<ul><li>Five states voted on some form of change to the minimum wage in Tuesday's US elections.</li><li>Missouri approved a raise, while Massachusetts and Arizona rejected changing how tipped workers are paid.</li><li>Results in Alaska and California were unclear early Wednesday.</li></ul>While economic issues were a major focus of this year's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/election-results-trump-harris-presidential-election-2024-11" target="_blank">US presidential election</a>, several states put pay directly on the ballot, and minimum-wage workers in at least one state are now set to get a raise after voting concluded Tuesday. Missouri, Massachusetts, California, and Alaska all had some form of referendum on their ballots on whether to hike the minimum wage paid by employers. In Massachusetts, voters were asked whether to gradually increase the share of tipped workers' pay that employers must provide, while voters in the three other states were presented with proposals for straightforward minimum-wage increases. In Arizona, voters weighed in on whether to decrease the tipped minimum wage — provided employers could show workers' wages would stay $2 above the state minimum when accounting for tips. Shortly after polls closed in Missouri, it was clear that the referendum there had passed. Voters in Massachusetts and Arizona rejected their proposals, and California and Alaska were still awaiting their results as of early Wednesday. <h2 style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Missouri</h2>In Missouri, voters opted to raise the state's minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2026. Per The New York Times, roughly 58% of Missouri voters had supported the measure as of early Wednesday, with some votes still uncounted. The measure, <a href="https://www.sos.mo.gov/elections/petitions/2024BallotMeasures#:~:text=Official%20Ballot%20Title%0AProposition,Proposed%20by%20Initiative%20Petition" target="_blank">Proposition A</a>, is set to first raise the minimum wage to $13.75 an hour from $12.30 on January 1 and then increase it again to $15 an hour on January 1, 2026. Starting in 2027, the wage is set to be pegged to inflation. The measure also mandates that employers give their workers an hour of paid leave for every 30 hours they work. Missouri separately voted in favor of former President Donald Trump, who said he'd "consider" a minimum-wage hike if it proved beneficial for small businesses. His opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, had pledged support for raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour from $7.25. A group of Missouri business owners in favor of the measure praised Proposition A's passage on Tuesday evening. "Proposition A will strengthen Missouri's workforce and businesses," David Burmeister, the owner of Midwest Pasta Co. in St. Louis, said in a press release. "Raising the minimum wage will increase people's ability to shop at our business and local businesses across Missouri. We've seen that paying better wages is better business. Employees are happier at work and do a better job." <h2 style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Massachusetts</h2>In <a href="https://www.sec.state.ma.us/divisions/elections/publications/information-for-voters-24/quest_5.htm" target="_blank">Massachusetts</a>, employers won't be required to gradually raise tipped workers' base pay to match the state's minimum wage. The measure failed, with the Times reporting at the time of publication that 64% of voters had rejected it out of the votes counted so far. The measure, which would have begun taking shape on January 1, wouldn't have actually raised the legal minimum wage for tipped workers but instead would have raised the share of that minimum wage that employers were required to provide. Currently, Massachusetts employers are required to pay tipped workers a base pay of $6.75 an hour and then make up the difference if those workers' total pay counting tips is less than $15 an hour. The failed measure would have ultimately required employers to directly pay tipped workers the state's full minimum wage by 2029. <h2 style="color: rgb(34, 34, 34); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Arizona</h2>In Arizona, voters rejected a measure that would have let employers reduce their base pay for tipped workers. <a href="https://www.azleg.gov/alispdfs/Council/2024BallotMeasures/adopted%20analysis%20Proposition%20138%20SCR1040%20-%202024.pdf" target="_blank">Proposition 138</a> proposed allowing employers to pay tipped workers up to 25% less than the state's minimum wage, with the corollary that employers would need to establish their workers were still making the minimum wage plus an additional $2 an hour when accounting for tips. The Times reported that out of the votes counted so far, nearly 76% of voters had rejected the measure. That means that employers in Arizona can continue to pay their tipped workers $3 less than the current hourly minimum wage as long as workers are still making at least the minimum wage when accounting for tips. Correction: November 7, 2024 — An earlier version of this story included a sentence that incorrectly described the result of the ballot measure in Massachusetts. The system in which tipped workers are required to be paid at least $15 an hour through a combination of tips and a $6.75 hourly wage is the current system in Massachusetts, not a proposal on the ballot measure that voters rejected. The story was also updated to clarify the ballot results. The percentages attributed to The New York Times reflected the latest tally as votes were being counted, not New York Times projections for the final result. The specific figure of 76% in Arizona referred to the share of voters at the time who had rejected the ballot measure there, not the margin by which voters rejected the measure.

