 Bumble was started by Whitney Wolfe Herd in 2014 with a mission to create a safe and empowered space for women to make the first move when forming romantic relationships and to end misogyny. The application later applied its feminist vision to different spheres of life -- business, love, and friendships. It started supporting women financially who needed a boost with <keyword id="7501216" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bumble-Bizz">Bumble Bizz</keyword> and normalised seeking platonic relationships through Bumble BFF. Today, it has 85 million users globally. Bumble's advertising narrative #DatingJustGotEqual across the world, has encouraged women to make the first move. Its global brand endorsers, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Serena Williams, both married, represent a dating app simply because they mirror its ideology.

 Closer home, Priti Joshi, Vice President - Strategy, Bumble is leading this movement. Its latest marketing campaign is to flip sexist Bollywood songs and ideologies into more relevant and equal propositions. With International Women’s Day around the corner, we caught up with Joshi to understand its marketing strategy, if men are accepting being asked first, and vision for the application in India. Excerpts: When did you join Bumble? How has your personal journey been so far? Can you also walk us through some key highlights at Bumble? I joined Bumble in early 2018 leading strategic projects with a strong passion for the Bumble mission. A year and a half later, I now lead the Strategy and Analytics team and focus on driving growth in existing and new markets. My goal has always been to bring science to the art of business strategy, using creative insights from data and market research to ensure sustainable growth for Bumble. I focus heavily on expanding Bumble’s presence internationally and in our existing markets in over 150 countries across the globe. Last year, I led the strategic launch for Bumble in India and lead all marketing efforts in India today. Last year, we launched ’<a href="https://thebeehive.bumble.com/moves-making-impact">Moves Making Impact</a>’ in May, a new product feature where Bumble gives back on behalf of every woman who makes the first move in-app. This is the first time a global company has given each of its users the power to drive social good by fundraising through in-app activity. Each quarter, we give back to three different areas across human rights, public policy, or economic development and identify women who are doing good in these spaces globally. We also launched Private Detector, an in-app feature that takes an unprecedented approach to advancing safety in both the digital and real worlds. The feature automatically blurs lewd images and alerts the user that they have been sent something inappropriate. From there, the user can decide whether to view the image or block it, and if compelled, report it and the user to our moderation team. Bumble BFF is also fairly new and a unique venture. Can you tell us what the concept is and how has the reception been so far? Bumble BFF is our friendship-finding mode on the app. It is centered around normalising the need to make real friendships throughout life. Since launch, we’ve seen ~40% of women on Bumble in India using Bumble BFF mode to find new friends, whether it’s a woman connecting with other women in a new city, new moms finding other mom friends, finding a gym buddy for a spin class or a college freshman looking to make a friendship circle that would last him a lifetime. Have men opened up to the idea of not being in control of the entire process? Yes! We’ve heard from many men who use Bumble that they love it and appreciate it when women make the first move. Globally, women have made the first move over one billion times since we launched Bumble five years ago - even more exciting, since launch in India, women in India have made the first move over 3 million times! We’re also seeing that women in India are empowered and excited to make the first move - relative to women in the rest of the world, women in India are sending 2x as many messages. It’s encouraging to see that women and men in India are excited by connecting with one another across love, life, and work. In both your television ads, you chose Priyanka Chopra Jonas (engaged then) and Serena Williams - (now) two married women to endorse a dating app, why so? Bumble is so much more than just a dating app! With the addition of Bumble BFF, for friend-finding, and Bumble Bizz, for professional networking, Bumble is now a social networking platform that empowers women to make the first move in all areas of life: love, life and work. This means that you can be on Bumble without setting up a dating profile! In fact, so many of our users ‘Hide Date Mode’ and still engage in BFF and / or Bizz mode. Both Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Serena Williams represent empowered women who have made the first move across all areas of their lives. Through these first moves they have shattered stereotypes and inspired women (and men) around the world and this makes them the perfect Bumble partners. What is your marketing strategy in India and how important is India as a market for Bumble? India continues to be an important growth market for Bumble. Our marketing strategy since launch has always been to adopt a consumer-first approach to drive brand awareness and engagement. In an effort towards achieving our mission, we’re constantly leaning heavily on establishing a consistent brand narrative across various offline and digital media touchpoints, along leveraging data-driven performance marketing, influencer activations, content partnerships and experiential marketing. There are reports that Bumble is open to brands for advertising now. What kind of brands are you looking at? Will there be a filter here, too? We are always exploring interesting collaborations with various brand partners, but we don’t currently offer advertising within our app. According to reports, you placed around 500 outdoor ads just across New York for your campaign ‘Find Them on Bumble’. Even in India, you went big on outdoor advertising. In an era where brands are investing more on digital platforms, like Tinder launched in India only on the back of digital platforms, what made you choose outdoor? From a global brand perspective, it’s always been really important to us to have a physical presence in the markets where we operate and outdoor advertising moments -- whether billboards, bus shelters, experiential pop ups -- they do just that! But we don’t solely focus on outdoor. Since launch, we’ve been curating an omni-channel approach to our marketing campaigns — from driving reach, awareness and engagement through a combination of high impact outdoor and digital-first media investments across digital ads, influencer activations, and content partnerships, to name just a few channels. How many countries are you present in? Which is your largest market? Where do you plan to go next? Bumble is available in over 150 countries. We launched five years ago in the United States and the United Kingdom, so those are key markets for us. We have exciting expansion plans in new markets next year - but you’ll have to stay tuned to find out where we launch next! Have you observed any changes in the dating pool lately? We are continuing to see that more and more people globally are meeting their romantic partners online. Earlier this year, a statistics was released stating that <a href="https://qz.com/1546677/around-40-of-us-couples-now-first-meet-online/">over 40% of new couples in the United States meet online</a> and I think we will continue seeing high growth in other emerging online dating markets as it becomes less taboo to meet someone online.

