In the letter, the industry body has requested the government to consider the concession requests it had made in December 2019. Considering a lot of brands are cutting back on spending on media, the industry body is expecting the radio industry, that is already grappling with decreasing ad spends, to be further impacted. And to seek a government intervention, AROI President <keyword id="1637280" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anurradha-Prasad">Anurradha Prasad</keyword> has written this letter to Union minister of information and broadcasting <keyword id="119642" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prakash-Javadekar">Prakash Javadekar</keyword> on March 16. As of now, the industry body has asked for a three-pronged bailout package. Speaking about the request <keyword id="2688166" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nisha-Narayanan">Nisha Narayanan</keyword>, Director &amp; COO, RED FM and Magic FM said, “The industry has collectively asked for a three-pronged bailout package till the economy stabilizes. This included a one-year moratorium on all licence fees and charges by the government and <keyword id="139640" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Prasar-Bharti">Prasar Bharti</keyword>, and restoration of government advertising on radio, besides clearing the long-pending payments from the Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity. We hope that the government helps restore normalcy in this sector in these desperate times.” Emphasizing on the criticality of the request from AROI to the government at this juncture, Abraham Thomas, CEO, Big FM said, "The FM Radio business was already reeling under the effects of the cut in Ad spends by advertisers including Government with most players expected to degrow by -20% this fiscal. Covid19 crises has put additional pressure on us to invest behind uninterrupted business continuity services. Ad spends on the other end has completely dried up. Radio is a fixed cost business and directly/indirectly employs close to 20,000 employees. The impact of all this is going to be huge." For the past few years, advertising on radio has seen a decrease. Even advertising from government that used to account for 10% of the industry’s revenue, has cut down on its spend on the medium. That, coupled with the Coronavirus crisis, has further hit radio ad spends. The aim of this bailout package is to bring about some relief for a lot of stations that are planning steps for cutting cost, including cutting down on staff. The primary asks of the AROI from the government, points out Thomas, are as follows: <ul><li>Increased Spending: Government which used to account for almost 15% of the Radio Business, has decreased spends by over 70% in the last year alone. Spends at this time will help rally the citizens together and keep the communication live, local and credible.</li><li>Clearing Overdue Outstanding payments: Over 6 months of Govt. outstanding payments are due and clearing the payments now will be a big relief for the industry.</li><li>Defray Costs: A waiver on License fees, Prasar Bharti rentals, reduction in GST rate and moratorium on payment of GST, on Loan &amp; interest pay-outs are some of the requests made by the AROI to the government.</li></ul>

Now, Prakash’s salary would be almost at par with that of Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar with whom the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) shares an uneasy relationship. 
 
"It would be more appropriate for the government to speak on the reasons for this notification," Prakash told Economic Times. Government sources told the financial daily that unlike his predecessors, Prakash will now get paid for attending office – Prasar Bharati chairpersons used to be paid only per meetings - and that would help him exercise more control over the organisation. 
 
As per the notification regarding Prakash, he will be paid an allowance of Rs 10,000 per day subject to the overall monthly ceiling of Rs 1 lakh per month, for those days in a month when he is required to "perform any official work or duty" in the discharge of his functions as Chairman of Prasar Bharati, including attending meetings. The order comes into effect with retrospective effect - since Prakash's appointment last 
October 29. 
 
 
This is an amendment made now to the Prasar Bharati Rules, 2000. As per earlier rules, the Chairperson of Prasar Bharati got only a meeting allowance of Rs 1,000 per meeting, subject to a maximum of Rs 5,000 per month. The Chairperson of Prasar Bharati gets no salary and no official vehicle. Now, an official vehicle has also been provided to Prakash.

The postage stamp-size of the chip was made by Saankhya Labs. The chip powers a system which can use television White Space to beam Internet to scores of households. 
 
This innovation is vital in today's India in the wake of the government's ambitious <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=%27Digital+India%27+">'Digital India'</a> programme. 
 "World over regulatory authorities are using or planning to use this spectrum for their respective connectivity programmes. India can take the lead in both technology and the markets for <keyword id="6355065" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="tv">TV</keyword> White Space-based broadband delivery. And how long can the government not push the envelope... It's got to be expedited sooner than later," said Parag Naik, CEO and co-founder of Saankhya Labs. 
 
The company was founded in 2007 by Naik, Hemant Mallapur and Vishwakumara Kayargadde. 
 