Workers in Missouri can look forward to raises after minimum-wage boosts passed

In 2017, Missouri Republicans passed legislation to ban compulsory union fees for workers who choose not to join, which would've severely limited the influence of the organized labor movement. Former Gov. Eric Greitens signed the bill into law, but union organizers started a petition to stall its implementation, ultimately gathering enough signatures for the law to be put on hold pending a statewide referendum.In the end, on Proposition A, roughly 67% voted against the keeping the law, while 33% voted in favor of it.Supporters of right-to-work laws say workers shouldn't be forced to join unions and pay membership fees. But opponents contend these fees are necessary to protect worker's rights, especially given that federal law requires unions to represent all employees - even those who opt out of joining unions. Twenty-seven states have laws permitting workers in unionized settings to choose not to join and pay membership fees. Missouri voters blocked the state's 'right-to-work' law in perhaps the biggest electoral stunner of the night

<div class="image-container float_right" style="width:400px"><div class="image"></div>Courtesy of MSNBC</div>A flood of Congressional Democrats have come out in support of <keyword id="21192" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Gay-marriage">gay marriage</keyword> ahead of <keyword id="6354977" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Supreme-Court">Supreme Court</keyword> arguments on two major cases Tuesday and Wednesday. 
The latest was perhaps the most significant, as Alaska Sen. Mark Begich said in a statement Monday night that he now supported same-sex marriage.
"Gay and lesbian couples should not be denied the ability to pledge their love and commitment through the civil institution of marriage," <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/chrisgeidner/alaska-sen-mark-begich-says-same-sex-couples-should-be-able" target="_blank">Begich said, according to BuzzFeed</a>. "I believe that two committed adults of the same sex should be able to receive a government-issued marriage license, while religious institutions retain their right to determine which marriages they will perform."
As a red-state Democrat up for re-election in 2014, Begich's turn marks the most meaningful political reversal in a Congressional group that also includes Missouri Sen. <keyword id="259469" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Claire-McCaskill">Claire McCaskill</keyword> and Virginia Sen. <keyword id="250652" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Mark-Warner">Mark Warner</keyword>. 
Warner made his announcement on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/MarkRWarner/posts/10151583789527853" target="_blank">his official Facebook page Monday</a>.
"I support marriage equality because it is the fair and right thing to do. Like many Virginians and Americans, my views on gay marriage have evolved, and this is the inevitable extension of my efforts to promote equality and opportunity for everyone," Warner said.
McCaskill, meanwhile, took an unconventional approach by <a href="http://clairecmc.tumblr.com/post/46209857472/and-now-abide-faith-hope-love-these-three-but-the#_=_" target="_blank">announcing her shift on her Tumblr</a>. It was a significant "evolution" from her position during a high-profile campaign in Missouri, when she said that the issue should be left up to individual states.
"My views on this subject have changed over time, but as many of my gay and lesbian friends, colleagues and staff embrace long term committed relationships, I find myself unable to look them in the eye without honestly confronting this uncomfortable inequality," McCaskill said in the statement. 
"Supporting marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples is simply the right thing to do for our country, a country founded on the principals of liberty and equality. Good people disagree with me. On the other hand, my children have a hard time understanding why this is even controversial. I think history will agree with my children."
Other prominent present and former politicians have in recent weeks announced their support for same-sex marriage, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hillary-clinton-gay-marriage-support-2016-2013-3" target="_blank">including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton</a>. And just more than a week ago, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/rob-portman-gay-marriage-support-son-2013-3" target="_blank">became the first sitting Republican Senator to endorse gay marriage</a>.

Democrats Are Rushing To 'Evolve' On Gay Marriage Before Supreme Court Arguments Today

Greg Abbott is pushing for the state to become a <keyword id="11086543" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="second-amendment-sanctuary">Second Amendment sanctuary</keyword>.</li><li><keyword id="295766" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Second-Amendment">Second Amendment</keyword> sanctuaries ignore federal or state gun laws they consider restrictive.</li><li>In recent years they've become a tactic among <keyword id="2391523" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Gun-rights">gun rights</keyword> advocates to push back against federal restrictions.