And everyone is talking about the man who made it happen - campaign strategist Prashant Kishor In December last year, Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP president invited Prashant Kishor to shape his election campaign. The results proved that Kejriwal chose well. Who is Prashant Kishor and what shaped him as a successful election strategist is an interesting story. Kishor rose to fame after 2014 lok sabha elections when he managed Narendra Modi’s election campaign and steered it towards a historic victory. Prashant Kishor’s background Kishor, who was born in 1977, worked as a public health specialist at the UN, before he jumped into Indian political scene. He planned election strategies for both BJP and Congress. His first ever major political campaign in 2011 when he helped Narendra Modi win Gujarat assembly’s elections for the third time in 2012. Nevertheless, the mission that secured him immense popularity and led him to lead BJP’s election campaign during 2014 elections. That too was a historic win for Modi. Later, Kishor moved away from Modi and initiated a political outfit called Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC). Prashant Kishor coordinating some election campaigns so far Nitish Kumar hired Kishor to shape the party’s strategies during 2015 Bihar assembly elections when he helped him become the state chief minister for the third time. It was said Kishor decided the resource allocation, strategies and alliances of the party. That relationship soured in January 2020 and he was expelled from the Janata Dal (U) party. This was after he criticized Kumar, the party head’s stand in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act (2019). In 2017 Punjab assembly elections, Prashant Kishor helped the Congress candidate Amarinder Singh win the elections and become the CM after the party had lost two consecutive elections in the state. He was also employed by the Congress party for UP election campaign in 2017. This time he had failed but he blamed Rahul Gandhi’s failing image for it. In 2019, Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy designated Kishor’s organization as his campaign partner and his party won 151 out of 175 seats. On February 2020, the DMK chief M K Stalin declared that Prashant Kishor had been signed up as the election strategist for the party for assembly elections in 2021. Political circles say that he would now focus on the Bihar and Bengal elections next.

"Happy to share that @PrashantKishor has joined me as my Principal Advisor. Look forward to working together for the betterment of the people of Punjab!" Singh said in a tweet. Kishor had handled the <keyword id="1575" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> party's poll campaign in Punjab in the 2017 assembly elections. Currently, Kishor's company, Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), is assisting Mamata Banerjee's TMC in West Bengal elections. Kishor had also managed Narendra Modi's campaign for prime ministership in 2014 general elections. Prashant Kishor has joined as principal advisor of Punjab CM Amarinder Singh

The Yuvajana Shramika Raithu (YSR) Congress, which is led by Jagan Mohan Reddy, is also celebrating a comfortable victory in both the Legislative Assembly and <keyword id="6355187" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections in Andhra Pradesh. And it seems they have someone to thank for that. <keyword id="6388361" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prashant-Kishor">Prashant Kishor</keyword> is the man behind their electoral strategy. The engineering graduate and former UN public health official hails from Bihar. Kishor, who also advised the BJP during its successful general election campaign in 2014 as well as Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United (JDU) in 2015, spearheaded the <keyword id="337550" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="YSR-Congress">YSR Congress</keyword>’s campaign this time around. The party handily won all 25 constituencies in Andhra Pradesh and 144 out of 175 seats in the Legislative Assembly - a staggering victory by any measure. The 25 seats actually make it the third-largest single party in the Lok Sabha after the BJP and Congress. For the last two years, Jagan Mohan Reddy’s party has been working with the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), the organisation founded by Kishor. I-PAC had a coordinator in every constituency in Andhra Pradesh, providing feedback to the organisation’s leaders on a regular basis. As a result of Kishor’s efforts, YSR Congress will form the government in Andhra Pradesh for the first time, displacing the incumbent chief minister Chandrababu Naidu and his TDP (Telugu Desam Party). New Delhi, Poll strategist <keyword id="4300245" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sunil-kanugolu" source="Orion">Sunil Kanugolu</keyword> has yet again proven to be the man with the Midas touch, plotting the Congress' amazing turnaround in Telangana months after being the architect of the grand old party's return to power in Karnataka. Starting with Prashant Kishor's I-PAC, Kanugolu was largely credited for shaping the Congress' win in Karnataka and was later accorded Cabinet rank in the Siddaramaiah government. This time, Kanugolu along with PCC chief A Revanth Reddy formed a formidable pair to chalk out the Congress' strategy to pull down the K Chandrashekhar Rao-led BRS government that was eying a third term in the southern state. The Congress was headed for victory in Telangana while it was staring at crushing defeats in the Hindi heartland states of <keyword id="6355554" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="madhya-pradesh" source="Orion">Madhya Pradesh</keyword>, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. Kanugolu had also made forays in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh following a directive from the party's central leadership but regional satraps Ashok Gehlot and Kamal Nath reportedly were not on the same page as the poll strategist. Ahead of the Rajasthan elections, Kanugolu had made an assessment about the winnability of probable candidates but Gehlot reportedly did not agree to his suggestions and brought in Naresh Arora's Designboxed to construct the Congress government's narrative in the run-up to the assembly polls. Sources say that the success of Kanugolu in Karnataka and Telangana was the result of the free hand given to him and allowing his team to work freely. Kanugolu, who hails from Karnataka and is in his early 40s, has been considered largely as the brain behind the Congress' narrative in Karnataka with the 'PayCM' campaign against the BJP. In the run-up to the polls in Telangana, he highlighted the alleged corruption of the K Chandrashekhar Rao dispensation as part of Congress' campaign that seemed to have struck a chord with the people. The campaigns run by the Congress in Karnataka and Telangana have been very similar as both highlighted the alleged graft of the ruling dispensation and projected welfare guarantees that seemed to have struck an instant connection with the public. Interestingly, Kanugolu has also been involved in several BJP poll campaigns in the past. In 2018, he worked with the BJP in Karnataka and the party managed to become the single largest party with 104 seats. He had also worked on Narendra Modi's campaign in 2014, as well as the party's political campaigns in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. Kanugolu, a former consultant with McKinsey, was also associated with DMK chief MK Stalin and oversaw the party's '<keyword id="3576832" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="namakku-naame" source="Orion">Namakku Naame</keyword>' (we are for ourselves) campaign during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In 2021, he also worked with AIADMK against the DMK and led the party to win 75 seats in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections. Kanugolu had joined the Congress last year and worked closely with the Karnataka campaign. He is also credited with strategising <keyword id="5268" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="rahul-gandhi" source="Orion">Rahul Gandhi</keyword>'s cross-country 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' from Kanyakumari to Kashmir last year. Having delivered Karnataka and Telangana to the Congress, Kanugolu is likely to be given more responsibilities by the party in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls.