Remembering Bumble’s brand journey before International Women’s Day

The programme is spread across six countries ( Australia, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, the Philippines and Singapore) in the APAC region, where a woman entrepreneur from each country will be given the reward to build their businesses. Bumble is backed by actress and entrepreneur Priyanka Chopra. Differentiating itself in the market, Bumble branded itself as a women-first platform. In the Indian market, the company has said that the number of women on the platform grew twice as faster than men. “This is about providing opportunities for women entrepreneurs to pitch their best ideas, and we’ll help support them by opening more pathways to success, while also encouraging them to make the first move with their business ventures,” said Priti Joshi, Vice President of Strategy at Bumble. Through this initiative, Bumble joins a long list of global companies who are focusing on entrepreneurship in India. Earlier, WhatsApp, Facebook and more have organised startup/entrepreneur-led challenges in India. Bumble, globally has over 66 million registered users in more than 150 countries.

Men using online dating apps in India outnumber women on the platform by nearly three times, according to a recent survey. Only 26% of dating app users are women against 74% men,<a href="https://qz.com/india/1484691/woo-tinder-trulymadly-have-a-massive-gender-problem-in-india/"> Quartz reported</a> citing a survey by Woo — an online dating app. ‘Not here to date or for hookups’ While online dating apps in the west are frequently used both for casual dating, long-term dating and, increasingly, hookups, Indian users reportedly have a totally different set of goals for signing up on these platforms. The report, which surveyed 20,000 in India, revealed that 38% of the people in India use the app to look for “meaningful relationships.” Whereas, for 28% it is also a way to socialise and meet new people after moving to another city. About 17% of the surveyed respondent said that they joined dating apps to expand their social circles. Who spends more time: Men or Women? Men tend to chat with multiple women simultaneously and hence they usually end up spending more time on the app in comparison to women who converse with two to three men at a time, reported Quartz citing the survey. Interestingly, men on these online platforms have complained about fewer female users. However, women are bothered by the huge amount of attention they get because there are too many men against fewer women. Dating apps working for ‘change’ Bumble — which has already marked its presence in 140 countries with 40 million users -- has recently launched in India with a purpose to change the dating game for women. <keyword id="1738241" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tinder">Tinder</keyword>, another dating app, has been tryin hard to grab a bigger piece of the Indian market by making ‘traditional’ ads and introducing ‘My Move’ feature — much similar to Bumble which is famous for letting women start the conversation on online dating apps.

