This time around, this former union minister in the 2009 Congress government, was defeated by a wide margin of 1 lakh votes. This is in spite of high ticket endorsements that Deora had to get this time around. Mukesh Ambani, the country’s richest man and top businessman, who is also a South Mumbai resident had batted for him this time by appealing to Mumbai South's elite voters. “I believe Milind has in-depth knowledge of social, economic and cultural ecosystem of their South Mumbai constituency,” Ambani said in a video. The chairman of the third largest bank, Uday Kotak too batted for Deora. But this fell short of the Sena-BJP alliance which swept the state. Saffron Mumbai All of Mumbai's constituencies went the Saffron way as Poonam Mahajan of BJP won over Priya Dutt yet again in Mumbai North Central. The sitting MP of Mumbai North, Gopal Shetty also defeated Congress' Urmila Matondar by a margin of over 4.6 lakh votes. Sena's Gajanan Kirtikar and Rahul Ramesh Shewale won Mumbai North West and Mumbai South Central respectively. BJP's Manoj Kotak won the Mumbai North East seat. Lost Hopes This election brought a new hope for Milind Deora, a union minister in the last UPA government, who was a victim of Modi wave. This Congress candidate had hoped to reclaim his Mumbai South seat back from Arvind Sawant, the Shiv Sena candidate, who fought off the upper crest voters who have been bringing in their own to the fold, for decades now. Mumbai North Central also had interesting candidates. Poonam Mahajan, the daughter of late Telecom Minister Pramod Mahajan, contested against Congress’ Priya Dutt, the daughter of the legendary Sunil Dutt. Like Deora, Dutt too had to concede her sitting seat to Mahajan, after Modi wave washed away her seat prospects to this first-timer, by a massive 1.86 lakh vote margin. Dutt’s loss in Mumbai North Central was one of Congress’ major disappointments for the election. Star power Priya’s brother Sanjay Dutt whose image is now wiped squeaky clean, thanks to his biopic Sanju, had stepped in to campaign for his sister. This election, Congress employed enough star power to battle the larger-than-life Modi image. Actress turned politician Urmila Matondkar has braved many controversies to get Congress elected from Mumbai North, and take down BJP’s sitting MP Gopal Shetty. However, BJP had its share of troubles as well. They had to drop the sitting MP Kirit Somaiya from their candidate list after a controversial statement made on Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray. They fielded Manoj Kotak for the Mumbai North East seat after hotheaded Sena party members threatened to campaign against them if Somaiya came to power. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has fielded only a single candidate from Mumbai North East, Sanjay Patil, who had lost to Somaiya last time. Congress’ Sanjay Nirupam from Mumbai North West had contested against the sitting MP, Gajanan Kirtikar of Shiv Sena, to whom he conceded defeat to, last time. Eknath Gaikwad of Congress battled out Shiv Sena’a Rahul Shewale for the Mumbai South Central seat, in the city which has six Lok Sabha seats to offer.

 Born as <keyword id="163269" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fatima-Rashid">Fatima Rashid</keyword> but known by her screen name Nargis, the actress made her screen debut as a child artist in Talash-E-Haq in 1935. However, her acting career began in 1942 with Tamanna. 
 
Nargis garnered worldwide acclaim for her role of Radha in the Academy Award-nominated film Mother India (1957). Her performance in this movie, later, won her Best Actress trophy at the Filmfare Awards. 
 On March 11, 1958, Nargis married with her Mother India co-star <keyword id="18536" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sunil-dutt">Sunil Dutt</keyword>. Together, the couple was blessed with three children: actor <keyword id="7645" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Dutt">Sanjay Dutt</keyword>, Namrata Dutt and former Congress lawmaker <keyword id="1009" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Priya-Dutt">Priya Dutt</keyword>. During the same year, she was the first film actress to be conferred with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award.

