7 cold destinations in India to escape the summer heat in May

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Almost 6,000 years ago, communities used a cave in Spain as a burial place. </li><li>Researchers looked at bone fragments of 12 individuals, some of which had scrape marks.</li></ul>For thousands of years, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bronze-age-cauldrons-show-evidence-what-ancient-feasts-looked-like-2023-8">prehistoric people</a> used Spain's <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1001375" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cueva de los Marmoles</a> as a burial place for their dead.Scientists examined the remains of 12 individuals and found people had modified some of the bones, possibly to use as tools and drinking vessels. Three bones seem to be modified. A cranium looks scraped clean, and two leg bone fragments, a tibia and fibula, appear polished and rounded from use. "Understanding the funerary practices of a given culture is essential, as it sheds light on a very significant part of its social and cultural structure," Rafael M Martínez Sánchez, a researcher with the University of Cordoba in Spain, told Insider via email. Martínez Sánchez and his co-authors published a paper about the modified remains in the journal <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0291152" target="_blank" rel="noopener">PLOS ONE</a>. The bones date from between about 6,000 and 3,000 years ago, from the Neolithic to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/archaeologists-upper-class-bronze-age-man-who-underwent-brain-surgery-2023-2">the Bronze Age</a>."The motivations behind practices like this are actually very hard to get at," said <a href="https://anthropology.uiowa.edu/people/katina-lillios" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Katina Lillios</a>, a professor of anthropology at the University of Iowa who wasn't involved in the study. But she believes it signifies that the living had extended relationships to their deceased. "They continued to engage with their dead, and so this tells us that the dead were important for the living," she said. <h2>A skull cup and bone tools</h2>Evidence of bone modification is fairly common for the Neolithic and Bronze Ages in Iberia and Western Europe, and there are many theories about the motivations."These range from a desire to honor the remains of close relatives or community members in ritualized actions," to collecting human trophies, Martínez Sánchez said. But he notes that the latter option is unlikely because they didn't find indications of violence on the remains. Historical accounts from at least the 5th century BCE note people drinking from human skulls. "The very globular shape of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/modern-human-skull-210000-years-old-in-greek-cave-2019-7">human skull</a> makes it unmistakable from that of other animals, as well as allowing it to be transformed into container vessels, such as cups or bowls," Martínez Sánchez said. Scraping and cutting of these bones left traces "that can only be attributed to human action," Martínez Sánchez said. In contrast, gnawing animals leave their own distinctive marks, Lillios said. The polishing of the leg bones is clear under a microscope, and their rounded appearance seems to be a result of their use as tools, Martínez Sánchez said. It's not clear what kind of purpose they served, but Lillios suggested they could have been used for basket making or weaving. The scientists believe other humans modified the bones while the remains were relatively fresh. Yet people may not have put the bodies in the cave immediately. The paper's authors note that the absence of finger and toe bones may indicate the remains were partially decomposed when they entered the cave.Though the cool, dark cave would help preserve the remains, the researchers put the modifications between a few months and a year after death. "The actions of fragmenting and manipulating the bones may well be related to specific ritual events performed inside the cave," Martínez Sánchez said.<h2>Caves were an obvious choice for burial sites</h2>"The use of natural caves as burial spaces is a universal and transcultural phenomenon, recorded among various pre-industrial human societies across the globe," Martínez Sánchez said. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/40000-year-bone-hints-humans-neanderthals-shared-cave-culture-2023-8">Caves offer protection</a> from the elements, but Lillios said they're symbolic, too. "They're often viewed as sort of passageways to another world to the ancestors, to other kinds of worlds that are seen as sacred liminal spaces, spaces that are somewhere in between the land and the living and the land of the ancestors," she said. One of the paper's most interesting findings is how communities used the cave between generations. Using radiocarbon dating for the remains, the scientists learned that people utilized the cave in three different phases between about 3,800 BCE and 1,300 BCE. Plus, in the millennia since, the cave has served other purposes, and amateur archaeologists removed stone tools and other artifacts. There's a chance they may have disturbed the human remains as well. Assuming those gaps don't represent missing or untested remains, the question is how people knew to return to the cave after so long. "I would not entirely discount the possibility that there were some oral histories, myths, or traditions in which people understood that the dead could be or should be buried in those ancestral spaces," Lillios said.

The October jobs report showed the US adding 531,000 new payrolls last month, beating the forecast for a 450,000-job gain and reflecting a strong pickup from September's growth. The unemployment rate fell to 4.6% from 4.8%, also exceeding estimates and bringing the labor market even closer to its pre-pandemic health.<h2>How Americans spend when prices are skyrocketing</h2>While the Tuesday report shows Americans largely shrugging off historic inflation, price growth still showed up in some sales data. Spending at gas stations rose 3.9% in October. The same period saw gasoline prices leap 6.1%, signaling higher prices led to a higher overall sales figure.And while case counts were down significantly from the Delta wave's September peak, the sales data points to Americans still doing much of their shopping from home. Aside from the jump in nonstore retailers' sales, spending at clothing and personal care stores both declined through the month. Sales at sports, hobby, and book stores and general merchandise businesses climbed in October, but not as much as the e-commerce sector.Spending at restaurants and bars was flat through the month, giving a mixed signal for the sector's recovery. On one hand, spending has already fully rebounded from its pandemic decline. Yet sales at such businesses haven't exceeded their pre-crisis trend like other sectors have enjoyed, and with the country mostly reopened, there's little reason for sales to jump higher in the near term.The report also hints that inflation won't cool off anytime soon. The holiday season is typically the most spending-heavy period of the year, and companies are bracing for a rebound in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/will-supply-chain-crisis-ruin-christmas-holiday-season-hiring-seasonal-2021-11">shopping at physical retailers</a>. 10 Things in Politics: Amazon union fight draws lawmaker support

It’s in the spotlight with US President Obama’s historic visit, but <keyword id="16815" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cuba">Cuba</keyword> is no less than a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/11-Best-Places-to-visit-in-March-in-India-and-around/articleshow/51455168.cms">paradise</a>. It may have not been frequented by the former Presidents, but travelers have always adored this city for its mesmerizing art, beautiful culture, great food and kickass getaways. It's now going to be the next travel hotspot after US removes sanctions in a bid to bring an end to this vestige of the Cold War. 
 