India’s dating apps have way more men than women, says study

 Wizcraft International, the organizer said that it is getting positive response from the industry as well as the government. And that, the proof lies in ticket sales. The show which will be held on September 18, has already sold out a majority of its seats. As of September 17, only 55 seats of the total 2,500 are available on<a href="https://in.bookmyshow.com/events/iifa-awards/ET00111132"> bookmyshow.com</a>. This is even as the ticket prices have gone up in the last few years. Depending on the proximity to the stage, the tickets are retailed between ₹10,000 to ₹90,000. In spite of the sales, the big bang Bollywood show might be bracing for a slowdown which might not have affected it yet. After all, the entire media and entertainment industry revised its growth estimates to 12% from its earlier 13% for the financial year, <a href="http://71166633.cms">said an Economic Times</a> report. In spite of landmark events like Lok Sabha Election and the ICC world cup, the subdued growth is due to uncertainty in the market and lower TV ad spends. "IIFA has always Bollywood in gaining international traction and it is as international as it gets. It isn't a sign of slowdown. As far as I know, 5-7 advertisers have already backed the awards and the ticket sale can give a better picture,” Vinit Karnik, Business Head - Entertainment, Sports &amp; Live Events at GroupM told Business Insider India. Until now, the awards, popularly dubbed "Bollywood Oscars" by international press, was held at 16 countries. This year by holding it in Mumbai, the heart of Bollywood would save the organizers a few millions on travel and accommodation costs of stars and their entourage. Not that we have got anything against <keyword id="1987992" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Big-moolah">big moolah</keyword> – the kind of money this <keyword id="1987996" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Third-instalment">third instalment</keyword> of the Dhoom series has earned till Day 4, both in India and abroad. 
 Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya and produced by <keyword id="6385240" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aditya-Chopra">Aditya Chopra</keyword>, the high voltage <keyword id="6355304" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="action">action</keyword> thriller (starring <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword>, <keyword id="499" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="abhishek-bachchan">Abhishek Bachchan</keyword>, <keyword id="6354850" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Katrina-Kaif">Katrina Kaif</keyword> and <keyword id="36115" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="uday-chopra">Uday Chopra</keyword>) has sailed into the <keyword id="925977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rs-100-crore-club">Rs 100 crore club</keyword> just after the opening weekend and grossed around Rs 107 crore at home, according to industry estimates. Total collections during the first weekend stood at Rs 170 crore-plus, with nearly Rs 63 crore from <keyword id="116674" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="overseas-markets">overseas markets</keyword>. And that’s a record for any <keyword id="679" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="bollywood-movie">Bollywood movie</keyword>. Now it is only a matter of time before it surpasses the lifetime grossing of Krrish 3 (Rs 270 crore) or <keyword id="227940" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chennai-Express">Chennai Express</keyword> (Rs 409 crore). 
 
<keyword id="24705" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dhoom-3">Dhoom 3</keyword> has also raced past the <keyword id="1988004" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Opening-day-record">opening day record</keyword> of Chennai Express, a <keyword id="1988005" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shah-Rukh-Khan-Deepika-Padukone-starrer">Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone starrer</keyword> that bagged around Rs 33.12 crore on the first day. In contrast, Aamir’s flick has collected a little more than Rs 36 crore. Its performance is equally impressive after Day 4 (December 23, 2013) and the movie has grossed an estimated total of Rs 127 crore in the <keyword id="6382118" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Market">domestic market</keyword>. 
 In <keyword id="6378080" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="North-America">North America</keyword>, too, Dhoom 3 has debuted to a record-breaking opening weekend, collecting Rs 21.26 crore nett ($3.4 million) across 236 theatres – the biggest opening of all time for a <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> movie. In contrast, Chennai Express collected Rs 14.82 crore ($2.4 million) from 196 screens in America and <keyword id="6356687" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="canada">Canada</keyword> in its opening weekend. So Dhoom 3 has beaten its both records in <keyword id="1988011" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Screen-count">screen count</keyword> and collection. 
 
