment in Rohna as part of the Gram Sewa Samiti, told 101Reporters, "When the reservation formalities for the three-tier panchayat elections were completed, our panchayat seats went to the lot of our women. That's when discussions began about electing an unopposed panchayat for the village, to demonstrate our unity." "As for the candidates, Sharmila Rajput emerged as the front-runner, since she had been active on all village-level issues and had always taken the lead in community matters. Once her name was proposed, there was complete consensus from all quarters." Sharmila Rajput, the new sarpanch, is 48 years old. She was born in Rohna and was married to Rajendra Singh Rajput from the same village after completing Class 10. Under Sharmila and her all-women panchayat, women's empowerment, education and health have emerged as key developmental issues. However, the new village chief said she had not imagined ever being part of the village panchayat, let alone leading it. "I wouldn't have contested if the chief minister had not announced the Rs 15 lakh reward for an unopposed election and the sarpanch's seat had not been reserved for women," Sharmila added. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister <keyword id="169974" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shivraj-singh" source="Orion">Shivraj Singh</keyword> Chauhan had announced that a women-only gram panchayat would be given Rs 15 lakh for development. He had also announced an award of Rs 5 lakh to those panchayats that would elect their chief unopposed. Moreover, panchayats that elected their sarpanch for two consecutive years unopposed were to be awarded Rs 7 lakh, and gram panchayats that elected an all-women panchayat were to be granted Rs 12 lakh. For those who had elected an all-women panchayat (including a sarpanch) unopposed were to be given Rs 15 lakh. Elaborating on how Rohna got a women-only 'pink' panchayat, Local resident Monu Chouhan added: "Once the sarpanch was elected unopposed, the idea of a panchayat completely run by women emerged. Although a few men had filed their candidature, the idea of a women-only panchayat appealed to them. They immediately withdrew their candidature in favour of the women from their own families. Thus, all 18 wards elected women to the panchayat. This saw Sandhya Malviya, Pushpa, Dipali Yadav, Meena Viswakarma, Sunitabai, Jyoti Samle, Ritu Chauhan, Dhanwati, Rajan, Vidya, Saroj, Kusum Patel, Premvati, Jyoti Surendra Singh, Shobabai, Phula, Kasturi and Vyjanti get elected unopposed. Vidya was elected the panch for the second consecutive year. Her son <keyword id="616050" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="veer-singh" source="Orion">Veer Singh</keyword> Chauhan earlier held the position. Chauhan said that in this small village, more than four people filed their candidature for the sarpanch's post, though that could have fuelled enmity within the community and raised their election expenses. "This is why we held a joint meeting and agreed to elect an unopposed panchayat," he added. The irony, however, is that the decision to elect this 'pink' panchayat didn't involve any say from the women in the community. The role of kabaddi While the very prospect of electing consensus candidates to office may seem remarkable, the unified approach to community matters in Rohna can be attributed to the game of kabaddi. According to senior kabaddi player Rajkumar Ginyare, "Coach Harish Malviya introduced kabaddi in Rohna in 1998. The game became so popular here that everyone wanted to play it. Eventually, Rohna produced several national-level players. But the sport's most important contribution was its unifying nature. "Earlier, people were divided among different castes and groups; kabaddi put an end to all that and brought them together. This saw villagers unite to put an end to the tradition of mrityubhoj (a memorial service for the departed wherein a big feast is held for the community), kept youngsters away from intoxicants and instead made them health conscious." In 2017, Rohna hosted the National Professional Kabaddi Championships. The event saw the participation of Air India, Oil and Natural Gas Commission and Indian Railways. National-level players like Ajay Thakur, Rahul Chaudhury and Pradip Narwal Sandeep Narwal visited Rohna and put the small village on India's kabaddi map. The final event attracted some 50,000 people, even forcing road traffic in this sparsely populated region to be diverted! However, the village that's currently celebrating the election of an all-women panchayat hardly sees any women's participation in the sport, their involvement restricted to the bleachers. Prize money and its uses At present, the Rohna panchayat awaits the Rs 15 lakh it is rightfully due, although it's not yet sure how the money will be used for developmental purposes. Panchayats that won the sum following the last local elections saw rules being framed to spend the money on projects. "The gram sabha ought to have the right to utilise the money it's won for electing its candidates unopposed," said Lakshman Singh Rajput, a social activist, while Panchayat Secretary <keyword id="14298712" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vijay-chaurey" source="Orion">Vijay Chaurey</keyword> added, "Since there have been no guidelines issued so far in this regard, we must get to decide how to utilise these funds." Meanwhile, Sharmila is overjoyed at being elected unopposed. "We need to fulfil the expectations of our electorate. Our primary concern is the education and health of girls. I was unable to study beyond Class 10; I do not want this to happen to others. I'd like every girl in the village to go for higher education and earn a living. I wish for all adolescent girls to enjoy good health and to put an end to the prevalent discrimination between boys and girls." "In addition to these, one also has to fulfil the basic developmental responsibilities of the panchayat. We will work for the betterment of the youth, so that the village ultimately benefits in the long run." Panchayat member Jyoti Samle echoes her sarpanch's views: "It's a matter of joy to be part of an entire panchayat represented solely by women. We shall work hard to justify the faith bestowed on us." Acknowledging the role an elected panchayat can play in ushering in progress, local resident <keyword id="349013" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vinod-yadav" source="Orion">Vinod Yadav</keyword> listed the issues that need immediate attention: "Our panchayat wants to prioritise education. The local school offers education up to the higher secondary level, but the building needs urgent repair. We also need to develop the ground for children." Regardless of their motivation, the residents of Rohna have set a precedent by electing a 'pink' panchayat. The story of an MP village, its kabbadi and how it got a 'pink panchayat'

