According to a recent survey conducted by ProEves — a gender consulting firm — the number of women employees at corporate India has stood at, on average, just 20% over the past five years, Economic Times <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/company/corporate-trends/companies-gender-diversity-drive-yet-to-bear-fruit/articleshow/67031727.cms">reported</a>. The survey also revealed that the women headcount at Indian and multinational companies in India was just 12% at the top-notch positions. ProEves surveyed over 50 prominent companies across sectors and different industry verticals including companies such as Walt Disney, Viacom18, Flipkart, Whirlpool and Philips. While at the junior level, women shared about 22% of the total workforce, the share dropped down to 17% at the intermediate levels, further decreasing to 14% at senior management, according to the report. The US has nearly double the women at its companies compared to India, it noted. According to the gender diversity survey evaluation, women in ‘talent’ programmes including mentoring, development and leadership programmes is even less than 20% in the majority of the companies. The numbers show that companies in India have a long way to go to increase women hiring, retention, and promotion. The inequality should be addressed at all levels—including internships and elementary levels—offering equal opportunities to women as to men, Forbes <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/noelsharkey/2018/12/08/gender-diversity-is-urgently-needed-say-prominent-women-in-technology/#6324e0dd52e5">highlighted</a> in a report. Analysing the key reasons for women leaving corporates, the survey found that over one-third of it was due to maternity. 'Gender diversity' may be a mere buzzword for corporate India — A recent survey shows some worrying numbers

