Pune, May 4 () A day after the civic administrationgave relaxations in lockdown norms in non-containment zones inthe city, Mayor Murlidhar Mohol on Monday expressed hisdisapproval of the decision and expressed concern overcrowding on roads here.Mohol said he has spoken to Maharashtra deputy chiefminister Ajit Pawar and asked him to intervene in the matter.Pawar is also the guardian minister of Pune district.On Sunday evening, civic commissioner Shekhar Gaikwadissued orders for certain relaxations in lockdown rules innon-containment zones in the city, the second worst-hit bycoronavirus in the state after Mumbai.Gaikwad on Monday sought to allay concerns related tothe relaxations and said they will be reviewed regularly.As per the orders, shops selling non-essentialcommodities, including liquor, will be allowed to be opened innon-containment zones between 10 am and 6 pm.Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Mohol stated,"I register my protest to the decision to allow five shopsincluding essential commodities to remain open on a particularroad or lane between 10 am to 6 pm."He said when people are following the lockdown andthere is a possibility that the number of COVID-19 cases mightcome under control, this decision will not be "affordable" forthe city.He stated that since the morning crowding of people oncity roads is worrisome."I demand that only essential services that toobetween 10 am and 2 pm be allowed in the whole city. With newtimings (10 am to 6 pm ) how are we going to control crowdsand it will further bring stress on the police department," hetweeted.Mohol questioned the decision to allow only five shopsin one lane or road to remain open and sought to know thecriterion to select these shops."By giving such relaxations in Pune in the currenttimes, we are actually inviting more danger," he said.He said the administration should pay heed to theseconcerns and rethink over its decision and only allow shopsselling essential commodities to remain open from 10 am to 2pm."I have spoken to the guardian minister Ajit Pawar andhe has responded positively and I expect that he willintervene in this issue," Mohol tweeted.Meanwhile, civic chief Gaikwad, replying to a questionrelated to crowding on roads since Monday morning, said allwill have to adapt to certain changes."This (COVID-19) situation will be with us for thenext few months and in that condition, continuous lockdown isnot possible."In fact, we will have to adopt certain changes in ourlifestyles such as wearing masks, gloves and following socialdistancing norms all the times," he said.Gaikwad said the relaxations will be reviewed afterevery four days."We will be taking a constant review of therelaxations given in non-containment zones and we will checkthe public response."If there is an increase or decrease in COVID-19cases in a particular area, we will do necessary changes inin terms of putting more restrictions or giving morerelaxations," he added.The number of areas falling under COVID-19 containmentzones in Pune has reduced, he said."As per the revised containment zones, out of 330 sqkm area, only 3 per cent of it is currently under containmentzones," he said.In the remaining 97 per cent area, normalcy willgradually return from Monday onwards in terms of dailybusiness. Pune mayor disapproves of lockdown relaxations

Mohol said he raised the issue during his meeting with Chief Minister <keyword id="53973" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uddhav-Thackeray">Uddhav Thackeray</keyword> on Thursday, when the latter was in the city to take stock of the coronavirus situation. "As per the guidelines, no test is conducted on a deceased. But when the doctors take the X-ray of these people, they show symptoms of COVID-19," Mohol claimed. He said that while raising the issue with the CM, he sought steps to stop such deaths. "Early tracing of patients should be done so that they can be given timely treatment and such deaths can be stopped," he added. Following the allegations, Collector Naval Kishore Ram said an inquiry will be conducted into it and a report has been sought from Sassoon hospital. "The staff of the district administration keeps visiting Sassoon hospital and goes through the records. It is unlikely that there is any misreporting or under-reporting in Pune," he said. "There might be some issues related to data entry. But the figure mentioned by the honourable mayor looks impossible. But we will conduct a fair inquiry as I have sought a report from Sassoon," the collector added. Pune Mayor alleges 400 unaccounted suspected COVID-19 deaths