</li></ul>On Thursday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott <a href="https://twitter.com/GregAbbott_TX/status/1380200140439498754">tweeted in support of gun rights</a> just hours before a deadly mass shooting in Bryan, Texas. The shooting - the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/texas-gov-abbott-tweets-gun-rights-support-before-mass-shooting-2021-4">state's 14th</a> so far this year - left <a href="https://www.insider.com/police-responded-to-shooting-bryan-texas-2021-4">one dead and five injured</a> and came at a particularly inopportune moment. Abbott is in the midst of a campaign to turn Texas into a Second Amendment sanctuary state - a state where federal gun restrictions would be ignored in favor of local laws more favorable to gun rights. The <a href="https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/87R/billtext/pdf/HB02622I.pdf#navpanes=0">legislation</a> to make Texas a sanctuary state was introduced in February by Texas State Rep. Justin Holland. If passed, Texas will join Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Wyoming, and <a href="https://www.azmirror.com/blog/gun-control-advocates-urge-ducey-to-veto-gun-sanctuary-bill/">Arizona,</a> along with around 400 counties in 20 states, that have also designated themselves as gun rights sanctuaries.The push to make Texas a Second Amendment sanctuary comes amid <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/04/07/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-initial-actions-to-address-the-gun-violence-public-health-epidemic/#:~:text=Red%20flag%20laws%20allow%20family,danger%20to%20themselves%20or%20others.">several executive orders</a> from President Joe Biden calling for increased gun control measures, including a push for "red flag" legislation modeling, an investment in evidence-based community interventions, and measures to stop the proliferation of "ghost <keyword id="6371465" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="guns">guns</keyword>" - guns made out of purchased parts that are untraceable by authorities. "Basically, we're freezing Texas state law and federal laws in place that have to do with guns," Holland told The <a href="https://www.elpasotimes.com/story/news/2021/04/09/what-would-happen-if-texas-became-second-amendment-sanctuary-state/7146515002/">El Paso Times</a>. "And (we're) not recognizing, at the state level, any federal changes."<h2>What are Second Amendment sanctuaries?</h2>Second Amendment sanctuaries are meant to combat the perceived infringement of gun rights in a variety of forms. Cities, counties, and states alike can and have declared themselves second amendment sanctuaries in the US.Those infringements might include laws requiring universal background checks prior to gun purchase, or bans on particular weaponry, including assault and automatic weapons, or red flag laws that allow law enforcement or family members to "flag" that a person with a gun may be a danger to themselves or others.<div type="image" title="Worker inspects AR-15 gun in Utah" height="3449" width="4598" msid="82029791" hostid="261"></div>The trend of Second Amendment sanctuary cities and states began in earnest in 2018, when Effingham County, Illinois, passed a <a href="https://www.effinghamdailynews.com/news/local_news/effingham-countys-gun-sanctuary-resolution/article_8e910fe6-3c89-5517-8427-7349129f8402.html">series of resolutions</a> opposing bump stock bans and a mandatory 72-hour waiting period on gun purchases, along with a litany of other gun control measures. Since then, more than 70 counties in Illinois have passed some kind of Second Amendment sanctuary legislation, <a href="https://www.thetrace.org/2020/01/second-amendment-sanctuary-movement/">The Trace</a> reported. In 2019, more than <a href="https://www.thetrace.org/2020/01/second-amendment-sanctuary-movement/">120 cities and counties in Virginia</a> declared themselves gun rights sanctuaries, in backlash to a Democrat sweep in state elections. Last week, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey <a href="https://www.azleg.gov/ars/13/03108.htm">signed a bill</a> that bans local and state governments and agencies from enforcing federal gun laws that are "inconsistent with or more restrictive than state law."Ducey told reporters the law was meant to be "a proactive law for what is possible to come out of the Biden administration."<div type="image" title="black gun club" height="1000" width="1333" msid="82029792" hostid="261"></div><h2>'Renegade' sheriffs opt out of enforcing federal law</h2>Second Amendment sanctuaries often emerge from a refusal to enforce existing federal law. Often, that decision comes from so-called <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/04/30/the-renegade-sheriffs">"renegade"</a> sheriffs and police who simply choose not to recognize laws they feel step on gun owners' rights.They consider themselves "constitutional sheriffs" and believe, according to the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, that "the vertical separation of powers in the Constitution makes it clear that the power of the sheriff even supersedes the powers of the President."In Culpeper, Virginia, Sheriff Scott Jenkins went so far as to write on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/culpepersheriff/posts/3077554315592750">Facebook</a> that "if necessary," he would "properly screen and deputize thousands of our law-abiding citizens to protect their constitutional right to own firearms."Voters in Washington, Oregon, New Mexico, Virginia, and Illinois, among others, have all <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-guns-sanctuary-idUSKCN1QL0ZC">passed resolutions</a> in support of local sheriffs who believe federal gun laws are unconstitutional. <div type="image" title="church gun" height="3750" width="5000" msid="82029795" hostid="261"></div>Even where Second Amendment sanctuary isn't officially declared, some sheriffs have taken it upon themselves to buck federal gun laws.Bob Norris, the sheriff of Kootenai County, Idaho, told reporters last month he wouldn't enforce federal gun laws, regardless of whether the county voted to become a Second Amendment sanctuary or not. "They are policy statements. They don't empower localities to turn a blind eye to what is state law."Sanford V. Levinson, a constitutional law scholar at the University of Texas Law School, told Insider sanctuary declarations don't nullify existing federal laws, but they can make it difficult to enforce them - which is the point. "The laws are not invalid; it's simply that the national government will be left on its own re the mechanisms of enforcement," he said - which, given limited resources and budgets, means the federal government will often turn a blind eye. Should the government want to compel local authorities to enforce federal law, they'd likely run into problems because the Supreme Court has already ruled that the federal government can't <a href="https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/505/144/">"commandeer" state officials to enforce federal law</a>, Levinson said, citing <a href="https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/505/144/">New