Chugging Out To Sea: Five Coast-hugging Train Rides Along Indian Shores

Thiruvananthapuram, Incessant <keyword id="6385438" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Heavy-rains" source="Orion">heavy rains</keyword>, accompanied by thunder and lightning, continued to batter many districts of Kerala on Thursday, prompting authorities to urge people to exercise extra vigil in high ranges and low-lying areas there. As hilly areas witnessed landslides and mudslides in Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts, intense waterlogging affected the normal life of people in several places, cutting across villages and towns. Continuous rains flooded several low-lying areas of Thiruvananthapuram, disrupting normal life and creating <keyword id="44874" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="traffic-snarls" source="Orion">traffic snarls</keyword>. The water level in the canals of Parvathi Puthanar and Amayizhanchan Thodu, criss-crossing through the heart of the capital city, rose, causing concern among local residents and authorities. Quoting weather reports, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the rain is likely to continue under the influence of the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal. Many areas of the state received intense rains on Wednesday night and continuous downpours are expected today and tomorrow afternoons, he said while addressing a press conference on the sidelines of the Nava Kerala Sadas in Wayanad, an outreach programme of the state government. The water level in major rivers in Pathanamthitta, where a red alert was sounded by the India Meteorological Department, was rising due to continuous rains, authorities said. A red alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rains of over 20 cm in 24 hours. In the wake of heavy rains in the district, Devaswom Minister K Radhakrishnan directed the district collector and the district police chief to monitor the security arrangements for Sabarimala pilgrims. <keyword id="765174" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Heavy-waterlogging" source="Orion">Heavy waterlogging</keyword> was reported on the Pathanamthitta-Thiruvalla and Punalur-Muvattupuzha roads. Widespread destruction of agriculture and damage to properties were reported in the Thiruvalla and Konni areas and traffic was disrupted on Kumali-Munnar road as uprooted trees blocked vehicles. The hilly areas of Nedumangadu and Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram also witnessed heavy rains. The shutters of Kallarkutty and Pambla dams in Idukki districts were raised in the morning due to increased water levels following heavy rains in their catchment areas. In the wake of the raising of the shutters in the dams, the Idukki district collector urged people living on the shores of the Periyar and Muthirapuzhayar rivers to exercise extra vigil. The collector also directed officials concerned to take necessary precautionary measures to ensure the safety of local residents in case of any emergency. Detailing various measures taken by the government, Vijayan said one relief camp each was opened in Thiruvananthapuram and Pathanamthitta districts and 38 people have been shifted to safer places in Kollam. Waterlogging and crop destruction were reported in Thrissur and Pathanamthitta districts respectively, he said. As many as 15 places have received more than 100 mm of rain in the last eight hours, the chief minister detailed. The Sabarimala pilgrimage is progressing smoothly and directions have been issued to pay special vigil in the areas connected to the annual event. No major dams have been opened in the state and only small reservoirs in Idukki and Thiruvananthapuram have been opened so far, he said. Vijayan said though the water level in Mullaperiyar Dam rose to 135 ft, there is no dangerous situation as of now. In addition to district emergency centres, taluk emergency centres were also directed to be made operational in the state, he said. An online meeting, chaired by state Revenue Minister K Rajan , took stock of the situation prevailing in the state in the morning, the chief minister added.

While 670 people are under treatment for the infection in various hospitals, 590 have been treated and discharged, including 10 who have recovered today, a press release from the Health Minister K K Shailaja said. Palakkad reported the highest number of 12 cases, Kasaragod (10), Kannur (seven), Kollam, Alappuzha (six), Thiruvananthapuram, Pathnamthitta (four), Thrissur, Malappuram, Wayanad (three), Kozhikode (two) and Ernakulam (one). Four cases, two each from Palakkad and Kollam districts, have been infected through contact. So far 1,31,651 people have entered the state, including 19,662 through airports and over one lakh through checkposts. Also, in the state 1,34,654 people are under observation in various districts, of whom 1,33,413 people are in home/institutional quarantine and 1,241 in hospitals, including 208 admitted today. In the last 24 hours, 3,099 samples have been sent for testing. So far, samples of 67,371 people have been sent for testing and results of 64,093 available are negative, the release added. The total number of hotspots in the state has gone up to 116 with the addition of 10 more areas including Puthunagaram in Palakkad, Thalassery Municipality in Kannur and Punalur in Kollam. Kozhikode/Thiruvananthapuram, May 31 () A 53-year old woman, who returned from Riyadh recently succumbed to the COVID-19 infection at Kozhikode Medical College hospital on Sunday, taking the total fatalities in the state due to the virus to 10. State Health Secretary Rajan Khobragade said the woman had heart-related ailmentsand tested positive on arrival. "She was tested positive and was suffering from heart-related ailments but she passed away Sunday night," Khobragade told P T I. This is the tenth COVID-19-related death in Kerala while 61 new cases were reported on Sunday in the state after which the tally touched 1,269. Due to the nationwide lockdown, the couple could not find any public vehicle to travel to the hospital, and many of the medical institutions nearby were shut. “Soon after the delivery, the woman became unconscious. The father thought the child had died and wrapped it in a paper for about 20 minutes. By then, I and my husband, Dr Himanish, a physician, arrived at the clinic. We found the baby alive. We began treating the baby as well as the mother. After they recovered, they were shifted to <keyword id="597629" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="KC-General-Hospital">KC General Hospital</keyword> in <keyword id="64476" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Malleswaram">Malleswaram</keyword>. Bengaluru dental clinic turns labour ward for a pregnant migrant labourer who walked 7 kms to deliver premature

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 8 () The day-long strike called by central trade unions was total in Left-ruled Kerala on Wednesday, with vehicles, including state-owned KSRTC and private buses keeping off the roads.
 In the state capital, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) did not operate city and long distance services.
 Very few private vehicles and autorickshaws were seen plying on roads.
 As Sabarimala pilgrims have been exempted from the strike, KSRTC buses are taking Ayyappa devotees to Pamba.
 With trade unions of the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF and opposition Congress-headed UDF participating in the strike, most of the staff did not turn up at the Secretariat.
 Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and other ministers also did not attend office.
 The weekly state cabinet meeting scheduled for Wednesday had been held a day earlier.
 Police have made arrangements to ensure that there are no untoward incidents and 160 police pickets have been set up at various junctions in the city.
 Railway sources said train services were unaffected by the strike called by various trade unions and there were no protests at railway stations.
 However, passengers who reached the railway station here this morning had a tough time getting vehicles.
 Police vehicles were arranged to take patients coming for treatment at the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC), Medical College Hospital and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences.
 Initial reports said some Sabarimala pilgrims from Tamil Nadu had to wait for over two hours in Punalur in Kollam to get KSRTC buses for Pamba.
 Shops and business establishments were also shut across the state despite the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi, an organisation of traders, stating that they would remain open.
 The Mahatma Gandhi, Kerala and Kannur universities have postponed various examinations scheduled for Wednesday.
 The central trade unions are protesting against labour reforms, FDI, disinvestment, corporatisation and privatisation policies of the government. They are pressing for a 12-point charter of demands of the working class relating to minimum wage and social security, among others.
 This is the second shutdown within a month in Kerala.