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Hawley and Vance support striking auto workers, but they're not on the same page as union leadership.</li><li>It's a sign of the challenges for them in re-aligning the GOP toward the working class.</li></ul>As strikes at auto manufacturing plants continue across the country, some populist-minded Republicans are breaking from their party's long-standing orthodoxies and backing the United Auto Workers' demands.But those same Republicans remain politically at odds with the union's pugnacious leadership, underscoring deeper frustrations they have with actually-existing organized labor that are likely to complicate any potential populist re-alignment in the near future."There's a huge amount of tension between the president of UAW's political posture, and what's actually in the best interest of his workers," said Sen. JD Vance of Ohio. Vance, along with Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri, argues that the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) spurred by the Biden administration is making it harder for auto workers to bargain and will lead to the further off-shoring of their jobs to China. Both men represent states where the first wave of strikes began on September 15, and Hawley <a href="https://x.com/GreggPalermo/status/1706409140938039753?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">visited striking workers in Wentzville, Missouri</a> on Monday.They also contend that rank-and-file auto workers are actually skeptical of Biden's environmental initiatives, but that UAW President Shawn Fain has been unwilling to make those arguments amid the strike due to organized labor's longstanding ties to Democrats."They've got to play the hand that's dealt them," said Hawley. "They've got to work with the Biden administration, and they're the ones who are responsible for all of this."Last week, Fain even <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2023/09/19/politics/fain-trump-detroit/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slammed Donald Trump</a> as part of the "billionaire class" following the news that the former president would address union workers in Michigan this week."The whole problem that we have is a guy like Shawn Fain blasting Donald Trump," said Vance. "At the very least, just shut your mouth, and take the support from wherever you can get it."By contrast, Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio — a Democrat with a long relationship with organized labor — offered a dim view of Vance and Hawley's argument."They're going to use anything to divide, I understand that. Electric vehicles, that's the future," said Brown. "If the other side keeps doing this sort of faux-populist 'we're for workers,' and these electric cars go overseas, then we've lost everything."A spokesman for the UAW did not respond to Insider's request for comment.<h2>The complicated effect of electric vehicles</h2>After a full summer of bargaining between the UAW and Detroit's Ford, GM, and Stellantis, Fain said that none of the companies came close enough to a deal to avoid a strike. For the first time in the UAW's history, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-gm-stellantis-uaw-workers-indefinite-strike-2023-9">Fain called upon workers at all three companies to go on strike</a> at targeted assembly plants. That strike was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uaw-auto-union-strike-strategy-longer-walkouts-2023-9">expanded to all parts distribution centers</a> for GM and Stellantis last week.Several Democrats have visited picket lines to rally with workers, and Biden is set to visit the picket line in Detroit on Tuesday — one day before Trump's Michigan event. Fain has been generally supportive of electric vehicles for their environmental benefits, declaring that anyone who doesn't believe in climate change <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/shawn-fain-united-auto-workers-president-face-the-nation-transcript-09-17-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"isn't paying attention."</a> But the union leader takes a hard line on who will be building those EVs.He has warned repeatedly that labor is being left behind in the transition to EVs, and in August of this year called upon the Biden administration to "<a href="https://uaw.org/statement-uaw-president-shawn-fain-u-s-department-energy-announcing-15-5-billion-new-grants-loans-support-just-transition-electric-vehicles/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ensure a just transition for the auto workers in this country."</a>Fain has also withheld support for Biden's re-election campaign, telling his members as recently as this past spring that he would like to see the Democrat show more support for workers in his pro-EV policies."If the government is going to funnel billions in taxpayer money to these companies, the workers must be compensated with top wages and benefits," Fain wrote in <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2023/05/03/auto-union-withholds-support-for-biden-citing-evs-00095136" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a May letter to members</a>.Some workers who spoke with Insider on the picket line in Michigan last week suggested that EVs weren't top of mind for them, including Matt Wegener, who has been at Ford's Michigan Assembly for more than 20 years."The EV factories in the future will still have humans in them," Wegener said. "Eventually, plants like mine will transition to EVs, and I trust our union to negotiate that we will still do that work."More important to Wegener, and other auto workers Insider spoke with, is that the UAW makes key wins now on pay and benefits so that when EVs become more prevalent, they are more protected."The first thing in our minds is that we deserve a raise, bottom line," said Charmonique Demings, an 11-year assembly line worker at Ford's Michigan Assembly.Meanwhile, Trump — also critical of electric vehicles — has cast himself as an ally to the striking workers. But his record is more complicated.The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, negotiated by Trump, was geared towards incentivizing more automotive production in the US. Trump also levied trade tariffs to discourage car companies from relying upon imports. But both of these actions did not seem to have much impact on preserving jobs during the 2019 labor talks in Detroit — GM still closed several factories that year following a 40-day strike.More broadly, Trump's appointees at both the National Labor Relations Board and the Supreme Court took <a href="https://apnews.com/article/labor-union-auto-workers-trump-strike-dfcb805fd4e749b13aaf827e1463da73" target="_blank" rel="noopener">steps that weakened workers' ability to organize.</a>Yet polling suggests that Trump's stock could be on the rise among these workers. According to Bloomberg, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-09-25/trump-battles-biden-for-union-vote-in-strike-embroiled-michigan?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=share&amp;utm_campaign=twitter?sref=ZXdAWLUJ" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Trump led Biden among Michigan union members</a> by a 46% to 43% margin in August, down from a 51-42% lead for Biden in June, before Detroit labor talks began.In general, EVs can be tough on auto manufacturing workers. Battery-powered cars are less complex than their internal-combustion engine counterparts and require up to 30% fewer workers to assemble, industry analysts have said. Hawley and Vance have also pointed out that China currently dominates the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-united-states-electric-vehicle-market-share-auto-brands-pricing-2023-1">EV battery supply chain</a>, helping the country lead global EV sales without ever stepping foot in the US. Biden has set an ambitious target for the American automotive industry, calling for half of all new vehicles sold in the US to be zero-emission by 2030. So far, the only company that has figured out how to squeeze consistent profits out of electric cars is Tesla, which does not use more union labor. The UAW, one of America's oldest and most well-known unions, is coming off a tough decade in which membership plummeted and a years-long criminal probe sent several prominent leaders to prison. The result has been waning influence in the industry it once dominated, with high-profile organizing failures at Volkswagen and Tesla.The union is now aiming to rebuild its reputation and influence in automotive labor and the labor movement writ large. Fain has adopted broad anti-billionaire rhetoric that speaks to the themes of the last three years of a newly emboldened labor movement, and that ideology has spread to the picket line, where workers say they're fighting for a better future for the working class.<h2>'How to divide up a shrinking pie'</h2>Vance and Hawley's response to the UAW strike also has implications for the future of the Republican Party's relationship with labor."The idea that this is faux-populism actually really frustrates me," said Vance."I don't want them to just have higher wages next year, I want them to have a job five years from now," Vance continued. "They're gonna go make demands on GM and Ford, and Ford is gonna say, 'go fuck yourself,' because all your jobs are in China, we don't need you guys."But Brown argued that the duo's refusal to support the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act, a Democratic-backed bill designed to <a href="https://aflcio.org/pro-act" target="_blank" rel="noopener">strengthen workers' ability to form unions</a>, suggested a lack of commitment to organized labor."If they were pro-labor, they'd support the Protecting the Right to Organize Act," said Brown. "It's labor's number one priority."Vance said he did not support the bill because it would empower the "current union leadership model" that's "completely in bed with the Democratic Party." He instead gestured towards proposals from the <a href="https://americancompass.org/a-better-bargain/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">conservative group American Compass</a>, which include ideas like workers' councils, sectoral bargaining, and de-prioritizing social justice advocacy by union leadership."There are a lot of different approaches that we've looked at that we think might actually give workers more bargaining power in the economy, but also would make their leadership a little bit more responsive to them politically," said Vance.And Hawley, who previously<a href="https://x.com/HawleyMO/status/644265818138644484?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> supported right-to-work legislation</a> in Missouri and once called for an "end to union-backed candidates" in his party, said that the PRO Act would "hurt workers more than it helps" and that preventing off-shoring was more important than strengthening the right to unionize."If you want to talk about how to divide up a shrinking pie, I suppose we can do that," said Hawley. "But why don't we think about how we get more pie for labor in this country?"