York vs. United States 505 US 144</a>. "It simply comes down to whether the federal government wants to make it a case. But if the national government is willing to pay the price, then it will prevail," he continued. "It's one thing for the sheriffs to say, 'We're not going to lift a finger to help you take guns away from our people,'" Tung Yin, a law professor at Lewis &amp; Clark Law School in Portland, told <a href="https://www.oregonlive.com/politics/2013/01/oregon_sheriffs_sending_a_mess.html">Oregon Live</a>. "That's OK. It's another thing for the sheriffs to say, 'Not only are we not going to lift a finger to help you, we're going to do everything we can to stop you.'"But that's exactly what's happened in Newton County, Missouri, where local lawmakers passed a <a href="https://www.newtoncountymo.com/notices/newton-county-second-amendment-preservation-act">Second Amendment Act</a> that allows local law enforcement to arrest any federal agents attempting to enforce federal gun laws - though Miller says the statute isn't actually enforceable. <div type="image" title="Lindsey Graham shooting" height="2000" width="2666" msid="82029798" hostid="261"></div>"The general proposition is that federal officers cannot be prosecuted by state or local authorities for acts done in furtherance of their official duties," Miller told Insider, citing In re: Neagle, an 1890 Supreme Court case ruling that said federal agents are immune from local prosecution if operating in the furtherance of federal law. Newton County, Missouri, Sheriff Chris Jennings did not respond to Insider's request for comment. <h2 style="font-weight: 400;">Texas governor says shooting victim's family wants Second Amendment sanctuary </h2>The passage of ag Second Amendment sanctuary resolution is all but a foregone conclusion in Texas, a state where nearly half of all adult residents - 45.7% - live with a gun in the house, according to a <a href="https://www.rand.org/pubs/tools/TL354.html">2020 Rand research project</a>. Gun control advocates say they're gearing up for a court battle either way. "The outcome for a bill like this would almost inevitably be a challenge in court," Jim Henson, the executive director of The Texas <keyword id="6358883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="politics">Politics</keyword> Project, <a href="https://www.kxan.com/news/texas-politics/abbott-vows-to-make-texas-a-2nd-amendment-sanctuary-state-in-response-to-biden-gun-plan/">told KXAN</a>. While existing TikTok mansions like the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/03/style/hype-house-los-angeles-tik-tok.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hype House</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tik-tok-stars-live-rent-free-in-mansion-sway-house-2020-1">Sway LA</a> (which opened in December and January, respectively) continue to promote <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/B-P_34Jjfst/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">merchandise</a> and create videos to meet <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/engagement-spikes-on-instagram-youtube-tiktok-youtube-influencer-survey-2020-3">growing demand</a> for social-media content, new houses that planned launches in recent weeks have been stifled or delayed. TikTok star Josh Sadowski originally intended to rent a $15,000-a-month house in Los Angeles for his 7-person creator collective beginning this month. Instead, he's currently sheltering in place at his family's home in Missouri."If things calm down, the idea is to have everyone who is moving into the house actually be in a two-week quarantine," he <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/launching-a-tiktok-influencer-collab-house-cost-plan-rules-2020-4">told Business Insider</a>.Another TikTok house has been caught in a state of limbo.On March 12, the talent management agency Influences held a splashy launch party for its upstart TikTok collab house, "<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@girlsinthevalley" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Girls in the Valley.</a>" It recruited the clothing brand Boohoo as a party sponsor and invited the musical artist Doja Cat as a guest.A week later, California's governor issued an order for all residents of the state to "stay at home" amid the coronavirus outbreak, prompting several of the creator collective's members to move back in with their families. Girls in the Valley is the brainchild of Ariadna Jacob, Influences' founder and CEO, and was designed to be a content house for her firm's top female talent. Jacob said she cast the seven members of Girls in the Valley by scouting the "For You" page on TikTok, a landing page that highlights popular content on the app. "I'm older, but I also grew up and lived in social media, so I ended up being able to get the top girls that I wanted for it," Jacob said. "Everybody's just very different. They each have their own individual brand. I wanted to make the Spice Girls. All different, but all part of the same group."The seven members of Girls in the Valley are represented in all areas of business by Jacob's firm. They're expected to pay rent each month to live in the house, but will receive an equity stake in the Girls in the Valley brand for each year that they live in the house. This means that any brand deals, merchandise, and TV spin-offs associated with the brand could yield a return for its founding TikTokkers. "For every year that they are a part of the brand, they can earn one point of equity - one percentage of equity," Jacob said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Short-term rental hosts are facing more competition from listings on Airbnb and other sites.</li><li>Some hosts with large-scale operations turn to direct bookings to avoid fees and pocket more money.</li></ul>Last summer ushered in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airbnb-vrbo-hosts-summer-slowdown-new-normal-2023-6">a new normal for hosts on Airbnb</a> and other short-term rental booking websites.Travelers are still choosing short-term rentals in large numbers, but there is a glut of places to stay left over from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meteoric-rise-spectacular-fall-airbnb-queen-vacation-rentals-real-estate2024-4">the Airbnb gold rush of recent years.