Tokyo Paralympics: India's Praveen Kumar bags silver medal in high jump T64

The ruling <keyword id="58687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> (BJP) won 3 of the 4 seats in the October 28 biennial elections to the <keyword id="74394" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Karnataka-legislative-council">Karnataka Legislative Council</keyword>, including 2 from Teachers and 1 from Graduates constituency, an official said on Tuesday. "BJP's Puttanna won the <keyword id="6355033" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="bangalore">Bangalore</keyword> Teachers seat with 7,335 votes, defeating A.P. Ranganatha of the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) with 5,107 votes and R. <keyword id="6366707" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="praveen-kumar">Praveen Kumar</keyword> of Congress with 782 votes," an Election Commission official told IANS here. Puttanna, who defected from the JD-S, has retained the seat. In Karnataka North-East Teachers constituency, BJP's Shashil Namoshi won with 9,418 votes, wresting the seat from Sharanappa Mattur of Congress who polled 6,213 votes, while Timmayya Purle of JD-S secured 3,812 votes. Namoshi had won from the seat twice earlier, while Mattur re-contested after his term ended in June but lost. In Karnataka West Graduates segment, BJP's S.V. Sankur won with 13,293 votes, defeating <keyword id="10255012" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="r-m-kuberappa">R.M. Kuberappa</keyword> of Congress with 6,111 votes and Basavaraj Terdal, an Independent, with 3,540 votes. Sankur re-contested to retain the seat after his term ended in June. Chowda Reddy of the JD-S are in the fray. Reddy has re-contested after his term ended in June. Votes of Bangalore Teachers and North East Teachers seats were counted in Bengaluru, while that of West Graduates at Dharwad in the state's northwest region and South-East Graduates at Gulbarga in the state's northern region. Voting in the biennial elections to the four seats was held to fill vacancies caused after the term of the incumbent lawmaker ended in June. The by-elections, however, could not be held in July due to the Covid-19 pandemic gripping the state since mid-March. In West Graduates, 70.11 per cent voting was recorded, followed by 75 per cent in South-East Graduates, 73.32 per cent in North-East Teachers and 66 per cent in Bangalore Teachers constituency. In all, 40 candidates from BJP, Congress, Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) and Independents were in the fray in all the four seats. BJP wins three out of four Karnataka Council seats in biennial polls

Almost all the captains in the seventh edition of the Indian Premier League have had some moments of joy, but one <keyword id="16561" type="POSITION" weightage="40" keywordseo="skipper">skipper</keyword> who has seldom been found without any jest is Mumbai Indians' Rohit Sharma. Not many expected MI to be one of the first teams to be written off after such a successful campaign last season, when they clinched their maiden title as well as the Champions League T20. More than Rohit's smile gone missing, the look on his face is more gloomy than reassuring, more burdensome than inspirational. After all, he had to bear the burden of MI being defending champions despite the fact that their icon player <keyword id="6354267" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Sachin-Tendulkar">Sachin Tendulkar</keyword> was gone and a couple key components not around. After seven losses in ten games, Mumbai's chances of making the play-offs are next to impossible barring some earth-shattering mathematical calculations. The manner in which they were found wanting in a six-wicket loss to <keyword id="6354467" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Kolkata-Knight-Riders">Kolkata Knight Riders</keyword> on Wednesday night just went on to show that their near-perfect win over Sunrisers Hyderabad was just one hit game amid many listless performances. 

	There are many factors that did not work for MI during a so far painful campaign for them. Here we pinpoint the major ones.
 

