Vistara ramps up ops, announces connectivity between Pune and Singapore

Passenger car major <keyword id="44883" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="Orion">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> India Ltd had transported over 3.2 lakh vehicles in 2022 through Indian Railway and is setting up dedicated railway sidings at its facilities in Haryana (Manesar) and Gujarat, said a top company official. The company last year transported over 3.2 lakh vehicles using rail wagons, the highest in a calendar year since 2013 when the company got the Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) license. "Going forward, we aim to further increase these numbers. For this, we are setting up dedicated railway sidings at our facilities in Haryana (Manesar) and Gujarat," <keyword id="13455711" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hisashi-takeuchi" source="Orion">Hisashi Takeuchi</keyword>, Managing Director &amp; CEO, said. "Aligned with the Government of India's aim to reach net zero emissions by 2070, we have enhanced our efforts to reduce carbon footprint in our business operations. Our strategy to increase the use of rail mode in outbound logistics has resulted in dispatching record 3.2 lakh vehicles using railways in CY2022," he said. According to him, the use of railway wagons instead of trucks has resulted in offsetting around 1,800 MT of CO2 emissions. Maruti Suzuki to increase transport of cars through rail wagons, to set up dedicated railway sidings

South Korean auto major <keyword id="20190176" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="hyundai-motor" source="keywords">Hyundai Motor</keyword> Group on Thursday said it is looking to expand the annual production capacity across <keyword id="19906087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai" source="keywords">Hyundai</keyword> and <keyword id="19997865" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kia" source="keywords">Kia</keyword> brands in India to 15 lakh units per year, as part of its mid-to-long-term strategy in the country. Outlining the company's strategy for the India market, Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) Executive Chair Euisun Chung said the automaker plans to roll out more <keyword id="19962337" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EVs" source="keywords">EVs</keyword>, while also utilising the country as an export hub for the neighbouring countries. Chung visited India on April 23 to review the group's mid-to-long-term strategies to solidify its position as a leading mobility provider. Hyundai Motor Group is expanding its manufacturing footprint in the Indian region with the establishment of an annual production system of 1.5 million vehicle units for Hyundai Motor India and Kia India combined, the automaker stated. Hyundai Motor India will start operating its Pune plant, acquired from General Motors last year, in the second half of the next year. Hyundai Motor is currently making improvements to the facility to create a production hub capable of building more than 200,000 units annually, it said. With the addition of the Chennai plant's production capacity of 824,000 units, Hyundai Motor will have an annual production capacity of over one million units when combined with the Pune plant, it added. Besides, Kia India's yearly production capacity will also be expanded to 431,000 units within the first half of this year. "Combined together, Hyundai Motor Group will have the ability to produce approximately 1.5 million units annually in India," HMG said. The group also plans to expand its EV lineup and create an EV ecosystem to accelerate customer uptake and expand charging infrastructure. It will also strengthen its SUV sales leadership in India, HMG said. Hyundai Motor India plans to unveil its first locally produced EV in India next year, it said. Starting with the mass production of its first <keyword id="21425421" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="electric-SUV-model" source="keywords">electric SUV model</keyword> at the Chennai plant at the end of 2024, the company plans to further produce five EV models by 2030, it added. Hyundai Motor India will also utilize its sales network hubs, expanding the number of EV charging stations to 485 by 2030, HMG said. Kia India will also start production of its local EV model in 2025 and plans to further expand its EV models, it added. The company will also focus on building EV charging infrastructure, it stated. "India is among the fastest-growing economies globally, and as this growth continues the strategic importance of Hyundai Motor India will only increase," Chung said while addressing employees in a town hall meeting. He further said, "by leveraging our strong reputation and competitive quality in India, we aim to expand exports to neighbouring countries, making India the global export hub to boost our regional market competitiveness." Chung said that by around 2030, the automaker expects to see a substantial expansion in the EV market in India. "In anticipation of this evolution, Hyundai is focused on developing locally tailored EVs aimed at establishing us as a leading global EV brand," he added. "We also plan to proactively build charging stations at strategic locations 'including dealerships' to facilitate the adoption of EVs," Chung said. Hyundai plans to scale up production capacity, introduce more EVs in India