</a>Ahead of summer 2024, hosts face pressure to stand out from all the other listings in their areas. Adding additional stress is the increased unpredictability of travelers themselves — hosts say guests are booking trips more last-minute than the advance-planning of years past.As recently as March, listings across Airbnb and Vrbo stood at 1.57 million across the country, a 12.3% increase even from the same time last year, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.airdna.co/blog/us-review-march-2024">according to analytics site AirDNA.</a> Average occupancy for hosts, or the number of nights they're booked each month, improved slightly by 2% compared to last year, though March 2023 represented <a target="_blank" href="https://www.airdna.co/blog/airdna-market-review-us-march-2023">a 4% drop from 2022</a>.To protect their margins, hosts are turning to different strategies to bring in returns.Some hosts are turning to social media to lure summer guests, hiring local influencers to create video reviews of their properties and trading free getaways for promotional photos. Meanwhile, professional hosts, which AirDNA defines as anyone with more than 20 listings, look to leverage their brands and manpower into booking directly with guests — bypassing the fees associated with the major platforms."If I could, I would want them all to be direct bookings," said Emily Burke, a host who manages 40 listings in Tulsa, Oklahoma.<h2 id="fdda9288-e3f3-4304-87a1-4efc3014a711">Big-time hosts turn to direct booking, but it comes with risks</h2>Direct booking is when a guest reserves their stay on a property's personal website instead of through a major platform like Airbnb, Vrbo, and others.Arizona host Rick Kenworthy, who manages 91 listings in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scottsdale-arizona-millionaires-moving-what-its-like-photos-2024-4">Scottsdale</a> area near Phoenix, said he's made direct booking a priority.Kenworthy said he increased the percentage of direct bookings to 25% in the first quarter of 2024, up from 10% during the same period last year — which he said translates to $500,000 more in revenue. Kenworthy offers a 5% discount if guests book direct, bringing a $350-a-night stay down to $330.The proposition in direct bookings is that both parties save on fees, creating a lower price per night for guests and allowing hosts to keep the entirety of the earnings.Kenworthy's strategy has been twofold. First, he tripled his property-management company's email distribution list by using Wi-Fi capture technology that stores emails when guests log in during their stays. He then emails out special offers with links to the direct-booking site. Second, he's invested in branded items like coffee cups and pens that fill each of his properties, hoping to build familiarity with customers."We're not force-feeding anybody," he told Business Insider. "But at the end of the day, it comes down to dollars and cents."For some hosts, though, the prospect of striking out on their own is too daunting. They may be wary of stepping away from Airbnb, Vrbo, Expedia, and others, both for the insurance protection offered through those sites and the exposure that comes from their massive pool of travel-hungry users.Missouri host Ryan Villines, who volunteers for Airbnb as a community leader for his region, believes the risk of direct booking is greater than the reward.With direct bookings, hosts are responsible for collecting the proper paperwork for background checks and payment information, and they don't have the additional insurance offered by the major platforms."If something goes sour or someone lights your house on fire, there's some protection," said Villines, who manages four properties near the popular vacation destination Lake of the Ozarks. "If you're doing direct booking, that's super risky."<h2 id="e8320f71-42dc-4e0a-9d38-bb6fa29186fb">Hosts turn to influencers to tour their properties on social media</h2>Burke, the host with 40 listings in Tulsa, said guests have been shifting toward last-minute stays — which is stressful for hosts relying on their business.Burke predicts she'll end May with around 58% occupancy, but just weeks ago she was only booked for 30% of the nights in May.In an effort to attract more bookings overall, she's begun working with a local influencer with 50,000 followers. So far, they've already filmed one of Burke's short-term-rental properties near the popular Tulsa park known as the Gathering Place and have plans to film another near a "hip shopping district" known as Cherry Street."Both of those are location, location, location. So people know they can stay in really cool areas and at beautiful properties with our business," Burke said.Burke declined to disclose how much she is paying the influencer to feature her properties but said comparable digital marketing services cost $1,000 a month and still require Burke to do much of the editing, posting, and content strategy."That's not my jam," Burke said. "I'm not a video editor. I don't have a big following."Villines, the host with four Lake of the Ozarks properties, said he has struck deals with influencers, trading free stays at his listings for packages of content.Villines said that even though he expects his 2024 summer bookings to drop by about 10% from last year, he's able to use those unbooked nights for content swaps to improve his marketing.He's given content creators who've reached out to him through Airbnb two- or three-night stays in exchange for up to 50 professional photos he can use for the property's Airbnb profile or a well-composed marketing video that might otherwise cost $500 to $1,500."Because I'm down in numbers, I have more availability for nights that I could swap services," he said.Influencers can also help promote direct booking, Burke said.When the influencer eventually posts a link to one of her properties, Burke asks that it direct viewers to her business website instead of the Airbnb listing.Burke said she hopes Tulsans following the influencer are inspired to book through her and save on fees."My approach is that she's really focused on bringing guests to our houses that are booking directly," she said.