How will it work? 
 
The firm has developed a system called Meghdoot, powered by its Pruthvi chip, which can utilise the existing TV White Space bandwidth available in India to provide wireless broadband to remote areas. 
 
TV White Space refers to the unused spectrum between active TV channels that are traditionally used for over-the-air transmission using TV towers and rooftop antennas. In India, this mainly refers to the spectrum used by the likes of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Prasar+Bharti">Prasar Bharti</a>. 
 
The Meghdoot product family consists of a base station and user-side modem that can together provide Wireless Rural Broadband using the TV White Space spectrum from 400 to 800 MHz. 
 
The technology does not require line-of-sight, thus ensuring longer range, and can serve up to a radius of 10-15 km depending on antenna tower height and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=transmit+power">transmit power</a>. The range can also be further increased with more powerful and taller <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=transmit+power">antennas</a>. 
 The company will soon conduct field trials in collaboration with IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi and IIT-Hyderabad across the country. They are also in discussions with <keyword id="10387" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Microsoft">Microsoft</keyword> to do trials at Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh.

 They were born together, they studied together and today, both of them completed 65 years of their life. We are talking about <keyword id="309904" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Niranjan-Naik">Niranjan Naik</keyword>, a resident of Navrangpura and a retired engineer from <keyword id="6408304" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="doordarshan">Doordarshan</keyword>. 
 
Both Naik and Modi were born on 17th September 1950 in Vadnagar and went to the same school later on. Today, Naik took pride to say that the way Modi has built his career is impressive. 
 
"But Narendra still remembers each friend by name. I haven't met him after he became Prime Minister but I used to click his photos when he came to Ahmedabad to address rallies," he says. 
 
 While recollecting the old days, Naik said that both of them joined Navin Sarvavidyalaya – one of the two schools in Vadnagar in those days—in class 6. 
 
After being a part of RSS local shakha, they studied together till class 12th but opted for different ways afterwards. 
 
Naik also shared a couple of incidents which he cherishes even now. He says, Modi was an attentive student, a good leader and a person with determination. 
 <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> had a fascination for the uniform even as a teenager, said Naik. "Being an NCC cadet, Narendra went all the way to Mehsana to see Army troops getting down at the railway station for the 1965 war with Pakistan," he said. 
 
Not just this, but the incident in which Modi is said to have fought a crocodile, was true. "There were a lot of crocodiles in Sharmistha lake where we used to swim. We were not afraid as we believed that if we did not harm the crocodiles, they would not harm us. Narendra, whom we fondly called ND, used to play with the tiny crocodiles on the riverbank." 
 
Recalling some more incidents Naik said, “I had gone to Bhadrakali temple one day when I saw a man sitting in an auto," said Naik. "It took me some time to realize that it was Narendra with a beard and dark sunglasses." 
 Naik, while working with Aakashvani and Doordarshan met Modi after he became the <keyword id="1203295" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="chief-minister-of-Gujarat">Chief Minister of Gujarat</keyword>. And the erstwhile CM never hid the fact that two of them were friends.