Even as the soaring prices of tomatoes are burning a hole in the common man's pocket, a farmer from Pune in Maharashtra has become a millionaire by selling his bountiful yield of the key kitchen staple for ₹3 crore in just over a month while overcoming various challenges. Farmer Ishwar Gaykar (36), from Pachghar village in Junnar tehsil of Pune district, had faced a difficult decision of dumping a large quantity of harvested tomatoes in May this year due to low prices. Undeterred by the setback, he continued to exhibit unwavering determination and work tirelessly on his 12-acre farm to cultivate tomatoes. Now, amid the skyrocketing prices of tomatoes, Gaykar's hard work has paid off handsomely, transforming him into a millionaire as he claimed to have earned ₹3 crore through the sale of his crop yield between June 11 and July 18. Talking to PTI, Gaykar said during the period, he sold 18,000 crates of tomatoes (each crate comprising 20 kg of tomatoes) at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) at Narayangaon in Junnar tehsil for ₹3 crore. He aims to earn another ₹50 lakh by selling the remainder of the produce, which is roughly 4,000 crates. The total input cost of cultivation, including transportation, was ₹40 lakh, he said. "I have an 18-acre farm where I cultivate tomatoes on 12 acres. I have sold 18,000 crates since June 11 and have so far earned ₹3 crore," said Gaykar. On June 11, his produce fetched a price of ₹770 per crate (₹37-38 per kg), and on July 18, he sold tomatoes at ₹2,200 per crate (₹110 per kg ). Gaykar, who is now happy to earn handsome dividends on the produce, recalled how he had to dump a large quantity of harvested tomatoes just two months back due to low prices. "This is the best of times for the tomato growers, but we have witnessed worst times also. In the month of May, I grew tomatoes on one-acre land, but had to throw away large quantities of the produce as the prices were very low. I had thrown the produce away as the per crate rate was just ₹50, which means ₹2.50 per kg," he said. Gaykar also said that in 2021, he incurred losses worth ₹15-16 lakh and last year also he just earned a narrow profit margin. "When I was throwing the tomatoes in May this year, this yield on the 12-acre land was under cultivation. Undeterred by the setback, I kept up my resilience and commitment towards farming and continued spending on the cultivation of tomatoes," he said. "I took good care of the produce even in the scorching May heat. Due to the high temperatures, tomato cultivation in other parts took a beating, but farmers like me benefitted as we continued to work hard," he said. Another farmer Raju Mahale, who earned more than ₹20 lakh by selling 2,500 crates in the current season, said he was also jittery about tomato cultivation after May as the per acre input cost was around ₹3.5 lakh. But, he went ahead with the cultivation, receiving good dividends now. Narayangaon agriculture market trader Akshay Solat, who purchased Gaykar's produce, said as there was a boom in the market again, he purchased tomatoes at ₹ 2,400 per crate. "I have been in this trading business for the last 15 years, but I have never seen such a boom in the tomato market. Once there was a rate of ₹ 1,500 to ₹ 1,600 per crate, but such price-wise consistency in the tomato market was never witnessed," he said. He, however, said only a handful of farmers have earned handsomely this season, including farmers from Pachghar, Otur, Ambegavhan, and Rokdi. Narayangaon APMC chief Sanjay Kale said generally in this season, their market receives 1.5 lakh to 2 lakh crates of tomatoes per day, but in the current season, it has dropped to 30,000 to 35,000 crates per day. "In the last two years, farmers incurred huge losses and could not recover their production costs, which resulted in a drop in production. During the summers, the tomato crop suffered from diseases, forcing the farmers to abandon their tomato farms," he said. "I generally get tomatoes from across the state, but because of the aforementioned reasons, the market committee is receiving the produce from Junnar and Ambegaon tehsils. These are the reasons why tomato prices have skyrocketed and demand has soared," he said. Kale said since the production of tomatoes has taken a beating in north India, traders from other states come to the market in Narayangaon to purchase the key kitchen staple. The National Cooperative Consumers' Federation (NCCF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) last week started selling tomatoes at a discounted rate of ₹ 90 per kg in Delhi-NCR and Patna in a bid to provide relief to consumers amid the high prices. The Centre had directed the two cooperatives to procure tomatoes from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra for distribution in major consumption centres, where retail prices have recorded maximum increase in the last month. "Though the NCCF and NAFED started selling tomatoes at the discounted rate, the government is buying the produce at ₹ 110 or ₹ 120 per kg, so farmers will continue to get what they are getting now," Kale said.

Sky-high tomato prices make Pune farmer a millionaire as he earns ₹3 cr in one month

The factory is expected to start operations in December 2023 and would expand the company's capabilities to meet the growing demand in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, it added. "The rapidly <keyword id="3111611" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="growing-Indian-market" source="Orion">growing Indian market</keyword> is expanding at an annual rate of about 8 per cent mainly in industries such as automobiles, food &amp; beverage, pharmaceuticals, data centres, and textiles, with further market expansion expected in the future," it said. The new two-floor, 15,400 square-metre factory will be built on 40,000 square metres of land near Pune. Neeraj Joshi, CEO of Thingsmeet Solutions, zeroed down on <keyword id="2094" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pune">Pune</keyword> when he first decided to set up a health-tech venture, not only because of the time he had spent in the city as the centre head for Infosys or his network of contacts there. Another huge reason behind his choice of place was the easy availability of the kind of talent that he wanted. 
 