Airbnb hosts are bracing for an unpredictable summer

The openings are happening in states that have taken steps to jumpstart their economies. CNBC reported that the malls will have reduced hours (11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday) so that cleaning can be done overnight. They will encourage shoppers to wear masks — as well as give masks and hand sanitizing packets away to shoppers who ask for them — and require that employees wear them. They will also impose measures to encourage social distancing, including limiting seating in food courts and placing decals on floors. Simon's malls have been temporarily closed <a href="https://investors.simon.com/news-releases/news-release-details/simon-property-group-temporarily-closes-all-domestic-properties">since March 18</a>. The original plan was for the malls to be closed for 12 days, but the closures were extended as the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> pandemic evolved and spread to more of the country. A representative for Simon did not return Business Insider's request for comment. As many retailers <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jcpenney-macys-victorias-secret-kohls-furlough-workers-2020-3">have furloughed or laid off much of their workforce</a>, bringing employees back could be a tricky proposition. Humana inks deal to build more senior primary care centers

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div><ul><li>Four Democratic senators are speaking out about their own experiences being sexually harassed.</li><li>They opened up as part of the #MeToo campaign that picked up steam in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.</li><li>They emphasized that for things to change, there needs to be a cultural shift from teaching women to avoid sexual assault, to teaching men not to behave inappropriately towards women.</li></ul> Four female senators spoke out about their own past experiences involving sexual harassment after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/list-of-women-who-have-accused-harvey-weinstein-of-sexual-harassment-or-assault-2017-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">over three dozen women</a> accused Hollywood mogul <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-the-new-york-times-broke-open-the-harvey-weinstein-story-2017-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Harvey Weinstein</a> of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/list-of-women-who-have-accused-harvey-weinstein-of-sexual-harassment-or-assault-2017-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">varying degrees of sexual misconduct</a>.NBC's "Meet The Press" reached out to all 21 female members of the US Senate and asked if they wanted to <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/video/women-senators-say-metoo-reveal-stories-of-sexual-harassment-1078869571953" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">share stories of sexual harassment</a> as part of the <a href="https://qz.com/1105615/metoo-the-movement-was-actually-launched-10-years-ago-by-a-black-activist/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">#MeToo campaign</a> that picked up steam following the Weinstein scandal.Four women - Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Claire McCaskill, Mazie Hirono, and Heidi Heitkamp - came forward and recounted their experiences.Warren, a Massachusetts senator known for her progressive ideology, recalled being harassed by a senior faculty member when she had just started out as a law professor. The colleague, Warren said, often made inappropriate jokes and commented on her appearance, and one day invited her to his office.Once she got to his office, Warren said, "he slammed the door and lunged for me. It's like a bad cartoon. He's chasing me around the desk trying to get his hands on me.""And I kept saying, 'You don't want to do this. You don't want to do this. I have little children at home, please don't do this,'" she recalled. Eventually, she was able to reach the door and get out before things progressed, and she went back to her office."I just sat and shook and thought, what had I done to bring this on?" Warren told NBC. "And I told my best friend about it. Never said a word to anyone else, but for a long time, I wore a lot of brown."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Hirono, who represents Hawaii, recalled having been propositioned by teachers, by colleagues, and several others. She observed that sexual harassment and other "unwanted attention" occurs when there is "uneven power, and it's usually the woman who has less power."McCaskill, a senator from Missouri, was harassed while working as a state legislator in her 20s. She said she approached the "very powerful speaker of the Missouri House of Representatives" when she was nervous about getting her first bill out of committee. She recalled asking him whether he had any advice for her on how she could move the legislation forward."And he looked at me and he paused and he said, 'Well, did you bring your knee pads?'" McCaskill told NBC. "I do think he was joking, but it was shocking that he would make that joke to a colleague, even a very young colleague."Heitkamp, of North Dakota, recounted speaking at an event focusing on curbing domestic violence when she was the state's attorney general. At the event, Heitkamp said, a law enforcement officer approached her, "and he pretty much put his finger in my face, and he said, 'Listen here, men will always beat their wives, and you can't stop them.'"She told NBC that she was "stunned" and replied to the official, "You know, you might be right. I hope you're not right, but we shouldn't live in a world where we don't try."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div><h2>#MeToo</h2>The four senators spoke out about their experiences after activist Tarana Burke revived the #MeToo campaign, which she <a href="https://qz.com/1105615/metoo-the-movement-was-actually-launched-10-years-ago-by-a-black-activist/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">originally launched more than a decade ago</a>, following the bombshell allegations against Weinstein. Scores of men and women tweeted out the hashtag to indicate that they, too, had been harassed in the past.The campaign drew support from <a href="https://www.avclub.com/an-incomplete-depressingly-long-list-of-celebrities-se-1819628519" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">several prominent figures</a>, many of whom have previously opened up about their experiences with sexual harassment and assault, like Lady Gaga and actresses Evan Rachel Wood and Gabrielle Union. People like Alyssa Milano, Debra Messing, Olympic gymnast <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mckayla-maroney-larry-nassar-doctor-abuse-2017-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">McKayla Maroney</a>, America Ferrera, and Bjork spoke out as well.Weinstein was fired from the Weinstein Company, which he co-founded, after the allegations against him became public. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts also <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/harvey-weinstein-suspended-from-bafta-2017-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">suspended Weinstein's membership</a>, releasing a statement that called his alleged behavior "completely unacceptable and incompatible with BAFTA's values."Last week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/harvey-weinstein-expelled-from-academy-of-motion-picture-arts-and-sciences-sexual-assault-harassment-allegations-2017-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">voted to oust him</a> from its ranks.Heitkamp said it was sad that it took something as "horrific" as the Weinstein scandal to "make people feel strong enough to actually speak up.""The voices of all these women are so much stronger and louder together," she added.McCaskill said she wasn't surprised by the allegations, given her own past experiences, and that she understood why victims of sexual assault and harassment keep their experiences to themselves.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Moving forward, Heitkamp said, it's imperative that families work to implement cultural change so that the focus is on teaching men not to behave inappropriately, instead of teaching women how to guard against sexual assault."We have to achieve something within our families and within our children," Heitkamp said. "It's not acceptable, if you're raising daughters, to say, 'Look, you may not think it's ever going to happen to you. In all likelihood, it will.'"Instead, she added, "we should be raising sons to say, 'I will never do this. I will behave differently.'"Hirono told NBC that men should know that suggestive comments and lewd behavior is "not cute, it's not fun."McCaskill emphasized that women who are victims of campus sexual assault should not wonder whether they had done something to provoke the attack.Things like how much a woman has had to drink, who she was with, and whether she should have gone to a party "does not excuse criminal conduct," McCaskill said. 4 female senators share their own stories of being sexually harassed after the Harvey Weinstein scandal

Thomson ReutersFormer U.S. President Barack Obama waves after speaking at the Global Food Innovation Summit in MilanA month into his presidency, Donald Trump was surprised."Nobody knew healthcare could be this complicated," Trump mused during a White House event on February 27.Three months, two votes, and one hugely unpopular bill later, the Republican Party is still struggling with just how complicated healthcare can be.Despite advancing the American Health Care Act (AHCA) out of the House, the GOP's attempt to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act is still, at best, from completion. A series of snags have complicated the top item on the party's agenda.Between crumbling insurance markets, policy divisions in the party, and public dissatisfaction with their proposals, the GOP's healthcare overhaul is on shaky ground.<h2>What's the score?</h2>The AHCA took another hit this week when the Congressional Budget Office released its updated projections on the legislation's effects on premiums and coverage.The CBO found that the bill would bring down premiums in the aggregate and reduce the deficit, but also result in 23 million fewer people having health insurance in 2026 than under the current baseline.Perhaps most strikingly, the CBO found that a new provision in the AHCA, imposed by the so-called MacArthur amendment, would undermine protections for people with preexisting conditions and leave them subject to sky-high premiums.(<a href="http://read.bi/2qjDRig" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Read a full breakdown of the new CBO score»</a>)Even before the score, the bill was not popular with Americans.A poll released by Quinnipiac University on Thursday showed just 20% of Americans support the AHCA, and other polls consistently show that the bill is deeply unpopular.At the same time, Obamacare has seen a surge in popularity. A recent Gallup poll showed 55% of Americans support the law, its highest level of approval since its passage more than seven years ago.Thomson ReutersSenate Majority Leader McConnell speaks to Reuters during an interview in Washington<h2>'It's a very awkward process'</h2>Republicans in Washington have heard the pushback - at least in the Senate.Even as House GOP leaders were celebrating the passage of the AHCA in a white House Rose Garden ceremony with Trump earlier this month, Senate GOP members were saying they were prepared to scrap the legislation and write their own version of the bill.Senate Republicans have worked over the last few weeks in an attempt to come up with their own version of a healthcare bill. It doesn't appear to be going smoothly.On Tuesday, GOP Sen. Bob Corker expressed frustration with the Senate process, questioning the working group of roughly 13 lawmakers that are crafting the bill."It's a very awkward process, at best," Corker said, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/bob-corker-republicans-health-care-bill_us_59246661e4b094cdba58140d">according to the HuffPost.</a> "There are no experts. There's no actuarial. ... Typically, in a hearing, you'd have people coming in and you'd also have the media opining about if a hearing took place, and X came in and made comments."Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell even told Reuters on Thursday that he doesn't "know how we get to 50 [votes] at the moment."While there are plenty of issues to iron out, there are two major disagreements, said Cynthia Cox, associate director at nonpartisan health policy think tank The Kaiser Family Foundation:<ol><li>Medicaid funding: The House version of the AHCA would cut $880 billion in funding from the 2026 baseline, something that did not please some Republican senators. The ACA expanded Medicaid to people making up to 138% of the federal poverty line, resulting in roughly 11 million more people on the program's rolls. "There are red states that have expended Medicaid and they may want to keep this additional Medicaid funding," Cox told Business Insider. Additionally, changes to how the federal government funds Medicaid and how quickly funding would grow could cause cracks in the GOP.