<ul><li>Mumbai, India’s financial capital, will be going to the polls today during the fourth phase of the Indian Parliamentary election.</li><li>Out of Maharashtra’s 48 constituencies, 12 fall under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and 6 are directly in Mumbai.</li><li>The city is infamous for its low voter turnout even though it did witness a 10% increase during the last Indian general election in 2014.</li></ul>India’s financial capital Mumbai is a lucrative constituency and therefore the Bharatiya Janata Party coalition (BJP), which the regional outfit Shiv Sena is part of, is keen to retain its hold on. For a little over a year now, nearly all of the city is covered in a cloud of dust. Aside from the regular pollution, a spate of infrastructure projects like metro rail construction have been initiated by the incumbent coalition led by the BJP. There is a lot of buzz around elections in Mumbai, which accounts for 1% of India’s population <a href="https://www.census2011.co.in/census/city/365-mumbai.html">according </a>to Census 2011. The city’s two landmarks, Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), will remain shut as the city goes to the polls during the fourth phase of the Indian <keyword id="3393746" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="General-Election-2019">general election 2019</keyword>. However, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), which includes 12 of Maharashtra’s 48 constituencies, is <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/in-the-news/can-mumbai-break-the-low-voter-turnout-jinx-in-2019">infamous</a> for low voter turnout — although, it did witness a 10% increase in 2014 to 52.66% from 41.40% in 2009. It is generally believed that the average Mumbaikar, as the citizens call themselves, would rather drive out of the city for the long weekend than stay back for voting.  Those well-off, residing in growing clusters of high rises in South Mumbai, or SoBo as it is sometimes called, have little to complain about beyond bureaucracy, bad roads, and incessant traffic. There are barely any power cuts in the city. Most people even in the relatively less privileged middle class enjoy running water. However, for every one of those in Mumbai’s towering glory, there are thousands of people strewn, along the long banks of three sprawling highways heading north, in descending order of privilege — in some cases the loss of privilege is just perceived — based on their distance from SoBo. From the suburban buildings signifying various social ranks, down to the seemingly-endless shadowy slums, issues span from unemployment and insufficient salaries, to unaffordable rents and leaky roofs, to water scarcity and a crumbling state infrastructure that has been, at times, <a href="https://www.indiatvnews.com/news/india-foot-overbridge-collapses-in-navi-mumbai-latets-updates-injured-killed-authorities-513954">fatal</a>. Yet, most Mumbaikars don’t vote. Ajit Ranade, one of the cofounders of Association of Democratic Reforms, told the Hindu, “Low voter awareness, voters’ apathy, agnosticism — when the candidate on the ballot does not excite or motivate the voter— and lack of registration in the young category and first-time voters are the reasons for low voter turnout.” This time, some voters in South Mumbai may go to the poll booths but rather than vote between Shiv Sena’s Arvind Sawant or Congress’ Milind Murli Deora, their ballot will read NOTA (none of the above). The citizens in the area <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/elections/lok-sabha-2019/story/why-some-south-mumbai-voters-choosing-nota-1510675-2019-04-26">claim</a> that there hasn’t been any development in their region over the past 24 years. These voters are people who live in the shadows of some of the country’s richest, including the family of Mukesh Ambani. Chaos and colour Of the six constituencies in Mumbai, the most <a href="https://www.tribuneindia.com/news/nation/poonam-priya-dutt-battle-it-out-in-vip-constituency/764783.html">coveted</a> seat is the one in Mumbai North Central where 27 candidates are going to be battling for the crown. Running through the middle of this constituency is the western express highway, one of the country’s widest roads that is choked by traffic day in and day out. To the left of the highway is Bandra, home to many a celebrity. To the right of the same highway are areas like Kurla — once labeled the ‘dirtiest ward in the city’ — and Chandivali which are home to large communities living in slums. The political heavyweights in the fight for Mumbai North Central are Priya Dutt, the Congress candidate and, the incumbent, BJP’s Poonam Mahajan — both from political legacies. The former is the daughter of the late actor turned politician, Sunil Dutt, and the latter is BJP politician Pramod Mahajan’s daughter. Both Sunil Dutt and Pramod Mahan were iconic leaders in their own right who have left behind a legacy that has fueled their families’ political ambitions. One of the highlights of this election in Bandra is the recognition of sexual minorities as a politically important segment. Priya Dutt and Congress member, Harrish Iyer — who is also India’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/indias-first-openly-gay-politician-joins-the-oldest-party-in-the-country/articleshow/68799862.cms">first openly gay politician</a> — met with members of the LGBT community to discuss bringing their issues into mainstream politics. The country’s biggest financial hub is also home to Bollywood.As film careers fade, some of the actors jump into politics. The star-turned-politician creating the most buzz is Congress’ candidate for the Mumbai North Seat is Urmila Matondkar — a former actress — who will be going up against Gopal Shetty, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party, who won by a landslide 540,000 votes against his opponent in 2014. Much like the rest of India, Mumbai has seen a spike in communal rhetoric in recent years. In Mumbai North Central, which is prone to debilitating floods, the Mithi river that is now made up 100% of <a href="https://www.thequint.com/explainers/mumbai-mithi-river-pollution-problem-explained">sewage</a> remains an election issue one more time. Then again, floods, unemployment, creaky infrastructure, choked roads and lungs have been among the constant concerns in India’s city of dreams. This one city voting today has more people and money at stake than most others in India