New Delhi, Jan 28 () Realty major DLF Ltd on Tuesday said the company has revamped its shopping mall at Saket in the national capital with an investment of over Rs 100 crore and the retail complex will be fully functional by March.
 The company has done the soft launch of this shopping complex 'DLF Avenue' on Monday, which has a leasable area of 5.2 lakh sq ft.
 "We had shut our DLF Saket mall in February last year. We have invested over Rs 100 crore on revamping it," DLF Shopping Malls Executive Director Pushpa Bector told .
 There are total 105 brands of which 95 are new, she said adding that the retail complex would help generate direct and indirect employment opportunities of over 1,500 people.
 Bector said the company has increased the space for food and beverages (F&amp;B) to 28 per cent from 12 per cent earlier. The mall also houses 5-screen multiplex by Cinepolis and co-working facility.
 "The focus is on integrated experience of shopping, dining and culture making it a destination to be in for millennials and the discerning South Delhi consumers," she added.
 Bector said the mall is bringing together the best of Indian and international fashion and apparel brands across fast fashion, athleisure and ethnic fusion. The mall has brands like Under Armour, Go Sports, Superkicks, Nykaa Luxe, Forever 21, Uniqlo and Marks &amp; Spencer among others.
 The company expects a footfall of 12 lakh per month.
 "We are positive that DLF Avenue will further take consumer retail experience several notches higher. At DLF we continuously explore opportunities to enhance the shopping experiences," DLF Managing Director (Rental Business) Sriram Khattar said.
 This mall comes under DLF Cyber City Developers Ltd (DCCDL) which is a joint venture between DLF Ltd and Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC. DLF has nearly 67 per cent stake in the DCCDL while rest is being held by the GIC.
 DLF has a rental portfolio of over 36 million sq ft of which 32 million sq ft is office and rest retail and it earns over Rs 3,000 crore annually through rent.
 DLF Mall of India in Noida, Uttar Pradesh is biggest retail asset with around 2 million sq ft of leasable area.
 As part of its strategy to focus on commercial real estate, DLF last week announced an investment of Rs 5,000 crore to develop large commercial project largely office in Chennai as part of its strategy to expand portfolio of rent yielding properties. MJH SHW

