The <keyword id="6356172" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra-government">Maharashtra government</keyword> has allowed all COVID-19 <keyword id="54639" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaccination">vaccination</keyword> centres in the state to operate round-the-clock if they have adequate staff, to speed up the immunisation drive in the state. So far, 21.25 lakh people have been inoculated against the viral infection in the state, a health official said on Thursday. "At present, it is an in-principle nod (for operating round-the-clock). It is up to the medical facilities, depending upon the availability of staff, to decide on the number of hours to carry out the vaccination," state health departments principal secretary Dr <keyword id="468728" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pradeep-Vyas">Pradeep Vyas</keyword> said. Currently, medical staff, frontline workers as designated by the government, people above 60 years of age and those between aged between 45 and 59 with co-morbidities are eligible to get the vaccine shots. The state government wants to speed up the vaccination process to cover the eligible population, said another health official. The state is also adding more vaccination centres in the state. A number of private hospitals have also been roped in for the inoculation drive. However, health officials are facing the challenge of some people coming up with fake medical certificates to show they are eligible for taking the vaccine. "We found some people in their late 40s who came up with fake medical certificates of co-morbidities to get the vaccine. When we asked them to describe their illness, we found they were lying. It is unfortunate," a health official from the <keyword id="53938" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword> said. Maharashtra government directs vaccination centres to operate 24x7 amid rising COVID-19 cases

Presently, there are 16 cases in Pune, five in Mumbai, four in Nagpur, two in Yavatmal, and one each in Thane, Raigad, Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Kalyan, and Navi Mumbai. The state government has been taking measures to contain the virus, like cancelling public events and providing quarantine facilities. Maharashtra government cancels all public events The Maharashtra government, on March 12, ordered the cancellation of all public functions, gatherings, mass religious events and other programmes as a precautionary measure. Thackeray carried out a video-conference review meeting with the state Divisional Commissioner on the situation in their respective jurisdictions after which several directions were issued. All state or public functions will be cancelled to avoid overcrowding and to arrest the further spread of the disease which has assumed deadly proportions globally. Travel and tour operators asked to provide a list of the tourists The government directed all travel and tour operators across the state to provide a list of the tourists who have travelled abroad in the past few weeks, especially after February 15. "The source of coronavirus in the state is not local. It came from the tourists who got infected during their foreign trips," said Thackeray. Government advices for 'self-quarantine' Thackeray reiterated his suggestion to all people who have come from abroad to go into 'self-quarantine' at their respective homes for two weeks to avoid any public contact. In accordance with the centre's directives, the state ordered compulsory 'home quarantine' for all people, who arrived after February 15 from the seven worst-hit countries that include China, Iran, Italy, South Korea, France, Spain and Germany. Government issues orders to create quarantine facilities The government has ruled out any immediate requirements to screen or check all citizens for coronavirus. However, those who test positive and don't exhibit symptoms must be sent into isolation, preferably at a location away from the treatment centres or hospitals, said principal secretary of health <keyword id="468728" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pradeep-Vyas">Pradeep Vyas</keyword>. Mumbai, Apr 14 () Two committees of experts havebeen formed to analyse data and recommend measures to curb thespread of coronavirus in Maharashtra, Health Minister RajeshTope said on Tuesday.The number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra rose to2,455 after 121 more people tested positive for the disease onTuesday, a health official had said earlier. "One committee of experts will be headed by Dr AvinashSupe, former dean of Grant Government Medical College. It willstudy and analyse the data generated by the health as wellBMC's (Mumbai civic body) medical department and recommend newmeasures to curb the spread of virus," Tope said.The other panel, to be headed by former healthdirector P P Doke, will make recommendations for the rest ofthe state (excluding Mumbai), the minister added."Both the committees will hold video conferences andit would be mandatory for the concerned officials to attendthem," said Dr Pradeep Vyas, principal secretary, health. Mumbai, As Mumbai crossed the daily count of 3,000-plus Covid-19 cases on Friday for the first time since the pandemic hit the country, and <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword>'s total tally zoomed past 24 lakh, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray warned that "a lockdown is an option in future". Adding 25,681 new cases - compared with highest 25,833 new patients on Thursday, the state tally now stands at 24,22,021. Similarly, Mumbai added another 3,063 new cases and the city total jumped to 355,914, sending shockwaves among the civic health authorities. "Lockdown is an option for the future as I can see it... But I expect voluntary cooperation from all people," a grim Thackeray told media persons in Nandurbar after reviewing the ongoing vaccination programme in some remote tribal areas. Health Secretary Pradeep Vyas cautioned that if the cases continued to increase at the current rate, by April 1st week, the state's active cases could double from the present 1.77 lakh to 3 lakh. Thackeray also made it clear that those who have been vaccinated and those awaiting their turn would have to compulsorily wear masks, maintain physical distancing and ensure sanitisation. "It is now a year since we are battling the pandemic. We brought it under control, but now there's a sudden surge which is matter of concern," he said. Rattled by the fresh wave, the <keyword id="53938" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Brihanmumbai-Municipal-Corporation">BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation</keyword> (<keyword id="48434" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMC">BMC</keyword>) on Friday asked all hospitals to ensure a minimum 1,000 people are vaccinated daily to achieve 100,000-vaccinations per day in the city of around 1.75 crore. Simultaneously, the state government reiterated its orders of last week, and ordered all private offices to function at 50 percent staff strength, barring those in the manufacturing sector, while adhering to full Covid-19 protocols. The government has also ordered all cinema halls, auditoriums, drama halls, etc to operate at only 50 percent capacity and following all other norms. With 70 more deaths recorded during the day, the state death toll increased to 53,208. The state death rate was 2.20 percent, the recovery rate stood at 90.42 percent, with the number of active cases, jumping to 177,560 now, with the highest figure of patients in Pune, Mumbai and Thane, respectively. The number of people sent to home isolation shot up to 867,333 while those shunted to institutional quarantine increased to 7,848 on Friday.

Maharashtra under-reported as many as 1,300 deaths due to COVID-19

Mumbai, Apr 29 () Health workers involved in thetreatment of coronavirus patients will be givenhydroxychloroquine (HCQ) tablets as a preventive medication,the Maharashtra government has said and issued guidelines onthe use of the drug.State health secretary Pradeep Vyas in a recentcircular said the medicine will be given to doctors, nursesand medical staff involved in the treatment of COVID-19patients and suspects, as well as contacts of those testingpositive for the disease.Members of the survey squads moving in the coronaviruscontainment zones and medical workers at hospitals in areaswhereCOVID-19 cases are found will also be given themedicine.The medical workers will have to take the medicine forseven weeks while contacts of COVID-19 patients will have totake it for three weeks, the circular said, adding that thedrug should be given to medical workers with their consent.The medicine should not be given to people below theage of 15, it said.Those having heart ailments, high blood pressure anddiabetes should be given the medicine after expert medicaladvise, it added.The circular also said that hydroxychloroquine shouldnot be given to those having retinopathy (an eye ailment) orhypersensitivity.Those with blood-related ailments should be given thedrug after medical checkup, it said, adding that care shouldbe taken for any side-effects.As per the protocol, there will be no change in theprecautions and care to be taken while in institutional orhome quarantine.Medical workers will continue to wear personalprotective equipment (PPE), N-95 masks and triple layer maskswhile being on the medication, the circular added.