There are six Assembly constituencies in the Mumbai North Central Lok Sabha constituency namely Vileparle, Chandivali, Kurla, Kalina, Vandre East, and Vandre West. The Kurla seat is reserved for SC candidates. The winner during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Mumbai North Central constituency was Poonam Mahajan Alias Poonam Vajendla Rao of the BJP who secured 186,771 votes more than Dutt Priya Sunil of the INC. For the upcoming Vidhan Sabha elections 2019, The Congress Party and BJP are fielding Jayanti Jivabhai Siroya and Adv. Parag Alavani from the Vile Parle seat. The Chandivali seat will see Mohd Aarif Naseem Khan of INC contesting. From the Kalina constituency, Shiv Sena is fielding Sanjay Putnis against INC’s George Abraham. Mangesh Kudalkar will field for Shiv Sena from the Kurla seat. INC is fielding Zishan Ziyauddin Siddiqui and Asif Ahmed Jakeriya from Vandre East and Vandre West respectively. From Vandre West BJP is fielding Adv. Ashish Shelar. The election date for Maharashtra assembly is October 21, 2019 and the counting date is October 24, 2019. During the 2014 assembly elections, BJP’s Parag Alavani won the seat from the Vile Parle constituency by securing 32435 more votes than Shashikant Govind Patkar of SHS. The Chandivali winner was Khan Mohd. Arif (Naseem) of INC who bagged 29469 votes more than Singh Santosh Ramniwas of SHS. Kurla (SC) seat winner was Mangesh Kudalkar of SHS. He secured 12679 votes more than that of Vijay Baburao Kamble of BJP. From the Kalina seat, Sanjay Govind Potnis of SHS secured 1297 votes more than the BJP candidate Singh Amarjeet Awadhnarayan and won the seat. The Vandre East constituency winner was SHS candidate Prakash (Bala) Sawant who secured 15597 votes more than Krishna Dhondu Parkar of BJP. From the Vandre West seat, Av. Ashish Shelar of BJP got 26911 votes more than the runner up candidate of INC Baba Ziauddin Siddique and became the MLA.

Maharashtra Lok Sabha Election Result 2019: BJP + Shiv Sena easily beat Congress + NCP

<keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> has led the <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> to its biggest <keyword id="6359191" type="EVENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="election">election</keyword> victory. In fact, it is the biggest election victory in the country since Rajiv Gandhi swept to power in 1984, following India Gandhi’s assassination. The outcome for the BJP has been even better than what the exit polls had predicted like Chanakya News. 
 
The BJP has swept away parties like Mayawati’s Bahujan Samajwadi Party and Mulayam’s Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh. BSP was completely decimated and even failed to open its account. 
 <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword>’ national tally has been less than that of the BJP in UP alone. The BJP had won 251 seats and was leading in 31 constituencies, making its total tally to 282 as per the latest update. The Congress had won only 41 and was leading in five, managing just a total of 46, as per the latest update. 
 <keyword id="41281" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="NDA">NDA</keyword>’s tally stood at 337 (lead+win), while <keyword id="6355364" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="UPA">UPA</keyword>’s tally stood at modest 59 (lead+win). 
 