“Our research showed that the wallet power of the people residing in and around<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=noida&amp;sortorder=effectivedate"> Noida</a> was exceptionally high. Once we knew this, the next step was obviously to zero in on the exact location. We settled with <keyword id="18858" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Noida">Noida</keyword> Sector 18 as it is the mouth of Noida and also because we decided to look at the location through drivetime. The location would thus attract people not only from Noida and East Delhi but also from Greater Kailash, Defence Colony and even South Delhi,” said Pushpa Bector, Executive Vice President of DLF. 
 
And, thus began the work for India’s first destination mall and the country’s largest mall, spread over a whopping 2 million sq feet and is 95 percent leased out housing over 330 brands. 
 
When asked what they mean when they call <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mall+of+india&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Mall of India</a>, a ‘destination mall,’ Sriram Khattar, CEO DLF Rental Business, is quick to respond, “We didn’t want to create just a mall. With <keyword id="6396861" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mall-of-India">Mall of India</keyword>, we wanted to create an experience,” adding that people don’t come to mall just to shop or watch a movie- they come for a holistic experience. And, that is exactly what they intended to give people with Mall of India. 
 
To achieve that, the duo completely transformed the traditional structure of a mall by not only building a mall with six floors, but also having stores beyond the third floor. “The common notion is that retail stores after the 3rd floor won’t work. Thus, the biggest challenge was to convince people to go to the top and then work their way down.” explains Pushpa Bector. 
 
 
 
Additionally, they also made use of the concept of ‘zoning,’ a first for any mall and divided the six floors of MOI into five zones in order to make the mall experience a lot more convenient. They also roped in quality international brands, some of whom even have flagship stores at MOI. 
 
Thus, Mall of India which opened its doors last year in December but officially launched yesterday, is divided into five zones- The Lower Ground Floor is christened as the ‘Market Place’ and comprises the hyperlocal markets such as Big Baazar etc. 
 The Second floor, or the ‘High Street,’ houses all the anchors, while the Ground and First Floor which are called the ‘International Boulevard’ and they comprise the best of International fashion and beauty brands such as ZARA, <keyword id="3341452" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="HM-">H&amp;M,</keyword> Marks and Spencer etc. 
 
The Third floor, which is the ‘Family World’ houses a zone for kids and also has casual dining options that include 20 restaurants offering popular cuisines. 
 The Fourth and Fifth Floor which is named the ‘Leisure Land’ offer the largest indoor entertainment zone of the country, as a result of DLF understanding the huge need for quality entertainment in the area. From <keyword id="3341450" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Smaash">Smaash</keyword>, <keyword id="3341451" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ski-India">Ski India</keyword> (modelled after Ski Dubai), to the in-house DT Cinemas and the massive food court, the Mall of India is going to be one fun affair. 
 
And, all the effort seems to have paid off. “Malls this large usually take around 12-18 months to stabilise. We have done the same in under 4-5 months,” claims Khattar. 
 
He further adds that the one-year goal is to get over one million footfall per day. At the moment, the mall sees a footfall of approximately 30,000 per day. 
 
According to Khattar, the Mall of India has also provided employment opportunities to over 6,000 people- whether directly and indirectly and all of the people employed by DLF for Mall of India are focused on making the mall a quality experience where one can spend the whole day. 
 When asked about whether having three <keyword id="45856" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Malls">malls</keyword> in the vicinity bothered them, Pushpa Bector adds that it’s not the first time they have had competition. “DLF Promenande is right next to Citywalk Saket but that has not impacted our business at all. We’re very confident of Mall of India,” she signs off. 
 
The mall is expected to generate about Rs 250 crore of just rental income for the realty firm annually.