"A lot of tech companies like Infosys and Syntel have their healthcare vertical headquartered here, so there is a lot of talent available," Joshi told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/pune-is-new-hub-for-health-tech-startups/articleshow/53201409.cms">ET</a>. "Also institutes like Symbiosis Institute of Health Sciences and Ashtang Ayurveda ensure access to experts with domain knowledge and expertise." 
 
It was only last month that Govin Capital, headquartered in Singapore, announced a health-tech accelerator in Pune, with its CEO Anand Govindaluri saying, "Pune has the best start-up ecosystem because of the natural presence of good medical, engineering and management schools. There is a natural flow of talent that is automatically attracted to Pune, and so identifying management teams for start-ups with diverse backgrounds is also easier." 
 Pune has seen a lot of <keyword id="3492724" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health-tech-start-ups">health-tech start-ups</keyword> rising in the past few years, with companies like Medsonway, which delivers medicines, Docplexus, a doctor's network, Allizhealth, which lets you store your health data, and Medifee, which provides pricing information on tests and hospital procedures, all being founded here. 
 
"There is a lot of noise in other cities; we wanted to do our groundwork and Pune provided the best environment to do that and stay under the radar. Pune lacks investor attention, but its better this way - it helps companies focus on the basics and bootstrap. Investors will get involved only when they really want to invest," said Abhijit Gupta, CEO of Praxify Technologies. 
 
However, Anurav Rane, CEO of Planmymedicaltrip.com, a medical tourism portal, says that the lack of access to investors is a major problem when it comes to Pune. 
 
"Pune is a technology hub but the start-up ecosystem needs to improve. What works for it, however, are factors like proximity to Mumbai, and for us, a large out of-town population of students and professionals, which helps create demand for our services," he said. 
 
Abhimanyu Bhosale, CEO of Live Health, is of the opinion that along with easy access to talent because of the educational and tech presence that Pune offers, several other factors like the quality of life and cost of living also make Pune substantial. 
 
"The high cost of talent in other cities like Bengaluru can make it difficult to find the right people if you are a start-up. Though Pune lacks investor support, it's not as commercialised, making it easier to manage the cost of operations, management and travel," he added.

In an interview to <keyword id="6373044" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="forbes" source="Orion">Forbes</keyword>, she had said that she migrated to US to have a career in technology. Narkhede, after her education, joined Oracle and then LinkedIn where she and her colleagues <keyword id="15048937" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jun-rao" source="Orion">Jun Rao</keyword> and Jay Kreps set up open source platform Apache Kafka. In 2014, the trio decided to start Confluent with Narkhede as the Chief Technology Officer and later as the Chief Product Officer. She is now on the company's board. The company went public in 2021 at $9.1 billion valuation, as per Forbes. The Pune girl who self-made it to the India rich list

With an aim to build the world's largest customer data platform (CDP), Bharti <keyword id="15491" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="airtel" source="Orion">Airtel</keyword> on Tuesday said it has acquired a strategic stake in Lemnisk (Immensitas Private Limited) under its 'Start Up Accelerator Programme for an undisclosed sum. Bengaluru-based Lemnisk offers real-time marketing automation and secure CDP, capable of providing 1-to-1 personalisation and cross-channel customer journeys at a scale that increases conversions, retention, and growth for enterprises. "Lemnisk's real-time marketing automation engine is a natural fit for us, where over 350 million customers interact with brands daily through multiple touch points," said Adarsh Nair, CEO of Airtel <keyword id="50691" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="digital" source="Orion">Digital</keyword>. They will work together to build the world's largest CDP platform across Airtel's digital businesses including ad tech (Airtel Ads), digital entertainment (Wynk Music and Airtel Xstream) and digital marketplace (Airtel Thanks App). In future, Airtel plans to offer this service to its enterprise customers through Airtel IQ, which is the network-integrated <keyword id="1057264" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="cloud-platform" source="Orion">Cloud Platform</keyword> as a Service (CPaaS). The platform will offer enterprises an opportunity to create a nimble, scalable, and omnichannel engagement for its customers said the company. "Airtel's ambition aligns with our vision to offer a single frictionless platform to super large enterprises that both organizes and activates high volume and high-velocity data. The Airtel Startup Accelerator Programme invests in early-stage startups working on technologies that add strategic value to Airtel's business offerings.