Unspoilt and undisturbed, Cuba is home to salsa dancing, rum, and wonderful beaches with stunning white sands and warm, turquoise waters. It’s the perfect place for animal lovers, thrilling for adventurers and a paradise for culture fans. So, if you plan to explore this little wonderland, Cuba won’t disappoint. It will treat you to warm weather and plenty of sunshine at any time of the year, thanks to its subtropical climate.

The average temperature doesn’t fluctuate much from the mid-20s (°C), though you’ll experience more rain in the wet season (May - October), and slightly cooler temperatures during the dry season (November to April). 
 
Also, it’s not too difficult to find your way inside Cuba, you are spoilt for choices. The state-run official taxis are your first option – they charge by distance rather than time, and a short trip will cost only a few dollars (make sure the driver has the meter running). Fees for longer trips are best negotiated up front. A fun alternative to regular taxis are the state-run Cocotaxis, which are three-seat scooters. These aren’t metered, so ask the price before setting off.

FOR THE ART LOVERS 
 
Despite a series of repressive governments the art scene has historically thrived in Cuba, where culture occupies a prominent place. One advice is take time to visit characterful Havana, a unique city that's rich in culture. The Edificio Bacardi (the Bacardi Building) in Havana is definitely worth a look. Lonely Planet describes it as "a splendid art-deco relic of pre-revolution decadence, despite years of neglect". 
One of Cuba’s main cultural attractions is its National Fine Arts Museum, basically, the Cuban Arts collection, featuring the best of the island's fine arts, from Spanish colonial times, the turn of the 19th century, the avant-garde movement from the 1920's, the abstract movement, the arts explosion at the beginning of the Revolution, including pop arts from the 1960's, the fine artists who emerged from the Revolution sponsored and financed Arts Schools in the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's up to the present. 
 
THE PARTY FREAKS 
 
Outside of Havana, there are a couple of cities for clubbing and bar hopping - Cienfuegos and Trinidad. Cienfuegos’ best-kept secret is the Palacio de Valle, a palace that contains a restaurant and a rooftop bar. The interior Arabian architecture is impressive, but the view from the top makes this an ideal place for dancing. Trinidad has all of the average spots, but if you’re looking for a unique place to salsa dance, try the Cueva Ayala. It’s located underground, in the caves that surround the Hotel Las Cuevas . It tends to get warm down there, but the open bar (free drinks with admission price) should help cool you down. 
 
THE ADVENTURE SEEKERS 
 
If you are visiting Varadero a great day trip is renting a moped and driving out to Playa Coral to do some amazing snorkeling. Mopeds can be rented for about $25 a day in Varadero and will get you there and back easily. Earlier in the morning is better because they can sometimes run out. Scuba diving is best in Cubanacan, Santiago, and Cayo Largo, where underwater reefs and multicolored fish make each dive memorable. Swimming can be done all over the island and is immensely enjoyable because of Cuba's 70 degree water temperatures. Try Playa Giron, a sparkling, sheltered cove known to most Americans as Bay of Pigs. A word of caution: only swim in salt water, not fresh water, as it is possible to acquire parasitic tropical diseases in fresh water. The Soroa hotel in Pinar del Rio offers scenic horseback tours up into the mountains, as do the hotels in the Bayamo province. If altitude isn’t for you, arrange to ride with the Varadero hotel group down into the green Yumuri Valley. 
 
THE SHOPAHOLICS 
 
Some of the best cigars in the world are from Cuba. The real ones are called Habanos, and are available at LCDH (La Casa del Habanos) stores throughout the world. lso, do not ignore the souvenire markets. There are some real bargains to be made there. You will need a bit of luck, but it may turn out to be worth the trouble. Yes, the shopping is still not what you may be used to in your country, but Cuba is catching up, and fast. 
 
THE NIGHTLIFE 
 
There are three main places in Cuba called "Casa de la Musica" where the music never stops. Two of them are located in Havana city (Miramar town and Havana Center) and the third one is located in Trinidad city, in the center of the island. Then there are many excellent jazz clubs where excellent Cuban musicians play every night. For a fraction of a price you would pay abroad, you could enjoy a concert of top singers and bands, smoothing the night with excellent Cuban cocktails and even a dinner, if you get hungry. 
 
Or, you can opt for a casino night. Casino is the Cuban name for the music and dancing craze many know as "Salsa". There are many places in La Habana, but make sure you go to 1830, a spectacular disco in the Chinese garden setting, under the open skies. During the day, the place is a high class restaurant in a beautiful old building, which is something one gets accustomed quickly in Cuba, especially in La Habana, but never gets over it. Make sure you explore the building and the garden when you visit. It is well worth the time. Plus, the food is great and very economical. 
 No visit to the <keyword id="6372936" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Caribbean">Caribbean</keyword> would be complete without the sights and sounds of a carnival, and the Santiago de Cuba (July) and Havana (August) carnivals never disappoint. 
 
The streets explode with colour, music, food and dance well into the sultry summer evenings. Moreover, you’ll get to try lots of traditional local food and drink on your holiday to Cuba, too. Sip cocktails made from world-class Cuban rum, and enjoy a hit of intense Cuban coffee. You’ll be ready to indulge in a Caribbean getaway with a difference.
