The IMD said that Cyclone Fengal is being continuously monitored by the weather department from the Doppler weather radars at Chennai (S band), Sriharikota, and Chennai (X band) in addition to the satellite observations. According to the IMD, the cyclone will hit the coastal areas of north Tamil Nadu today evening and a red alert was issued yesterday for various parts of southern states including south Andhra Pradesh coasts. In view of cyclone, Multiple airlines issued travel advisories and updates on their flight services due to heavy rains in Chennai. Authorities have alerted and advised the fishermen not to venture into the sea due to the high waves and turbulent conditions. And certain weather models predict the birth to a powerful cyclone that could impact coastal regions, including Chennai. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said "Severe Cyclonic Storm "MICHAUNG" over Westcentral Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts moved northwards with a speed of 07 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of today, the 5th December 2023 over Westcentral Bay of Bengal off south Andhra Pradesh coast near Latitude14.9°N and Longitude 80.2°E, about 20 km east of Kavali, 50 km north-northeast of Nellore, 200 km north of Chennai, 110 km south-southwest of Bapatla and 170km south-southwest of Machilipatnam." It further said that <keyword id="19716567" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyclone-michaung" source="Orion">Cyclone 'Michaung'</keyword> is likely to cross south Andhra Pradesh during the forenoon of December 5 with a maximum wind speed of 90-100 Kmph. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke on Monday to the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over cyclone 'Michaung' and assured all possible support from the Central government. In separate telephonic conversations with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, the Home Minister took stock of the situation in these states about relief and rescue measures as well as other steps to ensure no loss of lives and minimise the damage from the impending cyclone. Puducherry is expected to be 'severely impacted' by the cyclone and there was a <keyword id="2358452" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="grave-danger">grave danger</keyword> to life, health and safety of the public because of the cyclone predicted. Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], December 5 (ANI): The Chennai Meteorological Centre forecast moderate rainfall, light thunderstorms and lightning in ten districts of Tamil Nadu for Tuesday morning. "Light thunderstorm and lightning with moderate rain are very likely over Chennai, Tiruvallur, <keyword id="747320" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="chengalpattu" source="Orion">Chengalpattu</keyword>, <keyword id="6356822" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kancheepuram" source="Orion">Kancheepuram</keyword>, <keyword id="257016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ranipet" source="Orion">Ranipet</keyword> and <keyword id="19716594" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vellore-districts" source="Orion">Vellore districts</keyword> of Tamil Nadu. Cyclone Michaung, which lay centred over the west coast of the Bay of Bengal, off south Andhra Pradesh and adjoining north Tamil Nadu coasts, is likely to cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam on Tuesday morning in the form of a severe cyclonic storm, the weather department informed. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin made inquiries on Monday on the damage wrought by the heavy showers amid the approaching cyclone while also taking stock of the ongoing relief and rescue operations and the state's preparedness to deal with the immediate aftermath of the storm. The CM also inquired about the food and other facilities provided to civilians sheltered in relief camps during a phone call to state ministers Sekar Babu, KN Nehru, and EV Velu and DMK MLAs Dr Ezhilan, Karunanidhi, E Parandaman and S Arvind Ramesh. The progress of the cyclone is being tracked closely and its potential impact assessed, police said on Monday, adding that the approaching storm has already claimed five lives and injured one in separate incidents across Chennai. Several areas, including Wallajah Road, Mount Road, Anna Salai, Chepauk, outside Omandurar government multispecialty hospital and other low-lying areas, were inundated due to persistent heavy rainfall. Chennai's popular Marina Beach was flooded in the wake of the downpours, while roads linking Mount Road to Marina Beach were blocked due to severe waterlogging.