</li><li>Funding for tax credits: The AHCA proposes flat tax credits based on age instead of adjusted for income under Obamacare. This means that poorer and older people could see their premiums skyrocket, an alarming proposition to many GOP senators. "There is some acknowledgement that the AHCA are lower for older people and people in rural areas," Cox said. "So there are questions over whether to just increase the total on the AHCA flat tax credits or start to adjust for income and location, which is closer to the ACA."</li></ol>Both of these issues, Cox said, do have a common theme: money."To make any of those changes, they need one relative to the AHCA," Cox said. "So it would also come down to which taxes they cut, or don't."APPresident Donald Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan<h2>'They really need clarity'</h2>As all of the concerns swirl around Washington, insurers and state insurance markets across the country face an uncertain future for a critical piece of Obamacare - and a hard deadline.So-called cost sharing reduction (CSR) payments help to offset costs to insurers for providing low-income Americans with affordable plans that reduce out-of-pocket costs. Their future is uncertain.(<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-obamacare-cost-sharing-payments-2017-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Read more about how CSR payments work »</a>)As Obamacare was signed into law, the Obama administration stipulated that CSR payments would be funded via the executive branch. That authority was contested by the Republican-led House in a lawsuit that has been ongoing for several years. The House argues that only Congress has the authority to appropriate the funds.A court ruled in 2016 against the Obama administration, endangering the future of the CSR payments. The Obama administration appealed the ruling. Now, the Trump administration must ultimately decide whether to continue with the lawsuit. Trump himself has cast serious doubt as to whether it will.On Monday, the Trump administration and the House agreed to delay the next step in the case, punting another 90 days to try and come up with a solution outside of the courts.But the uncertainty over the critical CSR payments have left insurers in limbo as they decide their plans for the exchanges' 2018 plan year. The deadline to submit plans for the exchanges next year is late June, giving insurers little time and clarity on how to price their plans - or whether it's worth participating at all.Cox said the uncertainty over the payments could end up driving insurers away, or cause the companies to increase their premiums."They really need clarity on this now," Cox said. "Without this clarity, they're either going to have to decide to leave the market or raise their premiums substantially, and in most cases I would expect insurers to do one of those two things."Matthew Fiedler, a fellow with the Brookings Institution's Center for Health Policy, agreed that the uncertainty could have a negative effect on consumer choices."The fact that the administration is a big question mark that needs to be resolved at some point later in the summer can't make them feel particularly good about where the market is," Fiedler told Business Insider. "I think it continues to make them place significant weight on the idea that the payments might ultimately not be there next year and when there's any possibility that they won't be paid it just makes it very hard to plan."Thomson ReutersFILE PHOTO: Healthcare demonstrators protest at the White House in Washington<h2>Market wobbles</h2>Already, states where insurers have submitted their 2018 exchange plans have seen significant premium increases. Republicans have argued that the rates are another sign that Obamacare as it stands is failing and that the need to pass a repeal and replacement is even more urgent.House Speaker Paul Ryan's website labeled a New York Times editorial attributing some of the insurer exits from insurance exchanges to the AHCA as "disingenuous nonsense.""The writing was already on the wall that Obamacare was failing," said the post. "Unfortunately, the Left is only now calling it out - with a pathetic attempt to point the finger at Republicans."Fielder pushed back against that argument."We know how large insurers losses were in 2015 and 2016 and we know how much they raised rates in 2017," Fiedler said. "That allows us to reach a pretty good guess as to what their margins are for 2017 and that all suggests that they should've been breakeven for 2017 without market disruption or even a little better. So it's just not plausible given what we know about insurers financials in previous years that they would need to impose another round of very large increases for next year."In terms of exits, insurers like Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas City, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/obamacare-exchange-missouri-blue-cross-blue-shield-kansas-city-2017-5">which announced Wednesday it was leaving exchanges</a> in Missouri and Kansas, have cited not only losses, but also "the uncertain direction of this market."One insurer took this a step further and clearly pinned the blame on the AHCA for serious instability in the individual insurance market.Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina said the company decided to more than double their requested premium increase due to the CSR uncertainty.The company has requested a 22.9% increase for the average premium in 2018, but said that if the CSR payments were guaranteed, that would only by 8.8%."The latest news came earlier this week as the Trump Administration delayed a decision on whether to fight the House lawsuit," Brian Tajlili, the director of actuarial and pricing services for Blue Cross NC, wrote<a href="http://blog.bcbsnc.com/2017/05/premiums-rise-2018-affordable-care-act-plans/"> in a blog post on Thursday explaining the decision.</a> "As a result, insurance companies can't count on being paid for reducing cost-sharing for eligible ACA customers."Tajlili went on to tie the increase directly to the uncertainty surrounding the CSR payments, saying more clarity on the ACA's future from lawmakers could have driven the premium increases even lower."In other words, with the right actions coming out of Washington to stabilize the market, the rate increase from Blue Cross NC would have been between 5% and 6%," Tajlili wrote.