Several Congress heavyweights – Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, PK Bansal, Kapil Sibbal, Sandeep Dikshit, Ajay Makan, Madhsudan Mistry, Sanjay Nirupam and Priya Dutt had to bite the dust. 
 
All the BJP-ruled states - Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh headed the BJP way. 
It remains to be seen what Modi does with this degree of political authority.

NEW DELHI: <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> has decided to convene a session of the AICC on January 17 to “motivate and galvanize” party workers for the 2014 polls, setting off speculation that the brainstorming session may see <keyword id="6548660" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Vice-President">vice-president</keyword> <keyword id="5268" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Rahul-Gandhi">Rahul Gandhi</keyword> being declared the party’s PM nominee. 
 
The session of the AICC — a body comprising delegates from across the country which has been frequently used to endorse the decisions of the high command and invest them with the veneer of consultation — has been conceived to lift the spirit of troops in the wake of the mauling in the recent assembly elections which has raised questions about its viability as a serious contender in the 2014 contest. 
 
As the announcement about the upcoming meeting became public, party spokesperson Priya Dutt told reporters, “The entire Congress is definitely looking forward to the session and if announcement on PM is made, we will be very, very happy.” 
 
She said, “You know in the entire Congress, there is only one leader and we would wish that Rahul Gandhi is projected.” 
 
The remark from the AICC podium at the official briefing, even if termed as a personal wish in response to questions, heightened expectations. Dutt was emphatic about stating her wish that Rahul be projected as she subtly argued that the party policy of not declaring the PM or the CM candidate should be junked. “Congress has not projected anyone as PM or CM candidate in the past but today we feel that people are looking for a face,” she said. 
 
The buzz raises the prospect of a “Narendra Modi vs Rahul Gandhi” clash, a faceoff that may intensify the political bloodletting given that the Gujarat strongman is going about targeting Rahul by calling him “shehzada”. 
 Sources, however, said the final call on the leadership issue was yet to be made, and the possibility of Rahul leading Congress’s charge even without being formally projected as the PM candidate. Asked about the speculation triggered by party’s plans for the AICC session, a Congress functionary cautioned against seeking a linkage between whether party formally projects Rahul and the event. “We did not call an AICC session in 2009 to declare that <keyword id="6359397" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Manmohan-Singh">Manmohan Singh</keyword> was going to be our candidate,” he said. 
 
In case the speculations are proven right, that would cap the swift elevation of Rahul who was made the official No.2 in the Congress hierarchy with the designation of “vice-president’ at the AICC session that followed the Jaipur ‘chintan shivir’ last January. 
 
Rahul, who would often come off as reluctant, has post-Jaipur taken charge of the organization. His growing outreach to media and public advocacy of policies on behalf of the party, like over the Lokpal bill on Saturday, have been taken by many to mean that he is ready to step up to the plate. 
 One of the reasons why speculation mills whirred furiously on Monday was Congress <keyword id="6369681" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="chief">chief</keyword> <keyword id="689" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi">Sonia Gandhi</keyword>’s remark that the party would take the decision on whether to go into the polls with a PM candidate at an opportune moment. It came immediately after the Congress wipeout in the four assembly polls a week ago, seen as rubbishing the estimate that the party would not risk a ‘<keyword id="1530687" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Rahul-Gandhi-Vs-Narendra-Modi">Rahul Gandhi vs Narendra Modi</keyword>’ contest. 
 
Though the tide appears to have turned against the Congress, the assembly polls holding out the strongest evidence, insiders would not mind that the young Gandhi be named for the top job. As a leader said, “when this has to happen, why not now?” 
 The view in the Congress is that putting Rahul at the <keyword id="6411847" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="head">head</keyword> of the campaign would invest the party campaign with high stakes and motivate workers. Else, it would look like the party had given up on the contest.