'Just shut your mouth:' Populist Republicans back UAW workers' demands while slamming union leadership

&#xa0; A recent survey conducted by ProEves revealed that <keyword id="46431" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="India-Inc">India Inc</keyword> has less than 20% participation of women in workforce and this has remained the same for the past three years. This highlighted the fact that even in this age, gender diversity agenda for many multi-national and Indian companies in the country is still not increasing. 
 Similar studies were conducted by Catalyst in 2015 and Community Business in 2014, and all of them showed similar results. In fact, the percentage has been the same for the past five years. The survey was conducted among 47 leading companies like <keyword id="73803" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reckitt-Benckiser">Reckitt Benckiser</keyword>, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Nestle+India&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Nestle India</a>, Colgate-Palmolive (India), Sanofi, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Britannia+Industries&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Britannia Industries</a>, Whirlpool, Flipkart, Convergys, InMobi, Novartis, Mars International, Honeywell India, Mondelez India Foods, Marico, Castrol India, among others. 
 
At top managerial level the percentage is as low as 12-13%. However, at junior levels, 21% companies have representation of above 35%. This puts some light on the leaking pipeline from the middle to senior positions. Compared to the US, India is at half the women participation across all employee groups. 
 "There is a big discrepancy in policies and implementation. Companies could really do a lot more in softer aspects of inclusion and that can happen when leaders begin walking the talk," <keyword id="247599" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saundarya-Rajesh">Saundarya Rajesh</keyword>, founder-president of AVTAR Career Creators and <keyword id="780114" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="FLEXI-Careers-India">FLEXI Careers India</keyword> told ET. 
 
The survey also shows that goals on diversity are stated by about 61% of the companies but only one-third of them have reached their number target and have no target association on inclusion for leaders, a reflection that many companies have the intent but are shying away from real numbers. 
 “Another reason for the gap is that lot of things employees think are important are not what women think, a childcare and parental support organization that works with individuals and companies to provide verified childcare support and drive. ProEves also runs a <keyword id="6354576" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Facebook">Facebook</keyword> community of women called ‘Happy Moms raise Happy Kids’ which acts as a support group” <keyword id="3703996" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ketika-kapoor">Ketika Kapoor</keyword>, coFounder of ProEves told ET. 
 