	It all started at the auction table
 One of the biggest setbacks for the defending champions was to see the players they let go off from their 2013 squad do exceedingly well this year for other franchises. The biggest examples being Dwayne Smith, <keyword id="470051" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Glenn-Maxwell">Glenn Maxwell</keyword> and Mitchell Johnson, who contributed strongly whenever being called upon to do so last year. Especially Smith, who had made it a habit of forging solid opening stands with Tendulkar, invariably creating momentum for strokeplayers like Rohit, Dinesh Karthik and Kieron Pollard to tee off at any given point of time. That opening slot turned out to be a massive weak link for the team this year as new recruit and veteran <keyword id="6377175" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Michael-Hussey">Michael Hussey</keyword> (30 runs from four games) and Ben Dunk (40 runs from three games) failed miserably with the bat. They alternated the one opening slot with Aditya Tare (106 runs from 10 games) and CM Gautam (121 runs from nine games) but neither could live up to the billing. Plus, playing at least three uncapped Indian players in all matches turned out be a big problem for MI as the options did not enthuse confidence. The reason being the retention of five players for the 2014 auction and the heavy spending on Hussey, Corey Anderson left MI with less purse to buy quality domestic players. 

	Non-performing overseas players
 After being touted as the next big thing in world cricket, fastest ODI centurion Anderson was the cynosure of all eyes when <keyword id="6354312" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="IPL">IPL</keyword> 7 began. However, 150 runs and four wickets in 10 isn't what you'd want to get from a player who was paid Rs 4.5 crore. Perhaps the big occasion, near alien conditions and huge crowds overawed Anderson but what about Hussey? The former Chennai Super Kings veteran was a real force in the two-time champion side and was expected to do much the same for his new franchise, but his poor returns put MI under tremendous pressure and invariably exposed the frailties of a susceptible middle order. 

	Big runs go missing
 

	After the loss to KKR, Rohit said: "We need to keep scoring 170-plus if we need to win consistently, we aren't doing that." His reasoning is valid. MI have crossed 170 twice so far and ended up winning those games. Their highest run-getter in the tournament, Ambati Rayudu (310 runs in 10 games) is languishing at ninth in the top run-getters. Rohit, Pollard, Rayudu and Lendl Simmons (a late recruit) have combined for seven fifties that includes one score above 70 and two over 60.
 

	After Malinga, who?
 

	The champion bowler that he is in this format, Malinga didn't disappoint with 16 wickets in 10 games. However, he lacked support from the other end. The only instance in the tournament so far when a MI bowler took three or more wickets is Malinga's 4/23 in the season opener. Harbhajan Singh's drought of wickets has not helped apply pressure in the middle overs. In comparison to 24 wickets last season, Harbhajan's eight this year leaves a big vacuum.
 Harbhajan, Johnson, Malinga and Pragyan Ojha took 84 wickets last season. In 2014, injury to <keyword id="12644" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Zaheer-Khan">Zaheer Khan</keyword> has forced MI to try Jasprit Bumrah (two wickets), <keyword id="6366707" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Praveen-Kumar">Praveen Kumar</keyword> (two wickets) and Pawan Suyal (one wicket) as his replacement. Ojha (economy 8.29) and Pollard (10.73) have been the biggest disappointments with one wicket apiece. 

	A combination of the above factors has left Rohit with more than just a creased forehead. Last year, the responsibility brought the best out of him but now the burden of leading an under-performing group is looking too heavy a yoke to bear.

New Delhi, Apr 1 () Aavishkaar Capital, the venture capital arm of Aavishkaar Group, on Wednesday said it has invested Rs 35 crore in agri-tech startup, Ergos.Aavishkaar Capital had invested in Ergos in 2015 at ideation stage, and has worked with the promoters in scaling the company, a statement said.The Series A funding round is expected to mop up Rs 100 crore with an Aavishkaar Capital partner and a technology venture capital fund also set to join the round, it added.Founded by Kishor Jha and Praveen Kumar, Ergos has been building a GrainBank model that has been piloted in Bihar. The model enables farmers to digitise their foodgrain and also provides doorstep access to end-to-end post-harvest supply chain solutions to farmers. Ravi Kishan Gorakhpur Election Result 2019: Ravi Kishan wins by more than 200,000 votes