It has an impressive performance in other overseas markets as well. The movie has collected Rs 9.18 crore nett (£906,875) from 97 screens (fewer number of screens than Chennai Express) in the UK and Rs 3.85 crore nett (A$695,782) from 30 screens in <keyword id="6355478" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Australia">Australia</keyword> in the first weekend. While Dhoom 3 has collected Rs 1.11 crore nett (NZ$ 217,923) from 19 screens in <keyword id="22501" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="New-Zealand">New Zealand</keyword> and Rs 3.9 crore nett in <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword> the first weekend, Chennai Express gathered Rs 60.05 lakh (NZ$1,23,478) from 10 screens in NZ and Rs 1.84 crore in Pakistan for that span. 
 
There is yet another record associated with Dhoom 3. It has reportedly grabbed the <keyword id="1988018" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Biggest-number-of-screens">biggest number of screens</keyword> this time – around 4,500 in India and 750 screens overseas. The previous record was held by Chennai Express (3,700 screens at home and 700 screens abroad). 
 If all these numbers have numbed you a bit, let’s look at the storyline for a change. One can easily see it’s loaded with populist fare – <keyword id="24462" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="bikes">bikes</keyword>, <keyword id="28817" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="babes">babes</keyword> (who can forget Katrina’s high-flying <keyword id="729495" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Acrobatics">acrobatics</keyword> and tantalising <keyword id="16156" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="dances">dances</keyword>), exotic <keyword id="6542811" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="locations">locations</keyword>, great action and fascinating <keyword id="2902" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Stunts">stunts</keyword>. To top it all, there’s the muscle-flexing Aamir playing <keyword id="1841797" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sahir">Sahir</keyword> the baddie and looting <keyword id="6354604" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chicago">Chicago</keyword> banks without leaving any clue except a smiling clown face and a Hindi message (with help from Katrina or <keyword id="260889" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aaliya">Aaliya</keyword>, of course) while no-nonsense cop ACP Jai Dixit (Abhishek) and his bumbling sidekick <keyword id="208896" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ali-Akbar">Ali Akbar</keyword> (Uday Chopra) are back in action to <keyword id="1988025" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Catch-a-thief">catch a thief</keyword>. 
 We are also impressed by the superb <keyword id="42054" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Cinematography">cinematography</keyword> and great technical specs, but in spite of the <keyword id="3909943" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="star-power">star power</keyword> and the <keyword id="1988030" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sleek-treatment">sleek treatment</keyword>, this movie is painfully <keyword id="794224" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="predictable">predictable</keyword> and incredibly <keyword id="1311050" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="unimaginative">unimaginative</keyword>. One actually misses the subtle fun and the intriguing crime-tracking mechanisms of <keyword id="3894" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dhoom-2">Dhoom 2</keyword> here but then, this is the age-old Bollywood wine of betrayal-revenge-retribution, served in a <keyword id="99968" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="new-avatar">new avatar</keyword>. As Aparna Mudi of Zee News says – Dhoom 3 manages to deliver a typically <keyword id="1988026" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood-revenge-saga">Bollywood revenge saga</keyword> in a modern way. 
 
Sarita A Tanwar of Daily News and Analysis gives it 4 stars and says, “Welcome to the world of jaw-dropping action and stunts never seen before on Hindi screen. Dhoom 3 redefines the word ‘<keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword>’ in the grandest way possible.” 
 
That is true, in a way, but the flick has drawn flak for its many shortcomings. Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN has given the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and stated, “Dhoom 3 is let down by a <keyword id="1988035" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Convenient-script">convenient script</keyword> and its inability to deliver solid entertainment.” However, it’s Raja Sen of Rediff.com who drives the point home. He has given it 1.5 out of 5 stars and written, “Dhoom 3 is a children’s film made for children who’ve never seen a film.” And we cannot agree more. You will find loads of fascinating things in Dhoom 3, but just one thing is lacking – good cinema.