Pune, Jul 5 () Seven members from Pune Mayor Muralidhar Mohol's family have tested positive for novel coronavirus, municipal commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad confirmed on Sunday. Mohol had already tested positive for the viral infection. Meanwhile, former BJP MLA from Hadapsar in Pune, Yogesh Tilekar has twitted that he had tested positive for coronavirus and that his condition is stable. Mohol had twitted that he underwent a test after suffering from mild fever and found that he had contracted the virus. His condition was stable and he was undergoing treatment, the mayor had stated. According to Thursday's figures, there was one death roughly every 5 minutes and a staggering 480 new cases every hour. The state's recovery rate increased marginally from 65.25 per cent to 65.94 per cent on Thursday, while the current mortality rate stood stable at 3.50 per cent. The Health Department said that of the total cases till date, 146,305 are active. A total of 10,854 recovered patients have returned home, taking the total number of discharged patients to 316,375. Of Thursday's deaths, Pune notched the highest, at 62, followed by Mumbai's 57, and Thane's 56 deaths. As Mumbai deaths again crossed the 50-plus range, the city's toll rose to 6,648 and the number of cases increased by 910 to 120,150. There were also 18 deaths in Nagpur, 15 in Solapur, 13 each in Nashik, Jalgaon and Kolhapur, 10 in Palghar, seven each in Aurangabad, Parbhani, and Amravati, six in Latur, five each in Raigad, Ahmednagar, Sangli, and Nanded, three in Buldhana, two each in Dhule, Satara, and Yavatmal, and one each in Nandurbar, Ratnagiri, and Akola. According to railway sources, suburban services were stopped due to water-logging on tracks at Palghar station. Thakur, however, said despite heavy rains in various suburbs, the Western Railways suburban services were running normal between Churchgate and Dahanu Road. On the central line, there was water-logging on tracks in Sion and <keyword id="9704955" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="kurla-areas">Kurla areas</keyword> and trains were running with some delays, sources said. Central Railway's chief spokesperson <keyword id="8859" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shivaji">Shivaji</keyword> Sutar said their suburban services, from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Kasara (Thane), Khopoli (Raigad), Panvel (Navi Mumbai) and Goregaon, were running despite the heavy showers. Both the Central Railway and Western Railway are operating nearly 350 special train services each daily for those working in essential and emergency services. Bus services of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), the city civic body's transport wing, were also affected due to water-logging on some roads. A BEST spokesperson said their services were diverted on more than 30 routes, including two locations in Thane district, till 9 am. The weather station at Dahanu in Palghar recorded 364 mm rainfall in the 12-hour period ending at 5.30 am on Wednesday, IMD Mumbai centre's deputy director general K S Hosalikar said. Besides, the weather station at Bhayander in Thane recorded 169 mm rainfall while the one at Mira Road reported 159 mm during the same period, he said. As per IMD's website, Thane city, Dombivli and Kalyan areas, which are part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), received more than 120 mm rainfall during the same period. "The cloud activity indicates that there would be one more intense rainfall day on Wednesday, Hosalikar tweeted. "Heavy to very heavy with isolated extremely heavy rains possible in next 24 over entire Konkan region. In North Konkan the impact could be more including Thane, Mumbai and Palghar, he said. It has brought heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in and around Mumbai, Hosalikar said. Since Tuesday night, the western suburbs here received 82.43 mm rain, followed by eastern suburbs-69.11 mm and the island city-45.38 mm, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said. The Pune district also received 59 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours and it is likely to witness moderate to isolated heavy showers in next two days, an IMD official said. The catchment areas of four dams - Varasgaon, Khadakwasla, Panshet and Temghar which provide water to the city - received good rainfall. Pune Mayor Murlidhar Mohol said since good rainfall is predicted by the IMD, the city is not likely to face any water cuts till the Ganesh festival, which begins on August 22. Despite Brexit and the coronavirus pandemic, London maintained its second-place ranking tied with New York for the second year in a row. Bangalore also ranked in the top 30 global tech hubs (#23 globally) and Delhi made it into the top 40 list, coming in at 36th. Mumbai maintained its first position in the Emerging Ecosystems ranking (ecosystems in earlier stages of growth that have high potential to be global performers in the future), outperforming other fast-growing ecosystems in areas of funding, performance, market research and talent. Released to coincide with London Tech Week, the largest tech event in Europe, the report ranks the leading 140 startup ecosystems based on seven success factors including Performance, Talent and Connectedness. The findings revealed that London is the most attractive destination to set up a tech startup outside of Silicon Valley, with an overall ecosystem value of 142.7bn. London has risen up the league table in the last few years, climbing from number eight in 2012 when the first rankings were released to number two in 2020. Silicon Valley held onto the top spot this year while Beijing and Boston came in fourth and fifth respectively. The research shows that Indian