According to a survey conducted by ProEves, lack of flexibility proved to be the second biggest reason for leaving the cooperate world by moms. "This is really a paradox and companies have to concentrate on their culture to achieve real flexibility," said Rajesh. 
 
Thw percentage of women working in white collar jobs has dropeed down from 25.5% in 2002-03 to 22-23% at present. Whereas the gender diversity ratio is around 15% now. 
 
There is definitely a positive intent and genuine recognition of the benefits of genuine diversity . However, there exists larger issues to be looked at like child care support system, commuting, infrastructure that are to be looked into.

As of today, it's back, with a bold plan to have a new electric car rolling off the line by the end of 2014.
The brand was first revived in 2008 by Albert Lam, the former CEO of Lotus Engineering Group and Managing Director of Apple's Asia operations. The plan was to build an electric car based on the Malaysian Proton sedan, and put an electric drive train in a Lotus Elise. But nothing happened, <a href="http://www.wired.com/autopia/2013/03/detroit-electric-apple/">according to Wired</a>.
Then today, the company announced it's back, again, and intends to create 180 jobs in Michigan by the end of the year. It is setting up shop in the Fisher Building in downtown Detroit. Its car will be a limited edition, 100 percent electric two-seater.
The new Detroit Electric will be unveiled early next month, and make its first appearance at the Shanghai Motor Show on April 20. Based on the teaser image Detroit Electric put out, it will likely be based on another Lotus.
Lotus makes beautiful, especially light <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword>, so they work well as electric conversions: The elegance adds cachet and appeals to wealthy buyers, and the added battery pack doesn't weigh it down too much. (Tesla's first model, the Roadster, was based on the Lotus Elise.)
But there are reasons to doubt the hype. <a href="http://www.wired.com/autopia/2013/03/detroit-electric-apple/">As Wired points out</a>, the Detroit Electric <a href="http://www.newspress.co.uk/public/ViewPressRelease.aspx?pr=41973&amp;pr_ref=13514">press release</a> is noticeably lacking in details about where its money is coming from and what sort of performance the car will offer.

The original Detroit Electric peaked in the 1910s, when it was popular among women and physicians who wanted a car that would start quickly and without cranking, <a href="http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080907/BUSINESS01/809070403">according to the Detroit Free Press</a>.
As cars with combustion engines became less expensive and more reliable, the slower, range-limited electrics were left behind.
The reinvigorated brand will be making cars that look very different, but the challenge — battling cheaper, more convenient vehicles — is the same.
It's very hard to build and sell <keyword id="6358835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Electric-cars">electric cars</keyword> in the U.S. After near failure and multiple big cash infusions, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-elon-musk-overcomes-challenges-2013-3">Tesla is finally on the verge of being profitable</a>. Fisker is teetering <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fisker-could-be-the-next-solyndra-2013-3">on the brink of bankruptcy</a>, and any savior will likely come from China or Europe.
It's even difficult for large, established automakers; there are no more than a handful of highway-capable electric models on the roads today, despite years of promises from GM, Ford, and others that the future is electric.
Genevieve Cullen, vice president of the Electric Drive <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">Transportation</keyword> Association, a pro-EV organization, acknowledges "it's a big challenge to start a new car company."
But, she argues, there are opportunities to tweak the conventional business model established by the big Detroit players over the past decades. Newcomers like Tesla, she says, are "inventing new ways to succeed." The industry is "headed to electrification," she adds — so Detroit Electric could capitalize on the trend.
The reborn brand has an ambitious goal — cars on the road in about 20 months — and a tough road ahead. But if it can build a car that's reliable and meets its milestones, it could put American electric cars back on top.