In a bid to encourage voters to exercise their franchise in large numbers, ECI has enhanced its targeted interventions to reach out to every eligible voter. The Commission led by CEC Rajiv Kumar along with ECs Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, further directed CEOs of the states going to poll in the fifth, sixth and seventh phases to timely distribute voter information slips to all electors and enhance outreach activities. "Commission strongly believes that partnership and collaboration are essential pillars of the voter awareness programme. It's heartening to see that, at the Commission's request, different institutions, influencers and celebrities with significant reach are working enthusiastically on a pro-bono basis," Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said. Further, he added that a higher voter turnout would be a message from Indian voters to the world, about the strength of Indian Democracy. He urges all the voters to cast their vote in huge numbers, as voting day is not a holiday but a day of pride, by participating in the festival of democracy. According to an official release, various <keyword id="21686177" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="voter-awareness-drives" source="keywords">voter awareness drives</keyword> and campaigns have been carried out by stakeholders in collaboration with ECI. Telecom Service Providers such as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Bharti Airtel Limited, Jio Telecommunication, and Vodafone-Idea Limited are reaching out to every mobile user in the respective parliamentary constituency through push SMS/Flash SMSs, outbound dialling calls to mobile users, RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging and WhatsApp messages/alerts. These activities are carried out two/three days before the poll and even on the poll day, in regional languages, with an appeal to vote. ECI has collaborated with BCCI for voter awareness activities during the ongoing IPL season. The voter awareness messages and songs are being played at different stadiums during the cricket matches. The most innovative aspect of this campaign is the administration of voter's pledges by cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar in a pre-recorded video message, at various IPL venues. Further, voter awareness messages are integrated into cricket commentary. Cricketers from 10 IPL teams have encouraged voters to participate in the <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> elections in 2024 with their recorded voter awareness messages. A voting day alert was sent to all Facebook users pan India to inform and inform the voters about the general elections and to nudge them to participate in the festival of democracy, the release mentioned. The release further stated that WhatsApp personalised messages have begun on polling day. Google India is contributing through its iconic feature of Google Doodle on poll days and banners appearing on YouTube, Google Pat and other Google platforms. The Retail Association of India has been actively engaging with voter awareness activities, through their retail network, whereby retail chains are encouraged to celebrate the election as a festival. Voter awareness announcements have been integrated with the public address system at all railway stations. The logo stickers are used on coaches of the superfast trains. In collaboration with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, hoardings on voter awareness have been installed in about 16,000 retail outlets. In collaboration with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, airlines are making an inflight announcement with an appeal message to participate in the ensuing elections. Voter guides are being kept in aircraft seat pockets. Apart from this, many airports are providing space for the display of voter awareness messages. Selfie points have been installed at airports in 10 major cities viz. Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Patna, Chandigarh, and Pune. Cinema theatres across the country are playing ECI voter awareness films and ECI Song Main Bharat Hoon, Hum Bharat Ke Matdata Hai, at regular intervals, as a part of the Public Service Awareness (PSA) film. Sansad TV is creating short films on Unique Polling Stations set up in remote corners of the country by the election machinery after navigating difficult terrains to demonstrate the challenges in ensuring voting at the last mile. AMUL, Mother Dairy and other milk co-operatives have started branding their milk pouches with the message 'Chunav Ka Parv, Desh ka Garv' and encouraging voters through social media platforms. AMUL is also encouraging voters with its unique messaging through AMUL Girl Topical advertisements in newspapers. Prasar Bharati: Doordarshan has produced, various short films, including appeals from constitutional functionaries like President of India, Vice President of India, and Chief Justice of India, among others. Further, unique polling stations are being covered by the regional Kendra's audio-visual documentation. Music App Spotify is running a campaign called 'Play Your Part', and they have issued print advertisements, and curated the playlists for the elections, on their app. Payments app PhonePe has integrated voter awareness message into their app and is actively encouraging voters. BookMyShow has launched an integrated campaign, titled "Aaj Picture Nahi, Bigger Picture Dekho," to raise awareness among voters. MakeMyTrip is running a campaign titled 'MyVoteWalaTrip', whereby discounts are offered to citizens going to vote. Food delivery platforms such as Zomato and Swiggy are disseminating voter awareness messages through their platforms and social media activities. Grocery App Blinkit changed its logo to "Inkit" for the elections, incorporating a message encouraging people to "Go out and Vote" as a tagline. Uber India is reaching out to voters through multi-channel messaging (in-app, emails, push notifications), offering discounts for rides to polling stations, and amplifying voter awareness messages on social media platforms. Bike app Rapido has been encouraging voters with a free ride to vote. Urban Company has launched 'I Have Voted Campaign' to encourage voters. Tata Neu app, serving as the Tata Group's group-wide consumer-facing mobile app, prominently features the "Cast Your Vote" animated banner on its homepage, with additional initiatives currently underway. Indian government says lockdown won’t be extended beyond 21 days

With the Tenure of the Present Union Government led by the BJP ending on June 3, 2019, the Election Commission of India began the Lok Sabha election 2019 process six weeks back. The voter turnout on the whole in the country for these elections was 6 percent among the total number of around 900 million eligible voters registered on the electoral rolls. During 2019 elections, the Election Commission introduced VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) accompanying all the EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines). A Chennai based NGO PIL voiced its concern on the dependability of the EVMs and urged the Supreme Court for ordering the counting of all the VVPAT slips during the 2019 elections. The Supreme Court has dismissed the PIL and reinstated the April 8 judgment that directed the counting of the VVPAT slips of 5 EVMs for each assembly segment. This process is expected to make the announcement of the results a bit slower than the earlier counting.