startups raised 12.1 billion in the first half of this year, demonstrating the rapid growth of India as a global hub for tech and innovation. As of August 2021, India has produced 24 unicorns in 2021, including 6 in just 4 days in April. The city of Bengaluru and the surrounding state of Karnataka is also the world's 4th largest technology and innovation cluster and home to more than 400+ global R&amp;D centres. Alongside Mumbai, a number of other Indian hubs made it into the Top 100 Emerging Ecosystems' list, including Chennai, Pune and Hyderabad. The findings also revealed London is one of the best cities in the world for access to funding and quality and activity in the investment ecosystem (referring to the number of local investors, investor experience and their level of activity). London has already seen record levels of VC tech investment this year, with the UK capital's tech startups receiving 13.3bn in the first seven months (January to July), more than the 10.9bn raised in the whole of 2020. London's impressive start to 2021 has been boosted by major funding rounds for Revolut (800m), Checkout.com 450m) and Hopin (400m). Bangalore's ranking was also boosted by healthy access to growth capital, demonstrated by recent large funding rounds from food delivery platform Swiggy (1.3bn), social media company ShareChat (502m) and edtech firm Byju (460m). Compared with other international tech hubs, the research found that startups in London have access to deeper pools of capital, with an average seed round of 653k, ahead of the global average of 494k. London is currently home to over 1,370 VC firms - more than any other European city, providing access to a vast network of investors and a depth of capital in the ecosystem. A number of global investment firms have also increased their presence in London recently, with Index Ventures announcing a 3.1bn fund for European start-ups in July and the news that Silicon Valley based VC Sequoia Capital had expanded its footprint in the UK capital. London is also recognised for its world class talent pool, with the city ranking highly across the board for quality and access to Tech and Life Sciences talent. With four of the world's top ten universities located in or close to London, the city is home to 484k software developers as well as a high number of Life Sciences-focused universities and degree programmes. At the time, Indonesia was the world's <a href="https://theconversation.com/how-can-indonesia-win-against-plastic-pollution-80966">second-largest contributor</a> to marine plastic pollution, prompting the nation to <a href="https://oceanconference.un.org/commitments/?id=14387">set a goal</a> of reducing waste in the ocean by 70% by 2025. Dow offered technical advice on how to turn the country's plastic into roads.Shortly after, the company helped two Indian cities, Bangalore and Pune, develop roads from more than 100 tons of recycled plastic. In July, Dow <a href="https://th.dow.com/en-us/news/press-releases/the-dow-chemical-company-and-scg-turn-recycled-plastics-into-roads-in-thailand">carried out similar efforts</a> in Thailand, the world's <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Economy/Thailand-falling-behind-in-global-battle-with-plastic-waste">sixth biggest contributor</a> to ocean waste. In addition to reducing pollution, plastic roads have a number of advantages over traditional asphalt. Road experts say they're <a href="https://www.economist.com/science-and-technology/2018/09/13/road-makers-turn-to-recycled-plastic-for-tougher-surfaces">more resistant to corrosion</a> from weather or vehicles. Because of this, plastic roads might reduce the cases of <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/laurenfix/2018/04/16/pothole-dangers-drivers-beware/">dangerous potholes</a> or <a href="https://www.npr.org/2013/11/29/247825768/phantom-traffic-jams-what-causes-mysterious-highway-backups">traffic jams</a>.In 2015, the Dutch construction company VolkerWessels estimated that recycled plastic roads could last at least 50 years, or around <a href="https://en.volkerwessels.com/dynamics/modules/SFIL0200/view.php?fil_Id=353074">three times longer</a> than conventional roads. Dow's global sustainability leader, Jeff Wooster, said regulations for US roads tend to be stricter than in Asia-Pacific and often vary based on region. "Right now we're focused on using projects like this to increase awareness that plastic roads are a viable option," he told Business Insider.Some environmentalists also fear that heating plastic to make roads could release toxic chemicals into the atmosphere. (The researcher who discovered the solution to combine plastic and asphalt <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2018/jul/09/the-man-who-paves-indias-roads-with-old-plastic">recently claimed</a> that it only poses a harm at temperatures above 518 degrees Fahrenheit.)But melting down plastic to <a href="https://www.recyclingtoday.com/article/recycling-technologies-plastics-landfill-diversion/">convert it to new uses</a> is part of a wider trend. Wooster told Business Insider that consumers are eager for Dow - and the rest of the plastic industry - to repurpose plastic waste.