New Delhi, Jan 9 () Assets worth over Rs 2,500 crore have been attached in connection with a money laundering and fraud case against Haryana-based SRS group, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) said on Thursday.
 "Movable and immovable assets like land, real estate projects, commercial projects, residential houses, a school, cinema hall, balances in bank accounts and fixed deposits totalling to Rs 2,510.82 crore of the SRS Group, its promoters, their family members and associate companies have been attached," the agency said in a statement.
 A provisional order for attachment of these properties has been issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
 The group and its promoters have been accused of allegedly making fraudulent promises of giving high returns to investors in the guise of investments in real estate units like shops, plots, flats and apartments among others.
 The SRS Group, as per information provided on its official website, is a diversified business house with a "strong presence" across multiple sectors that include gold and jewellery, commodities, cinemas, retail, hospitality, financial services, real estate, education and health care.
 The ED said its probe found that the promoter of the group, Anil Jindal, and founder directors Jitender Kumar Garg and Praveen Kumar Kapoor along with other accomplices "hatched a criminal conspiracy" and lured investments from several individual and institutions on fake promises of high returns in the guise of investments.
 Jindal was arrested by the Faridabad Police in 2018 as part of the probe.
 "These investments were later siphoned off into group companies through various shell companies of the group having dummy directors, who were mainly SRS Group employees," the agency said.
 "Further, they presented fake and fabricated balance sheets in order to enhance their turn-over and balance sheets," it said.
 The accused kept investors in dark by not giving investor-specific investment plans, the ED alleged.
 "To sustain their illegal investment schemes, the accused further availed loans which were used for re-payments and to develop their other projects," the statement said.
 "These schemes of investment were not prudent financial structure but only proved their (the accused) mensrea (the intention or knowledge of wrongdoing) and culpability and with no intention of re-paying the amount invested," it added.
 The ED filed a criminal case under the PMLA against the group after studying separate criminal complaints filed by Haryana (Faridabad) and Delhi Police. NES NES SNE

ED attaches over Rs 2,500-cr assets of Haryana-based SRS Group in connection with fraud case

New Delhi, Mar 5 () Regulator Sebi on Thursday slapped a total fine of Rs 10.5 crore on Nissan Copper Ltd and its senior officials in a matter related to manipulation in issuance of global depository receipts (GDR). The officials are the firm's Managing Director Ratanlal Mardia and directors Atul Mardia and Praveen Kumar Shah. Sebi conducted an investigation between May 2010 and June 2010 into the GDR issued by the firm. It noted that the company had issued 5 million GDRs worth USD 22.40 million on May 20, 2010. The investigation revealed that the entire 5 million GDRs were subscribed by only one entity, Vintage FZE, presently known as Alta Vista International FZE, on obtaining a loan from European American Investment Bank AG (EURAM Bank). The company acted as guarantor and deposited the entire GDR proceeds received from Vintage FZE with EURAM Bank as security against the loan for subscribing to the GDRs issued by the company. The company also failed to make requisite disclosures pertaining to the GDR issue. The firm made false and misleading corporate announcements and also suppressed material and price sensitive information pertaining to execution of pledge agreement by the firm in favour of Euram Bank pledging the GDR proceeds for providing security to the loan taken by Vintage. Among other disclosure lapses, it also failed to disclose that Vintage was the only subscriber of the GDR issue. The firm also failed to disclose contingent liability to the extent of Rs 1.10 crore in its financial statements for the financial year 2010-11. Sebi said the scheme of arrangement in allotting GDR issue to only one entity, Vintage, which subscribed to the issue by obtaining loan from Euram Bank and which was secured by pledging its GDR proceeds and the false and misleading corporate announcements lead to the conclusion that this was "done in a fraudulent manner with a view to influence the decision of the investors and to induce the sale or purchase of its scrip." Accordingly, Sebi levied a total fine of Rs 10.15 crore on the firm, while the officials face fines in the range of Rs 5 lakh to Rs 20 lakh each. Separately, Sebi imposed a fine of Rs 25 lakh on Camson Bio Technologies Ltd for disclosures lapses with respect to the shareholding of its promoters. "The company has deliberately concealed the material information of acquisition of shares by promoters by not categorizing them as non-promoters and thus mislead the investors on the shareholding pattern of the company filed by it, which was deceptive, untrue and misleading.
